Just wondering if there is anyone else who despises airports and airplanes, and who drives to WDW from afar.
DW, DS12, DD7, and I will be at POP for a September trip and are driving from New Hampshire. This is the 2nd time we have made this 22 hour (or so) commute to the happiest place on Earth.
Anybody else choose the long drive over flying?

We are flying for the first time this September. I am dreading it because I have never flown before and I am terrified of planes.
We have been to WDW 6 times in the past 8 years. We have driven every one of those times from Wisconsin. A very long drive!!!!! About 20 hours if you really go at it, only stopping for gas and food. 22-24 is more realistic, but last time we drove we got stuck in a 5 hour traffic jam just outside of Atlanta!!!! UGHHH!!!! We moved a total of.....are you ready for this???........5 miles in 5 hours !!!!!!!!! Apparantly they had to completely shut down the interstate at one point because of a bad accident. Well, we had no idea how to get around it so we were stuck, in a non moving vehicle for 5 hours!!! That experience was so awful we decided to fly this time.
The only other bad thing about driving from Wisconsin is the state of Illinois......sooooo long!! It seems to go and on forever.
BTW, on all of our road trips we play license plate bingo. On one trip we saw license plates from several Canadian provinces, Alaska, and even Hawaii.....talk about far away!!!! Who brings their car with them from Hawaii?????

Well, that 5 hour traffic jam sure is good practice for waiting for some of the rides :rotfl2:
We hit a nasty traffic jam near Baltimore last time, but nothing like what you experienced. That would have killed my preference for driving too.

We leave tomorrow and have a 23 hour drive pulling a camper from Iowa. It doesn't matter...we're going to Walt Disney World! :cool1:

Well, my little 12 hour drive seems so paltry in comparison to everyone else who has responded.
However, I actually prefer driving to flying. I am ok once I am in the air, but the take off and landing absolutely terrify me.
But on the flip side, I have flown to CA twice and think that the 4 hour flight has to be a sight better than having to drive 24 hours.
I have driven to Orlando 3 times and I do love the ability to stop and smell the roses along the way, if I so choose.
Enjoy the trip.

We have to drive, my DH will not fly. It usually takes us 14-16 hours to get there from Indiana. I like to drive at night because there's less traffic, and our DD age 5 can sleep all the way there. We usually rent a car to drive down so we don't put the miles on our car. What I'm not looking forward to is driving to CA next year. :sad2: But, we've never been to DL, and I really want to go!

We had originally thought of driving, stopping along the way in each state, all the way from California but gas prices made us choose flying (also I didnt want to drive thru texas, no offense to any texans out there)

We are going to drive down from NJ for the third time in November. It will take about 17hrs.
We usually leave about 7pm the night before and arrive about noon the next day. By leaving at night we hope to avoid all traffic, which has worked the last two times.

We also leave at night - 9:00 PM. We hit the Fla border about 5:00 PM the next day and the kids have slept half the trip! We then get a motel for the night, sleep in, and finish the last 2 hours of the trip the next morning, arriving at WDW arround noon.
I get thru NYC, NJ, and D.C. overnight. No traffic!

I have been down there 3 times and the first two times we drove.
1- Oct '93---for our Honeymoon (I've been terrified of flying all my life)
2- May '01---first time bringing the boys (they were 4 & 5 at the time)
We're coming from NE Connecticut so we drove to N. Carolina and stayed overnight. Then got up and drove the rest of the way. I think my husband calculated the actual driving time (no stopping, no hotel, etc) and it was 20 hours to get there.
3rd time we went (June '05) was my first time flying. Never thought I would EVER fly since I'm absolutely TERRIFIED, but the in laws paid for the trip so I really had no choice since the other 8 people were flying. I didn't do too bad though. While the other poster said she does better once she's in the air 'cause she doesn't like take off/landing, I'd rather deal with the take off/landing than be in the air (that's the part that terrifies me)
But we're heading back down next fall and I believe I'm gonna fly again. ONLY because now that the boys are older (they'll be 10 & 12), I think being in the car with them for that long (along with DH), I might have to choke someone. :rotfl2: They can't get along in the car just going to Walmart that's 15 minutes away, I can't imagine what they'd be like for 20hrs.

