If you were to travel somewhere to celebrate Christmas, where would you want to go too?

AlexWyattMommy

Well, Disney would have been my first choice. BUT everyone goes there and I hear the crowds are horrible. NOT how I want to spend Christmas.

So I'll pick a cabin in Gatlinburg for our holiday.

We wouldn't be anywhere else but home for the holidays. My highlight of the holidays is spending time with family and friends.

We did travel to Disney about 4 years ago over the holidays and it just didn't feel like Christmas. Since than we decided that home is where we want to be for the holidays.

I do like to be home for Christmas but I have been in Chicago for it and am going there again this year for Christmas. I think anywhere would be fine as long as family is there. Branson or Gatlinburg might be fun to do that time of year. Maybe someplace that actually has snow (lots of it) would be fun to go once just to experience it.

*Ice cream- coke float

I can't pick a favorite flower/plant. It changes everytime my garden blooms.

I had a pair of crocs, once, they are still around somewhere, but they don't feel good on my feet. The size smaller rubbed my toe and the size bigger fell off. :rotfl2: So I have these blue shoes that are gathering dust.

Kirby

I own a mickey red pair of crocs. I only use them to go out in the yard or in the basement for a short trip. They are not good shoes and IMHO overpriced for a molded piece of rubbery plastic. My legs start to hurt if I wear them too long. I prefer to got bare foot.

Thai - I've only eaten once at a Thai restaurant and found the food, for the most part, too spicy for me. Of course, it may have been what was selected. We all picked something different and shared.

Japanese - I'm not sure that I've ever eaten at a restaurant that serves Japanese food.

You could get your food mild, and let the waitrees know that you are not able to handle any spicy foods so for them to recommend things to you. Usually things like pad thai, chicken satay, are safe.

My favorite thai food is pad thai-spicy, but it does depend on how it is prepared.

My favorite Japanese foods are shrimp tempura, and sushi...but I have alot of Japanese foods, as well as Thai foods that I like.

What was your most scariest experience that has happened to you?

The one that leaps to mind is when my son was missing. We were at DH's aunt's new home - right across from a lake. My son was about 6. He just disappeared. We were frantic. We looked for about 5 mins then I went into one of the bedrooms to call the police. I was actually on the phone with the dispatcher when I found him. He was hiding behind the door all curled up. Turns out he thought he was in trouble. Scared the life out of me. I get teary now just thinking of it. It brings back so much emotion.

Tie for second would be when my nephew with leukemia went into a coma (he was 9) and watching my dad have a heart attack. Both are doing fine now by the way.

Look into your pantry, what could you make your family for dinner, and don't forget dessert. http://bestsmileys.com/eating1/13.gif

Wow...my family could make a whole bunch of things. I keep canned meats and vegetables on hand at all times. Plus there is always meat in the freezer. I live about 30mins from the nearest grocery store and I don't have a vehicle during the day (DH uses it for work). So when I get to go out food shopping I really go food shopping. :rotfl:

Plus the power around here tends to go out often. We have lots of trees and old lines, and then there's our local neighborhood pole taker outer! (He's about 19 and has taken out 3 poles in the past year. Always one vehicle accidents and somehow there is always a deer involved - why the boy still has his license is beyond me!!:scared1: )

Here's an example:
Chicken, white rice, any veggie of choice and brownies from a box mix. The chicken and white rice could be seasoned with any number of seasonings I have in my pantry.

As a good Italian I always have pasta and sauce ingredients. One never knows when you will need to cook for 50 guests.

Kirby

Most scariest experience? The first thing that comes to mind is when I was about 10 - 11 years old. We had a bad thunderstorm in the middle of July where the sky turned black in the middle of the day. These kind of storms are not normal for that time of year. Anyway, I was standing in the kitchen when the lightning stuck and the thunder boomed and the lights went out. I was already afraid of storms and to have this happen petrified me.

What's in my pantry? I can fix several meals. I grocery shop once a week buying groceries to tide us over for the next week. I stock up on BOGO items so there's always something to fix. As for desserts, I could make cookies, a cake or brownies. Tonight we are having Border Skillet Chili with cornbread.

pennst8r
01-28-2008, 10:42 AM
Pantry-Pasta and ingredients to make sauce. Freezer-I usually have steaks, shrimp and I just discovered the Jenny-O turkey breast that goes into the oven frozen. Dessert? Flour and sugar, etc so just about anything! I'm making the Barefoot Contessa's brownies today....yum!

Scariest? Lost youngest DS when he was about 3 during MVMCP, about 5 minutes before the fireworks started ....so you couldn't look through the crowd. It took about 20 minutes before security said they found him. As I was talking with security, a man walked past and doubled back to ask if I was looking for a little boy. He then said he had just taken him to the lost children center. Apparently, there were quite a few kids there for him to play with.:goodvibes

Thank you.

As for todays QOTD, my pantry is stocked with almost everything I would need to make all kinds of different dishes. I am still trying to think of what to make for dinner tonight. I think my daughter would like shrimp tempuara, so I might do that along with vegetable tempura, miso soup, rice, and other side dishes.

Say if you had a younger age child who was being picked on, what would you do about it?

I would either try to contact the child's parents, teacher, or principal at the school in order to try to solve the problem.

My husband tried to teach our boys how to take care of themselves in these type of situations. I agreed as long as they didn't start the problem.

AlexWyattMommy

Well, there is always the home computer schooling option if talking to the teacher, principle and/or parents didn't help.

I think the main thing is for my child to know I am on HIS side and will do whatever I need to make it better for him. He can learn to defend himself against bullies when he is older. He shouldn't have to do it now. This is not a life lesson he needs to learn.

Kirby

Say if you had a younger age child who was being picked on, what would you do about it?
Find out all the details, i.e. when and where it's happening, what is exactly going on. Then go from there up the chain of command if it's at school. If it's happening at home (playing with friends in the neighborhood), I'd have a talk with the bully's parents. Or, if it's happening while participating in an extracurricular activity, have a talk with the teacher/coach first and go from there.

There are places that can recover files from a disk crash. The information is still on the drive, but the registry does not know how to find it. Before you do anything see if there is a person in your area that can recover your lost photos.

Thanks, Unfortunately I tried that. I took it to Geek Squad. The standard extraction wouldn't work. The next step up would cost me $500 and the step after that $1200. As much as I miss my pictures I just can't do that. I do have the old hard drive so if I come across a cheaper place I can send it.

We have another tv in the basement, and one in our room.

No big party this year, just our neighbor, who we kiddingly say is our little brother--he's always over, we sometimes feel the need to feed him, etc.

*Won ton wrappers- have never used them
*Fresh peaches-cobbler
*Hot dogs- grilled and eaten plain or with chili
*Corned beef in a can- never have used it
*Macaroni- probably with cheese or in soup

Well, I guess we are behind the times. We have a 32" plain ole tv in the family room, no cable and a very old 20" in the bedroom. We'll definately have to purchase a new tv for the bedroom because it was made before VCR's were. We'll just get the box for the tv in the family room. One day, maybe we'll get cable or something of that sort. :rolleyes1

I'm watching the game today for the commercials. All my potty and kitchen breaks will be during the game. ;) Carol's got mono and since both her ears are beginning to hurt, :eek: we won't be having anyone over or going anywhere.

Hope Carol feels better. I don't like football, but is having to cook and do things for the Superbowl. :( So, here is my question....what is up with the American Idol people?????? Ryan Seacrest is hosting this pregame show thingy right now, Jordan Sparks is singing the national anthem, and Paula Abdual :confused: is singing in the halftime :confused3 . What happened to people like Gwen Stefani, and Fergie??????? :cool2: Does the producer or decision maker really, really, like American Idol to have all these people part of the show?

Kirby
02-03-2008, 10:39 PM
Didn't start watching until 15 minutes before the game began so I didn't see Ryan Seacrest. Thought the Prison Break commercial where they escaped up onto the field kinda funny. The new commercials weren't all that good this year. I think that I liked the Budweiser commercials where the man could breathe fire and then caught the house on fire and the other one with the horse working out to make the team the next year the cutest.

Tom Petty did a decent job on the half time show. Even Carol liked it. He just went up and sang his songs, didn't try to impress anyone. It was nice to be able to understand what he said.

I really didn't have any chores as a child. My mom would have us do the dishes from time to time but got tired of our complaining and stopped asking us. As I got older, I began helping out on my own. I don't remember if my sister did or not.

Had chores for as far back as I can remember. Once I turned 11 I had a list full of them. Dust Baseboards & half walls; vacuum, wash breakfast dishes, laundry duty, put supper on and then I got to do dinner dishes. Sister had pet duty-feeding dogs, cleaning cat litter, dusting furniture. Brother did nothing. Go figure.

Interesting, so of course, I had to look it up ;)

Enjoy this traditional Mardi Gras yeast cake
Also known as Twelfth Night Cake, the brioche-style King Cake is prepared in New Orleans bakeries for the period between the Twelfth Night (January 6) and Ash Wednesday.

The tradition is thought to have begun with French settlers, continuing a custom dating back to 12th century France, when a similar cake was used to celebrate the coming of the three wise men bearing gifts twelve days after Christmas, calling it the feast of Epiphany, Twelfth Night, or King's Day.

