I have the Cannon Powershot S2 and love it so far, but have not had the chance to try it at night yet . I read that it takes pretty good night pictures but I would like to know what the best settings are to shoot spectromagic and wishes. Should I use the fireworks setting, the night setting with no flash, auto,or something else. I am not sure I will be able to manual set everything quickly without the directions in front of me. I do know that I need to practice, take lots of shots, and be still/tripod, but knowing what settings to start with for these night shots would be very helpful.

Also, for anyone who has this camera, there does not seem to be an action setting. Is auto what I would use for any moving subjects. I really don't mean to sound dumb, but the manual is 184 pages long and it is very hard to retain all that info. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

I am looking at the same camera. Can I ask what type of deal you got on the camera?

There really weren't any deals when I bought my camera a few months ago. All the stores were the same price. I think it was $499. It was slightly cheaper online at the time, but I wanted it that day. I'm sure it is offered at sale prices now, but I am not watching to see how much I may have saved.

I really think the camera takes great pictures. Everything I shot on my trip to the White Mountains came out great. I think the image stabilizer works very well. I can't wait to try it at Disney. I still would love to know about the best settings to try for Spectro, wishes, Osborne Lights etc. without having to manually set everything. Thanks.

I have this camera and really like it so far. I've only had it about 2 weeks, but it is very user friendly. As for deals, if you go to Circuit City.com and order it online you can pick it up at a store near you the next day and there's no shiping fees involved - also it's about $50 less in price than in the store! Depending on where you live the tax jumps it right back up there, but you still save a bit of money - there is also a coupon that prints out when you print your order confirmation for 15% off digital accessories at the time of pick up! I used my coupon towards a bigger memory card - saved another 15 dollars! Good luck with your purchase! :flower:

I could use a bit of advice! My daughter is a gymnast and last weekend I used this camera for the first time - on auto setting or on the indoor mode - which did a GREAT job of correcting for lighting since it was inside under floro lights! No flash! and the pics came out relatively well, good color, etc. My problem is the auto focus seems to jump around a lot when it's zoomed out, not into digital but just at the end of it's optical ability - I'm told this is normal? It jsut seems to have a hard time finding what to focus on.Also, there seemed to be a bit of lag and the pics had a lot of blur in them. I'm sure some of that was me moving, but most of the blur seems to be from the action of the gymnast. Any way to get a good still action shot with this camera? I've tried the manual focus lock with the zoom all the way out (12x) - not into the digital mode- and this seems to help some, but they still seem blurry to me! My old camera was a Pentax slr and I'm used to crisp action shots - this is taking a bit of getting used to. I also used the rapid shooting mode, which did do very well for catching more of the shot. Please help, it would be greatly appreciated! :confused3

LMarge, is it your choice to not use the flash? If it is your choice to not use the flash, you may have to try it with the flash on. Indoor sports is one of the hardest tests of a camera and especially a lens. What you are describing (the blurring) is normally a symptom of too slow a shutter speed. The camera sets the shutter speed slower to compensate for the lack of light. But when people are running this will cause a blurring of your picture. The flash will provide the light to freeze your subject. If you can't use the flash due to it being a problem for the gymnasts see if you can change the ISO setting to 400 speed. This is, I believe, the highest ISO setting your camera has. Another thing to consider is the image stabilizer function of your camera. I see your camera has three IS modes. Have you tried the "panning mode" for the action shots? This only corrects for vertical shaking only. If that doesn't work, try turning it off all together. Most of Canon's IS lenses for their slr cameras do not work on moving objects. And if used for action shots will also show alot of blurring. And the autofocus hunting around is usually due to not enough light for the autofocus to do it's job. Hope some of this helps you.

ndelaware! Thanks for the tips - you are right about the flash, I cannot use it due to distractions and hazards for the gymnast. I will try the 400 ISO setting and the change in the IS mode, didn't know I could do that - I will reread that section of the manual! ;) I had toyed with taking it back and getting one of the Canon SLR cameras, but from what you said, it sounds like that won't really solve my problem anyway - and then I really have more camera than I need! :) I did talk to other moms after the meet and they all said that they had problems with the focus on their cameras as well, so it is most likely a light issue within the gym. One other question for you, if I added on of the telephoto lenses to this camera (can't remember exactly what they call them) would that help with the focus issue or just move me closer to my subject? Thanks again for all your help! :flower:

Another thing you might try, if possible, is to set the camera focus point to only one spot. Ideally the center one. When I played around with that camera in the store, I noticed sometimes it would focus on something other than what I thought I was aiming at because it picked a different focusing sensor.

LMarge, usually a longer lense makes the issue worse. This is usually because the f/ stop of zoom lens is usually higher at full zoom unless you get an very expensive lense. The lense on your camera is is f/2.7-f/3.5 which is not too bad but even that is not cutting it for you. Putting a telephoto on it may or may or may not affect the f/ stop but the more zoom on a camera, the harder it is to the camera hold the steady. Of course that is what the IS was made to overcome. If you are zooming all the way in on your daughter not only is it harder to hold the camera steady but you are also closing down the f/ stop to f/3.7(lower f/ number = better low light performance). Which in turn will tell the camera to slow down the shutter speed which causes blurring. If turning the IS to another mode or turning it off don't help enough, try taking some pictures of her zoomed out but keeping her centered in the viewfinder. Then when you load them to your computer you can blow them up if you have a basic photo editing program. One probably came with your camera. Another suggestion that might help you is to use the eyepiece not the lcd when taking action shots. I know it's just a smaller lcd in there but it will help you steady the camera.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have started using the eyepiece instead of the lcd and it has helped a lot, just with the pics around the house of the kids playing and such. I need to look at the setting for the focus and make sure I'm not changing it somehow while I'm shooting. The advice on the extra zoom is very much appreciated! I really don't want to invest in something that I really don't need. I have taken a few shots in the wide format and they seem to be very nice when enlarged and cropped - this will probably be my main option! Thank you again! Everyone on this board is just so wonderful and helpful! One more thing, I would love to see photos you have taken with this camera, especially those from the Kingdom!! Please share after you get back!! :flower:

I've narrowed down my new camera to the Canon S2 IS or the Sony DSC H1. The reviews for the Canon are just a tad better than the Sony, so I'll prob. go that route.

