What are the popular choices out there - are they freeware or does it cost (and if so, how much) also what would you recommend for a newbie photographer in this area?
thanks for the help!

I use Noise Ninja (http://www.picturecode.com/)
Similar results, similar prices, very easy to use.

...I got the basic home use package for about $35, downloaded. Ten minutes after clicking it into my computer, I was cheerfully cleaning up noise. It's great, and very easy.
I got it, instead of the others mentioned, because it's the only one that's Mac-compatible. :surfweb:

i am quite partial to noise ninja. as Laura points out above, Noiseware Community edition is free and works much better than the in-built routines in CS2, Elements, PSP, etc.
