View Full Version : DISers tired of apologizing?

Not sure where to post this- b/c it really DOES have to do with the "regular" DIS posters here, the resort and restaurant forums etc.....and not all of us go to the community board (I have read, many are afraid to venture over there! :rotfl: ) With THAT said:
I have read some posts lately from people who are tired of being "attacked" for everything they say on the boards.........
Are you tired of:
apologizing? :confused3
starting your post "no flames, please" :firefight
using IMO- or IMHO- (it should be understood-of couse it is YOUR opinion- b/c you WROTE it!) :rolleyes1
AND we just KNOW when you have to insert some of these to your posts:
popcorn::
:rolleyes1
:stir:
I KNOW this is a "discussion" board- I do not need any lectures! (this pertains to my post- BUT maybe some of you had to actually start your post with this phrase also! :rotfl: )

I understand what you mean about apologizing. But, most of the time, if I think I am going to offend someone, I simply dont reply. I skip it.
The one time I did not apologize was on that thread about Disney hiring a bi-lingual princess and people started saying some REALLY ignorant stuff.
(that I should not hope to see a princess that looks like me someday because they are all White and Disney should not have to cater to certain groups of people) I believe that some people think "discussion" board, means "debate". That's not what I come here for. Nor do I think is the intent of this site. But the "debators" are out there.
Final Answer: On subjects that I DO feel I want/need to respond to, and I don't want to hurt anyone, I do apologize at the beginning - and no, I'm not tired of it, because I don't do it that often.

Firstly, Madhattr this is very important!!!!! where did you get that pic of Mr Depp, mama like, mama want , mama must have!!!! PLEASE OH PLEASE SHARE THAT WITH ME!!!!!
Ok, next thing, if I get a response inside that angers me, I practice something important restraint of tongue and pen! Go back a few dyas later and hope someone with some gently method ahs responded!
For me I don't worry about it as I am already tan and can't get burned!
This forum is like life there is all kinds some good some bad, so I stick with the winners with a winning attitude life is too important to me to give any energy to those without a good outlook.
i have way too much laundry to do......... :laundy: :jumping1: and put on a happy face.....

I dont usually apologize- b/c I dont think people really make a post intentionally thinking they are going to offend anyone when they post it (OK weel some of us dont! :lmao: )-- I think some people are just too sensitive and I see a lot of apologizing and fighting on the boards- I try not to get in the middle and yes, I do skip over a lot of it. But of course you have to check in every so often to see how nasty it got! :rotfl2:
as far as my pic- you are more than welcome to right click on it and save it for yourself! :thumbsup2 you can even add it to your siggy, I dont mind at all! :goodvibes

Unfortunately, on a internet chat board, there are always going to be people who attack others, and that you feel you have to apologize. These people are strangers, so I try not to let anything bother me with what is being said. Some people like to stir up trouble.

In my very humble opinion ;) , I have been a part of several message boards in my life and they all (unless they are private and you hand-pick the members) are chock-full of drama. lol. I have days when it drives me nutty dealing with everyone being offended and the debates and I have other days when the absurdity of it all makes me laugh. Sometimes I get caught up in the drama, but usually I bite my tongue (or glue my fingers to the desk) and don't respond....
This is just my opinion, IMHO. Sorry if it offends anyone - no flames please! NOt stirring the pot! :stir: LOL - just kidding! :)

I don't usually post on really hostile threads simply because most of them don't involve/interest me. I think some posters get wayyyy too bent out of shape about a handful of subjects that seem to keep cropping up...
This is the only discussion board I have ever done, I found it when planning my first trip.
Here is something kind of funny though...I think my very first post was about putting five people in a studio at Boardwalk Villas! It was totally innocent, and boy did I ever regret it....one of those breaking the rules subjects that I did not know anything about, being new! :bitelip:
The boards I visit most are the budget board, resort boards, and theme park board. I have learned alot on the budget board.

It's easy to read more into a post than may actually be there. I think it's because you don't know the other poster and you can't read their body language, only the words they've chosen to convey the comment. You also bring your own life experience in as you read it. People also feel much more free to say what they please in an anonymous environment, hence the more inflammatory statements and less politeness.
I used to frequent another parenting site and discussion board, but backed off because every single topic turned into a stupid debate about SAHM v. working mom and got ugly!
This site tends to be more restrained, though I have seen many posts that were not. Some people seem too eager to think the worst of one another instead of giving the benefit of the doubt, or asking what they meant. So I'm staying out of the 'train wreck' ones, and putting in my two cents on others only when I feel there's something of value to add.