I tried out both cameras at Circuit City. It's so hard to tell though how good (or bad) they really are. Each picture I took on each camera looked blurry. Is that because they are tied with the security devices there at Circuit City, so it's hard to take real pictures? Is it because the cameras really didn't have memory cards in them? (Not sure!)

My big concern with a new camera is lag time. My current camera (Kodak Easyshare) is horrible. I realize that unless I go the SLR route, I will have a bit of a delay. (I'm not that much into photography that I need to spend the extra money on a SLR.) Anyone know if the Canon S2 IS or the Sony DSC H1 is decent when it comes to lack of a delay? thx! :confused3

I had a friend who was looking into one of those 2 cameras. I normally steer everyone towards Canon, but I recommended Sony for his purposes, and he loves it.

He is a huge soccer nut, and coaches his Daughter's soccer team and his son is also in a league. His wife wanted shots of the kids playing soccer and the Sony has a "burst" mode that lets you shoot a bunch of pictures in rapid succession, which can be helpful in getting those great action shots during sporting events. If you have any interested in shooting high speed like that, the sony might be the way to go.

He has said the delay on the camera isn't noticable to him...

Has anyone shot the fireworks at WDW or the Osborne lights with the special Fireworks or Night Scenes settings on their Canon S2 yet? I was reading the manual on my new camera and delighted to find these special programs. Of course I don't have anything to practice on except the fire in our fireplace, lol, and the difference between auto and the fireworks program was amazing!

I've only ever attempted fireworks once, years ago, with my 35mm Canon EOS Elan and even following advice I got from my photo class instructer at the time was not pleased with the results so didn't even consider taking any shots of lights or fireworks.

Thanks in advance for any experiences!

took mine and got some really good shots, even took most of them in auto mode. just kept taking lots of pics. I did have the IS mode on continuous. took some with the fireworks mode on, no tripod just held really still, and got good shots there too. I will try to post a picture. I would practice for the osborn lights though. Maybe a light display at a local park or mall?

I went ahead & got it. I have always had cameras with CF, but I got an extra SD card w/512 mgs & high speed. It also plugs right into the USB port so I don't have to download from the camera or use a card reader.

Now to start using it!! :flower:

I took all the pictures here with my S2IS in November. The fireworks shots here I think I used my Night Scene because where I was I couldn't keep my hands steady enough. The ones of Spectro were with the night mode also.

I also took these with my S2 IS. The fireworks pictures here were taken with the fireworks settings. I love that camera.

You can buy rechargable AA's with a charger almost anywhere, usually much cheaper than from a camera company. Then you can buy two sets and always have backup.

I will say that I used my new S2 IS for 11 days ealier in the month at WDW, never had to swap batteries any day, and I took over 250 a day, always with LCD on, some with flash.

Not sure about the blurring, unless you are shooting very slow (maybe less than 1/15) exposure, or max telephoto. There is a limit as to what the IS can do.

If you were taking pictures of stationary people or things in full auto with the flash and they came out blurry I would be worried about the camera. Unless your subjects were moving or the flash wasn't on. The IS has to be set to the mode for moving subjects if that is what you are trying to take pictures of. I don't think you can leave it on just one setting for all pictures but I am not sure. If the flash wasn't on the shutter speed was probably too low and even the IS can only compensate so much for those conditions. Your camera is complicated, but once you get the hang of it I am sure you will be taking awesome pictures.

You either have a great camera or a great looking dog! LOL, maybe both.

Pushing the shutter half way sets the focus and the exposure. I may be wrong but I don't think your camera will take a picture until it picks a subject and focuses on it. Of course if you push the shutter half way you will be the one determining what is the subject is and if it is in focus. It is a good habit to get into when you have the time.

Have you thought about a "fanny pac" style of bag?

Completely different beast. One is a kickass point and shoot with Image Stabilizer but higher noise at 400 ISO whereas the other one is a dSLR with no image stabilizer (unless you buy Nikon's Vibration Reduction lenses that cost about the same as an S2 IS) but with phenomenal high ISO performance.

Okay, if you're looking for bang for the buck, convenience, point and shoot. The answer is S2.

If you're looking to be advance further in photography, D50. Bear in mind that even the initial investement for a VR lens, D50 body, UV filter for the lens will cost you about 80% to 100% more than an S2 IS purchase.

RadioNate

I went with the S2 IS. I liked them both but thought the D50 was just too much camera for me. I know very little about photography aside from the fact I like pictures, and I wasn't interested in taking a class. The S2 IS has enough customability that if I do choose to learn I can but is enough of a point and shoot that I don't have to.

I've been thrilled with the results so far.

The only downside for me has honestly been the the size of the camera (and the fact that you need to buy rechargable AA's seperately). I'm seriously considering buying a pocket camera (like the Sony T series cameras) for those nights on the town when I don't want to bring a bag.

Another plus for me is that I like to bring a camera to professional sporting events. Here they will not allow a camera with detachable lens therefor no SLRs. I'm able to get good shots with good zoom and not have to worry about them letting me in with my camera.

