My son has asked for 2-way radios for Christmas this year. He has heard that they come with a 5 mile range now.
Does anyone know if there are websites where you buy electronics?
Thanks! :)

I have been shopping around for the 5 mile ones also. About the best price I have seen is at Bj's. I believe they were 70 each with a 30 rebate. That would make them 80 for the pair. I believe they were cobra. If you find a better deal let us know. I have not purchased mine yet.

I understand that the 5 mile radios require a licence.......
I could be wrong, but that is what I understand. They are more powerful, and I know for a fact that many Emergency Services use that kind of radio. Something you may want to look into.
I have used the FRS 1 mile radios ( the kind with 14 channels and SubChannels) with alot of sucess in Disney. I have never had a problem getting ahold of anyone, unless they were in a show where they turned it off.

Do you know how you get the license? Does each person carrying a phone need one?

I went shopping yesterday and here's what I found...
I went to Best Buy, Circuit City, Ultimate Electronic's, Sam's and Lowe's. Best Buy had the best selection and inventory but all store's were the same price. I didn't think about it until just now, but the stores are all within 1 mile of each other, maybe that's why they are the same price!
I found Motorola 5200 for $70/pair
Motorola 6220 for $60 per phone
Motorola 6300 for $80 per phone
Cobra 225-2 for $40/pair
On the 5 mile radius phones I found Cobra PR900 for $100. These phones didn't seem to have the bell's and whistles as the 2 mile phones.
Does anyone have experience with any of these phones? I'm leaning toward the 5200's and the Cobra 225's. I really don't want to spend more than $70...but would consider it if the 5 mile one's are worth the extra money.

THe 5 mile radios are called gmrs- not frs.
I believe the liscense is required for each entity that owns radios. So if your family owns a bunch than your family only needs one liscense.
I have a pair of the cobra frs/gmrs ones and '5 miles' in sales speak is equal to 2 miles in the real world. (I also have a pair of '2 mile' frs in another brnd and those work about 1 mile.) From what i read on the web that's about par for the course.
THose claims are right up there with 'this cordless phone works 10 houses away..."
Maybe in a lab somewhere, but not in the real world with any kind of regularity.
My take on it- i prefer the gmrs just because less people have them- so if nothing else when 2000 people are at disney with the radios i get a whole other set of frequencies to try to find a clear one.