I was reading a thread a while back about a pet fish that got nasty (well, not the fish- but the thread! :rotfl2: )

I can imagine... I've lurked for quite a while, and while I'm not a daily poster elswhere either, I feel much less conspicuous about posting on other boards (TGM, DW Trivia, etc). I've had the post typed out on Disboards quite a few times and then just cancelled out instead of posting rather than face the flames. :scared:
In fact, I might just hit cancel right now... Wait, wrong button... :duck:

Well, I will take responsibility for that one :wave2: (sort of)
People come to the DIS to learn about ways to make a Disney vacation special. Whether it be tips on saving for the once in a lifetime trip, finding the perfect ADR (and how to make it), how to best utilize the DDP, what kind of tickets they should buy, what the best resort for their family is, etc. Sadly, to many posts (such as the popcorn one mentioned above) are being used to incite controversy or belittle others who aren't "as in the know". The post in question was the first response to a valid question from a relatively new DISer. If the popcorn poster had read the question instead of just replying with the popcorn smilie, they could have seen that it was an easy question to answer. But no, a level of sarcasm had to be the first response. What was the point of the popcorn:: ? It did nothing but serve as indication that the thread might turn bad. It was completely pointless and unnecessary. It created controversy where there was NONE! How are responses such as those helpful :confused3 No wonder so many newbies are quickly turned off and afraid to ask any questions. It really is becoming very sad and frustrating!
I used to be frequent visitor to the CB board but I felt I needed to take a break and put things into perspective. Now I try to stick more to making my (and others) Disney vacations more magical :wizard:
Whew, sorry to be so long winded!!! Just had to get that off my chest :teeth:

Thanks. Honestly, most of the posts that I have read have been quite amicable. Even if I do get burnt a few times, the shared knowledge on this board is more than worth the scorching.
Now if we could just get a smilie that is putting on a little Solarcaine...

I've posted for over 10 years on frenz.com, which is a board for fans of Neil & Tim Finn of Crowded House/Split Enz as Chigirl and I post on a credit board under a different name and all discussion boards get HEATED from time to time, especially if your humor tends to be cuastic or sarcastic, people don't get it. I posted something on frenz.com that caused me to receive an angry PM from another poster, who misunderstood what I meant. We've been email friends for 8 years now, even though a whole day and 7,000 miles separate us!
It is true that when people do not share the same viewpoints, we can get angry. I myself made MANY PEOPLE ANGRY on another thread when I typed up a few sarcastic comments about obese people (which, as I am about 25 pounds overweight, I am close to being myself)....when at heart, I am a pretty humble, hard-working, middle class, liberal democrat from Chicago who believes in God and good manners, but also believes people should be open-minded and respectful to other people and their opinions.
That said, I NEVER APOLOGIZE for my opinions or things I post here or on other boards. That is the beauty of free speech.
I have also read so many great tips, and heart-wrenching/warm/fuzzy stories here, that I check in daily, even when people have me scratching my head as to their views. As John Mellencamp sang, "Aint that America? For you and me!" and as Neil Finn sang, "If I think it, then it must be true".
It is a shame that the spin doctors from Karl Rove to Jimmy Carvelle have made us so bitter toward one another, that we actually heckle animatronic statues at Hall of Presidents.
The more we argue, the more we forget that gas is $3.27 a gallon.... pirate:

I have seen this too- a newbie asks a question that has been argued about before, but has no idea why it is so bad to ask:guilty:
The person that posts the popcorn:: is just waiting for the stuff to hit the fan I guess b/c it has happened before! and the poor newbie does not have a clue what is about to happen!
I agree though- people should just keep their snarky comments to themselves. If a newbie has a question- obviously they are asking for help- not to be bi%t$ed at!

That's the funny/sad thing. It was a question that if actually read wouldn't result in any snarky comments.
Too many people are afraid to speak their minds IRL that when it comes to internet boards their snarkiness comes out 10 times what it would be IRL :sad2: As for me, I'm just as snarky (and helpful) in IRL as I am on the DIS :teeth:

Agreed that some of these things can be a little contrevercial (sp?) but if you read a post and don't like it, don't subscribe to it! we are all entitled to our opinions and if you don't like what someone has to say, pleasantly let them know if you must but don't get all riled up because their opinion is not the same as yours. :teeth: Helen

That ain't nothing folks .... I think around my 10th post or so I asked about parking at Contempary for breakie & then leaving car while we went to MK. Yikes! You would think I had asked if I could let my dog pull my child down main street while said child was wearing roller blades (huhm I don't think I should even ask that eh?) I was honestly wanting an answer. Got it 3 posts later BUT the dang innocent question generated a flame-throwing thread that was about 10 pages long EEK. I ended up feeling like I had recieved a colonoscopy with out any kind of sedation! Talk about apologizing! I almost thought about cancelling my addiction to this site!

The only apologizing I can't stand is when someone posts I was at the Magic Kingdom on whatever date & I am sorry to anyone who had to hear my daughter have a crying fit. I think to myself when reading it not everyone who is at the Magic Kingdom that day is a member of Disboards & you have nothing to be sorry for because you think your child was the 1st one to have a fit in WDW. Please you know how many kids I seen crying, it just comes with the territory of a Walt Disney World vacation.

I am sorta new here...and thought this was a place to discuss all things Disney.
Kinda a shock to read all teh "I hate strollers" "Parents think they are entitled to more" and other ick threads. I really am amazed that ppl find so much to argue and complain about! I have enjoyed meeting some ppl here..and admit to spending a lot of time reading and reading as I am needing something to fill the time waiting for Sept 15 to arrive, but seriously...I wanna ask some of these people..why so angry? I find the ppl with children vs ppl without children esp weird. I mean who cares if you have kids or not..but seriously complaining about things like preboarding and toddlers being taken for potty breaks when they are in line for a ride like peter pan? I have had to sit on my hands a few times as I know what I wanted to say would get th eflame throwers aimed at me! But why is it some adults are more childish than the kids..and not in the GOOD way either??+ :confused3

When I have read posts about these situations I have not read a reply saying, oh I saw your daughter crying & screeming at whatever location & at whatever time you described. Basically when I read something like this, the people who post it must think to themselves well if your at Walt Disney World then you must post on Disboards & every Walt Disney World message board site. Well the facts are out off all the millions of visitors Walt Disney World gets, not everyone posts on Disboards or other WDW message boards. Plus when people respond they say don't worry about it. So that is what I don't like when people post this type of thing because in my opinion they must think everyone who saw this reads Disboards & these must people must be so holier then thou, that they would feel guilty until they say I am sorry.

ah..I getcha now :) I was thinking it was the plain lunacy of posting apologies for a kid being a kid..which for some reason annoys people round here a plenty :confused3 Be assured if (or should I say when?) my DD4 has a meltdown at one of the parks due to overtired/overstimulated ness...I wont post an apology. I rarely apologize. I usually write what I mean and mean what I write. If someone is offended by what I say .... c'est la vie. About once every few months I really mess up. I say something without thinking it through and I hurt people's feelings unintentionally. Those few times I will make a public apology to the people I hurt and the DIS.
BTW, I have never used the :stir: or popcorn:: smilies. I find them obnoxious.

mugs, hmmm. I have NEVER used a mug at a different resort... however... we like to "resort hop". disney makes it SO EASY to do so,(they transfer your luggage) and it's a WONDERFUL thing!!! given our budget, we can't afford a whole week at a deluxe resort, but this way we get to try various deluxe resorts for a few days, and then transfer to a moderate or value resort for a few days. I think it is unfair for us to have to buy a new mug at each resort, when we are staying on disney property the whole time. being a stickler for rules, we just don't buy the mugs if we "resort hop"; we only buy them if we are staying at one resort for the whole stay. but I still say it is unfair... if I'm staying in disney, I'm staying in disney, not somewhere on I drive! If my luggage can be transferred, why not my mug? any thoughts?

tink - mugs are actually a great thing disney resorts offer (you would not find them at the swan or dolphin, since disney does not own these resorts). for about $12 you buy a big souvineer mug, with the name of the resort on it. now, for the length of your stay (at that resort) you get free refills on pop, coffee, and tea - only at the resort, not in the parks. when we drive, we bring our own beverages, but if you fly, this can save money (esp. at a value resort, where there is no coffee in the rooms). pop century has frozen coke and I think raspberry (slushy). add a little of your own rum and voila! a fancy drink!