Editing to add some of my hockey photos
http://homepage.mac.com/najlundy/PhotoAlbum6.html

The DSC shots were taken with a 3 year old Sony point and shoot and the IMG files are with the S2 IS. It also important to note that I'm shooting through really beat up plexiglass and I haven't done any retouching. Last night was the 2nd game I have attempted to get some shots from so I haven't really played around with different settings much. Most are on auto or the P setting with 400 ISO. I fully admit to not really know what everything means yet so if anyone has tips for better settings let me know.

But you'll encounter high ISO noise problem with a smaller camera (which has the tendency of having even smaller image sensor).

These pictures were taken at ISO 400.

To be "comparable", your D50 SHOULD come with a Nikon lens with VR (Vibration Reduction). Therefore, if you can get a D50 with a Nikon 18-200 VR lens at the same price as (or even $200 more than) the S2 IS... go for it! You'll love the pics better.

I'm saying this because I love taking pictures at high ISO (400, 800, 1600). Now with VR (or IS) you'll get another (at least) 2-stop advantage as if you're using ISO (800, 1600 and 3200 respectively).

note: what I mentioned above is not absolutely correct, it's just a figurative explanation of what an IS/VR can do.

PS: The high ISO performance on the D50 is MUCH better than the S2 IS. Please note that this comment is from a Canon lover.

Oh I know but I can't see toting the S2 IS to the bar with me to take snapshots of my friends.

I will say another downside is I think 400 is it's highest ISO. At least on auto settings it is, I haven't played around enough to know 100%. That has been fine for my casual photography needs but you may need more.

Kelly Grannell

IIRC, S2 IS maxed out at 400 ISO. Doesn't matter, because anything higher will make the picture unuseable. Put it this way. D50's ISO1600 is about as 'bad' as S2 IS ISO400. (note: Canon Rebel XT dSLR, also yield a very clean ISO1600)

Also being able to use a clean 1600 ISO will allow you to do nightshots (almost) without a tripod. In most cases, just use the P mode, set ISO to 1600, flash on and you'll get a nice clean picture of your subject and the night lights behind the subject.

http://homepage.mac.com/najlundy/PhotoAlbum7.html

again no retouching etc.

I agree if you want a higher ISO than the D50 is the way to go.

In situations like last night I wish I would have had the D50 or RebelXT but they wouldn't let me in the arena with it anyway so it is kinda a moot point.

I had one I took on either Tv or Av that was really clean and crisp but terribly overexposed. Of course I can't remember which setting. I played with it a bit in photoshop and while better I still wasn't happy with it. I would need to fix the white balance on the camera. I need to go to a boring game so I can just play with camera settings.

I have taken an SLR into Fenway Park, TD Bank North Garden, the old Boston Garden, Giants Stadium, Sky Dome, Camden Yards at Oriole Park, Yankee Stadium and Ralph Wilson Stadium. The only stadium I wouldn't take it is Gillette Stadium because I know they have a very strict stated policy about camera's with changeable lenses. Though I do have a friend who took one in a few years ago and didn't get tossed. But did see someone get spoken to at the old Foxboro Stadium about it. He wasn't tossed but was given a warning.

At Fenway Park, Sky Dome and the Garden (new one) I took pictures in full view of the ushers and security people and they didn't say anything. At the Garden I was 10 rows behind the visitors bench and got some great shots

I guess it really depends on how much each place enforces the policy. The New England Patriots are the toughest in my neck of the woods for sure.

I know what you mean about going out with a big camera. If the convenience of getting a cheep camera that will take those few pics works, I say go for it. Congratulations!! It may take a little time to get used to it but I am sure you won't fail. Pretty soon The Coolpix will be gathering dust. Depending on which jpeg setting you set the camera to to you should be able to get at least 300 pictures on a 1 GIG card. Unless you set the camera to RAW which should cut that in half. The RAW setting is for those who want to do all their post processing on their computer instead of having the camera do it for them. Good luck with it!

I have done it i have bought the D50 i saved about $240 on the listed price so i am feeling pretty excited now. Just waiting for the batteries to charge up to get started. I have got the 1GB memory card how many photos do you think i will get out of it. Thanks again for all your input. We have still got our nikon coolpix to fall back on if i fail LOL

It depends on your settings. In RAW mode you'll get about 140, in JPG Fine you'll get about 290 and in JPG Normal you'll about 570. I wouldn't use anything lower than JPG Normal.

If you plan on doing a lot of croping or enlarging then use at least the JPG Fine.

I'm only 2 weeks with my D50 and am loving it. Then again I've been a Nikon SLR user for 15+ years. Luckily my older telephoto zoom lens works great with the D50.

I guess it really depends on how much each place enforces the policy. The New England Patriots are the toughest in my neck of the woods for sure.

The SBC/AT&T CENTER is usually pretty strict. Of course they didn't check my camera bag last night but then again I'm pretty well known in the arena because my DH works for the hockey team that shares the arena. Since we always enter/exit through the same door we always see the same bag checkers/ushers.

I've seen people get away with it and I've seen people be turned away at the door. I'm actually quite sure that I could have gotten away with it but I already get enough special treatment.

Last night was the 1st time that I've taken the S2 IS in and I was happy with the results. All I really want is a few good shots to scrapbook. I'm not looking to be a sports photographer.

With a 1 Gig card on the D50, you will get 284 with jpeg fine mode. In RAW, which is what I use, the max is 135. I wouldn't even bother with anything set lower han these two settings unless it is website or email work.

Also at higher ISO, you'll get fewer pics (high ISO means higher noise, means more data needs to be compressed, means larger file size hence the fewer pics per card).

Do I sound convoluted enough? :D

I am learning the ins and outs of this camera. One question though...how do I take pics of DD skating show? It is a no-flash event with a lot of movement. What settings do I use? Is there any "scenes" to set on?

RadioNate

I've been taking some hockey photos and I use the P setting at 400 ISO. I've been leaving the exp setting at 0 and the auto white balance on but Friday I'm going to try to change the white balance to florecent and the exp to -2. I should know right away if that'll work.