We drove for the first time this MAY from texas...took us 4 hrs just to drive through Houston..never did find out what was holding up traffic... Very long 9 hr drive just to get out of TEXAS. The rest was a breeze compared to driving an inch at a time in houston. We left home at 9am and arrived the next morning at 11am. We stopped to eat to give the twins a break from the car and let them strech their legs. Their first time ever to have waffles at 3 o'clock in the morning.. I have to give my boys a big :thumbsup2 never not once complained the whole trip up there and back...(still in shock over that one)...

We live in WI too! We are planning on flying next year for our 1st trip to WDW! :cool1: The deciding factor was the our trip to Alabama last year, where we actually drove from the top of IL to the bottom. It took so long to get out of IL, I said to myself never again. Anyway a 3 hour flight just sounds better than a 20 hour drive with 4 kids. :rotfl:

Our paltry little 16-17 hour drive doesn't seem like much, now. :)
Atlanta has only burned us once, on the way home. 75 was closed on the southbound lane because of a bad accident, our side had to slow down and look. We were still 10 miles south of Atlanta for that one. Last time on the way home we hit downtown just as a Thrashers game was letting out...a little busy. On the last trip down I made the brilliant move of getting to Cincinnati at 8:30 and then Atlanta at 5:30...that was fun. :)
BTW, for anybody doing the drive south on I-75, there's a great book, "Along Interstate 75" by Dave Hunter that is just filled with information and fun stuff about I-75. It makes the drive fly by as you're looking ahead to all kinds of stuff. The exit info is great, too...tells you what's at each exit and on which side. Highly recommend this book if you're making the drive.

We leave in 22 days for our 5th driving trip to WDW. Me, DW does not like to fly! It is a very long drive from Northern Illinois. I do have to agree with another poster that Illinois seems like the longest part of the trip, we are about 25 miles from the Wis. border so we basically have the entire state to go down. Straight and boring! But don't get me wrong I love Illinois! We usually take 2 days so we do not arrive to tired. Should be an easier drive this year as all 4 of us can now help with the driving. Atlanta always makes a little nervous, seems we always hit it at hush hour. Can't hardly wait it be in WDW again! Love it Love it Love it. :yay:

We leave in the morning for our 8 hour drive, and before reading this I thought it was going to be a long trip. Now I am very grateful for our short drive! I do not fly and now when DH suggests we do I can tell him of all of you who drive 20+ hours.

we always drive down from central illinois- about 1,100 miles. We allow about 3 days to drive, starting out at about 9 a.m. and pulling over for lunch, dinner, and select shopping malls. We stop driving and spend the night at around 4 pm. Typically we stop in Tennessee, southern georgia, and Ocala FL.

We have driven the last two Falls, and will be driving again this November. It is roughly a 22 hour trek for us, but I don't fly so......
I have also argued the cost issue. To fly out of Toronto (the most expensive airport in North America) it would cost us $1750 round trip. Out of Detroit $750 for the flight, $60 for gas, $120 hotel, and $100 meals, roughly $1030.
To drive, has cost us $300 for gas, $300 for hotels, and $100 for meals ($700). Add in the fact that we have our own vehicle at Disney.
So far, the kids don't mind the drive, and I am more than happy to do all of the driving. :moped:

We drive from MA and it takes around 23 hours or so depending on how many times we get stuck in traffic. One of my little ones has some anxiety issues and I am not yet comfortable enough to put her on a plane just yet because there is no getting off for her and she would freak out completely. I wouldnt do that to her or anyone else on the plane for that matter. Also we have five kids so flying can get expensive. I would rather spend that money on staying in a deluxe because I know we couldnt afford the plane fare and deluxe accomodations. At least I don't want to part with that much money.

I can't believe we are driving in August! We live on the northern tip of Nova Scotia--about a 36 hour drive. It will take us 3-4 days each way, depending on how often we stop. We will probably not drive more than 12-13 hours per day because it would be too tiring. We have always flown before but since we are going during the summer this time, we have lots of extra time and decided to make it a real adventure! Our kids are 16 and 19, our vehicle is new, and we have iPods and a DVD player so hopefully it won't be too bad. The kids would really like to see a bit of the US so this should certainly be what they want!!

