What was your most and least favorite school lunch food?

All through elementary school (until 8th grade) I went home for lunch. School was only a block away. In high school I brought my lunch mostly, but I remember hating any type of meat product they tried to make. Favorite would be their onion rings.

I packed my lunch most of the time but had to buy on pizza day, every Friday.

Most favorite school lunch - pizza
least favorite school lunch - I believe it was hamburgers

I'd want the 50% off coupon for Disney please.

Favorite was a tuna sub.
Least favorite was the horrible waxy french fries with rubbery hamburger.

I wouldn't mind having a 50% off coupon for the type of jeans I like to wear.

I can't remember what kind of school cafeteria food that I didn't like. I just remember that it usually wasn't very good. In elementary school, the rolls were the most popular. They were huge and so delicious. Another thing that we liked was the ice cream. It was served in rectangle bars wrapped in paper. We would buy grahem crackers and make our own ice cream sandwiches. In middle school, it was the chicken fried steak and gravy that was good. In high school, I took my lunch. The lines were too long and it didn't give you much time to eat.

This year I will not be cooking the traditional family affair. I will be driving to my sweet brother's house and enjoying a feast cooked by someone else! We'll be having turkey and the usual sides.

I'm English so we don't have Thankgiving. For Christmas though we are cooking the traditional turkey meal with traditional starter (sorry appitizer!) and desert for the whole family, all 12 of us! Fitting 12 into my dining room should be fun!

Hi all!! Sorry I haven't been around for awhile. I've not been feeling well. I just found out a few days ago that I have endometriosis. At least now I have some answers as to why I've been feeling how I do. So anyway, hopefully now that I know what's going on and the doctor has started treating me, I'll feel better soon.

So..as to the QOTD: I'll be cooking a traditional Thanksgiving meal here. My family, my parents, my sister, nephews and my niece and her husband are all coming. I don't mind though. I love cooking and...:ssst: I cook better than everyone else :rotfl2:

We do get all the fixings from Cracker Barrel. Their turkey is okay, but the sweet potato casserole is amazing.

Since moving to FL we use to eat a T-Day meal at WDW. The last few years they blocked out the DDE discount for major holidays. :sad2: So we plan off property stuff now.

Last year we had quite an experience...
DH runs a Turkey Trot (road race) somewhere every year. I had him put the turkey in the oven before he left for the race.
Someone crashed their car into a main utility pole a few blocks from our house and we were without power almost all of T-Day last year.
We dropped our half cooked turkey along a country road so some critters could at least have a nice feast.
Meanwhile we went to DTD and ate at RFC. I have their Safari Club card and was able to be seated in just a few minutes. Which is WONDERFUL for a busy holiday.
This year I hope for better luck than last year and to make a nice dinner at home.

:goodvibes :lmao: that is nice that you decided to share your turkey with some critters :thumbsup2 . Hope your Thanksgiving turns out better this year.

I cook Thanksgiving lunch, and everyone comes over to our house. This year, it seems like there will be more people attending, but not sure exactly how many. Last year, my ham was done, but while my turkey was in the oven, we had an earthquake-it was after our big one that we had a couple weeks back. So hopefully this year, nothing like that will happen, and we will have a nice day with everyone.

Really buttery mashed potatoes. I mix in sour cream, too. I had a sweet potato casserole this summer (we had a lot of families at a beach house and decided to make a thanksgiving dinner) and it was so good, so I'll make that this year. I usually make perogies, since my mom always did.

This is the first year my parents are coming for Thanksgiving, so I'm already looking through recipes, and ordered a fresh turkey.

Only 3 things! This is hard!! OK, I guess I would go with :
1) A day trip to London (OK cheating I know as there is so much to do there, but I would do the tour of Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, then a trip on the London Eye - it is like a big wheel where you sit in a big capsule and you get to see all the sights of London, then take you for a traditional afternoon tea at Harrods.)

2) A trip to Rockingham Castle which is 2 minutes away from my house. Parts of the building are 1000 years old. Queen Elizabeth 1 stayed there many times, plus the family that owned it in the Victorian times were friends with Charles Dickens and he actually wrote some of his books whilst staying there. The village and house in his novel Bleake House are based on that house and the village I live in.

3) A day out in Oxford to see the collages and go punting on the river.

OK, I have a question. If you were visiting England where would you like to visit?

bobbiwoz
11-08-2007, 02:23 PM
Ceasar's Creek Lake; Kings Island Themepark; Cincinnati Zoo
....