I get some good clear shots using the TV mode at 400 ISO but the photos are often really washed out so I'm going to try switching the white balance on that setting too and seeing if it helps.

Of course I could be doing things totally wrong as I really don't have a clue what I'm talking about but I've gotten some decent shots. They won't win any sports photography awards but they are good for what I want them for.

Oh, I also use the continuous shooting mode and just hold the button down and take a zillion pics in a row.

or somewhere else?

I bought my S1 IS from Buydig and was completely satisfied. They do not try any of the bait and switch games. They did not even call me to try to get me to buy anything else like most of the online camera places do. It even arrived two days early. I would buy there again. I do not believe that they offer an extended warranty. If you are purchasing with a Visa platinum, you might get an automatic extended one year warranty. We use the Disney CC and it has one. Some debit cards come with this also. I would call and check with your card company for details first.

I have also heard nice things about Butterfly. I believe that Beach Camera is the same company as Buydig, but they sometimes have a little different prices. You might want to check them out. Any authorized Canon dealer should be trustworthy. I believe that you can check with Canon to see if someone is one.

Hi all,

Bear with me. I want to get more involved with my photography and be able to take better pictures so I am looking at the Canon S1 and 2. My question is... if I don't plan to print pictures larger than 5x7's (maybe the occasional 8x10), would I be ok with the S1 being only 3 mp vs the S2's 6 mp? I've found some really good prices on the S1 right now. I know it's the older model, but besides the mp difference, is there anything else? I don't want to get a camera I won't be able to do the things I want (fireworks, nighttime, zoomed shots, action, etc, but I don't intend to be a professional.

Thank you!

Kelly Grannell
02-02-2006, 10:34 AM
I personally find that 3 MP is the absolute lowest res to print. This way, I can't crop any further because I will start losing resolution. That was the reason for me not buying the S1. I still don't buy the S2 but that's because when the S2 was introduced, I already have an A95 and 300D.

LordAthens
02-02-2006, 04:31 PM
An 8x10 will almost guaranteed be grainy on a 3mp. 5x7 and 4x6 will be fine.

I do partially agree with Kelly's comment about being able to crop. However, I find that folks like myself and Kelly really over-think what most people end up doing with their camera. I find that most people won't take the time to crop, edit, etc their pics but rather, throw their memory card into the photo Kiosk at Ritz \ Walmart \ Costco, etc making cropability (is that a word? ;) ) a non-issue.

For everyone of my family members that I have given a new digital cam to as a gift (Mom, Dad, Grandma & Grandpa, older brother, etc), I can tell you not a single one has ever digitally manipulated a file. They print them at a photo kiosk and then download the images at home to store as their originals.

The price on the S1 right now is VERY hard to beat, by anything in that same class of camera.

My S2 should be here tomorrow! Yeah! I can not wait to play with it this weekend.

Better yet, I found that I had to amend my income tax return for some interest paid that I had forgotten about, and what they owe me over and above my return I should be getting tomorrow more than pays for the S2 package I purchased. Now I can stop feeling guilty:guilty: (well just a little!)

I love to play with the pictures (you pros call it manipulate LOL!!!) on the computer. I've been trying to figure out PhotoImpact 11 tonight and not getting very far!

Hi everyone,

Hope you can give me some advice. My parents told me they'd split the cost of a new digital camera for me for my birthday, so I've been doing a lot of research (my birthday's next week). I have the Rebel EOS in film now, and am looking at upgrading to digital, because I have the lenses and everything already.

I've heard a lot of good things about the S2 IS though, and it is cheaper. However, the Rebel is cheap enough that cost doesn't matter that much. I just want a really solid camera that will last a long time, so that's why I was looking at the 350 D.

Photo background - I've taken a few courses in HS and College and won't end up doing this for a profession, but I just like doing it often for fun. Plus, I'm going to Hawaii for spring break and I can't wait to take some awesome pictures! So which do you feel is better?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

Kelly Grannell
02-09-2006, 06:26 AM
Depends on your need. I need high ISO, I need zero shutter lag. If that's the case, dSLR is the only way to go. If IS is a concern, don't worry, S2IS Image Stabilization is about 2-stop advantage. Just set your RebelXT to ISO400 for moderately bright scenes and ISO1600 for indoor/dark scenes.

Oh, and the dSLR instantaneous power-on feature is also a big plus.

So, for me, although I love S2IS, now that I already have my dSLR, I won't even bother with S2IS anymore.

You want to go crazy? get dSLR with a kit lens for now and wait for another month and (supposedly) an 18-200 IS lens will be released too (by Canon)

Razor Roman
02-09-2006, 06:38 AM
If you have lenses, you can get the Digital Rebel body only and save about $100 off the price, too.

I'd go with the dSLR. I have the original Digital Rebel and I love it.

Also, obsiouly if you have multiple lenses you already get that benefit at 0 cost.

The S2IS is a nice camera, but you will get better photos from the Rebel XT (less noise, etc)

handicap18
02-09-2006, 02:14 PM
If you've already got the SLR camera then go with the dSLR. When I went digital 4 years ago the dSLR's were out of control price wise. They've finally come down to my budget and I'm the happy owner of a Nikon D50 (having been a previous 15 year Nikon owner). If you didn't already have the SLR then the S2 IS might make a better choice.

Just my $0.02.

I love my Digital Rebel. I've had it for two years now (maybe time to move up to EOS1d .... my DW would shoot me though) and it works great. I bought it because I have an EOS1 film camera with lenses that fit.

Get the Rebel.

A week ago I couldn't decide between the Canon and the Panasonic Z5, and went ahead and ordered the Panasonic from Amazon after DH decided for me. Well, after originally giving me a shipping date of 2/22, they changed it to 3/9!

