Hello all. I am new to the DIS Boards and new to the DCL. My husband and I have cruised before but neither of us have ever been in Disney style. We are taking our 2 daughters, ages 8 and 12. Any advice, tips, info, etc. is greatly appreciated. We can't wait!!

I can't wait till the cruise. Are you flying in? I noticed you are from NJ, right? I am from VA and will be driving in the day before. Do you know what time you can start boarding the ship?

Right now the plan is to fly in the morning of the cruise and rent a car to drive to the port. With the weather being what it is those plans could change up to the 20th. In the worst case, we will drive out to beat any potential storms as early as Thurs before the cruise.

We will also be joinging you! This will be our third cruise but the others were both Western Caribbean. It will be me (36), DH (42), DS (10), DS(8.5) & DS (6.5). Our boys LOVE the clubs, we have to plan ahead for them to hang with us!

Add us to the crew. My husband, DD (turning 6 on the cruise!) and myself will be joining you all. We are sooo excited. My husband and I have cruised (3x) before, but this is our first DCL. Went to WDW in 04 and 05 with our daughter and had a blast. I keep telling my husband that I think this trip is going to be our best ever! By the way, we are flying in from NY.

We are traveling on the January 20th cruise as well. It's our first Disney cruise so we're looking forward to it. Glad to see other 8 yr olds - my son is 8 and my other son will be 6.
Figure they'll probably eat some dinners with the counselors/kids' clubs. Does this mean the dinner tables are often half full? Just wondering if that's why Disney tips are a little higher - since the wait staff is being "cheated" a bit or... should we tip in full for the kids regardless of whether they eat every night with us???
Can't wait to go cruisin'
Katie1
09-22-2006, 05:43 PM
Thats a good question. I have no idea about the extra tipping. I figured we would be tipping everynight for 5 people. But if they are eating somewhere else...hmmm. We plan on eating at Palo one night also, so I know they won't be eating with us then.

Count us in, too.... Add three more, husband, myself and DD (8). First time with DCL and we are really excited. We wanted a change from the parks (as much as we love them). We are flying in from Philadelphia on the 19th and driving to the port Saturday morning. I've heard that you could board the ship as early as 11:00-11:30 am, is that true?
Katie1
09-27-2006, 09:15 PM
I have heard the same, that you can board early. We are hoping to also. Flying down on the 18th, Disney World on the 19th....my kids have never gone....and then board on the 20th hopefully by 11:30 also. We are very excited also!! Can't wait.

Hi all!! We just paid off our balance!! Whooo-hooo!! On October 22nd we can make our Palo/Spa ressies!! I just realized that there is like three threads for our cruise. Too bad we can't consolidate them. As the cruise nears, I am wondering if anyone with children close to my boy's ages would like to exchange emails. On our last two cruises, the boys really liked getting to"know" friends prior to meeting them in the clubs. Anyone intested?? My youngest will be 6 1/2 and will be in the 5-7s club. My other two are 8 & 9 and will be both in the 8-9s Lab. Anyone with boys that age that's interested, pm me.

Hi Kathy,
Oct. 22nd is the date to make ressies if you are a castaway club member. This will be our third cruise and that's one of the perks. Otherwise I think it's 75 days out.

We are from Texas, Where are you from? Our little girl is 5 but acts like she is 8. She is a piece of work. She can't wait to go. This is the kids first cruise. They have been to DisneyLan in CA and we to Japan this summer to visit their mommy, but the have never been on a crusie. My husband was slow to warm up to the idea, but he is getting excited now.

Well Happy Holly, I think that our girls will get along just famously. Our daughter is 5 going on 55...or at least that is what I tell others! Honestly, our daughter, Emily, is on the mature side...I know this since I have been teaching Kindergarten for the last 14 years and have a lot of experiences to compare to :rotfl: . Many people think she is in second grade..she is tall for her age too...
We are from NY. What is your cabin number? we are 6071...I think..don't have my reservation in front of me.
I have told Emily all about the clubs and I am thinking she will probably like them...she keeps saying that she is excited because she gets to stay up late in the clubs while on the cruise! This will be her first cruise. My husband and I have cruised 4 other times and absolutely love cruises! I am thinking the combo of loving a cruise and loving disney will make the best family vacation ever. We went to WDW 2x...when she was 3 and 4. She will actually be celebrating her 6th birthday while we are on the cruise.
Are you flying in the day of the cruise or before hand? We are leaving that saturday morning out of NY...I am hoping for cooperative weather.