Anybody else choose the long drive over flying?
:moped: I cannot even tell you how many times I have driven to Disney from New Hampshire!! More than I can even begin to count! Once with our own children and countless times as a child with my family. We considered doing so last October, but felt we would have more time if we flew; DH only had limited time that trip and we wanted to get the most vacation time we could. :sunny:
I think there are many pros and cons to flying and/or driving! Here is my take on the deal:
If you drive: You may get a little fried with your children on a long ride, and can be a bit over tired once you reach the "world". Bt if you plan properly by leaving in the late afternoon or early evening (so they can sleep a majority of the way) and bring plenty of new and exciting snacks and entertainment, it certainly helps! I would never leave home w/o A DVD player for a long ride and new non-messy toys to bring out one by one ehwn the going gets rough! Also - Plan to make a few stops if needed for an hour or so to strectch legs and run a round and get some energy out. Plan a night out of Disney so that you can relax a day and catch up on naps and rest before jumping in with both feet at WDW. Also plan a day or two on the other end of your trip to get home before school or work start up again. Time to recoup and get unloaded and laundry caught up. This is something I ALWAYS try to do on every trip!! The car ride home is usally a lot a help getting the kids better rested from the go-go-go they had experienced at WDW. But Moms and Dads patience can be far and few between at this point as well.......
If you decide to Fly: You will get there faster and have immediate satisfaction arriving at Disney. Little kids usually always love to fly. Be sure to have gum as the whole ear popping thing can be hard on their little ears. It will cost more to fly, which can be an incentive to drive so you have more money in hand/pocket. Also plan a flight early in the day incase of any incidents or flight delays - you will still get to WDW if all goes well. Kids are generaly better behaving and fresh earlier in the day. We made the mistake once of taking teh last flight of the night so we would get more time in Florida; one delay and we had to sleep in the Atlanta airport. ((Some of you reading this may have read that horror story I posted back in April!!)) But Flying does cost more - even with the cost of fuel these days. http://www.fuelcostcalculator.com/ has a fuel cost calculator that is helpful to strategize a budget as well. We flew non-stop from Boston Logan last October and I will be flying non-stop from Logan, Manchester, NH or Portland, ME in the future to avoid any and all possibilities of spending the night on the floor of an airport again. Dear Husband said he will NEVER fly again after that, so who knows - Time will tell! We willsee who wins that battle...... :wizard:
Hope this helps - Just our 2 cents worth, but worth sharing with others! No matter what your choice is - the end esult is that you get to go to Disney on a wonderful Family Vacation that will give you lots of happy memories and soemthing your children will remember for the rest of their lives! I can still remember my first trip to the World in 1980 when I was 3 1/2! I hope my boys will have the same great memories!!! :cloud9:

We are flying in September :cool1: I haven't flown since I was 12y/o Im a little nervous but my dh is not happy about it at all. This time I just bought the tix and told him we were flying! in 2002 we drove, and get this... my parents drove their car too!!! (everyone couldnt fit in my jeep) we should have just rented a minivan!!! It was fun driving down but driving back was not fun. :sad2: This time my dad is not going because he will not fly. So I am already starting to plan our next trip this time I guess we'll be driving I dont want him to miss it again.

i have always drove down to disney, countless times with my family in the 70's & 80's, and now the past 3 years with my dh, ds, & dd. i think i only flew there 3 times, and also took the amtrak once,( i think that was harder than driving), of course flying is easier & faster but i just dont like to fly, and the price of 4 round trip tickets are just way to much.
it usually takes us about 18-20 hours depending on DC/Baltimore & JAX traffic. this year we left on a friday, (exactly 6 weeks ago, boo-hoo- i wish it was today) at 2 am to avoid DC traffic & we almost did it, only sat for about 20 min. not to bad. we usually stay in Savannah, GA. alot of hotels to choose from, (i thinks its exit 94). eat dinner, get a good night sleep. get up early, eat @ the hotels continental breakfast, (much quicker than a restuaunt) from there its about 4 hours from Disney.
the kids so far have been great. we have there dvd's and thats really all they want. we bring crayons and books. but what ever will keep them quiet and entertained. also we was an rv/camper, so we have a refigerator and bathroom on board so the only time we really stop is to get gas.
good luck

We are driving down from Connecticut. Its going to take us a couple of days to get there. We decided to stop along the way to see a few things. We will leave CT late at night and stop for the night somewhere along the way. My DH refused to fly so he is taking care of the particulars for this part of the trip...I took care of the Disney details.

