I thought it might be fun to share some old Magic Kingdom photos from years gone by, however, I just relized I have to scan them. So please start sharing your old photos, and I'll have mine on soon.
5/26/07 - ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THREAD! - Thanks to all who have shared their pictures and memories in this thread. The thread now represents over a year of members pictures and stories from WDW!
10/1/08 - Great Stuff!!!!.....What a great thread!!!.......I just updated a photo of the kids from this years vacation...and yes we did not go to Disney World this year.... and I miss it! We went to Myrtle Beach and Gatlinburg. We did 10 days at DW in 05, 06, and 07 and decided to let DW rest for a year to appreciate it more. Well, we will be back in 09! We stayed at FW Cabins ( with a golf cart/ the only way to go), and we will probably do the same again> I've noticed by the price that everyone else is catching the cabin fever as well.
1/8/10 - Thank you all who have been contributing pictures!! HERE'S A GREAT IDEA TO QUICKLY ADD OLD PHOTOS - TODAY'S NEW DIGITAL CAMERAS ARE SO GOOD THAT YOU CAN LITERALLY TAKE A GOOD QUALITY PICTURE OF AN OLD PICTURE. THIS SURE BEATS TRYING TO TAKE THE TIME TO SCAN OLD PHOTOS AND REMOVE THEM FROM ALBUMS. SO THE NEXT TIME YOUR AT MOM OR GRANDMA'S GET THE DISNEY PHOTO ALBUMS OUT AND POST, POST POST........POST!!!!!

I have pictures from 1972, Mickey Mouse Review and others. But I don't know how to post them. I'm not the best at the computer. :confused3 I'm going to see if my son, who is just graduating college this Thursday will help me. I would love to see everyone's pictures.

nbtstatic.. LOVE your photos!! I couldn't imagine walking in those red shoes though.
That Captain Hook is hysterical.
I'm another who liked the pink castle. I thought it was so adorable.
My dad is going with us next year. He was looking forward to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Then we told him it was no longer there. He hasn't been to Magic Kingdom in 20 years.
I'm going to have to see if I can find my photos from the early 80s. I had a swell 110 film camera. My sister had a disc camera.

Love that old-fashioned stroller! The back reclined and the grill underneath pulled forward to make a bed a 4 yr old coulda slept in! How 'bout the paper shopping bag? Even though it's Sept most everyone's wearing long pants. It was unusually cool that weekend. Ahhh!

I have 26 photos from when I was a kid in Disney World on my website.
You can see them HERE (http://cassworld.ca/photos.htm) It is the very last slideshow
I just recently found slides from my first trip in 1975, I will scan them and post them later today.
I also found slides purchased by my parents from the 70's which had official photos from around the world on them. I will try to scan them in the next few days or so, there's a lot of them and my scanner only takes 2 at a time :sad2:

Hmm yeah, I noticed that they were very similar! Umm don't remember who was on it??? We don't have a whole lot of photos left from those trips cus most of them were on slides and they were lost or damaged :furious: And I don't remember a whole heck of a lot about those trips! :sad2:
When my baby makes his/her first trip to Disney (planning on Dec '07 for their first b-day!) I am going to take a BAZILLION photos! And then I am going to make a scrapbook, burn them onto several CD's and make a couple videos as well!! LOL

Hi! princess:
I just wanted to thank DonPacho for posting these pictures. My DH and I just love looking at the skyway ride. We have wanted to see pictures of it for so long because neither one of us remembers it. I wonder why they took it out of the park? The building that housed it looks so abandoned now. Seeing what it looked like is so cool. :)
This post-site is awsome!! I can't wait to see more pictures. :thumbsup2

I think it was taken out due to an accident that a CM lost his life in. I am not sure if that is the sole reason, but I'm pretty sure it was related. It disappeared right after the accident. :guilty:

The old snowspeeder and sail barge. A friend of mine worked on the construction of Lights, Motor, Action and said the snowspeeder is in a back part of the MGM lot and the construction crew used to play on it. (Fellow geeks: they treated it with respect, don't worry. ;) )

Endor used to look very lush, you know, when they pretended it was Endor.

They also used to send out characters year-round. This picture was taken in September (actually taken by David Prowse's neighbors! they held the camera for me! YAY!) Note Endor Vendors in the background.

Actually, there is! I had a bunch of old reels (16mm and 8mm) that my mom had from her childhood digitized a couple of years ago. There's a company that does it via their site - you mail your stuff to them and they send it back with the stuff on DVD or however you choose. You have the option of how you want it and what quality and they charge by the length of the reels. It was pretty affordable, imho.

The stollers have been around for quite awhile. Here are some photos of me, my father and sisters sometime from the summer of '76. As you can see, my baby sister is in one of the old style rental strollers. Have no idea why my mom took that photo. Not exactly the picture of a happy family enjoying their Disney vacation! Long, hot, hard day at the park no doubt. Dig my Dad's threads, especially the shoes (hushpuppies?) He wasn't stylish then and it has gone downhill from there! :rotfl:

From the looks of the seating, the area is most likely Tomorrowland. Not sure, but that could be the Indy Speedway in the background. As a bookend photo, here is one of me and MY son taken in the same general vicinity except pointing in the opposite direction from the older photo. Of course, the new one is almost exactly 30 years later! Man, I feel old.