Oops...forgot to mention shore excursions. I am not quite sure. Definately the beach and some snorkling...but snorkeling beach side...not on one of those trips that take you out somewhere...I am afraid if she is not happy doing it and it is a 4 hour excursion...we all won't be happy! My husband and I have done the dolphin thing (pre-child) and it was great...but the price for 3 of us is almost prohibitive! I saw on their site on one of those little mini movies people on jetski/waverunners...we (as a couple and as a family) have done that this year and I would like to do that....I think that is at cococay...and that is expensive too...but the thought of us paying for the dolphin encounter and then her saying she doesn't want to do it because she becomes anxious about it...I think I would nearly die...I know she loves waverunners. In fact I am going to see if I can get any info on them through this site. I also think that you can do them independently when you are at a beach..you know a little local company that has them by the hotels and beaches. My husband and I saw them in the Bahamas this May...we went for our 10 year anniversary. We ended up doing them through Royal Caribbean at their private island. What do you have in mind for your family as far as excursions go?
Well, I have written about 2 chapters of a book here to you. If you would like, we could exchange emails through a private message. Our travel group on this board isn't too talkative compared to others...our date is always way down on the bottom of the site. I thought maybe it was because it was so far away...but people are talking about their april 2007 cruises all the time. Oh well. We will have the ship to ourselves. :woohoo:

Sounds like our kids are around the same age. My grandson in 7 1/2 and my grand-daughtert is 5 1/2. What shore excursions are you thinking about, if any?
Did you hear that there will be a pirate night and you will want costumes for the whole family? Pick them up on sale or after Halloween. I got mine 1/2 price at Walgreens yesterday.

Saydie is 5 and sometime mature, very smart, but sometimes like to play the little sister act so her and Emily should get along well. Emily can boss her around and trust me when she has had enought she'll let Emily know. This is the first cruise for Carter and Saydie. Carter is a very nice 7 year old. He still love to dress up in costume and play with stuffed toys. He is very sweet and wll mannered, most of the time.
I think we are in 7065 [Deck 7 in the middle ] Looks like we will be right above you. We are flying in to Orlando on Saturday about 11:30. We fly out on the 27th at 4:10.

We are from Michigan and will be flying down on Thursday. Disney World on Friday and then cruise on Saturday. We will probably be tired before we get there. Can't wait though. We have 2 boys, ages 7 & 9, and a daughter age 5. They can't wait for the kids clubs. They already asked if they could stay there all day. This will be there first cruise. We decided to do a Disney because I love Disney and thought it would be fun. I have heard it is a great time. My hubby and I have only cruised one other time on RCL for 4 days and loved it. My cousin has done Disney and says it is great. We are doing the Dolphin Excursion. Our kids don't know so they will be surprised. Yes, it is a bit (alot) pricey but will be a chance in a lifetime. So we are taking the plunge too. We will be on the late one though, so won't return until 6:30... I think. And it is pirate night that night, so it will be a long day. One reason for doing the later time.
On another note, I have been trying to put the counter on my notes and can only come up with the address to show. Can anyone help?
Looking forward to it, 53 days and counting.

Hi All!
I use Yahoo Groups alot and I saw a couple of people post on here that they wish there was someway to get everyone together in one spot.
I created a Yahoo group where we can post messages (similar to this forum), but can also create a database where everyone can go in and put their names, where they are from and ages of their kids so that you can easily find people with similarities to you. You only have to enter anwers that you want to. I have made it restricted so that I have to approve everyone that joins (so we don't have lurkers).
Please let me know if this is something you are interested in!
Thanks!