I tried it once, I drove from NY to Orlando and back. I did all the driving myself. My cousin who was 14 at the time sat upfront with me to keep me company, she slept most of the way and when she was awake she kept turning my country music to rap. My mother and nephew (4 at the time) sat in the back. My mother needed to stop every hour for drink, food, potty, or shopping. My nephew spent the whole two days kicking the back of my seat. To make it worse it was Spring break and we could not find a hotel room on the way down there so I had to drive stright 26 hours. On the way home we made it to an hour before our house and I could not drive anymore I made my brother-in-law and sister come get us. Never again will I drive. but looking back it is funny now

Every year for the past 6 years we have driven from NJ. We leave about 7, sometimes 9 pm depending what time DH gets out of work, and aside from gas, the first stop is breakfast at 7 am when we reach the beginning of FL. Then from there we take our time getting to the Orlando area. The kids sleep in the car all the way down there. Last year DD who was 1 woke up quite a few times, but we go packed with a DVD player, PS 2 or X Box for DS to keep busy. We pack a bunch of things in the car for them to entertain themselves with. The only thing we don't bring is food, some drinks. We stop for dinner before we go, and the only thing left is breakfast.
DH likes it, I hate it, because I am the one that drives straight through! The rest of them sleep, but its the only way I am able to go to WDW, DH refuses to fly!

Last year for our first trip we flew. This time we will be driving the 13-14 hr trip. But last year by the time we had to deal with drive to airport, parking, lugguage, check in, security, layover, and delayed connection flight in NC we still were tied up from 9 am until 7 Pm. At least Make a wish picked up the tab. But the main reason I want to drive is for the memories. Growing up, my family and I made a yearly drive to Tampa Fl to visit my Dads mother. The drive seemed awful at the time, but by the end of the trip we would all laugh at the stupid things that happened. The misreading directions and roadsigns, the silly misunderstandings, the arguments we kids would have brought on by restlessness, and all the other silly situations. These are now some of my most cherished childhood memories. So now I get to experience the same exasperation and joy with my wife and child. Remember guy, getting there really is half the fun

We're planning on driving from California to Florida in October. This will be our 2nd trip to DW, we're mostly DL folk! Am planning on a 7 day adventure so we can stop and site-see along the way. Should prove interesting, but in my mind it's better than flying (which is a big pain these days!).

Out of our 18 trips to WDW we have driven all but about the last 4 times. We do love the drive but flying is so much faster. However, I never used to feel that way at all. I was the one who was petrified to fly. DH and very close friends talked me into flying about 2 years ago and I've flown ever since. I now love to fly. We are there in less than 2 1/2 hours and we're off and running. We still love the drive down too, I just don't know when we'll do it again. We keep saying we'll do it 1 more time after we get a new car. It takes us about 16 or 17 hours from NJ. We love the drive down, it's the drive back that really gets us.

After reading some of these post, I don't feel so bad about driving 12-13 hrs from southern Indiana near Louisville,Ky to WDW. I don't do the flying thing. I look at it like this if I can't get there by car, boat, train I don't go. I drove 2 yrs ago with DGF her DS 9 DD 8. This time it's just going to be DW (at the time) and me for our honeymoon.

My family has made approximately 13 trips to Disney World. We live in central illinois. We only flew down twice- once to spend time with my grandma in Ft. Myers (then we took greyhound bus to disney and back...never eva-eva again!) and once we flew into orlando for a mother daughter trip. The flight to Ft. Myers and back was fine but the second time we flew, going down was ok but coming back was terrifying. The pilot began "descending" violently about an hour and a half before we were due back in St. Louis. We were right by the engine on the right side and it kept cutting out... additionally, there was a group of travelling herbal-life salespeople in front of us crying that we weren't going to make it. I had a death grip on the arm rest the whole time as if it would have helped. Long story short...I HATE FLYING. So we'll continue to drive. It takes us 3 days at a leisurely pace stopping off to spend the night and eat etc.

