I'm taking DS11 on a last-hurrah summer trip to NYC from DC on Labor Day weekend (Sunday/Monday) . We're driving to both save money and not be captive to a train schedule (plus it's $280RT!)

I'd like to stay in the Midtown area (thinking about Eastgate Towers around 42nd/Lex) to be within walking distance of Broadway, shopping, etc. I found a rate of $169/nt with addtl $40 SUV parking (which sucks!). We plan to buy the All Loops + Water Ferry tour on Gray Line, and just sightsee for the <48 hours we have on the ground. Getting off and on a lot, of course!

Couple of questions:
1) Is there lots of readily available garage parking in the midtown area? Could I find it cheaper than the $80 I'll have to pay for 36 hours of parking at the hotel?

2) I'm an adventurous driver, but I've always used cabs in Manhattan. The thought of driving MY beloved SUV into the city, even to park it, has me about two notches below freaking out. Is it that bad, relative to say, downtown Boston or LA? Should we just stay at the Ft. Lee Hilton and take a round trip cab ride each day into Manhattan? How much would that cost?

3) Does anyone have any recommendations for an (insert chuckle here) inexpensive hotel? I prefer a smaller hotel in a neighborhood-y area, just so DS11 can see the residential side of NYC.

4) Any recommendations for things an 11 y/o boy would like to do? He wants to see the basics (Statue of Liberty, Empire State Bldg, Ground Zero, Times Square, Wall Street and the Trump Tower (LOL, love it!). I think he might enjoy mini golf at Chelsea Piers. Anything else? Esp. as it might relate to "bragging rights" kind of cool factor??

Thanks!!
