View Full Version : POP Fridge Swap!!

UPDATE: I called, and ********** called, POP and we were both given the green light and were told it would be ok to have the resort hold for a couple days between guests.
Hey there folks, I mentioned this in a countdown thread but want to make a new thread for anyone who may be interested.
I can't stand the thought of spending $60 to rent a fridge that I can buy for $59.88 at Walmart. So I wanted to see if anyone was interested in pitching in on the cost of a fridge and starting a chain of DISers that we can keep passing the fridge along to, eventually passing along for free once the initial cost is paid.
We have a DISer headed down at the end of the week who is goin to order(this one (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5043379)) and have it shipped to the resort. We'll just have it left at the front desk for the next person on the list (or meet up and pass it along if someone's already checked in when one person is done using it)
FRIDGE CHANGE! For $10 more ********** upgraded us to a fridge with a mini-freezer in it for freezing those bottles of water!
UPDATE:
My original "hope" was that I could find a half dozen people that were interested, we could pay about $10 each for the fridge, and if we came up short I'd pay my $10 and cover the rest. The list has grown a lot more than I was anticipating, so if you all don't mind. . . I'll wait a few days to see how many more sign up and we can pro-rate the total so we're all paying as little as possible (just a couple more people and we can each only pay $5! and just think if we get more than a couple people!) Right now, if we were to prorate, we'd each only be paying $7.
After a couple days, I'll PM each person to make sure they still want in on this, and then let everyone know the final total for each.
Is your date already taken? Check this thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1202797) for a 2nd refrigerator!

Sounds like a great plan. Unfortunately, we are there 9/19 to 9/26; a spot already filled. :guilty: Good luck with this. :thumbsup2
I read when you mentioned this earlier and my only thought as how would you move it from room to room? :confused3

What a wonderful idea! I would be more than happy to pitch in $10 (or however much it would need to be) for our trip October 11-16. Just let me know! :thumbsup2

Our trip at Pop is from Dec 22 (in very very late) to Dec 27. Don't know if this will work because of the gap, but i would be interested in sharing if possible.
Thanks!

Maybe we can get enough people to get a couple fridges moving around . . . I'll start another "chain" to see if there are others whose dates have already been claimed if you're interested.
Oh. . . and bell services and a few dollar tip! :teeth: We'll just keep the box that it comes in and keep leaving it at the front desk for the next guest, or ask for assistance getting it moved if the next person is already at the hotel.

You can put me down for September 17th for a week if you end up starting another list. I was planning on renting one. This is a great idea.

What?? Disney charges 60.00 to rent a small fridge??? That is insane and highway robbery. I thought renting a fridge would be around 20.00 or less! Jees! :) They should supply them free in the rooms at the values as they do all the other resort levels.

Yep it's $10 a night, so for my 6 night stay it'd be $60. CRAZY! I can only guess how many thousands of dollars in profit they get from each fridge before it's finally "retired"

Hey there folks, I mentioned this in a countdown thread but want to make a new thread for anyone who may be interested.
I can't stand the thought of spending $60 to rent a fridge that I can buy for $59.88 at Walmart. So in the same vein as the decoration boxes and stroller swaps, I wanted to see if anyone was interested in pitching in on the cost of a fridge and starting a chain of DISers that we can keep passing the fridge along to.
So a tentative plan would be for me to order the fridge from Walmart.com (this one (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4990674)) and have it shipped to the resort to whoever the first DISer is on the list. . . or pick it up at Walmart if I end up being the first. Or if someone else is early enough to start the chain and has a car to get to Walmart, they can pick it up. With shipping it's about $75, without $60. So if we can get a half a dozen DISers to "commit" to the chain and who wouldn't mind pitching in $10 or so for the initial cost, we could then just keep passing it along for free til it dies.
UPDATE:
Here's a "schedule" of which dates people are interested in. It looks like we can pull this off!
Since our first DISer on the chain is arriving VERY shortly, we need to finalize things soon so that this fridge can be ordered and start the shipping process. So if anyone wants to "donate" $10 to the cost, it's about $75 with shipping. If we can get $10 per person, I'll pay my $10 and cover anything that may be left. Hopefully we can get a few more people interested and signed up (especially in those couple gaps) - it just takes 7 (and a half, LOL) of us to get this thing paid for and making the rounds!

Thanks everyone for jumping in! Seems we can really help each other out - heck that $10 a day we're all saving can buy quite a few :mickeybar :mickeybar :mickeybar
I updated the first post. I'm going to give it a couple days to allow anyone else who may be interested to add their names to the mix. I'll then figure out how much each person's "portion" is, and PM everyone to let them know and make sure they're still interested. Trying to make this as cheap as possible for everyone who wants to get involved!
Thanks again everyone! Just bare with me for a couple days while I get these details figured out and we can get the money to ********** (thanks again for starting the chain off!)

Just noticed the Fridge Change note! Now I am doubly excited! I have plantar fasciitis in both feet and desperately need frozen packs to put on my feet, this has gone from a wonderful convenience to an absolute lifesaver!!!
Not to mention the ability to take frozen ice packs to keep water cold at the parks. No wasting Snack Credits on drinks now!!!
I can not tell you how much I love the DIS, and all the people here!!!! :grouphug:

I think it sounds like a great idea as I had to rent one at Pop in May, but my question is won't PC catch on and stop this chain? After all, it seems like Disney would notice after a while and figure that they're losing money on the deal. Just wondering! Sorry to seem like a party pooper! :teeth:

I'm not interested in being part of the swap, so please forgive my post if it seems to be putting a damper on your idea. It sounds great & you guys seem to have a great thought here. I was part of the original (& replacement) stroller swap here on the DIS boards and can say that although it worked out ok for a while there are going to be people who don't follow thru with the plan.
I spent many hours on more than 1 trip trying to track down the stroller (that we weren't even using, just "babysitting") and I know that other spent way more time that I did.
If you don't have someone who lives close to WDW to take care of things in case something goes wrong, you may end up with some long distance phone calls to bell services .
Again, not trying to put a damper on things, just passing along our experiences from the past. We all really tried to make it work but, unfortunately, some people get to WDW & don't want to be bothered holding up their end of things, just my .02! Wishing you guys all the best!
Also did anyone think about asking a CM who worked/works at POP to check out this thread (Chip 'N Dale Express comes to mind) and they can tell you if, logistically, this will work from a CM perspective! :)

Karen -
I can relate....I was a stroller sitter and chased it around for an hour and a half. I think the thing the stroller had working against it is switching properties. Hopefully with this being all at POP and no big gaps (I think 3 days is the most) it will be easier. I was amazed that someone could "change plans" like that.

That's what I'm hoping - since it isn't as "mobile" as a stroller, it'll be easier to keep track of.
Thanks for your side of things though Karen. I had the same concerns. I guess I'm being an optimist and hoping everyone that signs up will keep things moving, or at least give us fair warning to make alternate plans.
I haven't had any CMs take a peek (didn't know there were POP CMs around, good to know!) I've just read so many reports of people buying supplies at one of the stores off property and leaving it for a friend or fellow DISer showing up a few days after they leave, and browsing the POP window decoration thread where DisneyMommyMichelle actually called POP directly and asked about leaving boxes and they said it was fine as long as they were clearly marked as to who is picking up and when . . . and I think they're up to 6 boxes, LOL.
It's all getting thrown together on the fly, I just have to hope that it being centralized in one location will make it easier to keep track of and holds out for at least a little while . . . I wouldn't be surprised if one day it disappears into the abyss, LOL. . . but if we can hang onto it long enough so that at LEAST those of us signing up early can take advantage of it, I'll be very happy. Passing it along to other DISers later will just be bonus.

mygoofy26...thanks for calling to check out the details! I'm planning to start a fridge swap too, since I couldn't get in on the first one, and was skipped over on the second one. I really think this will work out, especially if we try to have no gaps. If a DISer is staying at POP and can even keep it a few days (no charge since it would help us out), to fill the gaps, then that would be very helpful. :sunny:

For the OP, you could also email the person in charge of the CM board here & ask if they could make a post on their private board for a POP CM to check into this thread.
Again, just my .02!
And I agree that a centralized location might make things easier. However, I had a person that I was supposed to give the stroller to who was in the same hotel (well, she was at the Boardwalk & I was in BWV, but you get the idea) and she just made excuse after excuse why she couldn't come & get it.
Then she moved to another hotel (pop) & insisted that I come & bring it to her. In the interest of keeping the swap going I took it over there (in a cab so i could make a dinner reservation) and she wasn't even there to meet me. I had to leave it with Bell Services & then called to be sure she had picked it up.
Anyway, hope your swaps all go much more smoothly than ours did!

Ouch - here's hoping we don't run into similar problems (or that everyone finds the "bargain" worth having to put up with a couple speed bumps)
I did call POP, as did **********, and we were both told that it would be no problem. The girl I talked to was impressed with the idea, LOL. She even commented on how small the fridges were, I thought she was talking about mini-frdges in general and said, "Oh, yeah, I had one in college" and she goes, "I mean ours! They're even smaller than the ones people have in college!"
But yeah, we both got pretty much the same response from each CM we talked to - that's it's no different from anything else that's held for other guests and it wouldn't be a problem.

Carrie- Since you were the OP I have a question. We obviously need a few fridges to start off with. Several of us have duplicate or overlapping dates. Were you going to collect the money for the original fridge? Just wondering how you would be compensated from other Diser's?

********** was VERY nice and put up the up front cost to order the fridge since she's the first on our list. So I let the calendar fill up a little (I think there are only 2 holes between now and the end of the year - not counting a day or two here and there, just holes of close to a week that someone may be able to get in for their trip) and then last night I sent PMs out to everyone after doing the math, gave them all the opportunity to back out, and gave them an address to mail money directly to ********** to pay her back. So far, this seems to be working well - everyone's pretty understanding of this on the fly planning! LOL!
Feel free to PM me if you have questions or want more info.