We must live pretty close to each other, these are all within an hour of my house...we go to Ceasar's Creek to walk our dogs and we're members of the Cincinnati Zoo. Do you go to the holiday lights?

Bobbi:goodvibes

PS. I would take people to the Air Force Museum, to Bob Evans farm...as a way to get there myself, and to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Oh -- I think I am going to go visit danauk! :lmao:
I would love to see all the british places. Maybe even a Jack the Ripper tour. Although that does sound pretty grusome....
And I would need to to a train over to DLP. :woohoo:

Now when people visit here -- of course I would (and do) take them to WDW. :yay: That also may include a trip into Cast Connection, which can be an adventure all its own. :rotfl:
Then if they still need somewhere else, there are plenty of other places to choose -- from outlet malls to the ocean or gulf. :cheer2:

I still want to see Sea World and Busch Gardens Tampa. We have day tickets already to SW and I am waiting for when they have their holiday decor up. Which may be now, if they are like WDW. :rotfl2: Maybe over T-Day weekend. :rolleyes1

We did this every year while my kids were growing up. It made them see a different perspective and taught them something about giving and sharing that I could never have taught them by simply telling.

My son and daughter always chose someone near their own age. It was easy for them to select things for the child because it was stuff they would like to get. Usually the angel tree card didn't list precise things, only girl/boy, age, and sizes. We always picked a toy or two, a fancy outfit they might not otherwise spend money on, and some essentials.

If I were to pick I would probably choose a girl about age 5 or so. I love shopping for little girl things. With my own daughter now 22 years old, I miss it!

Thinking of chinese food, I'd like to learn how to make chicken with broccoli that actually tastes like the one from the chinese restaurant. Sounds like a simple dish, but it isn't. I have no idea what they put in their sauce, but I can't duplicate it. Not even close!

Yes, it is sort of similar, but it is spicier. It is just white meat chicken, broccoli florets, slices of carrot, water chestnuts and some kind of light brown sauce. It is the sauce that makes the dish delicious and unique.

Well, I already ordered the one for my cousin's family in Florida. That'll get there after Thanksgiving.
We are just getting everyone gift cards this year. My family is all out East and it seems to cost more in shipping than in the presents. We decided that we don't want to give all our money to the Post Office, but we don't want to give up on the exchange totally, yet (that may change with the economy).
So after Thanksgiving, my gift cards will go out. My Sis will wrap those up pretty and I will wrap up the ones she sends.

Here's the thread
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1520766

There is a SDV event 8/21-8/24 2008.
A lot of the swappers have expressed an interest in going or being there.
We will already be there (hopefully the economy doesn't slide back) and so there are tentative plans to meet for meals.

When do you start passing out and/or mailing out your Christmas gifts? :santa:

This year I am hauling all DS and DIL presents down to AZ with us.
The rest to out of state relatives will be mailed the last week of Nov.
We pass out presents Christmas Day to those here......with one being opened on Christmas Eve.
I give my friends theirs when I see them. Sometimes early Dec., some times early Jan. ;)

We don't do a lot of gift giving anymore. My husband's side of the family does a Chinese Christmas exchange. I give out special Hallmark ornaments commemorating New Home, 1st Christmas, etc. If any of these go out of town, I mail them the first week of December.

On my side of the family we buy gifts for needy children instead of each other. I do purchase gifts for my only niece and nephew on my side since there is only two. But since they are both in college, a gift card is the best thing for them and I give it to them when I see them, usually on Christmas Day.

If you were to go into an antique shop, what sort of items would you look for? And, if you were to purchase just one item, what would it be?

AlexWyattMommy

I used to love looking around antique stores. Unfortunately, older breakable things don't mesh with two active, running around the house boys.

The only safe thing would be a flat top trunk.

What is a Chinese Christmas exchange?
It's where everyone brings a wrapped gift (ours must be brand new, never used, worth $20). We each draw numbers, the person with #1 picking one of the gifts first and opening it. Then the person with #2 can either steal #1's gift away from them or pick an unopened gift. If #2 chooses to steal #1's gift then #1 gets to pick another gift and open it for all to see. Then the person with #3 can either steal #1 or #2's gift or pick an unopened one. Should #3 steal a gift from #2, then #2 can choose another unopened gift or steal from #1. Gifts can be stolen up to three times and then it is locked in with the last person who steals it. This can cause quite a bit of strategy to come into play. This game can be wrapped up fairly quickly or go on for quite a long time depending on how many people are playing and the number of "wanted" gifts in the mix. We call it a Chinese Christmas but there may be other names for it.

