WHEN WE WENT ON OUR FIRST TRIP TO DISNEY, WE HAD SO MANY PEOPLE TRYING TO TELL US HOW TO WORK OUT THE CHILDREN WANTING EVERYTHING THEY SEE. :rotfl2: I DID NOT WANT THEM SPENDING THEIR MONEY ON OUR FAMILY VACATION AND A CHILD CAN HAVE WAY TO MUCH. THAT BEING SAID.....WE TOLD THE CHILDREN THEY COULD GET ONE THING A DAY. WHEN WE GO, YOU DONT HEAR, I WANT , I WANT, I WANT. THEY HAVE A GREAT TIME, WE DONT GET AGGRIVATED. :cheer2: THEY HAVE ALSO LEARNED TO WAIT TILL THE END OF THE DAY. WHAT THEY BUY, THEY ARE RESPONIBLE FOR IT. I READ ON ANOTHER THREAD ABOUT SHIPPING TAX FREE FROM THE GIFT SHOPS IF IT IS GOING OUT OF FLORIDA, SO NOW WE WILL DO ALL OF OUR SOUVINERS THAT WAY. YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE PACKING ISSUE. HAVE A GREAT TIME ON YOUR NEXT TRIP TO WDW!!!!

This is a great idea! Although I don't have any children, another great suggestion is to give kids a set amount of money. Explain to them that once their money is gone, they will not get any more. Most kids will be very selective with what they buy, knowing that once their money is gone, it's gone.

I love the shipping home feature also. When you ship an item home, you do have to pay shipping, but you don't have to pay sales tax. If you are doing a large shopping (not hard to do in places like the World of Disney), you save yourself a lot of hassle, and sometimes money (if the sales tax is more than the shipping). Great deal!

I second the only so much money, and when it's gone, it's gone. It's been working great for our family vacations for the past few trips. Occasionally, or maybe not so occasionally, I throw them some arcade money. I really love not having to listen to them complain about wanting something. (They remind us that it's cheaper at Wal-mart!)

A couple years back I took my two young granddaughters for a 3 day stay. They came with $100 each spending money and I told them if they wanted to shop everyday they had $33 a day to spend. I figured after dinner at the resort we would shop and then they would go swimming in the pool.

It worked out well until I couldn't help myself and I had to check out a store in MK and the 5 yo found a Pluto head headband that she had to have. I told her that would subtract $10 off her $33 for the day. Okay with her...and she was so cute wearing it for the rest of our stay. But, that night she whined when she couldn't buy what she wanted. She's 12 now, and still has that headband that I've never seen since for sale.

All in all, splitting the money did work out well and taught the girls some money sense.

Please try not to type in all capitals. It makes your posts very hard to read. I know you have some wonderful posts, but when you type in all capitals it makes them very, very hard to read and many people will just pass over them without reading them.

Thanks

When our kids were younger and we were planning for a WDW vacation I had an envelope for each of them. When they did any chores (above and beyond their normal chores) I would put money in the envelope for them. They each usually ended up with about $75 for their vacation.

I would let them spend it on anything they wanted. I had in the past gone through the "are you sure you want to spend your money on that?". I found that they were a little more picky when they were spending "their" money.

Hi
In the past we told them that they could get a Disney hat. That would be it. They don't need anymore toys !!!!
This year we let them earn Disney dollars for chores and such and they know once its gone its gone.

I've always done the "set amount" thing, too, but usually what I do is to tell the kids to remember or write down the things they see that they want and then we have a "shopping trip" at DTD at the end of the trip. This limits impulse spending. Ususally I buy little things here or there throughout the trip (temporary tatoos, glowsticks, ETC.) as a surprise or a reward.

I plan our daily spending money, and put it in separate envelopes. I include a set amount for the kids to spend on souviners. If they see something they'd like that is within their budget, they can get it, or wait and combine that day's money with the next day's to get something a little more expensive.

We are going for a week. I'm giving the kids each $125 for them to spend freely. Knowing my kids, they will spend a majority of their money on gifts for people back home. So I probably won't deny them something they really want. This is a special trip and I wouldn't normally do that but for this trip, they deserve it.
