We just got back last night from a 5 night 6 day fully packed vacation in the world. I packed mostly from things recommended on this board and through in some extras. We had a wonderful vacation and I will post a full report later. I wanted to post this in case someone is about to go. I will also post the same info on some of the longer running threads.

Also - I am an overweight women. I wear a 1x-2x womens clothes. I have a skinny DS11 and an average weight DH.

Crocs - I wore crocs on my first night. I've worn them all day before and never had a problem. On my first night the little nubbies in the bottoms made my feet a little raw. The next day I decided that socks would take care of that. I wore the socks but my feet still felt bruised by the end of the night. Not only that, I got a big blister right under my middle toes from the socks.

Luckily I had some new balances and some inserts i brought. The next day I wore the NB without the inserts. These hurt too. After adding the inserts my feet were still a little achy by the end of the night but it was MUCH better.

A lighter person might have had less foot issues. My DS rotated his crocs and buster browns with no problems at all.

Hubby was wanting inserts by mid week. He was wearing NB too.

Diabetic Lancets - I wished I had packed a couple in my first aid kit. The big blister I got had to be popped. Unfortunatly I had to be a little creative and use something less than ideal to pop it. Once I popped the blister it was fine for the rest of the week.

Socks - I brought thin wicking no show socks thinking they would be cooler. They were too short and the back of my tennis shoes rubbed my heel. and the thin socks were just not as comfortable. I ended up buying some thick ankle lenth mickey socks. They were much better. My husband brought regular cotton socks. We both wish we had brought thick wool socks. They are cushiony but keep your feet cool too.

It was HOT all week. 90-95 + so humid that a minute after you walked out, you were drenched.

The mini mister fans worked out great. We used these alot.

Washcloth from room. The first day I wet washcloths and used them. They helped for a bit but we still warmed up quickly afterwards. I found that a dry towel actually provided better relief to pat the sweat from my face.

Golf Ball - Thanks soooo much to whoever recommended this. We were all fighting over it at night. It made the perfect foot massage.

Ben Gay Vanishing Scent Gel - This is a tip I picked up on my last trip to europe. After your shower at night rub it all over your feet. Within about 10 minutes your feet will feel very relieved. We also used it on DH shoulder.

Advil - We needed this quite a bit. Takes away the body aches you have when you wake up in the morning after a long day of walking the parks.

My cushiony house slippers with rubber bottoms - I didnt take these and wish I had them for walking around the room and resort early mornings and evenings.

Water - We loved having our Brita bottles. Hubby had his clipped to his bag, my bag had a pocket.

Carabiners - DS and DH used them for their hats during rides

Hats - I had planned to get one as soon as I got there. I did. You absolutly need to shade your face during the day. Unfortunatly the hat made me twice as hot so by day 2 we all had Sun visors which might have looked dorky, but worked perfectly and felt great!

Bottoms you don't mind sitting on the ground in - While waiting on parades or for park opening its great if you can just sit down on the concrete. Its not always easy to find an empty bench where you want to be.

If you go during the summer you will sweat everywhere. Your clothes will be damp all day and night. There's just no avoiding it and no amount of antiperspirant will keep you dry.

I wish we had all gone to walmart and bought a bunch of cheap thin wicking athletic tshirts. We could have picked a color per day and all worn one.

Chafing - We all had chafing somewhere. Its damp and things will rub. We had the monistat anti chafe gel but we found that the SOLID antiperspirant worked best. I had 3-4 mini sticks of degree solid I got at walmart. These fixed chafing in a flash. I also had some gel antiperspirant that I tried at first. This didnt work as well. The thickness of the solid was best.

Women (sorry guys if this is TMI) take panty liners. I can hande sweaty just about everything else but sweaty underwear is not something I can deal with.

Clean 1 gallon ziplock bags - Pack one in your bag when you go to the resort. On your way back after a long day stop by the ice machine and fill it up. Then dump into your ice bucket. This is how we cured the everyone wants ice but no one wants to be the one to have to walk back to the ice machine ordeal.

We also took 2.5 gallon bags to pack the camera bag in on water rides. this worked great!

Sunscreen - I used Paradise Gold 45 (Its made by Hawaiian Tropic but its a Walgreens brand) This sunscreen is light and not sticky. We reapplied every 3-4 hours. No one got burnt.

Ponchos - We used these 3-4 times - Take a ziplock to put them in when you are done. Hang them to dry as soon as you get back to the resort.

I wish I had taken a good Umbrella. The ponchos were hot. There were some times the ponchos were a must but if you just need a quick walk to the next building an umbrella would have been cooler. Plus there were many times when I needed shade and there wasnt any around. I would have loved to be able to open up my umbrella for instant shade. (There were tons of people doing this)

Despite the heat, humidity, rain, and sore feet we had the best trip ever. Thanks to everyone on this board who shared their tips with me, I hope this helps some of you that are about to brave the heat and humidity.

On the shoe subject, the main point I will stress there is take multiple pairs!! Nothing worse than being suck in a pair of shoes that starts bothering you. I'm sure the crocs will work great for many of you. And maybe tennis shoes without the inserts will be fine too, but there arent places to by comfy shoes IN disney world, so make sure you have multiple options.

I would get the inserts and not open them. If you dont need them you can return them. The ones I had were Dr Sholl's athletic gel.

Abie,
Thank you so much for the tips!!! I am definitely going to have to buy some Ben Gay before my trip. I never thought of it before. By the way, which inserts did you use? I also wear NB and I normally have gel inserts in them. Thanks again for all of the tips!

Enjoyed reading your report - thanks.

Ok, here is more TMI....did you find the panty liners hard to stick with wet undies? I have this fear that it won't stick or stop sticking and falling out of my shorts. :confused3 :rotfl2:

Anyway....I have found that the NB's with inserts to be the best for my feet. No matter what else I try, the NB's w/inserts are just heaven for my feet. Last year, I tried Crocs and they didn't work for me. I tried my teva's and they didn't work, nor did my Keen's. However, I will take them all to have the change.

I liked the idea of the carabiners...my DH and ds13 wear hats. I use a visor.

Abie,
Thanks for all the quick tips!! Will be picking up last minute items this weekend & your post just helped to cross the T's & dot the I's. Great idea for the umbrella & golf ball :thumbsup2 . I'm wondering if baby powder will work as well as antiperspirants??

Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip!

Great ideas, we used carabiners to keep my mini backback closed (clipped the zippers together), I like the idea of using them to hold hats. Ben Gay is going on my travel list, hadn't thought of that before.
Maxaroni, the lost pantyliner was too much of a visual my giggles woke the baby! :lmao:

I used the Dr Scholl's Athletic Gel inserts. For the Ben Gay, get the Vanishing Scent Gel. The scent really does vanish after about 10 minutes, and the gel isnt sticky. We passed the tube around every evening!

Two things I never go to WDW without-a small personal fan and an umbrella. Go to dollar tree and pick up the flat ones. They fit great in bags and if you loose it, well you've only lost a dollar. I hate ponchos. I'm going to be getting some golf balls and Ben Gay. I'm trying to get used to my Crocs, but I'm not sure they are going to work. They hurt the bottoms of my feet. I've been thinking about trying the NB. I've tried Nike's and Reeboks, but my feet still hurt. I've gotten to where my feet get very hot in sneakers. Any other ideas about keeping your feet cool?

I've been debating between ponchos or small umbrella. I really don't like ponchos because they feel so sweaty. I think I'll definitely pick up a couple small umbrellas before we go. Thanks for the great tips!

LOL - I did not have a problem with them not sticking. I changed them every couple of hours. I used the long kind.

Last time I went it was in Feb. I could not believe how sweaty we all were!

I suggest to try wool socks. I didn't bring any this time. I thought the wicking ones would be fine but in retrospect I think wool is cooler. You can get them at REI, Cabellas, or any other outdoor type store.

Abie,
I'm wondering if baby powder will work as well as antiperspirants??

Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip!

I wore powder the first day and honestly it didn't really make a difference. You sweat all over, its crazy.

I did power up after my shower at night. It was nice to feel dry at night.

What Style Nb Does Everyone Recommend ? Walking Or A Lite Weight Running Style? Has Anyone Tried The Micro-stretch Cotton Lined Keds ? They Slip On And Have Open Backs. They Are Alot Cooler But Have Never Worn Them In Disney. I Was Planning On Crocs Athens But Now After Board Advice Want To Find Alternative Open Shoe. Any Ideas?

LOL, one more TMI question. Wouldn't the liner cause chaffing in a very uncomfortable area? I've had that happen before and the next couple days weren't very pleasant.

Ha! I was reading through these and thinking to myself... Wow! we must really be Disney fans to put ourselves though this. I know that physically, my first trip to Disney in 2000 was hard on me. We always go in the summer as I am a teacher so I can't escape the heat and humidity. However, I get sick in extreme heat so I dealt with that THEN, I had blisters on my blisters and had to soak my feet every night. I was achy and sore a lot. However, we had a fantastic vacation and we keep going back. Now we have some pretty fabulous ideas to make it all better or at least easier which I always get right here on the DIS. Thanks to all!! Thanks for making me smile too!!

I would add that it is important to bring several pairs of shoes---even if you have a pair that you are sure won't give you blisters. One June we went and it rained (poured) everyday, so first our sneakers got wet, then our leather sandals, then we were wearing flip flops that we could towel dry.

Try to find UNSCENTED solid anti persperant. The scents sometimes cause my son to get a rash, especially in the heat. Before we go, I do most of my washings in fragrance-free and clear sensitive skin Arm & Hammer laundry detergent, because other detergents seem to give some of us a rash around the waist in hot weather.

I've seen my husband rubbing anti-persperant on the tops of his feet...not sure if this helps. My son wears two pairs of thin socks and takes one of them off about 2 hours into the day. He thinks this prevents blisters and I must say he hasn't gotten many. My daughter and I simply do a change-of-socks in the middle of the day and use an alcohol wipe on the feet while we're changing our socks. This however, means you need to bring an awfully lot of socks with you..and a ziploc to hold the dirty ones all day.

I've heard some people say they don't use "anti perspirant" at all. a little "deodorant" yes, but the anti-perspirant is not going to keep you dry in summer at disney world so why bother. Sweating is the way your body cools itself off so why try to prevent the sweating, right?

Debbie, my suggestion is that you get NB (or similar, I like NB) that have some mesh in them along the sides of the shoes. I have found that although all leather sneakers look great, they are way too hot for me even here in NH. I can't image wearing them in Florida. Currently I am using NB 505 walking shoes. These sneakers are a combination of leather & mesh so that I can get some air flow near my feet. Since I also have plantar fasciitis, I always have inserts in my sneakers.

Abbie, even though my trip is in october (3 months away), I went out today and bought the Ben Gay that you suggested and golf balls. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Oh well, I guess that I am truly addicted!

My New Balance are 574 Walking, but they are all leather. They were fine on our January trip, but I am thinking maybe not for August. I'll bring them, but I may not wear them. I have Easy Spirit walking shoes that are open in the back and have mesh around the sides - those are great!

I don't know if I am up for all the sweating! :rotfl: I just packed today and I made sure everybody has 2 complete outfits for each day. I can't stand to get wet so we are bringing ponchos and umbrellas. Of course if I am already drenched from sweating maybe I won't care if I get rained on!