This is our first Disney cruise (DH's cruise with first wife and older 2 children does NOT count! lol Disney didn't have a dedicated ship then, I don't think.)
Anyhow, DH, me, DS 14, DS 10, DD 2 will be there! We are so excited. Right now our DD is sick with some kind of ear/sinus infection, I am taking her to the doc tomorrow to get meds so she will get well. She is scared to death of Santa, I am afraid she'll be scared of Mickey and Ariel, her two favorite Disney characters.
I've heard on this sight that the early boarding is for those in the suites--not my family. :)
We homeschool, my kids are thinking woo-hoo no school! But I am going to look for something educational that I can count as a field trip. :rotfl:
See you soon!!

This is our first cruise also. We homeschool too. Thats what my kids are excited about...no school....however they did have to start school right after New Years. I thought about doing some map reading with them, since we will be there on Thursday and renting a car. If you have any great ideas for something educational, I'd be interested. We have a DD 5, DS 7, & DS 9. I also thought about journal keeping everyday.
Only 10 more days before we leave!!!

I know I have asked this before, but does anyone know about what it would cost for family of 5 to do the Trunk Bay on our own? Taxi's, Ferry's, etc. As far as I can see, the Taxi's cost $6 per person and the Ferry was about $4 (I think). It was only saving us about $20 in the long run from an excursion because of taxi's and ferry's both ways. If anyone has done Trunk Bay on there own before, I would be very interested.
Thanks...first cruise and we are counting the days!!:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Katie, It will be nice meeting another homeschool family on this cruise! We are in Alabama, where are you coming from? I agree, geography is a good subject to put on the "what I did on the cruise" lesson plan. I guess I need to find my maps and get out one of the Caribbean.
I took Luci to the doc and she does have infections in both ears. My boys never had *any* ear infections, she is just loaded with them. She is a Chinese doll, we adopted her a year ago August. So you will be able to find us quickly, we are a mostly Irish-looking family with a China doll. :) Are you on deck 8, too, since yo have as many in your group as we do? I can't remember our cabin # right now.

The plan to meet is Sunday at 1 pm a the Goofy pool. Folks are bringing bubbles to blow, so to find other Disers follow the bubbles! Lots of Dis'ers blow bubbles at the sail away party so that's another way of meeting friends from this board.
See you next week! I love saying that....except part of me wants time to slow down just a little.... :upsidedow

Do you think it is really Santa Clause 3? I haven't seen that one yet, the rest of my family has. I don't know Prestige, Deja Vu, The Wild or Step Up--
I had fun shopping today, I got a fancy blouse and palazzo pants for formal night--can't abide panty hose! DH thought it looked fine. I got the boys khakis, button down shirts and ties, but no jacket--do you think they need a blazer or something? We are definitely not dressy people in real life (i.e., off the ship). What do you think? :confused3

Susan,
The Santa Clause Movie is the third one.
I have read that formal night clothes are varied so I think that the kids will be fine without jackets. Besides boys in ties look really handsome and very grownup. I have a 3 piece set which is pants, top and light over jacket and it can be semi or formal. I am hoping to find dressy sandals in the next few days so I don't have to wear pantyhose either.
I picked up my camera needs last night and only have a few things left on my packing list to get and then I can iron and pack!
I can't wait.:dance3:

Well, we had to cancel. Our daughter was hospitalized on Wednesday for dehydration and stomach flu. We spent the last 3 days there. We are home now, friday, but unfortunately, I can't say that she is really on the road to recovery yet. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
Thank God for trip insurance. We are looking to rebook for 3/3. I hope you all enjoy your trip. I am going to check out that date on the meets board.

Michelle,
I am so sorry that your daughter got sick! I do hope that she is recovering well. That is scary, being sick enough to go to the hospital. I hope you are recovering from it, too, having to be at the hospital and dealing with a very sick child.

Thanks so much for your kind words...it was very difficult to see my daughter so sick...it was scary enough that I didn't even have time to think about us not going to be cruising this week....has to be the first time in 6 months that I didn't think about the trip. Thanks again

Hi! I was on the cruise last week and was wondering if anyone had these rooms or rooms in this area. Did they manage to get rid of the smell? Last week, the hall smelled terrible and it was in the rooms too.
Thanks!

I'm really sorry for you! I hope your daughter feels better soon. My DS had rotovirus a couple years ago and it was terrible. Best of luck to you.
