help! i've never had to send a letter to my DD's principal before! she's 8, in 3rd grade, makes straight A's and doesn't miss a day of school unless she's desperately ill-i'm so nervous about this! school is very important to my DD, but so is disney, lol. our vacation is september 10th-16th, and i've already talked to her teacher, who has agreed to let DD complete work in advance or afterward as long as the absences are excused. i've got the letter typed up and ready to go, should i send it to the principal now, or wait until the end of the month? any advice would be EXTREMELY helpful! TIA!! :goodvibes

My advice would be to send it as early as you can and get it off your mind. You certainly don't need to be feeling so nervous about your trip. Maybe you'll luck out and discover your Principal is a Disney person him/herself! :thumbsup2 :teacher:

Ok, I am a teacher ( 3rd graders are the best!) and I would go on a send it to the principal for him/her to review. I would also give a copy to the teacher so that she can keep it for her records. Also, most schools/districts have a form to fill out for "extra-curricular" educational activities so that you can get those days counted as excused. Check with the principal to see if that is necessary. You may even want to personally deliver the letter and explain all the educational lessons( let me know if you need some ideas) that your daughter will have during the trip. This way the principal will know that you respect the school enough to think this out and not rush to take your child out of school.
I hope this helps. IF you have anymore questions you can PM or reply back on here! GOODLUCK

thank you so much! i got the form letter off mouseforless.com and tweaked it where appropriate for our trip and i think it's pretty good, i'm just really concerned the principal won't approve it. should i ask for a meeting with her, or will the letter be sufficient? i apologize for my ignorance-this is my first experience w/ having to remove her from school for a trip (last year we were only gone 2 school days, so it wasn't a problem) and i'm kind of at a loss. i think i'll call the school in the morning and see if i need to fill out any forms, etc. thanks so much!

I will also be pulling my DS 5yrs out of Kindergarten in Dec. I used to work at the school he is attending as a special education teacher. (I'm on childcare leave with my youngest.) I intend on doing some very creative lessons while we're gone like polling people and asking them their favorite ride (with choices of course). THen, we will do a bar graph. Other math lessons will be figuring out how many people fit on a ride if there are 2 people per seat and 10 rows of seat. We will also be keeping a journal which he will help draw the pictures or write what he can. We will take many pictures and write about one or two. We will also read many stories, information about Disney world etc. In EPCOT, I plan to do a lot of science activities and keep a science journal. I'm sure his teacher will give him some work to do as well. When DS gets back, he will have a lot to show and tell (another important skill - communication).
Personally, I believe school is extremely important but so is valuable family time. Think about it, what do you remember more school or family vacations? Although they are fun, they are important social bonding moments when our kids really do learn a great deal about the world around them. These are life lessons which are hard to replicate in the classroom.
By the way, my parents pulled my brother and I out of school numerous times for family vacations. My brother and I both went on to college, received masters degrees and value learning. We just had more fun!!!!