Moleskin is another great item to pack. We tried it for the first time this year when hubby's feet were starting to hurt. He had instant relief. Another product we took along was bodyglide. My daughter and I wore skirts to the park one day and both ended up with a bad case of "chub rub" (you know , when your inner thighs rub together?) We honestly were walking around trying to keep are legs as far apart as we could as not to feel the pain, can't imagine what that looked like to other people :rotfl2: . So when we got back to the hotel for a break we rubbed the body glide on. Amazing what relief that made. Great product!
Also, being a larger gal myself I have a hard time finding comfortable shoes. Especially since I also need a wide width. I ordered a pair of tennis made by "Propet" from QVC. I didn't have a problem all week, best money I ever spent and they were under $40.

I'm on my feet walking all day at work and nothing cushions my feet better than New Balance crosstrainers. I would try the running shoes too if you like something a little lighter. I've tried lots of walking shoes over the years and they just don't have the cushioned sole like the crosstrainers. I've never thought my feet to be wide but after accidentally trying on wide-width sneakers, I found they're so much more comfy with room for feet to spread out. We've done 8 trips to WDW with rarely a day to rest and most days we open and close the parks. (yes, dh is psycho!) :rotfl: I guess I am too :teeth: I've never had a blister on vacation until we went on a cruise and brought dressy sandals.

One thing I noticed in so many posts is that people went out to buy new shoes, new socks, new sandals etc. for their trip. Forget the new stuff! If you must, wear them a lot for about 1 month before your trip. Save the pretty stuff for going out to dinner. Walking for miles in WDW is not the time to discover that your new sandals give you blisters, or your new no-show socks slide down off your heel. Bring your tried and true stuff and you'll feel fine. :goodvibes

You all are cracking me up :rotfl: :rotfl: !!! I live in FL and wear leather sneakers year round, with socks. I guess I've adapted after living in FL for over 3 decades. I think that the key to staying comfortable in our weather is to be prepared to be a bit sweaty, and drink lots and lots and lots of water all day. If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated and need to rehydrate so that you can perspire to keep your body cooler. It takes humans about 3 days to recover from dehydration.

Take advantage of the shade when sitting down to watch a parade, and you are staking out your spot an hour or more in advance.

Also, for those who want to be "light" packers, consider changing into "tomorrow's clothes" when you go back to the room in the afternoon and shower before going out in the evening. The evenings are a bit cooler, and I don't find that I get at all sweaty, and can easily recycle the outfit for the next day when you know you'll start sweating within a few minutes of being outside. :sunny:

I'll have to try the Bodyglide. This would sometimes happen to me and I found a solution - I wear my husband's boxer briefs when I wear a skirt for any length of time. They come down just far enough to prevent the skin to skin contact that causes the burn. I haven't had a problem since - except my husband thinks it is gross when I wear his undies. (He'll get over it! ;) )

As a 2X woman with some foot issues (size 7WW), I found that SAS sandals were awesome! I did buy Crocs and they were pretty good, although I got a "hot spot" (not quite a blister) from the strap rubbing in back of my heel. The SAS sandals are not cheap ($85), but I bought them a month before we left to allow time to break them in and wore them almost every day. They are also not "cute"...kind of ortho-looking, but, hey...it's all about the comfort! The style I bought have three straps going over the front/top of the foot, each has an adjustable buckle. They are tan/taupe nubuck leather and match everything. We went to WDW in May and I have been wearing these shoes all summer...cool and comfy!

As to the "chub-rub" issue (I love that term!!!), I find that the lightweight stretch-denim style shorts that fit closer on the thighs do not bunch and ride up like looser-leg shorts. I also used the Monistat anti-chafe cream. Those shorts I bought at Wal-Mart for around $12 per pair. Also, if you like to wear loose, flowing skirts or sundresses and don't like the thigh-rubbing, try wearing a cheap pair of bike shorts underneath instead of underwear.

Stay cool, friends!

I wore the same shoes EVERYDAY I was there a week ago and I didn't get one single blister! I wore my Crocs Flip-Flops and they are sooooo comfortable. My Crocs clogs are good but the flip-flops are GREAT. I have a flat foot and they suppot me wonderfully..not one hurtin' foot the whole week! Those and my neck "cook wraps" allowed me to enjoy the incredible Florida heat and sun!