I have a picture of my brother in one of those strollers in June 1972, so I imagine they've always had them. I've been wanting to figure out how to scan it, since it's my first trip picture to WDW - I'll have to ask my DS17 or DD15. I'm sure they know how!

I'm going to my parents' house today and I will be going through our old photo albums and scanning our pictures from Disney in the 80's. Maybe they're even from the late 70's??? I think there are some from both decades!
I love looking at the crowd photos - it's like someone has captured time and it's just a heartwarming thought that the Disney magic has been continuing for so long! (Geez, when did I become such a geek?!?!)

Here's one that I believe I took in 1977 when I was 10 years old. It was horribly faded and had a bunch of thumbtack holes from having been on a bulletin board for years and years. Photoshop cleaned it up pretty well, but I'm not thrilled about the way the grass looks.

as a 9 year old girl i was fascinated by the pink cake, so i guess im also in the minority of loving it! i also like what theyve done for 50. i tried to take pictures of it but it came out horrible!
i feel like i remember the faces on the mickey ice cream bars, but im not sure...had they disappeared before 1995? if not, i definitely downed a few myself!

There were lots of reasons why they stopped. Cast members getting hurt, people spitting, throwing stuff, or doing drugs on it, it had to be closed all the time b/c of wind (or rain, or lightning, etc).

Yes, that is what is now Cosmic Ray's. We always used to go to this restaurant first thing when I was a kid. When that stage rose up from below ground with the band playing as it rose, I knew I was at Disney! Took my wife and son to Cosmic Ray's back in February, and while the restaurant etc. took me back to when I was a kid, the lack of that "magic" stage was a bit of a letdown.
According to this page:
Cosmic Ray's Fun Facts (http://www.hiddenmickeys.org/WDW/MagicKingdom/Secrets/TL/CosmicRays.html)
the restaurant used to be called Tomorrowland Terrace and the stage still exists. Apparently, it is still used for guest music acts sometimes. Also nice little tidbit about the characters using Cosmic Ray's to stay dry before parades on rainy afternoons. Don't know how accurate this data is as most of the postings are a few years old.

I wonder if there are fewer strollers in the picture because it used to be harder to get a stroller? I seem to remember my Dad waiting in quite a long line that didn't move very quickly to get us strollers. Or maybe it just seemed like a long time to a little kid who wanted to get inside the park already! :) In any case, they have it down to a science now.

What Is River Country Now??????? Parts of it are actually still there. If you go out to Fort Wilderness and go to Mickey's Backyard BBQ, it is right next door. You can still see water slides and such. In fact the bathroom closest to the BBQ site is in the old locker rooms. From what I have read on Disboards, Disney closed it down because all that sunscreen and who knows what else from the swimmers was polluting Bay Lake. This is the same reason why you can't swim at the beach at the Poly and GF anymore.

I thought you couldn't swim in Bay Lake due to high bacteria levels. I thought they closed River Country because it was not cost effective to keep it open.
I did go to Mickey's Backyard BBQ and it was fun to see River Country. It was a neat place, we hadn't visited since they opened Typhoon Lagoon.

Okay, I scanned the slides Mom & Dad had bought in MK in the 70's. I imagine they are from our first trip in 1975 but not sure.
I have 21 of them so I think I need to post in multiple posts.
Once again, this is what they look like.
http://www.cassworld.ca/images/wdw1970-10.jpg
Unfortunately, they are big (tall) slides and when I scanned them, the tops and bottoms were cut off :(

This was taken during the "Electric Light Parade" in 1981 - I can still hum the theme song! Imagine my surprise when after developing the film, there was a person inside! :rotfl2: She looks thrilled to be "Doc"! :rotfl: :rotfl:

All the slides are from WDW. I did notice that some of the scenes in Pirates have changed over the years. Like the pirates used to chase the women around and now, the women chase the pirates
Also, if I am correct, in my slide with the wench for a bride, there's no "larger wench" whereas today, you can see her right next to the red head.

Why is the Sigma Phi Epsilon guy wearing a hard hat? Is he one of the Village People?
Hmm...maybe he is a wanna be monorail driver? When I was little they wore those cool uniforms with a helmet like that. I so thought it must be the dream job of the universe to be the monorail worker that got to wear that uniform and close all those doors...slam...slam...slam...slam...

Wow, you mean there used to be a tram from BW to the International Gateway?
What years?
The photo was taken September 1996, soon after the Boardwalk Inn & Villas opened. When we visited again in December 1997 it was gone. It ran all the way to the Swolfin. The day my photo was taken, the tram manufacturer was doing a photo shoot. Somewhere there is a sales brochure with a photo of me riding my wheelchair up the ramp into the accessible section at the back. Fame!
I suspect the boardwalk itself (ie the timber boarded walkway) was in place and operational before the Boardwalk (the hotel) opened. I am sure I heard somewhere that the tram was considered a danger because there was a danger of children falling under the wheels.
More recently I took a Disney cruise and noticed an identical tram running from the boat dock out to one of the beaches. I have often wondered if this is the same tram.

That tram used to be pink & teal (Swalphin colours) prior to the Boardwalk opening. I remember riding it in 1993 when we stayed at the Dolphin for a convention. It looks hideous with all that Boardwalk advertising on it. I miss that tram, though. :(
