View Full Version : OMG-I have become a hotel/resort snob!!

We recently returned from a wonderful stay in a 2 bedroom at OKW. It was the first time we took another family with us, using our points. We certainly ran into Disney magic, went on many rides and attractions, had good food and drinks, and had super weather (tropical storm and all). Anyhow, our flight to MCO was late afternoon on a Friday. We figured instead of using all of those points for a Friday, we would stay at All Star that first night. While our room was clean, check in was fine, I quickly realized how wonderful the DVC resorts are.
Maybe I was just really, really excited to get to OKW......or maybe I have just become a snob.... :guilty:

We often do the economy resort for the first night as well, and it is amazing how quickly we have gotten spoiled to the DVC experience. If you step back and really think about it, the All Star, or even the Pop Century, are quite a bargain and definitely worth the bargain price, but how I miss the Resort. (plus having to move after the first day; but it's a point thing)

Now that we've been in DVC for 2 years, I don't think I could even go back to a moderate, let alone a value. Our first trip was to ASmov, the second to CBR. Now the last 4 have been DVC. There is no going back. For us anyway.

Even worse we can no longer stay in the All Stars, we're paying cash with a DVC discountFri & Sat night to stay in the DVC since it's cheaper then using points and not m uch more then rack rate in a a All Star suite.

We often stay at POP the first night, as we drive down and allow an extra day in case of road problems/car trouble. We don't book at OKW that first night just in case we don't make it, we don't want to waste the points. While we like POP OK, and the food court has some very nice offerings, it is no OKW!!! But POP is comfortable for a night or two.

I think I've always been a resort snob, I just didn't know it until I stayed at DVC!
In other words I thought offsite was great until I experienced something different.
Here's to discovering your inner snob--with many happy returns :cloud9:

I am going to WDW in Dec. for a conference. I have to stay at CSR because IRS will not allow companies to reimburse employees for point usage. (could you imagine how many points and trips you could have if your company could pay you for it!!!!!!) Anyway, I almost dred not having a washer and dryer in the room and all the extra space for my to boys to run around in.

Been there.
Done that.
NOT goin' back!
We tried "stayin' cheap" a couple of times. For us, the aggravation of moving luggage alone is reason enough to spend a couple hundred (if that) let alone the difference in accommodations.
To each his/her own. It's just not for us.
I wear my "snob" badge with pride thank you very much.

There are only 2 of us and we just get studios. I'm dreading the first time we get a 1bdr. We'll probably never go back to a studio

Oh yeah, snob here too. We did values one year and hubby said for a cheap one night stay before DVC - MAYBE. He would rather do moderate. So I guess it hit both of us.

You are deffinatly not alone DVC has spoiled a lot of people. We live in PA and go to Ocean City MD and Mrytle Beach lot, The hotels used to be fine but now we have to rent a beach front condo. Going to visit my son in Boston this summer and we're having trouble finding a "nice hotel" There is a reallW nice place in the concierges collection but it's a lot of points, or $3-400. a night cash. we may just have to slum it and stay at an ordinary hotel. :guilty:

We are staying-DH has no idea, it is his Christmas present-1/1 to 1/5 and I don't want to use extra points for the 6th and the 7th so am thinking of 2 rooms at either AS or POFQ and am terrified...yes I am a resort snob, lol!

Count us in with the snobs as well. My DH now compares every hotel we stay in to OKW. He has certainly been spoiled.

Being a resort snob doesn't seem so expensive when using points, but it can hit the old pocketbook hard when going elsewhere on vacation. Count us among those who only stay in villas or condos now. It just doesn't feel like a relaxing vacation to be in a hotel room, even a really nice hotel room. We never minded until DVC.

We should start a support group. . . oh I guess that's what this board is for! This sickness has affected the whole family at our house. We made the mistake of going from 5 nights at OKW to 2 nights at POFQ because we wanted to extend our trip last summer and we didn't want to use any more points. Big Mistake! I think we would do it in reverse but never DVC to value/moderate again! My DDs were less than impressed with the pool/amenities at POFQ (even though it's really a lovely resort). And the disease goes on . . . Their future DHs have big shoes to fill! :rotfl:

I guess we're raising DVC resort snobs. 5 yo DD is used to staying in one or two bedroom DVC villas. So last October my DH had a conference at the JW Marriott at Grande Lakes and DD, 14 month old DS and I decided to come along too. We pull up to the beautiful JW Marriott and DD is very excited. After we check in, the bell hop loads our luggage and gives her a ride on the cart and shows us the amenities of the hotel. DD is loving it! They have an awesome pool, gorgeous lobby and restaurants, a kids center. He introduces us to the conceirge who helps pick out activities for DD to participate in and shows me where the spa is and what is offered etc.... We are all thinking what a great week we are in for!!!!
....Then he takes us up the elevator to our room opens the door and proudly opens the curtain to show us the beautiful view from the 19th floor and I hear DD say, "Where's the kitchen?" "Mommy, this is small, where is the other room?" We're all sleeping in this same room?" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We did manage to sweat it out in our JW Marriott (and we really did love this hotel) room, but boy did we miss the space of DVC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess we are in the same boat also. We have come to appreciate the standards set by DVC accommodations for sure. We do go into our trip early and stay at the All Stars for a couple of nights. Especially if driving. This way, it helps to not waste a night of points since we are usually tired after the ride anyway.
DW and I used to go to Fredericksburg, VA a lot for short trips. There was this really nice Holiday Inn that we used to stay at that had an indoor pool and a really good restaurant. We thought we were in high cotton staying there. The last trip there we stayed with the kids. I think Ramada had purchased it, still basically the same place. We had owned DVC for at least 1 year. At that point in time is when we became DVC snobs.

We are in the same boat. We stayed moderate twice and while it was nice, it wasn't DVC. We use all our points each year and even pay for some cash nights at a non-DVC resort--this year is for weekend nights at AKL. Gotta save on those weekend points!

Add us to the resort snob list. Our first bunch of Disney trips we stayed value and when we moved up to moderate we were in our glory. Once we joined DVC and stayed in a 1 and 2 bedroom that was it! Now if we stay at another resort our first night to save the weekend points it has to be a Deluxe resort.

Me thinks we have created a monster in our 7 yo DD. We've gone beyond DVC spoiling us for other resorts. We decided to try SSR for a night on one of our trips last year. Beautiful resort. Of course we pull into the resort and park by the Carriage House to check in, and our DD proceeds to ask why the man isn't coming to our car to take our bags....like at the Beach Club and Wilderness Lodge.

That is too funny - DVC Classifieds! :rotfl2:
Our two ds' (10 and 12) were just talking the other day about wanting to get married at WDW (we watched the food network show), and one of them said, "Well, we'll have to find a wife who understands the magic". The other one said, "I don't get it? How could anyone NOT love Disney?"

Add me to the 'snobs' list. Just returned from a short stay in Heidelberg, Germany and were 'upgraded' to an Executive room in the Holiday Inn. This room had no view and no A/C (it was 90F outside). The area itself was very pretty but I just couldn't get beyond the fact that if I had my nice DVC accommodation to return to, I'd be so much happier.
I'll continue to put my main vacation spending into DVC for the forseeable future ;)

Since joining DVC and using it, I've compared every place that I've stayed with it. DVC wins everytime.

Add me (proudly) to the list as well.
I vaguely recall spending 5 days at ASM about 9 years ago (we became DVC'ers in '98) with then 13 year old DD and 3 year old DS while my hubby was out of town for job training.
In retrospect, I'm not sure how we made it through those 5 days in such close quarters--now they even fight over space in a 2BR. I guess ignorance WAS bliss. Now we're all just spoiled :rolleyes1
My 'adopted niece' is getting married in September at WDW. Our wedding gift is the use of 100 of our points whenever they decide. Their friends are already volunteering (fighting?) to keep them company next spring when they come down to WDW again.
Not only did she find a guy who 'gets it', they both think it's the best gift idea ever. I guess we need to add them to the list too

Next month when we come to OKW we decided to come a day early and go to Tampa first. When I looked for hotels near Busch gardens I was only looking at "suite" type hotels.
Plus we're booking a DCL trip next October and I found myself looking at the categories that had "suite" like space.

...this year is for weekend nights at AKL. Gotta save on those weekend points!
Just be careful! We went from a 1BR OKW to a savannah view at AKL. As much as we loved the AKL, we sure missed our 1BR! We decided that if we add a weekend again, it'll have to be the first part of our trip. The last two nights in a GASP! "regular" hotel room were horrible!! (Even if we did have a view of the animals--although we really didn't see that many :sad2: )

We, have just became DVC owners but we have stayed in Deluxes for the last 6 visits. We had our first stay last month ,in a Studio ,at VWL and what I noticed was sooooo much better was the bed. We were so comfortable! I had not slept good at AKL or WL. I can't wait to stay. in my 2 bedroom, this Oct. I won't know what to do with all the space.