I have no patience whatsoever, so I went ahead and paid the extra $30 for the Canon. :rotfl2: It'll arrive tomorrow.

(I really wanted that one a little more anyway, so I'm glad it worked out that way.)

I plan on ignoring the thread about the new Canon S3. According to DH, it's always better to wait and get the new technology. Agree or disagree? I think I'll be happy with what the S2 has to offer without getting the newer one, don't you?

This photo was taken about 1/2 hour outside of the Las Vegas strip in Red Rocks Basin. It was the first real outing for my S2 IS. The photos were auto color corrected on Photoshop Elements 2.0 (thanks for the heads up, Dan!!) and it is my first attempt at taking a series of photos with Photostitching in mind; I took 4 photo. I've even impressed myself! :goodvibes

I like the looks and feel of this camera, love the thought of 12x zoom, and I do have camera shake. I also love the pics that i see on here taken with the Canon S2 IS.
I know that if i bought it I would only use it as a point & shoot. I'm camera illiterate (sp) when it comes to all of the settings & doubt if i would ever learn to use it for more than a P & S.

Sure that is one of the better point and shoot cameras around. I used to be a big fan of the G series(G6 rocked), but this is about as good as it gets now.

And it is a point a shoot camera.

That's pretty much where I still am with the S2, although I do hope to learn more. I have not had a chance to really get out and play with all the settings, but I sure am happy with the pics that I am taking, I love the feel of the camera, and the 12x zoom.... gotta love it!

I really like my S2IS, I use to have the big Nikon Dslr camera with all the lens and flashes but it just got to big and heavy to carry around the parks. Here is some of the pictures I took today at Busch Gardens with my S2IS.

It's a great camera - especially for outdoor use - the colors just pop with this camera - If you are planning on a lot of indoor use, take the time to read the manual so you can adjust your light settings - otherwise they may come out a bit on the goldend or dark side. I've had mine since November and just love it - lots of bells and whistles to play with if you're in the mood!! :)

How does this camera handle action shots? Our current digital is really slow on the draw, so pictures of the kids playing hockey usually come out blurry and with the kid pretty much out of the frame by the time the shot actually goes off!

Shutter lag is a common thing with point and shoot camera and can not be avoided. I don't know whether S2 IS or S3 IS have solved that problem to any degree.

I keep changing my mind!! I know the 3 is 6 megapixels...so will it be worth the wait for one more mega pixel? I think I've realized that one of these cameras is the one I want!!! Now to wait or get the S2....

Yes, 1 extra megapixel. But you will also be paying about $150 for that extra megapixel.

The S2 is available for about $350, when the S3 comes out it will be $499.

Greg K.
03-12-2006, 01:32 PM
The S3 will be able to shoot iso 800.

I'd wait and see what sort of reviews the S3 gets -- and wait for the price to drop. $499 is the basic street price (and the price listed on the Canon website). I'll wager it will be considerably cheaper -- closer to $400 -- online at places like buydig.

Of course, the price of the S2 will also take a plunge once the S3 is released...and you may be able to get a deal for closer to $300 (or less?) by early June.

I'd wait and see, myself. :confused3

Unless you're in a hurry and can't wait another eight weeks or so... :hyper:

the S2IS doesn't have as much lag time as some of the others out there - it's not perfect like an SLF, but my daughter does gymnastics and I've been able to catch some really cool in the air shots of her during her floor routine and I actually was able to get a great shot of her jump on the beam at her last meet - I use the AV mode and set the ISO at 400, then play around with the light selection to get rid of the blue tones from the halogen bulbs - there is a rapid shoot button on the top right of the camera - very close to the shutter button - it has two speeds of rapid shooting - I've been able to shoot with the faster mode and get pics that look like a movie when you view them in succession - hope this helps! The only down side is the rapid fire does not work with the flash - so you've got to set your parameters for no flash shooting. (can't use it anyway at a meet, so it doens't matter to me!)

I will take that wager.

The MSRP of the S2 was/is $420 and it now sells for about $350(clearance priced at the end of its life cycle), It Sold for closer to $390 through the holidays, it did take a price drop recently when word of the S3 started to surface.
The S3 MSRP is announced @$499, I doubt it will take as big a price cut as the S2 clearance prices.

Also I would not count on ISO 800 being very usable on the S3, but tests shots should be coming soon.

Thanks for the info - that's a big help to know as lighting at gymnastic meets isn't usually the greatest. You can buy other lenses and a flash unit for the S2 IS, right? Does it have a setting so you can leave the shutter open (like with a shutter release) for shots where you WANT to blur the action?

Kelly Grannell
03-12-2006, 04:35 PM
Yes, there is a "Tv" mode (Shutter Priority) and set it to a lower speed like 1/30 sec and you'll get motion blur (ideally you're on the 1/250 shutter speed range if you want to stop the action).

I'm not sure on the blur issue - haven't looked into - Kelly says the Tv mode lets you do that - would have to play around to see - I've been to focused on stopping the motion to check into much else!!! In the manual they give an example of headlights that look like they wrap around the car as it's moving - very cool, but haven't experimented with that yet. As for the other lenses and flash - there is no hot seat for external flash - there is a flash adjustment on the camera in the function mode so that you can adjust the strength of your flash - and honestly I have not looked into an external option - it may be there and I just don't know about it - there are no lenses per se, however there are telephoto and wide angle "converters" - they attach over the lens itself but the lense does not remove from the camera. I've looked into these online, but have never actually put my hands on them - would love to check out the tele one - especially since I shot a lot of stuff from a distance (meets, etc). If you check Steve's digicam site there may be more info - I'm not sure of the actual weblink for that site - anyone know? Good luck! :)

Daisy - great shot - that camera does great outdoors - look how crisp and green your grass is - what's that like --- green grass that is!!! :goodvibes - here in Ohio it's still brown and wet! For me the real test is when I put the shot on the computer and start zooming in - how good is the resolution and how clear does it stay - I love a shot where the eyelash detail is awesome! A profession photographer I worked with once showed me how to loop negatives and the thing he used as his judge was always the eyes - he said if your eyes are in focus everything else will fall into place!! It's been good advice so far! Enjoy playing with your new toy!! I'm a tad jealous - as I picked mine up in November and paid $450 for it!! (not that it hasn't been worth it!!!) ;)

Ok, so this will be my plan of attack in May when I go to WDW with my new Canon S2 IS. I will NOT have a tripod, so in order to get pics of the fireworks and the rest of the "night scenery", this is my plan:

Use Program AE mode (I'm chicken)
Set ISO to 400 (highest this camera will let me set it)
Hold it as still as I can
Use 2 sec self timer mode so I don't have to push the button
Use no flash (right?)

Do you think this will produce "acceptable" pictures????? Thanks a bunch!

03-26-2006, 07:43 PM
If there was a way to take a mini tripod in a backpack, that would help, I think, too. Or maybe finding something to sit it down on, like the top of a trash, and using it to keep it steady. Not sure if this method would work as well since most shots will probably be higher that where the camera would be pointing, but maybe there would be somthing around you could use.....the flat head of a friend or family member perhaps?? LOL j/k

Here is a picture to maybe give you some help. And I must say, I am still learning too, LOL. This is not sized down at all, I just uploaded to post here. It is VERY big. And I am very open to suggestions for improvement.

The main settings were:

shutter speed 1.6 seconds
f/8

Kelly Grannell
03-26-2006, 09:03 PM
Tripod for anything slower than 1/8 second is a must. You'll need SLOWER shutter speed for fireworks to show the bloom or the willow-y effect. Therefore you'll need at least 1 second shutter speed. Since you're going to use tripod anyway (it's a must), then you might as well use ISO 100. Set it to landscape. Or set you camera to fireworks mode if available.

Do you also have the Canon S2 IS camera? I thought your pictures were good. So you didn't use the fireworks setting for the fireworks then? Just the night scene mode? Maybe I will try that, then instead of programming it myself. I most definitely will not have a tripod. Thanks!

Night scene mode still activates the flash, which is essentially pointless in fireworks situation. Use Fireworks or landscape setting (with flash being forced to OFF, if you're using landscape mode)

Yes, I used my S2 IS for these. I have used my fireworks setting and it's great, but not without a tripod or something to balance on. I took a few with it and decided the Night Scene pictures were coming out better. Just shut the flash off. HTH

Sorry I'm not really sure. You can use a 1G card though. And actually it's better to have multiple cards...if the card somehow gets corrupted then you lose all your pictures. I like to have several 516mb cards, or you could get several 1G cards...

T. Lynn

Yes, keep extra cards. We were in Florida and I got a new 512mb card for my Pentax. Needless to say that it somehow got corrupted and I couldn't take any more pictures. I didn't loose what I had but still couldn't take anymore. I had to buy a disposable one at Animal Kingdom. You can imagine that cost.

I now use that 512 card to store my computer files on. I tried fixing it but it will only take so many pictures and then I get an error message.

I have an S1 and it works with a 2GB CF card, so it should. I would imagine that Canon would never downgrade the capacity on an upgraded camera. I think I read that a 4GB card will work in mine also, but that was more than I wanted to spend.

Having multiple cards is a good idea, but I can completely understand wanting a 2GB card if you shoot video. That is only about 18 mins. I keep my 2GB in the camera so I have quick access to video if needed. I then carry two smaller cards as backups. I always backup to disk every day while at WDW.

Hey all,

I'm considering buying this camera, everything I have read sounds like it's an awesome camera. Espically for the price range!

I would like to see some shots taken with this camera.

Specifically:

1. Night time shot with tripod
2. Night time shot without tripod
3. A shot, day or night, at full 12x optical zoom
4. A shot, day or night, with no zoom

for the nighttime shots, something I'd really like to see is Spectomagic. We came back from our trip in feb, took about 150 pics with my cheap kodak digi camera, and every single one turned out blury. In fact, of all nighttime shots I took around the parks/DTD/Pop century, only 3 of them turned out even close to being decent, they still were blury, but not too bad.

The camera I have now takes decent day shots, but doesn't take night shots very well at all no matter what settings I used.

Thanks in advance! :)

I have had the camera for about two months now, and am pretty much a novice at anything other than point and shoot - so I have not done much of anything but AUTO. I have not had the opportunity to shoot fireworks or Spectromagic - I hope to this upcoming weekend, but until it happens, I never count on it!!! I really haven't taken any nighttime photos at Disney with the camera

I have two pics, that I used zoom on - not sure if it was full, but the first photo is of the 50th Anniversary "thing" on the castle taken from the flag pole on Main Street.

also, a quick question, for night shots of the parade... is it better to use the flash, or not? I assume not, but i dunno...

I do not because it seems to show too much detail. You see all of the mesh and structure of the floats with a flash and the lights look dim if you are close. If you are farther away, the flash is not enough and it gets underexposed. Try to practice on something similar before your trip to get the desired results from your camera.

I have had the best results from my S1 in manual mode and I am sure that the IS had something to do with that.

Hi,

I just returned from my big trip and I"m in the process of uploading photos I took with my S2 IS. Check out my member gallery (VRodKen). The only changes I've made are cropping related (except the one palm tree pic, had a little digital fun with that). Sorry, no tripod. But with the IS, I hardly ever needed it!

http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/data/500/110634Small_20060329_0133.jpg

My only 2 complaints:

1) For some reason, I found it hard to keep my horizon level. Could be old age.

2) At full wide angle (without adapter), I got distortion on straight lines near the edges of my photos. Pincushion effect.

Buy a FAST card. I recommend the 1GB Sandisk Ultra II. You can find it under $100 at Best Buy. (The S2 uses the SD Cards.)

I LOVE this camera and would recommend it to anyone.

Yes, this is the problem with any zoom lens, especially superzooms. Even on my boss' 24-105 f/4L IS lens (4.375x zoom) pincushion and barrel effects can clearly be seen.

I am not 100% certain but i think you can yes.

Here is a website with a very detailed review of the camera.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042201canons2is.asp

Also here is a image of the camera fitted with an external extension lens. To attach these lenses you usually need a filter thread to attach a ring to attach the lens.

I hope this has helped.

Ok, I just bought the A610 last month but I can't stop thinking about the S2 because of the IS and 12x zoom and after seeing this post I think I've given in...it's time for my Kodak with the 10x zoom and no IS to take a hike!! Anyway, I entered the first one and applied it and the discount of $79.80 was deducted. Now do I go back into that same coupon field and enter the $35 off coupon? That's what I'm doing but it won't apply the discount...help!!

From your research can you tell me what is new about the S3 IS?

ETA: Are the codes still good to use? I think there's a 6 between the L and V which will work yet the $35 off code doesn't work? Help?!?!? :teeth: Thanks!

Kelly Grannell

The main thing is ISO800 capability, cleaner hgh-ISO noise (supposedly, at least from the demo I've seen, S3 ISO800 is cleaner than S2 ISO400)

The secondary (but important to me), the colour is in gun metal rather than silver.

However, at $284 shipped? Just buy it!

I've been trying to get the S2 for the last few days since seeing the 20% off and $35 codes floating around. It looks like the $35 codes are unique and can only be used once. Thanks to a kind DIS member from the budget board I just got a $35 code PM'd to me a few minutes ago. The only thing that kind of stinks is that Dell is showing a 3-5 week delivery now and I was hoping to get it before we leave on the 29th. Oh well, I'll have my A610 that I bought last month but I really wanted that 12x zoom for the parks. :(

I got the codes from flamingoworld.com
I think there is a limit to the # of times the code can be used.. I remember seeing disclosures like good for 1000 uses....

A similar deal posted the other day didn't work for me either, I saw these today & figured I'd give it a try.. sure enough it worked... Hope you find a combination that works for you!

Did you get charged sales tax? I had it in my shopping cart, went through the whole process of setting up an account, entered my cc info and then I noticed the total was $300 with tax added so I canceled out of it. It doesn't seem like such a good deal now that it's $300 and knowing I have to wait 3-5 weeks for the camera. I'm guessing in the next month or so the other online websites are likely to continue to come down on their pricing - Amazon currently has it at $339, no tax, free shipping and it ships in 2-3 days. If I decide to pass on it for now I'll definitely give the coupon code to someone else here on the Disboards who wants it.

i am about to get the s2 after reading up on some reviews and here. i would like to know where the cheapest place is in canada to order it. also is it worth to wait for the s3 and pay the extra money.

tks a bunch

also in about 1 week ill be asking you guys about video cameras sony or canon :confused3 :stir:

Kelly Grannell
04-13-2006, 11:26 PM
The cheapest so far in Canada is about CAD$550 plus taxes for the S2 IS. If you order it from the US, including shipping and duties, you'll be paying only about CAD$500 total (as opposed to CAD$635)

Canon vs Sony camcorder? I hate Sony but they still make the best camcorder on the market (for consumer level).

Is the Canon S2 IS too heavy to carry around the parks all day. I'm new to all this so please bear with me. I've only had one digital camera and am looking to get a new one....I want one with a higher zoom. I hear wonderful things about the Canon S2 IS on here. I'm also looking at the Kodak Easy Share Z740 because it seems more "user friendly" for someone not overly technical and it seems lighter too. I also need a good camera for my job as I'm a real estate agent. Any advice....I would like to not go over $400. Thanks...I appreciate it.

I carry my S2-IS with me all day every time I am in a park (we average 1 day week, and lately much more!). It has become an appendage! I pretty much wear it around my neck at all times.

In fact it is really never far from my side when I am at home (we have dogs, cats and 3 week old kittens so there is always something to photograph).

Prior to this camera I had a smaller Digital and liked the fact that I could put it in a pocket, and I was kind of concerned about the larger camera, but I have gotten used to it. I don't really notice it to be heavy, just "bulkier" than my previous.

I left it at home one day last week when we had guests visitng and we were going to SW - and I felt like I was missing an vital body part! Luckily I did have my video camera and my DSis had her camera, so the trip was not a total loss!

I LOVE my S2. It's not too heavy and it takes great pix. To see some sample photos, look at *my Disney gallery* (http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/showgallery.php?ppuser=110634&cat=500).

That said, I'm a photographer and know how to use it. My wife likes simple cameras, and she isn't as thrilled about this camera. If you're willing to put a few minutes into learning how it works, it will be great for you. If you want a point and click, my personal suggestion is to find something else.

My 2 cents.

i was playing around with one in the store and i was shocked how much lighter than my slr it is...although they claim it weighs about a lb in some lit. i have seen( weight of slr/lens cause me to leave it in the room more often than not) amazon has a fairly cheap case with a shoulder strap also.

elasticgirlfan...you sound just like me..iwas deciding between those and panasonic lumix dmcfz7 but think i'm going with the canon...if you haven't seen them, http://www.steves-digicams.com has detailed reviews for them. the other 2 seemed heavier / clumsier to me and someone here made (imo) a good point that they'll have more shake if they don't feel good in your hands

If you own a S2 IS, where did you buy it? I'm looking for a reputable place! Unfortunately, I'm a worry wart, since I've had 2 other digicams crash on me before, and I had to return them. So, I would like to find a decent place, in case that were to happen again!

