We are taking our first trip home on the 23rd. A good while ago there was a post here with tips on how to clean the jets in the whirlpool tub in a 1 bedroom before you use it and now I can't find it anywhere. Can some one help and point me in the right direction. I did a search and came up with nothing. Thanks!

This would be good to know as last September I tried to enjoy a nice whirlpool bath at OKW. DH had kept my dd at the MK, but I had hauled my sleeping 36 pound 3 1/2 yr old back to OKW. My ds was sound asleep, my muscles ached from carrying him and I was alone for at least an hour and a 1/2. So the whirlpool tub sounded SOOOO good. Filled the thing up, laid back and relaxed....for about 4 minutes.....until this awful brown goo started coming out of the jets! <BLECH> I've never jumped up so fast in my life!!!! That was the end of that! Don't think I'd try it again unless the cleaning thing is simple.
Looking forward to hearing the cleaning process.

Sorry, can't help about the "ghost post", but maybe I can help with the cleaning problem. I use Kohler products and follow their maintenance guidelines best I can. Here's their advice for cleaning the whirlpool jets:

We use a SMALL (stress small here!) amount of automatic dish washer detergent with the jets running for about 2 minutes. THen drain the water and refill. This is the suggested cleaning method from the manufacurer of our at home whirlpool.

Keep in mind, the suds! The do make an anti-foam product for this and spas.

That is why the suggestion is for AUTO MATIC dishwasher detergent. It is non-sudsing.

I've never had this problem and thanks to this post, I hope I never do. I just put the cleaning instructions on my list of things to do at WDW. Thanks for the advice.
Any thoughts on what the awful brown goo was?

The brown goo is a combination of old water that gets left in the pipes and precipitates out the iron in the water, plus maybe a few dead skin cells from the last bather:D . I knew you would just love that last one!:p

How do you run the jets unless you are IN it? After that brown goo came out I tried to run the jets to see if more would come out, but the jets would not stay on. Even if I stood in the tub my weight was somehow not distributed in such a way to get them to stay on. They'd come on for a split second but automatically go off.

The water has to be at a certain level in order for the tub jets to run. If you look at the side of the tub there is what looks like a little metal disk. If the water wasn't touching that disk, it wouldn't run. I'm not sure if this is the same for all the tubs, but it seemed to be true for the one at OKW where I stayed in April.

ohiominnie....
Yours could be the grossest post since someone decided we all needed a close-up photo of a bedbug....ugh!!!! :earseek: This is definitely one thread I am going to have to hide from my DW.
Seriously, this is one topic I would have never dreamed of, and there are some great tips here. Thanks to all and keep 'em coming!
Thanks Trishy for the cleaning instructions. They sound pretty simple. I'm sure going to use them on our next trip. We've always fill the tub with hot water and ran the thing when we first checked in but never added the soap and bleach. Thanks again!

We were told to run a bleach water solution through our whirlpool anytime we hadn't used it in a while. It is easy to do and really works. Just fill the tub as if you were going to take a bath, add the bleach and let the tub run for 10 or 15 minutes to get the solution thoroughly through the pipes and all around the tub.

Maybe we should forward this info including the Kohler instructions to MS and let them know there has been an occasional problem, maybe they need to start doing this.
We've never had a problem but some people have reported it.

An excellent source on the jacuzzi can be found on Tommy Towery's DVC HHI page. It is titled "How to Jacuzzi 101".

That's the one I was thinking of when I made this post....Tommy Towery's. If anyone has a link to his "How to Jacuzzi 101" I'd appreciate it.

Here is the link for Tommy Towery's HHI Web page, specifically the Jacuzzi 101 page:

Also, dvc_bwv , please allow me to make a suggestion: Can you please edit the title of this thread from 'Question' to 'Question re: Whirlpool baths'?
It would probably bring a lot more people into the thread who otherwise didn't open it, and would also make it easier for those of us who want to find it later to do so.
Thanks!

Are we the only ones that use bubble bath in the jacuzzi?

You don't EVER want to run the motor if the water is not over the jet areas, you could burn the engine up and start a fire. My 4 yr old niece was at my house one day and wondered what the button on our tub was and pushed it. Thank goodness, even from downstairs I heard this high whining sound and ran to find out what it was and was able to turn the motor off right away. It sounds like though that the ones in DVC properties wont even stay turned on (from a previous post) when there is not enough water. so they should not be forced to do so.
The bleach idea works fine for cleaning. We live in an area with bad water, and even the best house filters can't keep up with it sometimes. If my tub goes a long time without someone using the whirlpool, then we too get this yucky brown scum, it can be downright nasty, but it really is just old water and rust from the pipes (for the most part, lol).
Here is a silly question :), are the tubs big enough for two people, and of COURSE I am talking about bathing two kids at the same time, (wink, wink).