Thanks for the other tips, BTW! You have a "panty-liner" sista here!! :rotfl2:

We are going in Sept. and my mom suffers from foot ailments. We've been shopping for shoes for her for 6 months. She tried Crocs, they didn't work for her. We finally tried the Land & Sea Athletic Shoe from Landsend.com. They are stretchable mesh on top and athletic shoe on the bottom. They are perfect for her. She tried them at the mall all day and her feet felt great. I purchased the athletic flip flop and I love them. My dad also bought the Land & Sea shoe after seeing moms. Hope this helps.

I don't understand why so many people call the water "nasty". At the counters, the water comes out of the same machine as the coke, so it's the same water. Does the coke taste "nasty", too? :confused3

I'm sure if I threw a bunch of sugar, carbinated water, fructose, and honey in my bottled water I would forget about the bad taste.

Water from the soft-drink dispensers is all filtered, but the water-fountains do not all have filters, so the taste can be very different.

Abie -

Thanks so much for the tips! I went out today and got a pack of practice golf balls (very sturdy plastic w/holes - like tiny whiffle balls!) and a tube of Ben Gay gel.

I have such bad plantar fasciitis in both my feet (even had surgery on one of them - didn't help!) and with it being so hot here near Chicago lately, I've been having fans blow on me a LOT. The fans have given me a stiff neck - in my feet!

I got back to the office with the golf balls and immediately plucked 2 out and was rolling them around the floor under my desk - it worked! It got the kinks out of my feet! Then I used the Ben Gay for good measure. My feet feel great right now - and it's been 5 hours!

I left a couple at work, there will be a couple next to my bed, the couch, and in my purse at all times! So, if anyone sees a woman at Disney kick off her Crocs and start rubbing a golf ball on the ground - come over and say hi!

Thanks for the tips and and the giggles and the out and out belly laughs. I have a pair of Airwalks ( payless brand crocs ) and 1 of them squeeks when i walk. Should i or shouldn't i wear these to WDW this september? Also, ironically they make my feet black on the bottom? Is this just cheap speaking? I was only planning on wearing them to AK so my sneaks don't get wet on Kali RIver Rapids.

Also for you skirt wearing girls with the chub rub try those slip pants. i use'm in the summer when it is too hot to wear pantyhose. Works great and get two jobs taken care of at once. Alot of them have adjustable lengths.

We used bodyglide to reduce chafing-it helped a lot-and I also used unscented antiperspirant on my thighs, which helped my shorts stay put and prevented chafing. I'm a New Balance gal, too! Soooo comfy!

I didn't think the water was too bad. A few fountains in the Magic Kingdom were a bit icky, but the ones in the other 3 parks were fine. We drank at every water fountain we passed, so 3 icky ones don't seem too bad!

That is what we do. We stick all kinds of powdered stuff in to kill the taste. I only buy the sugar free stuff but, it helps. We leave tomorrow so, I just asked DH for a golf ball. He thinks I am crazy!!! I have to go to Walmart today for other things before we leave so, I will get some Ben Gay Vanishing Scent Gel. I may get some gel inserts, too. Anyone tried them with kids? My DD's have big feet....womens 6 and womens 9. :rotfl: Enjoyed lol on this post, thanks everyone. Oh, I do use the deo for my legs inside to avoid chaffing. It has worked. I learned it here from a fellow posted who told me what kind even worked best. She was right!!!!
Thanks.

Body Glide is a product that looks like deodorant. I'm reading off the label:
"Anti-Friction Skin Formula"
Helps Prevent Blisters and Chafing
No Mess, Non-Greasy-Non-oily

You can probably just Google it if your interested in buying it. It says it is also good for dry skin, saddle sores, cracked skin, rash

You can use Bodyglide wherever you would experience chafing or rubbing. On feet, thighs, under arms, wherever.
