Size of a carry on bag

Can anyone tell me what the "official" size a carry on bag can be and if all the airlines sizes are the same? We have great luggage, but we have decided to just take carry ons for our Jan. vacations. If I'm investing in new bags, I just don't want to end up checking them in because they're too big.

Unfortunately the "maximum" carry on size is slightly different for different airlines. For United I think it is 14 x 9 x 22 inches. Also I am unsure of whether the handle and wheels have to be within those dimensions.

Check your airline's web site. It's the only way to know for sure. They will also have the newest information on what will and will not be allowed in carry on luggage.
