View Full Version : Are they all that uncomfortable?

We hooked the camper all up here at the house this weekend to make sure all was kosher before we took it out next weekend and the girls were so excited that we put the awning out, set the chairs out, popped popcorn, and we even slept in it last night. OK, we have the queen bed and there is NO WAY I can sleep on that mattress with my DH. He weighs a good 250 and everytime he moves it about pops me off the mattress, not to mention I can feel the springs in my back.
Are they all that uncomfortable? Is this just part of it or do they make better mattresses. We are going to get a topper to put on it for this coming weekend, but I am thinking more long term. Do you guys and gals have this same problem?
****I got up at 6 am this morning and came in the house. I told DH I had to go potty, but when I came in and saw my nice HUGE king size bed I could hear it calling my name so I got in.. He got mad and said he is not taking me camping if I am gonna sneak off to the bathouse and never come back.. :rotfl2:

Oh, that brings back memories :rotfl2: Our first camping trip in our RV was to the Smokies, and I woke up about 2 am and if there had been a bare patch of floor I'd have taken it over the bed!! Unfortunately, we had people sleeping everywhere (yes, they can sleep 7) so I was stuck. We had two nights of extreme discomfort and then we bought an aerobed to take the place of the horrible mattress. Much better, and still used now almost 7 years later!!

I never even thought of an inflatable mattress..DUH!!!!
We have everyone asking to go camping with us, and it sounds mean but I don't want all those people sleeping in there. I am a very light sleeper anyway and I don't think I can handle "NEW SLEEPERS" I am used to the noises, the snoring and such that my kids and DH make but not anyone else..I think it would be pure torture.

Yea, I know exactly what you mean, that was the first thing to go, and we went out and bought another mattress, I learnt that the hard way we were on a two week vacation at the beach....never slept good the whole time. :sad2:

We always change out the mattress for a good one. The last camper we purchased was used so when we went out for the first camping trip in it, we went to Florida for two weeks. Needless to say, after the first night we went to a mattress store and they delivered a new one that afternoon. We were hoping the one that was in it was going to work but it didn't. Plus it's always nice to have a new mattress when you purchase a used camper. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Great advice regarding changing the mattress.
As far as the tag alongs, you puchased the camper for your enjoyment, not for guests. Be polite but firm about no guests right now and after some good shakedown trips you might feel more comfortable about others joining you and your family.
Have a blast.

You may want to check the size of your TT mattress. We bought our model because it has a 60 x 80 regular size queen bed. Most TT have a smaller mattress. Ours sleeps Great! The only thing we added was a quality egg crate.

Our mattress is too comfortable.
Funny to read this thread as we were just talking about this last night. Our pop-up camper had the most uncomfortable beds but our TT is great. We were so excited when we got it as well that we had a sleepover in it already. Within 10 minutes of laying down, DH and I were fast asleep. That never happens at home...plus, we had so much room between us. We have a queen bed at home so I don't understand that and no way is the TT mattress a king. Even when the little dog lays between us, we still have room (which I'm not complaining). I still don't understand it but enjoy the space so when we roll over, we don't smack each other or bump into each other.
It is the best mattress I ever slept on. In one way this is bad. If we go to lay down for a nap, it could be a long nap. Then again, at least we know we're getting a good nights sleep.
PS - we also had the same reaction about people tagging along. They made the comment about partying in our camper. I DON'T THINK SO. They know how fussy I am anyway so they know that won't fly...I told them to go ahead and use our other pop-up. My husband told them that the camper is now a museum like our house. Walk in and look around all you want but don't dare touch (funny guy).

We have a hybrid trailer which means our mattresses fold in half when we close up the bunks. This means we are stuck with the style of mattress which was terrible for my back. We bought a memory foam topper for it which helps quite a bit!

I just bought a new mattress for the house, the store I bought it from told me that he could get the same thing in an RV size. He said it was 6" shorter than a standard. The one in our TT is actually pretty good, we added an eggcrate type foam pad to the top and "bigdaddy" sleeps like a log.. :rotfl:

thanks for all the advice. I am gonna go today and look at those memory foam toppers, egg crates, and the air mattresses. I cannot afford to buy a whole new mattress right now. My funds are spent with the purchase of the camper and a trip to WDW in a little over a week.. :teeth:

We slept in the double bed sized murphy bed in our cabin. I really missed my king sized bed too! ;)

I was going to recommend a memory foam topper too. We bought a used TT this spring and the mattress was hard and you could feel the springs. I put the topper on and I now think it's more comfortable than our bed at home.

Well our pop up had the most comfortable mattress ever. I slept like a baby on them. We bought a new hybrid trailer a few years ago and although the mattresses are much thicker, they are so uncomfortable. I got the egg crates and that helped some but what i wouldnt give to have those pop up mattresses back. Our next trailer will have the upgraded mattress.

My wife bought a feather topper at Target to go on ours. It was just a little too hard for her before, but slept fine for me.

My wife called last night from her camping trip with the kids and she is very unhappy with the beds in the new tent trailer her back is killing her and she is not wanting to use it again I just laughed at her and gave her the I told you so speach LOL. She even has a 3 inch piece of memory foam ontop of the 4 inch foam matress.
