Pirates of the Caribbean is on t.v. tonight. Dh and I have not seen it. I think i'm just going to record it and watch it after the kids go to bed. I have a friend who's 4 year old watched the movie and talks about it all the time. I'm not sure whether or not to let my dd's see the movie. It is a Disney movie and all but it does seem so violent, are there actual scenes where they'll stab and bleed and all that gruesome stuff? I know all families are different, but do your kids watch it and how old are they?
I'm thinking it might be a good idea to just watch it first, and see if I think it's ok for my dds. :confused3
I do know i'm excited to see it though, even though , i know it took me long enough.

My kids are currently 8 and 9. They have seen it many times. We bought it when it was first released on DVD. It has all the typical swashbuckling type scenes in it. To be honest, there is not a lot of blood. The scariest thing would be the pirates themselves, (I won't give anything away since you haven't seen it). Other than that, I personally don't see a problem with it for kids. But, having said that, to be sure,it is probably a good idea like you said to watch it first and then decide for yourself. You will know better than anyone else, right!!
Enjoy!!! I absolutely love the movie. I just saw the second one yesterday. It is alot more violent and scarier than the first one, but just as good. I just love Will Turner and of course Capt.Jack!!! pirate:

You should watch it first. Only you really know what will freak your kids out. And once they've seen something disturbing to them it will be hard to get it out of their heads. For what it's worth my kids have watched it oh about 200 times!! Seriously we wore out a dvd already!! My kids were 6,9,and 12 when they first saw it.
Enjoy the movie!! popcorn::

This is not a kids movie. 4 is way to young, imho. However it is an excellent movie, so if you see it first and decide to show it to your child later, you wont be put out by having to watch it again.

let them watch it. there is no swearing, blood, only some sword fighting. just tell your kids that it is all pretend and they will be fine.

IMHO both PC movies are quite intense. Took DS's 10 and 13 to opening weekend last week and DS 10 spent a great deal of the movie leaning into me with his eyes closed and ears covered. You know your children best so I would recommend watching it first and going from there. pirate:

My DS5 watched the first movie on DVD last week and did fine. My 9 yr old neighbor watched it a birthday sleepover and his mom had to go pick him up at 3:00 am. The movie is very well done but the plot is difficult to follow for little ones and the skeleton scenes are pretty scary IMO.

My kids were 3,5 and 11 when we got POTC on DVD...They loved it and still watch it. We took all three of them (now 5, 7, 13) to see POTC II and they all loved it. You know your kids best. Watch it yourself first and then decide.

I asked a similar question. Here's a link to the responses. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1153845
We BRIEFLY started watching last night and quickly turned the channel. We turned it on where some lady was being chased by a pirate, she stabbed him, and skeleton pirates attacked. WOW :scared1: DSs were going to bed and we didn't want them "peeking" downstairs and seeing that!!! It seemed pretty frightening to us.
My 2 cents - Make sure you watch the movie before letting your children watch it.

I agree with the poster who said you should watch it first and decide. Like others said, there's no foul language (that I can remember) and little blood, but there is the typical pirate movie sword violence and some scary images. It was too much for my kids (7, 5 and 1). Other kids might be ok with the scary stuff. Nothing immoral in it though, so that's good. I loved both movies, and I'm sure you will too, regardless if the kids watch or not! The second one is considerably scarier.

You should definitely watch it first because every child is different. We are careful about what the kids watch but with That being said my DS6 and DD9 absolutely love the first movie and understand it is just that, a movie and pretend. They pretend to be Cap't Jack and Elizabeth in make believe play and really have a lot of fun with it. My DS6 was not scared at all and both are currently reading a book about true pirate history( they know in real life the pirates were bad, not like Cap't Jack as my son says). We also took them to see the 2nd movie and they enjoyed it but the plot was over my son's head. Again, every child is different and only you know what they can handle.

Thanks so much for asking this question! My DD who is 2.5 is REALLY into pirates lately. She rode POTC with us last January and was MORTIFIED... but since then we have talked about "the pirates" and now she goes on and on about how they are "just pretend" and "like puppets" and "pretty cool".... :rotfl: Now that McDonald's has the Pirates Happy Meals out she keeps talking about going back to WDW to ride POTC and how this time she is "going to be so brave because it's not really scary"....
I was wondering if I should let her watch the movie, since she asks me about a million times a day to show her the preview for the new POTC ride online!
She's not easily scared at this point... I think she'd do fine...

i watched POTC first then let DD watch...she was 4. She has not been bothered by dark things (Tim Burton movies) and is absolutly nuts for Pirates. and has had a Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow poster on the back of her door since we moved into this house (she was 5)...she's an odd kid and I know that. For her Haunted Mansion was harder to watch. She was the youngest(she's 6) in the theater last weekend when we went to see POTC II but she loved it except where Jack gets slimed. Watch it first only you know your kids. I did tell a coworker NOT to take her 3.5 y/o twins to see POTC II....

We re-watched it the other night to see if we would let our almost 5 year old watch it. We decided to let him watch the 1st 30 minutes & then turned it off. When an ax was thrown & hit a pirate in the back I decided he wouldn't be watching it. He is not affected by scary movies & know what things are pretend (he's already questioning Santa & the Easter Bunny). We just didn't want him to be exposed to the violence. When he is 11 or so we may let him watch the entire thing. The first 30 min introduced the characters & there is great sword fight, which my DS loved. I would watch it yourself & then decide.

