What do you guys think of this lens? I read some reviews this morning and they all seemed pretty positive.

Another question, will the magnet on the flap of my backpack do anything to my camera or cf card?

Thanks for replying. I've learned a lot fromt he experts on this board.

I have this lense and have been very pleased with the results so far. The color rendition and contrast are excellent for a consumer quality lens ans the IS is a godsend for people like me with less that rock steady hands.

I posted this in a different thread yesterday but here is a shot I took with the lens a couple of days ago.

I too am interested in a 70-300 lens for my Rebel XT.
I am unsure at this point on which one I should get.

What would be the step up or 2 from this lens?
Let's say my budget was $1200.00 usd.

Thx

this lens is very good. But I'm waiting for the IS version to re-emerge sometime in August.

Hey Kelly,

What do you mean by re-emerge?

Was it off the market? or a re-design?
I see pisco mentioned there's had IS?

I think the 75-300 (cheaper version?) does not have IS. I love my 70-300 IS!

There are quite a number of later-manufactured 70-300 IS that's ridden with bluriness when used in vertical position (portrait mode). Therefore Canon stopped the production, utilize the factury to manufacture replacement parts to fix all 70-300 IS that plagued with that problem before resuming production for 70-300 IS.

I know for a fact that as of this morning, the shipment of the new version of 70-300 IS have arrived in Canada. Pending custom clearance and distribution, I think Canadians will see the new version of 70-300 IS in the next 3 weeks.

Mickee,

When you say a "step up or 2", it depends in which direction you want to step. If you want to step up in quality, you could go for the 70-200mm f/4 L for about half your budget. If you wanted to step up in quality AND lens speed, you could go for the 70-200mm f2.8L at bout $1200 usd. If you wanted to go 3 steps up, then you can get the 70-200mm f2.8/L with IS (this is my dream lens btw) but it will run you about $1700 usd. The only problem is that all of these are 100mm shorter than the 300mm end of the 70-300.

If you still want the reach, you can go for the 300mm f/4 L IS which should be just under your budget. You get the reach, faster at 300mm (f/4 vs f/5.6), the L quality, plus the added IQ from it being a prime lens (in most cases, a prime lens will be sharper at a given focal length than a zoon at the same fl). But you have the limit of having only 300mm, no zoom.

All that being said, the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS is supposed to be a great lens for the money (and will probably be my next purchase). But if you want to "step up", you will probably have to make some decisions about what is most important to you: reach, speed, IQ, IS or $$$.

I appreciate the breakdown and education.

I want the reach.....I want the reach...
Probably go with the 70-300 when available.

Thx again.

Got email from B&H that this lens is in stock. Unfortunately for me, just coming back from vacation, my wallet is empty. I'll have to put this on my Christmas Wish List.
