I loved the first one, and LOVE LOVE LOVE JOHNNY DEPP, but ack....
What was up with the way it ended? I couldnt get into Davy Jones (i kept thinking monkey everytime i heard the name) and they did not utilize Depp in a good way nor Orlando much at all. Depp just looked so silly all the time, running like a girl and acting all freaked out all the time. He was oh so much cooler in the first film (and more sexy).
That being said....i love the idea of Pirates and I adore Johnny Depp (wasnt a big Orlando fan until this movie...ummm he's "maturing" hehe)..its not like i wont buy it on dvd and rewatch it, but I'll not pay to see it again at the theater (i saw Pirates of the Carribean 4 times)
I hope its like back to the future trilogy, remember the second one ended the same way and it sucked but the third one was really good...sigh, lets hope so!

Re: Johnny Depp/Cpt. Jack - I thought he was just as swishy in the first movie as he was in this one.
As far as the movie itself: Yes, it was an obvious set-up for the next film but then we all knew we'd be seeing all three anyway so I expect they thought we wouldn't mind. At least we don't have to wait three years like between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi...

I thought the middle stretched a bit, but our whole family had a great time.

Enjoyed the red carpet at Disneyland and got to ride the updated ride the night before it reopened, so we had to see the movie. (Would have anyway of course.)
Enjoyed the movie. I thought it would be a set up for movie three and that's just what it was. It will be better when they are all out on DVD and you can watch three right after two.

Our family loved the movie. A little long maybe, and we could have done without the whole cannibal thing, but those are small complaints. We had a gas seeing it, and OUR reaction to the ending was very positive! Bring it on!

I think they guarenteed even bigger ticket sales by killing off a certain someone.

I thought the kiss between Capt. Jack and Elizabeth was HOT, HOT, HOT!!! Capt. Jack was just as sexy in #2 as #1, IMO.
Can hardly wait to see #3- I want to see how Capt. Jack defeats the "Beastie".

I couldn't believe how fast 2.5 hrs went by! We loved it! Although it was different from the original, it was a GREAT movie!!!! The make-up and costuming was excellent, as well as the script. Can't wait until May 25, 2007 for P3!!!!!!!!!!

Well, let's hope its that ghastly Davy Jones character. :sad2: I just couldn't get into him at all. I thought Johnny needed a little more starch in his shorts myself and I'm a huge JD fan. He didn't seem to have any cajones at all until that kiss~~WOW! But even there I was scratching my head--I mean, Elizabeth had just been rolling her eyes at him and wrinkling her nose at his bad breath. So it's not quite believable that she would kiss him so passionately.
Let's hope POTC3 clears it all up and blows us out of our seats. popcorn::

I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel this way! I thought the kiss was so hot and I'm so jealous! I was never a Johnny Depp fan before, but I am now. I also agree that Will looked pretty hot as well. So much better than his LOTR days. I'm torn between who I like better. I've decided, I want to be a pirate!
Maybe I shouldn't tell my DH... ;) ;) pirate:

To the OP-I couldn't agree more! I also loved the first Pirates, but what happened to Jack Sparrow's spine?? Too much caricature of the first Jack. And, am I the only one who doesn't like what they're doing with Elizabeth's character? I loved her in the first movie and really didn't like her at all in this one. But, like the other poster said, usually movie #2 in a series of 3 is the stinker (remember Indiana Jones and the Temple of Toom? Yuck!)

I was disappointed in PiratesII, it was an OK movie but that's about it...
No character development - the only new thing we learned about these characters is with Will relationship to his father. There was not much introduction to the characters. It felt like we were tossed into the middle of a movie, which some would argue we were since we had already seen part I. I would rather not have to watch the first one to enjoy the second.
Too much violence - It is an action movie but the violence just didn't seem to end. I thought they could have shortened some of those seens.
Very similar story to Pirates I - I found the plot to very similar to Pirates I. Couldn't they have thought of something different?
I have also been disappointed with Disney's marketing of this movie. They have been directly marketing this to young children but yet it is a violent PG-13 movie.

I think we're the only two that agree on these points. I left disappointed in #2, to me they tried too hard to top the first one and just made a mess of it. I too felt it was too dark/violence to target kids.
I went to see Superman the weeknd and though it was better than Pirates 2. Superman is so handsome I couldn't catch the storyline.