We started out "poorly..." Our first two DVC nights were in a BWV GV... Then split the extended family up into 3 1BRs. High expectations only go higher! Next trip was in a 1BR, then we stayed in a BCV 2BR. (Family of 4 plus one on the way). Can't see going back to a 1BR, and once the baby is here it'll be out of the question!

Yep, we're completely ruined. My husband and I just spent a really great weekend in Chicago and stayed in a 'Deluxe' room overlooking the Chicago River in a 4-star hotel. All we could think of was how small the room was! We love the Boardwalk!!!

When we got married, my parents decided to stay at The Hard Rock. Although they were on the concierge level our studio was much nicer. Her parents stayed at CBR, where we stayed in 04, and we never realized how small those rooms were.
More snobs raising snobs. When we went to China this winter-staying in two 5 star hotel and one 4 star hotels- our kids said they really missed DVC- even with the views of Beijing and then the Pearl River. We're staying one night at the Polynesian this fall (complete waste but I always wanted to stay there since my first trip in 1975), and they're not too thrilled about that. This coming from kids who started off with moderates.
On the plus side, they want to donate points to military families who have a parent away on deployment or who have returned home recently, so they're snobs, but generous snobs.

I too am raising snobs! It's not so much the value or moderate resorts- it's just the Disney atmosphere in general. We vacation quite frequently and whenever we have to stay in a non-Disney hotel we are always comparing the sixe, cleanliness, beds, service. Point is...
NO COMPARISON.
My 8 and 10 year olds even nit-pick when we are offsite.
Becoming DVC members in 2004 was truely the BEST thing we have EVER done. I always tell people that it was the best investment we have ever made. Being true Disney fanatics and living an hour away we vacation there ALL the time- wether it be our RV or the resorts. I love that we can use points on campsites now too!
our last trip we ended up getting a flight the night before we were planning to stay - the plane tickets were cheaper enough that staying a night at the all-stars was worth flying in early, but we weren't going to get there until after midnight anyway. I'll just say I'm glad we weren't staying in the all stars for the whole trip.

My wife said the other day that she would have no problem staying at The All-Stars again or even PC. I just laughed. She'd be ok for the first day and then miserable for the rest. She won't admit it, but she's a snob now too.

Another snob here...
We recently went to Half Moon Bay and toured the new Ritz-Carlton. We both said that BWV seemed nicer to us! Granted, we didn't go inside any of the guest rooms, but the public areas are nicer at BWV. And at $500 a night for rooms at the Ritz-Carlton, it's just not worth it.
I travel for work, and I could tell I was turning into a hotel snob when I would complain that I didn't get conditioner (what the devil is "conditioning shampoo?") and that I would only get the USA Today instead of the LA Times...

decided to add on a saturday night (airfare was half the price of sunday), & was thrilled to save the extra $'s. booked ASMu for $94 (AAA rate, & would be our 1st time at a value).
lasted all of 2 days before we cancelled ASMu, threw points to the wind, & booked the night at BWV extending our stay (studio, BW view).
i given up trying to convince ourselves that we can scrimp on resorts....

We definitely are. The only time my ds's did not complain about smaller accomodations, was on DCL.
Last year we stayed at a Fairfield Inn and my then 6 year old was sure we were not going to make it thru the night without a toaster and a microwave! He proclaimed "How are we going to live!!" :rotfl:
Last month we went to a graduation in a small town and my MIL arrived the night prior and stayed at La Quinta. We drove in early that morning and met her there. The boys hesitantly entered the small room and twisted their noses up and then the little one said "Is this Disneyworld?"
This month we were in a SSR 1 bedroom and my oldest (9) remembered our stay back in 2003 when we had a BCV ded. 2 bedroom. He told the little one, "I remember this! This is where our room is" as he tried to open the lock-off door. :rotfl: We are so cruel!!
I want to give them perspective, but Im a snob too!! LOL!! I cant even sacrifice a night to show them how well they have it.
I'll have dh take them camping! :rotfl2:

I've stayed onsite for years , 1-3 times a year . I haven't even rented a car since 1996 , I use to do town car and now use DME. I stayed at POP in Feb, first time at a value, it was ok ( I say that now knowing I might want to save points later in life :rotfl2: ) I went to front desk on second day looking to move to BWV it was more than I payed for whole trip so I stayed put. I came home on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning I called DVC to buy. I came here for about a month or so before I actually gave a deposit but it all worked out in the end :teeth:
