My family and I had the pleasure of dining at the bluezoo last Tuesday (August 8th). Given my daughter's age- she's 4- we made early reservations for 5:30pm. My wife, daughter, and I were promptly seated. The decor has this hip, aquatic feel which befits the name. There were only a couple of other patrons in the restaurant at the time we sat.
Our server was very professional and attentive. My wife and I aren't frequent drinkers, so we did not order cocktails. I will say that last year, we went to the bluezoo, and my wife ordered a virgin margarita, which was hand-made- no mix- and she loved it. I could not talk her into ordering one this year. Anyway, we ordered the hearts of romaine as an appetizer. They split the order for us. It is like a decontsructed casear salad, with a little dressing drizzled over a whole tender romaine heart. There are some tasty, cunchy croutons and an absolutely amazing 'acg emulsion' on the side. Cut the romaine, and get a bit of the emulsion. It dissolves in your mouth. I usually don't go on about salads, but this was very tasty.
My wife ordered the swordfish "paella flavor," which arrived on a cool-looking plate, which was flat on one side and curved on the other to hold the saffron rice. She loved it. As a matter of fact, I don't believe I was invited to try any! My daughter had the children's spaghetti with marinara. It was more than enough to feed any sized child. I ordered the bacon butter bucatini. My meal arrived in a gigantic bowl. The crab and shrimp meatballs were served over linguine in a very light sauce. Dispersed in the pasta was some cauliflower and broccolini. Both were perfectly tender. Never before have I enjoyed cauliflower like that! The meatballs were simply awesome, with the savory hint of bacon flavor and an excellent, buttery sauce. There was also a 'spicy tomato spill' (aka, a sauce) which I kept adding to the side to give a little kick every now and then to my meal. The meal itself was HUGE. I could not finish it. I had a nice Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with my meal.
By the time we were finishing up, the restaurant had about 7 or 8 more tables filled. During our vacation, we also dined at Coral Reef, Alfredo's, Big River Brewery, and the California Grill. Bluezoo was by far the best restaurant in which we dined on our trip, IMHO.
A couple of other smaller notes:
1. Make sure you get your parking ticket validated at the hostess stand when you leave. No sense in paying for the parking!
2. They do have crayons and pictures for kids to color while there.