Absolutely loved the first one.
The second on relied to much on effects and seemed to be overly gross. Some of the films characters were very difficult to understand. I missed a lot of dialog because of the accents.
The story line seemed to be a second thought

I can't believe this negativity toward what I think is a FANTASTIC movie.
The movie most certainly did develop the characters and much more accurately than most would, IMO. It wasn't nice and moral and convenient but look who we're dealing with...Pirates.
It was a great movie, IMO. Captain Jack was more self assured and colorful but that is who he is, I was not surprised. Elizabeth really took off with the struggles of love, right and wrong, life and death. Loved her. Will was muted I'd say but Norrington was also great. I truly look forward to the return of Barbossa in 3.
The movie wasn't too long but pushed the limits, was a bit more graphic than the first (but not over the top) and the ending, while surprising PERFECTLY sets up # 3.
Do we want to start taking bets on how huge that opening will be???

Peter, I agree that pirates 3 will open hugely, as a main result in the first movie and the characters(actors). It almost doesnt matter that the movie wasnt that "good", its as if they had some sort of immunity, knowing no matter what they did it would be a hit.
Someone posted that it seemed so much like the first. Omgagosh i didnt realize that until now. But your right.
Yup, the second indiana jones bit. The second back to the future bit. Compared to those two, Pirates 2 is better, but on a little, i'm really hoping (and yup i saw it on opening day, and will see 3 on opening day too) that the next is just as much enjoyable as Indy 3 and BTF 3. Both which i loved.
Will i still buy this on DVD...you betcha...i love J. Depp....hehehehe The film makers just need to embelish the story line "deeper"...and with a bit less special effects and more human emotion.

I have to agree. The 2nd one goes just a little too overboard (no pun intended :teeth: ) on the special affects. More human emotion would have been s-o-o-o much better! :goodvibes
Did anyone else have a problem understanding Johnny Depp's dialog?? I'm going back to see Pirates 2 just so I can figure out what Captain Jack Sparrow is saying!

It's great this movie played so differently to so many different people. Personally, I found the second movie MUCH better in terms of exploring the characters and with much more human emotion than the first one. But that's just me.

I won passes for this and saw it Saturday. We really enjoyed it! Didn't seem drawn out at all, as some have said.
The questions about why she kissed Jack...wasn't it simply so she could chain him to the mast?

That's what I told DH. We will sit down and watch all three at once. :)
My mom saw #2 and didn't understand it because she hadn't seen #1. :confused3
We will just have to invite her next year for the marathon!

I thought it was good but not great. First of all, it was not as funny as the first one. I thought the humor of the first movie was one of its most important and charming features. The humor was lacking and at times forced (like the fruit throwing scene). And it was obviously the first half of longer 5 hour movie buts that OK.
Having said that, the characters I thought were interesting especially Sparrow, Swan, and Norrington (Turner's character like the actor is boring). The action and effects were also top notch.
I loved the return of Barbossa.

My grandsons loved 1 and their one most important thing to do this summer was to see 2. I hadn't seen 1 and was somewhat confused at points with the storyline. Even so, I thought it was a hoot! I was never a Johnny Depp fan, but I thought his character was terrific! And he's sexy as all get-out...this coming from a 60 year-old grandma! I went out and bought 1 that day just to get the background straight. I have to say the first was better with special effects and story line, but 2 was just plain fun! I think 3 will round out the whole Pirates saga. I can't wait to take the grandsons in May!

He was already dead (Ghost). The monkey stole the coin at the end of Pirates 1 so that any of the Pirates could return in the future (Pirates 3). pirate: :sail:

I have a different theory. All the pirates were under the curse in #1- when the last gold piece and Will's blood were laid in the chest, all the pirates (Barbosa included) became regular mortals again- they were alive. Barbosa got shot and died right after becoming mortal again. The rest of the pirates got carted off to jail (some of them are in #2 after being rescued by Will and/or Jack- can't remember right now). Barbosa comes down the stairs at the end of #2 because the Voodoo witch brought him back from the dead. That is my take on the situation. The monkey is still undead because he stole a coin from the cursed chest at the end of #1- everyone else was free of the curse, but the monkey put himself under a new one, because he took the coin from the intact treasure.

HURRY UP DISNEY WE WANT THE MOVIE!!!!!
Uh, Barbossa is alive, because the frickin Voodoo Witch brought him back to life. It's this thing that Voodoo Witchs do. I mean, what the heck, they're going to get Jack who is now Dead.
As to what the Witch specifically did to make Barbossa alive, why not hold the question till movie 3, since they'll explain it then?

I wonder when ABC airs Pirates 1 this Sunday if they show the whole credit part. Usually TV stations just whipped thru the credits in a few moments. pirate:

But there's a difference between "those that made the movie" and the third assistant accounting clerk for the second unit's electrical department's catering company. Credits these days are nothing but printouts of company phone directories.

Depp's performance, a reprise of his amusing tricks from the first film, was the only reason to see this. There was no earthly reason for a pirate movie to be over two hours long. In the 1930's this would have been a 70 minute diversion.
