New Rebel + trying to edit photo on my computer=not working! HELP!!

Got a Rebel about a month ago and have downloaded the 900 pictures :blush: onto my computer but when I try to edit the photos (just rotate them), it is saying I cannot because they are "read-only files"!

I copied one photo so I could try to figure out what the read-only does but when I copy the photo it makes the MB go from 3.55 MB to 1.25 MB.

What does "read-only" me and why when I copy the photo does the MB cut in half? Have I done something wrong with my....gulp...900 photos?
Can this be fixed?

never rotate the picture using Windows viewer, it resizes and locked the file. You'll lose the MP count and the only way to edit the picture is by going from picture to picture individually, right-click and uncheck read-only.

did you know there is an rotate function on the camera?it's on the blue page on the menu( third block over)

Always download the originals to a specific folder. Then I copy the whole batch to a working folder with windows copy and paste. There is no loss in file size this way. Then work on the copy folder.

To change the "read only"
select all the pictures, edit > select all >right click > properties > change read only option to blank box. Nothing wrong with your original file being read-only, it's good protection.

actualy in photo shop you could work on the original and if it is read-only it will not save and overwrite the original so you are forced to "save as" a new file name or different location.

Thank you for your replies...I guess I have a lot of work ahead of me, "unchecking" read-only boxes don't I?! Yikes!!

I am actually trying to use Kodak Easyshare as this is all I have other than the windows viewer which I find to be basically useless :teeth:

Yes, and I thought this is what it was doing! With each picture I took it "auto rotated" it but then when it downloaded to the computer they all went back! Does that make sense?

I download all pictures to a specific folder--first I open "My Pictures" folder then I set up a specific folder and title it "Summer 2006" just for the pictures I download....is this what you mean by "specific folder"?

did you down load the soft ware that came with your rebel? is should have a zoom browser and arcsoft ( under edit is rotate)

In zoom browser all of the pictures that needed to be rotated were already that way when downloaded and have the little blue box with the arrow on it.
It is when the computer automatically puts photos into "My Pictures" folder as I download from zoom browser that it turns them to "read-only"--these are the photos I generally edit or use to send away to be developed.
I think I'm just going to give up on this! I must need a better program to edit with and not Kodak