It's all about what YOU think is okay for your kids. Mine happen to watch nearly everything I do. Sam(6), Pierce(5), and Liz(3). The only movies we don't let them watch are the REALLY scary stuff, or dirty stuff. We went to see POTC2 and they loved it (well the three year old fell asleep). The only movie that ever scared them was the opening of Scooby Doo of all things. That's probably because they have always watched everything with us unlike many kids who haven't sat through ghosts, zombies, demons and the like. Just like food, you get used to what mom and dad put on your plate!
If they aren't ready for it, you'll just give them nightmares, so I totally agree you should watch it first!

i think u should watch it first and then decide for yourself. u know u and your kids better than any1. just for kicks tho, my brothers ages are 5, 9, and 12 and my parents let them watch it. it's really not that bloody or grusome. personally i think the scariest thing in the movie is the pirates. but it is up to u. i saw the second one a couple of days ago and it was scarier for younger kids than the first. but it was awesome. :teeth: hope i gave a little insight.

I told my 10yo today that the brain is like a computer and what you put in stays there forever (barring any major viruses or shutdowns, but that's another story :)). Anyway, I told her that there is an appropriate time to introduce certain things and an inappropriate time. Childhood is NOT the time to introduce violence, sex, drug or alcohol use and the like. Remember the time when there was a phrase called "childhood innocence"? Sadly, with today's media and non-discerning parents, there seems to be no such thing anymore. IMO, POTC is not appropriate for young children, regardless of how desensitized they are.
Boiling the frog and by the time my kids are parents, I can't imagine what THEIR kids will be up against. :sad2:

My older son will be turning 6 next month, and wants a pirate birthday party. While I think he's too young to see the Dead Man's Chest in the theater, we are considering letting him watch the first movie on DVD; we'll have to watch it again with that in mind before we make a decision.

I agree the skeleton scenes are very creepy. We rented the first one the other night so we could watch it again and DD6 wanted to watch it. She has been scared of POC on previous trips so I wasn't sure because it is a little violent too. Anyway she watched it and was not scared at all. How is the 2nd one for kids to watch? Usually we don't let our dd watch PG-13 movies at all.

We took DD 12 and DD10 to see it. They loved it but they saw the first one, too. DD10 held my hand for about 2 minutes but otherwise, nothing. They were fine. I think everyone needs to make the decision that is best for their child as all children are different. When in doubt, as all PP's say.....watch it yourself first. :happytv:

Thanks for all of your replys!
I did watch it first and recorded it. The next morning I let dd7 watch it with ds9. She really wanted to see it because he talks about it alot. I told her it was all pretend, and of course she understands that, but she still covered her head with the blanket quite a few times, and we told her when that scene was over. She didn't mind the skelotons, she knows it's pretend, but she doesn't like the fighting and stabbing, which I don't blame her. I absolutely never let her watch stuff where there is stabbing or anything like that, so she's never really even seen it before. I told her the only reason i'm letting you watch this is because it's a Disney movie(how bad can it be for you right?) Well she did get to see it, so she's happy now, but I don't think we'll be playing it again anytime soon. But me I loved it , I want to get my Mom to watch the kids so dh and I can go see POTC Dead Man's Chest with ds9, who of course loved it. pirate:

As everyone else has said, you have to watch it first. There is no swearing, minimal blood (a pirate is shot at the end & blood spreads across his shirt), but there is violence, and the skeletons could be scary for some. All that being said, we let DS (5 1/2) watch it on DVD. Skeletons do not scare him (um, they scared me though!). He really likes this movie & the whole pirates thing. DH is a computer geek and goes into great details on computer animation...whether it's penetrating into DS's brain is another issue.
After talking to other people, to get a heads up on the more intense scenes, of Dead Man's Chest we decided to take him. We all enjoyed the film, but DS whispers to me, "when are the skeletons coming on?" I discovered he couldn't wait to see them again!
As a side note, we have talked, numerous times, to our children that movies & TV are fake. The best example I know is to show him is that actors are on more than one show (the first example we had was Mr. Noodle's cousin, Mr Noodle on Sesame Street. He also was in Sister Act).
Good luck with your decision

We have let DS watch it with us. At his age, the attention to the movie (not being animated) is minimal. I don't think I would let him see POC 2 yet though. Davy Jones is just too creepy as are his cast mates. Best choice, as noted many times before is to watch it and make your decision based on your child. You do know them best!

I had to close MY eyes several times during the first movie (just watched the DVD last night-had seen it before but a long time ago and I couldn't remember the plot.) There's no way I'd let a 4 year old see it. My kids are 6 and 9 and they definitely won't be watching it anytime soon. The fork in the eyeball was the worst scene for me.

Depends on the individual. I myself only watch movies where people die of natural causes. :)
That being said, DD(14) has been a scary movie nut since she was about 4 years old. She likes nothing better than having the living daylights scared out of her by these movies. Her and DH sometimes rent these horrible slasher/chainsaw movies and sit up and watch them after the rest of us go to bed.
She is a lovely girl, 3.8 GPA, pleasant and not at all a lunatic. Amazingly she doesn't have emotional problems from watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre when she was 5! Now my DS(8) would have nightmares for weeks watching those types of movies, so I don't let him. He did watch part of the POTC movie, but it seemed to scare him a little, so he just left and went into his room to play instead!