Hey - No Problemo! ((Ooops! Spanish there... :stir: ... But thats another thread)) Anywho - That web site is a great little tool to help determine what your approximate costs could be. Still far chaper for us to drive at almost $400 round trip in our JEEP; compare to the $1200-$1600 it costed us as a family of 4 to fly. Now we have to add another baby and its only more expensive...
Also a point I forgot to mention in my PP........ Driving also gives you the chance to have your own car there at WDW. That way if you want to spend a few days off property, you don;t have to arrange other transportation or be at the mercy of a cab/bus company! :wizard:

We also drive. It takes us 19-20 hours from Texas. We have driven every time and it really is not such a bad drive. We just make the drive part of the trip. We stop in Pensacola on the way there. The kids enjoy going to the beach for the evening. On our first trip, we stopped and toured the USS Alabama in Mobile. That was really neat. We also now know what to expect along the way, so we have our stops planned out, where we like to eat, etc. On the way home, we stop over night in Jackson, MS. By breaking up the drive, it is not so hard on us. As a kid, I grew up with us driving to where ever we were going on our vacations, so that is just part of the trip.
We love the benefit of having our own car when we get there - no body else to have to rely on or wait on for getting from the airport to the resort. It is also nice to be able to climb into our own car after a day in the parks to get back to the resort.

It is so nice to see how many other people do not care to fly. I have flown about a dozen times. Each time is still as terrifying as the first time.
Well, if any of you are going in September, be sure to wave as you pass me on I-10 or I-75.

I know, I have heard the argument 100's of times;
You are 10 000x more likely to be in a car accident than a plane crash.
However, you are 1 000 000x more likely to walk away from a car crash. You do the math.
I like to say; If my car breaks down, I can walk.......if a boat sinks, I can swim/float...........I haven't quite learned how to fly.

We're from WNY and we ALWAYS drove (there were 7 of us in our family and would have cost a fortune to fly). I think it's a 22 hour drive. But I think we always made it in about 18 hours.
We would leave at like midnight or something so that us kids would sleep through the first part of the trip.

When I was a teen my folks drove us from Portland, OR in a camper, but to be honest we did see some other stuff along the way :) We've driven many times to Disneyland with our own kids, which is about 18 hrs not counting stops.

We live in WI too!
Me too!!!
When I was a kid, we drove down to WDW a couple times. It normally took us 22-24 hours. My dad was a comando driver. We would eat two meals a day and only stop for gas and potty breaks. The worst was the last time we drove. Three kids, mom and dad, luggage, straight through to Florida in a 2-door Honda Accord hatchback. (One of these (http://www.pauldesign.ru/honda/photos/about/hb_s.jpg).) I don't think I was ever as happy as I was the day my parents traded that car for a Dodge Grand Caravan. Of course, they decided to fly the next time even though we had 3 times as much room in the vehicle. But I digress...

Back in 1976, my parents and brother and I drove down to Florida from Fredericton, N.B.... Google Maps tells me this is approximately 2700km and would take 32 hours or so...
I remember it fondly, but my parents probably have a different memory.

dh refuses to fly, after being in the air force for so long...he hates to fly! We drive about 17 hrs. ds5 is use to it. I just put in a movie and he's good. His first trip I flew and he was 18 mo old. Ever since then, I've drove. His second trip he was almost 3 and we got to Daytona before he asked "ARE WE THERE YET?" Not bad!!! Even w/gas prices so high, we'll continue to drive. Last year we drove the 2 days to Yellowstone! It's not bad if you're prepared for it.

We've been down there 3 times now and we have drove all of them. It takes us from Canada about 23-25 hours straight through driving. I can't afford to fly with our family of 5. We fly we don't go. :(
Next WDW trip: Feb. or March 2007 at POR :grouphug:

We drive ~ 9 hours from NC. Getting there never seems to take as long as driving home.
We drive from Ohio. We make it a 2 day trip. I think it's something like 15-18 hours. We stop overnight in Georgia

This year will be our 4th time to drive from central Kentucky. It should take about 12 hours, but we usually stop several times. We usually stay overnight somewhere in Ga. Really don't like going through Atlanta. Two years ago on the way home we were stuck on the south side of Atlanta for 3 hours because of an accident involving cattle. We like to vary our route each time. Last year we came home through Alabama, and it was a very nice drive. My DD is usually a very good traveler, but she'll be 8 on our next trip, and probably won't sleep like she did when she was 5. It's nice to be able to stop when we see something interesting or get hungry. It is also good to have a car at WDW even though we usually don't leave the property once we arrive.
Can't wait till Oct!!!!! :)