If you were to go into an antique shop, what sort of items would you look for? And, if you were to purchase just one item, what would it be?
I like to look for things that I remember my grandmother having in her house. Not to buy but just to see what they are currently going for. One thing I do like to look for and have found two are fairy lights. They hold tea lights and look like little lamps. I usually find them in sets of two and since I only want one, I don't purchase them. I have a blue and a pink one. It's fun to look for and I'm not in any hurry to have a huge collection of them.

We had gotten a new upright freezer today, and it has alot of space, so I am baking more banana bread to freeze. So, today's QOTD is-

We do own a large upright freezer and have for years. :lmao: (Can't believe it is still going strong. It must be 20 years old and never been serviced.)
Not much of one to bake and store. But I do like to buy from Omaha Steaks when they have sales and store those. I don't stock up on anything as I have been burned enough times in the past with electric going out for too long due to storms or whatever. Up north, if in the winter, people have the option of sticking their items outside. Here in FL :rolleyes1 ...
I do fill it up with water during hurricane warnings.

We have an upright, but it is not a very good one. It is always defrosting itself. Have a huge pile of ice on the bottom that I need to go take care of soon. So I don't store stuff for the long haul. Just pizzas that don't fit in my side-by-side frig.

I've never owned a stand alone freezer, so I wouldn't know what to store in all that space! I would stock up on Breyers ice cream when it goes on sale! And I would make big batches of italian wedding soup and freeze it in there too. Aside from that, :confused3

You are welcome to trade me a few days and you can soak up the 80+ degree temps here in late November. You can go to the beach (about a 2 minute ride away to get to a small beach or a 15 minute ride to the nicer one), walk around a touristy Greek town nearby or take a drive over to WDW.

I spend Tuesday mornings in the Fourth Grade and Wednesday mornings before school in the school store and the Kindergarten during school hours. I also help out during the Scholastic book fairs, most parties and when ever the teacher request me. Which seems likes lots. Today we got to make pumpkin bread in the Fourth grade. Smelled real good, but I'm not sure how well it'll come out. Some may be as heavy as a brick. :rotfl:

Luv2Roam
11-22-2007, 07:51 AM
Yeah, just in case your DH had back problems in the past, esp ask about Sciatica. (Found the spelling. :lmao: ) I was told it is not unusual because of course all I was doing was laying around after the surgery recouperating. (Then needed PT and chiropractor for that on top of PT for the rotary cuff surgery. :sad2: )
And I am remembering a little more. It was not during the rest after the surgery I had the issue. It was the weeks right after when I went back to the daily grind. I was off work for 5 weeks. THEN the Sciatica hit me soon after I went back to work and my usual routine. And it hit me hard. Good luck! Maybe he will not have that issue at all.

Today -- DH is out running a Turkey Trot race. I am relaxing. :surfweb:
He comes home and gets the turkey in the oven. I cook the remainder.

Relax some more. :woohoo:

And then probably go to the Osboorne Lights or maybe MK. :santa: :cheer2:

Believe it or not, I am sitting here at not quite 4 am  waiting for the others (DD and DDIL) to get ready to head out for some black Friday shopping. I never do this!! But DDIL wanted to and we didn't want her to have to go alone.

I have only done Black Friday once, and rather enjoyed it. But never had the courage or desire to do so again.

This morning I have lots of packages to get together for a mailing. (No exchanges though.

We went to MK last night. :santa: We had our photo taken several times by different photographers with the castle as the background. Some with wreathe swags. One should have been very cool as the Partners statue was on one side, with the castle in the background. But the photos did not turn out well.
We bought one shot of the 11 taken, and I will post it later.
The castle with the Dream lights is BEAUTIFUL. That's why we had our photo snapped. The picture does not do it justice, but you will see.

Then while driving home the fireworks started when we were behind MK. So we pulled over to watch. I just opened the sunroof cover, laid back and watched the plumes directly overhead. :yay: Very cool, and relaxing.

On the way home -- hear a "poof", and had a flat tire. :sad2: I don't know what we hit in the road, but it sliced open the side of one our tires.

Great day up until that point. One of my errands will be to buy a new tire today. :sad1: It could have been much worse, and that I am thankful for. ;)

I think about going shopping early today every year--but would rather sleep in. I'd love to know what great bargains you all found, tho!:woohoo:

We had the traditional dinner--

Turkey (a fresh turkey this time, brined)
Cranberry ??? --it was good, my stepmom made it
broccoli casserole
green beans
corn
sweet potato casserole
mashed potatoes
2 kinds of stuffing

pumpkin pie
apple pie

I try a new stuffing each year--still don't have a great favorite. We ended up with 3 extra people this year, which was fun. I liked having a big crowd at the table.

Back from shopping ....for now ;) We are headed out later for some "normal" shopping.
We only hit one store...Circuit City.
Arrived 20 minutes before opening (opening was 5  ) and the line was around the corner, all down the side and around the next corner and half way down the mall back  And it was cold.
600 limited in at a time. We made it. Got all we wanted. Video games and movies. DVD TV sets for $13. There were some things we were somewhat interested in but they were gone fast. Things for the Wii.
Took longer standing in line to check out then it did to do the shopping. I think we waited 45 minutes in line.
And there were still people at least around the first corner waiting to get it.
It was interesting, not sure I would do it again.

Got to mine about 20 minutes early, only a short line.
Got in, got my stuf, got out and came home.
Staying home.

Looked at the parking of lot of the mall, Circut City, and Target and thanked my lucky stars that we are doing giftcards & memberships and don't need any BF specials.

I got DH up early and we got our Mickey snow globe at Penney's. Then we got a few things at the Disney Store (one was a gift) and then back to Penney's to get two gifts.. I need to verify my list, but I think that completes my shopping. We are back home and DH is sleeping with his ice pack on.

I didn't go out shopping but I got up at 6:20 this morning and purchase the Tom Tom GPS at staples online. Got it for a great price and my DH also had a rewards coupon which we also applied to the final price. Was very pleased and didn't even have to leave the house to flight the crowds. :surfweb:

DH is off all pain killers and says his arm does not hurt. We are going to see Enchanted this afternoon. Has anybody seen it?

Only a girlfriend outing on the 11th.
DD comes home on the 17th.
Haven't heard anything about a company party yet, so who knows on that.

We went to see Beowolf on IMAX 3-D....fun!!

We always tried to get together with some of our favorite individuals over the holidays.

Right now we have a dinner planned with one of our couple friends than we plan on visiting one of the Christmas shops to see the trees decorated.

A family outting is planned on Dec 22nd which includes dinner and seeing the Christmas light display.

Christmas Eve is a evening with my Husband's family and Christmas Day we spend with my family.

New Year's Eve we always have our neighbors from our old neighborhood visit for the evening and night. (Won't let them drive on NYE).

So far that's what our calendar looks like.

Everyone's menus look yummy! I'm ready for another go round already. I just love Thanksgiving!

I woke up at 3:35 am yesterday morning and gave getting up for Kohl's 4 am opening but then went back to sleep. I do want to do the early Black Friday shopping one day just to experience it. I did take Carol and her friend, Demi, shopping yesterday afternoon to a local outdoor mall. The weather was perfect, chilly with lots of sunshine, just right to stroll from store to store with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. The crowds were good too. I guess most everyone hit the stores early.

We do have a few things scheduled for the holidays. On Dec. 1st, Carol is marching in the nationally televised Adolphus Neiman Marcus Children's Christmas parade. Look for the Heath High School Band if it shows in your area. She'll be with the drill team directly behind them. I doubt they'll show the drill team but you never know.

On Dec. 8th, the drill team is having a Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction. On Dec. 15th, the drill team is having a Mother/Daughter tea and ornament exchange. On the 22nd is the Lambe family Christmas. That's all that is planned at the moment but it looks like each weekend has something going on.

The mother daughter tea and ornament exchange sounds like fun, although I don't drink tea, or coffee.
Maybe I can have my daughter go shopping with my husband for an ornament, and I can get her one, and we can exchange it as a annual tradition :) :santa:.

Yeah, I'm not real sure what to expect. I just know that we have to dress up. And I think that the ornament exchange is between the girls. I think that taking Shayla out to lunch for a girl's day out would be a good start for a tradition. Maybe to a local tea room or something.

Do you like spicy foods? How spicy are you able to eat?
I used to could eat real spicy foods, the spicier the better. Nowadays, I tend to stay away from them. I get heart burn real easy especially in the evenings. I'm hoping that losing weight will help.

I love spicy foods. When my DH makes things at home, it is really spicy but good. If we go to Thai restaurants, I make my food spicy. If it is not spicy enough, then I use the dry chili, or pitnanba-the spicy Thai sauce.

