Almost always drove down non-stop in the past, but cannot do so this time. Leaving Baltimore at 10:00, is it reasonable to be at least at the NC/SC border by 6:00PM?? Not sure I want to stay at South of the Border--was thinking about maybe Florence SC?? Any and all help/advice gratefully appreciated.

From Baltimore you should be able to get to Florence in about 8 hours. If there is bad weather or an accident, maybe a tad more of course. It's a pretty easy drive, albeit boring (IMHO) once you get past Richmond.
Florence is a decent area to spend the night in, plenty of budget and moderate rooms. The Fairfield Inn by Marriott would be my choice, rooms are clean and comfy and free continental breakfast in the am. I've never had a bad stay at a Fairfield, they are the only budget motel I'll stay in.

I've heard South of the Border is bad ... really bad ...
I always just drive until I want to stop then find a hotel ... Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn, Jameson Inn, they're all good ...
We stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Florence, SC on our way up from WDW. We left Orlando after lunch. Fairfield was quite close to I-95, price was right and the breakfast was convenient and acceptable. My only complaint was that they put us on the first floor. Since was were so close to the highway, I didn't feel safe on ground level. They were able to accomodate our request to move. We were on the 2nd floor, but all the way down the hall. If I stayed here again, I would make a third floor request w/ my ressie. This is the only floor that has an internal hallway.

Thanks everyone for the response. Looks like I'll aim for Florence as our stopping place!!
