I've been reading the menus from some of the places that I will be eating at and the Child's menu selections seem more to my palate, but I don't want to feel out of place if I order off of the Child's menu. Many times my girls will be ordering off of it as well.
Sometimes I can order a regular entree and share it with one of my DD's. I've read that this is acceptable, but is it really done very often?

My mother-in-law almost always orders off of the children's menu.

If it sounds good to me (and if they'll allow me  ) I would have no problem doing that! :)
We have another couple that we go out to 'dinner' with a lot, and we always only order appetizers. :D Oh, and of course the kids order from the kid's menus. :) Trust me when I say it adds up as fast as, if not faster than, ordering regular meals. ;)

Sometimes when we eat at off hours we order from the childrens menu, or share a meal or even order appys. We were in Mama Melrose around 2:30PM and were between meals so we ordered pasta from the childrens menu. I am a light eater so we just stay away from buffets (unless there are characters), and just eat at sit down rests.