I will have to keep that in mind then..since there is a bottle of cruzan in my suitcase as we speak :p The only mention of them I had heard untill now was the back and forth about people bringing them back withthem the next trip or what have you..and all these negative argumentitive threads are just icky. Thanks for the heads up..we are staying at the poly..and making our own rum and cokes and sitting on the balcony after DD has fallen asleep sounds good to me :cool1:

yes carolyn, this is a good thing. but whenever there are good deals there are always those who try to cheat, and ruin things for everyone else. i had friends who tried to give us their old mugs from the year before "take these, save $24" PLEEASE! I am KNOWN at the bar I work at as the "coupon queen" - always looking for a bargain - HOWEVER, I will NEVER cheat and/or steal. if enough people try to reuse the same mugs year after year to save a few bucks, disney will do the only thing they can do; eliminate the offer, and ruin it for everyone. I was just asking about if you resort hop, in ONE trip, like we tend to do. by the way, resort hopping is a GREAT way to sample the many resorts at disney . (our friends think DH and I should work for disney, as much PR we give them! tee hee) diane

I only apologized once- I had accidentally posted a thread on the wrong board. A Diser rather bluntly made a statement about it and a flurry of other disers went after him/her for it. So I just decided to kill him/her with kindness and explain that I wasn't really 'all there' when I posted it and sorry to have bothered him/her. :confused3 The apology wasn't warranted but eh I'm sure that irked him/her too.
I can only please one person a day and that day was not their day!!
But yes, I now look at the thread titles and can usually tell which ones are going to go down the drain quickly. I couldn't believe that on one of the MNSSHP threads got so nasty and had to be shut down. People were actually ARGUING over whether the 'other' people had the right to be upset over conflicting information coming from WDW regarding the parties? Craziness!
I also wandered into the CB after hearing so much about it figuring it couldn't be all THAT bad...yeah...I was wrong there!! :sad2: Unbelievable what people can get ticked off about. And it's sad when you then read threads about truly disabled people who are afraid to rent an ECV due to posts from people being VERY critical of those who do use the ECV who don't have an outwardly obvious illness. They just don't want to read about themselves when they get back! :sad2:
And we leave at the end of this month and right now I'm just sayin' I will not be apologizing for my kids meltdowns. They happen, I will deal with them, but it's Disney folks! I think even as a grown adult I too will become overwhelmed and have a mini mommy tantrum! Then they all can popcorn:: popcorn:: and :stir: :stir:

I understand what you mean about apologizing. But, most of the time, if I think I am going to offend someone, I simply dont reply. I skip it.
IMHO (LoL) we shouldn't have to skip out on posting because we are afraid of getting flamed. I don't understand how so many people can NOT UNDERSTAND that the point of a message board is to be able to talk to people across the world about something we all have in common. We should all be able to discuss MATURELY the things that gross us out, or bother us, etc...without having to deal with being insulted by someone who's view is different. I don't ever expect anyone to fully agree with me, that's why it's MY opinon and not YOUR (and I use "yours" meaning the person about to flame me because they disagree). If you honestly have nothing NICE to say to the person you are replying to, than don't reply. But if you shouldn't be afraid to voice your opinion and others should be mature enough to understand that just because someone's opinion is different, it doesn't merit you making fun of them or replying with sarcasm.

(our friends think DH and I should work for disney, as much PR we give them! tee hee) diane I got a news flash when it comes to re-using old mugs, Cast Members don't care if you do. I spoke to several of them last month when I was at WDW & they said the cost to sell the drinks is less then 5 cents, so they don't care if you bring back old mugs & they will never question you about them. I know your going to say then why do some mugs say good for length of stay? Well I don't know about that, all I am going on is what the Cast Members told me. Also these were Cast Members in managment & Cast Members who work at the Food & Fun Center, so I made sure I got opinions from each of them. Also & this is the biggest shocker for the "mug police", one Cast Member told me he uses a mug from the Wilderness Lodge at All Star Sports Resort. Now what do you all think about that?