Do you have any winter or Christmas traditions?
Would putting up the tree the weekend after Thanksgiving and taking it down the day after Christmas be one?:rotfl:

We have a pair of sock Christmas mice that my MIL made us years ago that always go up inside our tree next to the trunk area. She died on October 14th, it was bittersweet putting them in this year.

That's all I can think of that we really do year after year after year. My trees have gotten smaller as time goes by. I purchased a four foot artificial pre-lit this year. It didn't take long to put up and it certainly won't take long to take down. :woohoo:

Is it easier with girls?? :goodvibes

I try getting DSs involved in Xmas preparations, but they're really not into it. They'd rather eat the cookies than bake them. Altho, they do like to put up the tree--probably because it's like a big puzzle with all the branches. (fake) I used to be really picky about my tree, but for the last 5 years or so I've let them do it. It ends up lopsided with all the ornaments toward the front middle, but they have a good time. :santa:

We actually have quite a few traditions, now that I think about it.

:santa: We visit relatives every Christmas Eve.
:santa: We all bake dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies the weekend before Christmas.
:santa: We go to the same Christmas tree farm every year and we all help decorate the tree
:santa: We make Gingerbread houses
:santa: We let the kids dress in their PJs and we pile them in the truck with hot chocolate and cookies and we go look at neighborhood Christmas lights.
:santa: I always read Twas the Night Before Christmas and the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas Eve.
:santa: Also we have several "must watch" holiday movies

I love Christmas!:cloud9:

Is it easier with girls??
Not really. I have one of each (boy and girl) and they both felt the same once they got older about decorating the tree. James got to where he only wanted to put up "his" ornaments and then once he started driving, he was out the door and down the street before I said "Let's decorate....". Carol has resigned herself to helping and for the last couple of years has asked friends over to help decorate the tree. They have a good time at it. Of course, the deal is that I have to take it all down by myself. That's why I purchased a new, smaller artificial tree this year. It doesn't hold near the amount of ornaments that I have and it's pre-lit. Take down will be a snap! ;)

Hi guys! I know I haven't been around alot lately. It has been pretty hectic around here. My grandmother passed away a couple of weeks ago and it really threw me for a loop. Since then I have been trying to play catch up with the boards and with work. Luckily, there are lots of orders this time of year so that is keeping me nice and busy :thumbsup2 although it looks like I won't be making it to MouseFest afterall. :sad1: Other than that, I have fortunately finished my holiday shopping and am now trying to catch up with the Boards and play with my kids.

Okay, QOTDs

Sorry, I don't really like spicy HOT food. It's just not for me.

Traditions?
1st gift for each of us is new PJs on the eve.
DS and I bake TONS of cookies and make candy each year.
There is always a new ornament with a picture of the kids.
Hmmm, there are alot of other little things that we do that I am not sure would be considered traditions.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Here DD is definitely more into traditions than DS....she is the sentimental one.

We always bake and decorate cookies together.
Always have an advent calendar.
Must always have the same stockings and holders (she wants to inherit them all because they can't be split up ;) )
When she lived at home, she would unpack (and later pack up) all the ornaments and I hang them.
The Santa head MUST be hung up
Christmas Eve is music and new pajamas and an extra (that has changed over the years. It is something to keep a person busy that evening)
One gift is open on Christmas Eve
She plays "Santa" Christmas morning. We take turns opening, one at a time.
Must have cinnamon rolls Christmas morning.
A gingerbread house must be done also.

There may be more :rotfl:

Traditions-
*My daughter and I usually bake cookies, and other baked goodies for the holidays, but we don't have as much time, and with Brandon around, it is hard to make a variety, so we won't be making that many :(. Unless, I bake while the kids are sleeping.

*We usually get gingerbread house, but this year we are not. It goes to waste each year. I am going to see if Shayla is making one at school, and if not, then we will make a small one.

*Decorating the tree together.

It used to be "Mom, I wet the bed". Which meant, taking off the sheets, putting them in wash, cleaning up which ever child it was, putting dry clothes on them and letting them sleep in our bed until theirs was dry.

Yup, nothing more annoying than having to do chores before morning.

My dog shaking her collar in order to wake us up, she does this so either my DH or myself will get up to put her outside. It used to be the kids when they were babies. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids but I also love my sleep and I definately didn't like getting up in the middle of the night.

Now it's my dog jumping on the back door and barking/howling to get in when there is a storm. And the storm doesn't have to be over head either. It can be 50 miles away and he lets us know about it.