Though the cakes are baked in many shapes now, they were originally round in shape to portray the circular route taken by the Kings to confuse King Herod who was trying to follow the wise men so he could kill the Christ child.

The cakes usually contain a bean, pea, or a figurine symbolizing the baby Jesus. In 1871 the tradition of choosing the queen of the Mardi Gras was determined by who drew the prize in the cake. It is definitely considered good luck to the person who gets the figure, and that person usually holds the next King Cake party.

The Rex Krewe, a Mardi Gras parade organization, chose the festival's symbolic colors, and since 1872 the colors have been used to tint the cake's icing. The colors of the King Cake are purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.

Mardi Gras King Cake
* 1 envelope active dry yeast
* 1/4 cup warm water, about 105 to 115 degrees
* 2 tablespoons milk, scalded and cooled
* 4 to 5 cups flour
* 8 ounces butter
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 4 eggs
* 2 teaspoons melted butter
* very small plastic doll, a large bean, or coin
* light corn syrup for topping
* granulated sugar colored with food coloring pastes: green, purple, and yellow

PREPARATION:
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk and about 1/2 cup of flour. In a large bowl, blend butter, sugar, salt and eggs. Add yeast mixture and mix thoroughly. Gradually, add 2 1/2 cups flour to make a Place in a greased bowl and brush with melted butter. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until double in volume, about 3 hours. Use 1 cup or more flour to knead dough and roll into a 4 to 5 foot long rope. Form into a oval on a 14 x 17" greased baking sheet, connecting ends of the rope with a few drops of water to make a good seal.

Press the doll, bean, or coin into the dough from bottom. Cover dough ring with a damp cloth and let rise until double in volume, about 1 hour. Bake at 325° for 35 to 45 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Brush top of cake with corn syrup and sprinkle with alternating bands of colored sugar. If desired, freeze cake.

Someone pulling out in front of me when there is no one behind me instead of waiting until I passed.

I'll have to give the third one some thought. I can't think of one right off the top of my head.

People standing too close to me at the checkout, and making their way in front of me when my transaction is not even over.

People tailing me when I am driving.

People who don't replace the toilet paper after the last roll.

People who ask me about my taxes, and how much I had gotten back.

People who are always late, and I have to remind them, this, and that.

Oops, more then three, but I do have more LOL.

I usually stay with breakfast foods, but my family (DH, and 3 teen sons), race for the leftovers from the meal the night before. My DS's usually wins this race and my DH ends up with an empty container.

***Ann, do you have a recipe for your pulled pork? I would be interested in getting it if you don't have to use a crockpot to make it since I don't have one.

AlexWyattMommy
02-24-2008, 05:30 PM
My recipe does use a crockpot. :sad:

I did get the recipe off of one of boards here. It was basically some pork (shoulder or loin your choice), bottle of Kraft BBQ sauce, and the juice of one orange. In the crockpot for a few hours on low. My pot cooks really hot, I can't cook anything on high without it burning.

You could probably do the whole thing in a dutch oven (or big pot) over low for a few hours too.

Hey welcome back Schnerk! :thumbsup2

I have absolutely no coordination or sense of rythm on my feet so I do not really dance, lol! I can bob my head (or bang my head as the music style may deem) with the best of them though! :rolleyes:

Love to dance, and it's usually to music most would say I'm too old for. :rolleyes: I like alt. rock -- the stuff my teenage son listens to. It makes me move. (and I'm not above belting out the tunes in the car either)

I also like classical music, and wouldn't mind learning how to ballroom dance.

Okay, What Is That Dance?

Only the coolest dance ever! You put one hand behind your head and the other one straight out. Next you bring your elbows together while rotating your upper body slowly to your left. Once you reach as far as you can stretch you rotate quickly back to the right. It looks like you are one of those old fashion sprinkler heads... AND TOTALLY COOL!!!:cool1:

I was just watching the news, and had heard about the passenger that died on the plane. Two of the oxygen tanks did not work, as well as the difibulator.

If you were on a plane, and a situation like this happened, what would you do, and think?

Our news said that the passenger's cousin, who alerted the media had mis-represented some of the fact. Either way, it is so sad. :(

I would think that the only thing you could do is to administer CPR and mouth to mouth, and pray.

:(

I'm not sure what else could be done? Just hope there are enough people who know what they are doing so they can take turns until the plane lands.

Here they said she was under a Drs. care, the difibulator was hooked up and was in working order, but is designed to not engage as long as there is a heart beat. They also said there was O2 in the bottles, but he preferred to force is into her lungs, so the bottles were not used.

I believe the account from the Dr. They are just looking for somebody to blame and for $$$$$. It was determined she died from natural causes.

What weird things have you noticed other drivers do while driving?

Reading a book. Seriously, the driver was reading a book, not a map, not directions, a book.