If you own a S2 IS, where did you buy it?

I found the Digital Megastore (http://www.digitalmegastore.com/) online and they had fantastic reviews. I called them and got great service. They did make an error on the memory card, but offered to send me the right card even if it cost more than the one they billed me for! They were all about taking ownership of the problem and making it right.

So far I'm a big fan...

Good luck,

I use these Monster Powercells: Ultra-High Capacity 2100 mAh AA Rechargeable Powercells™

They last longer than the other two types of rechargeable batteries that I have.

I don't really know what the expectation of battery life should be - I always make sure I have extra extra sets when I am at the parks, but I used the Monster batteries all day at EPCOT on Friday approx 200 photos, and I think I changed them after a few additional photos at MK on Saturday.

Oh, great! I'd been deliberating between getting this one and the Nikon Coolpix P4 and finally decided on the Nikon. The Canon, especially at this price, is once again very tempting. Thanks for the heads-up, wscato.

Any thoughts from you more experienced types? My current camera (Fuji Finepix A210) has 3.2 mp, 3x zoom. I'm looking for something with more megapixels, and vibration reduction is a must. I'm not too particular about the zoom capability.

Hi all ~

I am planning to order one of these cameras (I did see from another thread that the S3 IS was just released but I think I'm going to get this one.).

My company lets employees purchase items from Dell through the corporate account and then the company is reimbursed through the employees' payroll deduction for 3 months. An order is going to be placed next Friday so I have some time to think about it.

From other threads I've read it seems like this is a well-liked camera. True? If I do order this camera are there other accessories I should order? Like a battery charger, extra memory cards? Any other comments about this camera?

TIA!

I have had the camera now for 3 months and I absolutely love it. I love the feel of it, the zoom, and the features (although I'm still trying to figure out all the manual stuff - with the help of my friends here on this board!)

My previous camera was a compact point and shoot, and I was happy with the photos it took, but this is so much fun.

You would probably want to purchase a battery charge and an extra set of rechargeable batteries. Also, extra memory (SD cards).

I also got a lens adapter - it's a tube that screws on to the camera body onto which you can screw a filter, this will help protect the camera lens, as well as help in some lighting conditions...... can you tell I am not real technical about all this stuff.

If you click on My Photos below, the majority since February have been taken with the new camera......

I am happy with my purchase, it was very much an impulse buy, from the reviews I read on this board, and I do not regret it in the least!

Thanks! I'm excited about ordering it. I have a cheapy no-name digital camera that doesn't work well. It hates bright sunshine and dark settings. The only time it works half way decent is inside with the flash.

Read up here on batteries, chargers. I have the LaCrosse BC-900, it is great. Also, you want nickel metal hydride batteries.

Do check pricing, this is a good site.........

So which mode do we use now? The S1 IS has the sports mode but the S2 does not. I tried to take pics of my sons gym show the other night (indoors), and most of them came out blurry. He was jumproping and hula-hooping, etc.............First I used auto mode, then I used night mode (since the low light), but I think I should have switched it to scene mode and picked "indoors", right? I didn't realize it had that until I looked at all of the scene modes after the fact. Anyone know the difference between "night scene" (one of the choices on the diopter) or "night snapshot" which is one of the choices after you choose "scene" from the diopter? And if I don't have a tripod, I shouldn't use fireworks mode, right? Just use night scene and no flash? Sorry for all of the questions.........my main question is what setting for sports shots/moving targets? Thanks a million!! We leave in 2 days!

Kelly Grannell
05-04-2006, 02:33 PM
taking gym pictures, sports mode or not, if your shutter is not at least 1/600-ish you won't get a clear picture. With point and shoot, this is impossible. Sports mode or no sports mode.

The best thing you can do is set the ISO to 400 and set Tv (shutter priority) to 1/600 (if the camera allows you to do so, or choose the closest thing to that) and then adjust the levels using photoshop later on,

Night scene: best to use tripod, it uses ISO 100 (or is it 80?), with flash and slow shutter speed.

Night snapshot: you don't really need to use tripod, it uses ISO 400, with flash and 1/60 shutter speed. The background quality will look better using Night Scene of course, but if you don't have a tripod, Night Snapshot is the only way to go.

Fireworks: no tripod = no fireworks picture. Unless you're okay with little bloom from the fireworks instead of the weeping willow bloom-like picture. Set camera to Tv 1/15 second (or about 1/6 second if your hands can be that steady), focus to the castle, zoom OUT as much as possible, set ISO to 100... and do the Hail Mary.

We havent found a need for any accesories for our S2 IS. We love it just like it is. We do use rechargable batteries in it. But I think 3 sets is over kill, especially if you have a quick charger. I just used it for 3 days at Disneyland. I had 215 pics when I got home. That doesnt include the 20+ that I deleted at the time I took them because they were bad (people walking in front of the subject as I snapped, etc). I used the same set of batteries the entire time. They were still going strong at the end of the trip.

sorry if this has been asked but i can't find it in the search...

the largest card i can find on the canon site is 512 .and that holds 190+ pics( superfine and largest) so would a 2 gb hold 4 times that? or around 760? didn't know if the ratio held true for larger cards. ( i guess a gb is 1000 mb???)

mhutchinson
05-10-2006, 07:38 PM
Yes a GB is 1000 MB and the photos per card math is kind of fuzzy. It assumes a higher than average file size than is typically stored. Canon use to OEM SanDisk as their cards now I think the ones the sell are by Simple Tech.

And my guess is that if you bought it from Canon directly it would be about the price of a 1GB - 2GB (PRO speed) card somewhere else...
