I can't see them either but there is a trick I know that you can look a them. Right click on the x, then click properties. It will give you a url that the picture is located at. Copy that url and paste it in your browser bar, you will then be able to see it. You will have to do that with each picture but it works. :)

The wheel in the pics is on opposite sides... am I wrong in recalling that there were two suits side by side? Much to my son's dismay, they removed these when they renovated for the nemo ride. He was looking forward to finally being able to ready the controls in the hands.

***SHUDDER**** I wonder how long it took Disney to get that up? like...did people go to the park one day and see pink all on the bottom, then the next day on the top...then the decorations...or did they do it all in one night?

I found this photo with me in it ..... and the pink "thing" :scared1:

I soooo miss this part of the backlot at the Studios. A the risk of being unpopular I just don't get the draw for the motorsports stunt show thing, I'd rather still walk down the "neighborhood" streets at Christmastime with all of the decorations, snowmen and Osborne lights. Sigh...

It was refreshing to see the old castle peeking out from behind. My friend was 19 when we went and had never been to WDW and she had to witness that ugliness! At first sight from Main Street, she asked "Ew! Where is the real castle?" Thank goodness Fantasyland took care of us.

Pics are really nice STEANBOAT209. I remember those good old days. I wasn't fond of the Castle Cake either but like you said, it's part of Disney history. Got any more?

I went during the "Castle Cake" as well (I was 12 I think) and I was so disappointed.

so did they actually PAINT it?? and then have to strip the paint off??
then just all all that other stuff??
I guess I thought it was all like fiberglass stuff over it.

however they did it.... it was ugly!

No, they didn't actually paint it. It was some sort of covering.

EDIT: Hmm, coincidentally, my DisneyWorldTrivia page a day calendar has this fact for today -

In 1996, Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom was transformed into a giant birthday cake as part of WDW's 25th Anniversary celebration. It was covered with more than 400 gallons of pink paint and then decorated with "inflatable icing," 26 candles, and an assortment of giant pieces of "candy" (such as 3-foot lollipops).

So maybe I'm wrong...maybe it was painted! I always thought it was just pink casing.

Yep they painted most of it. Looks like the painted everything that was not covered by ether the inflatable candles or what looks like a lot of styrofoam facade. When they where done i imagine that they just painted over the pink. trying to take of the pink would probably hurt the castle walls.

I wonder how thick the layers of paint on those castle walls are!! They must repaint every few years, didn't they just pain a few years ago when they took down the Happiest Celebration on Earth decorations? It's funny to think somewhere under the gray, there is still pink paint.

Found some pictures and got them scanned last night. These are from 1995-1998 I think. There are only two that I know the exact year on, and I'll comment on them as they come up.

First up, just proving I'm old enough to remember, and have gone on the Skyway.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/Cpthowdy758/Old%20School/skyway.jpg

If you look closely, you'll notice a nice long wallet chain. This was before Disney put the smack down on such thing.

Yes it is. This is before they enclosed the 'sidewalk cafe'. From inside today you can see pretty clear distinctions between the original interior of the restaurant and what used to be sidewalk seating.

Haven't posted pictures here before so let's see if I can get this to work.

First we have a couple of WDW pictures circa 1977:

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt156/chavalehbird/3290157695_c87a52cd0c.jpg
Me not being happy despite the fabulous ears.

My brother and I with dad who is sporting that lovely 70's look.

Then we didn't go again until the mid '80s, not sure what year.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt156/chavalehbird/3290979464_185ca670d3.jpg
Those were some attractive home made smocks there (no, not really). The two kids had grown to four kids at this point.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt156/chavalehbird/3290159307_e419c893eb.jpg
And dad grew 1980's facial hair.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt156/chavalehbird/3290161549_62d59b7183.jpg
And here's our ticket from that trip, might help to pin down the date if it looks familiar to someone. I think there's even a day left on it! They were in one of my parent's wallets back home when it was stolen and then tossed into a ditch which is why it's all muddy and wrinkled looking. I guess the silly robbers weren't planning a trip to WDW.

OK, I have another "in" for a concert, if it ever happens ....
If within the next two years, starting in October, NKOTB go to NYC, I have my niece promising we will go while she is a student at AMDA. And even if it means divorce, I will have to splurge and get us VIP, if they keep that up.
Then my 18-year-old niece can laugh her bottom off at me through the whole thing. But she is just as bad as me, I can see her cutting up and carrying on. In fact, I KNOW she will cut up and carry on.
Last summer, she came to Houston and I was playing "Tonight" in the car and she loved it, even though my husband was making fun of me the entire time. In fact, she put it, and all of "Hanging Tough," on her IPod.
Good taste runs in the family.

Well here goes! I finally have been working on scanning some old slides and photos from my archives (and my family's archives) from my annual Disney visits since the park opened. I haven't come close to going through them all, but have a few that I scanned in.

Here's a shot of me & my uncle sitting by the fence that lined the sidewalk to Frontierland Station in MK in 1973...that field in the background is now filled with Big Thunder Mountain railroad, and where we are standing approximately is filled with Splash Mountain:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231620-5.jpg

Here we are again...fascinated with one of the big horses in front of the castle. The bridge to Liberty Square is to the left, and the left walkway up the castle just behind us. Note that the trees and hadges hadn't grown in much yet, so you can still clearly see through to Fantasyland behind the castle, where as now you see mostly the hedges lining the back pathways:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231620-4.jpg

Here's the center circle area in front of the castle, circa 1984. The little round flowerbed in the middle is where the Partners statue now stands, and notice how the tree planters and benches still surround the center area (I miss that - much more shady and less crowded-feeling back then in the middle):

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309232241.jpg

The 1983 version of the Frontierland Station...note how wide open the path is, and how you look right at the train station from Pecos Bill's (on the left). Of course, Splash Mountain wedged itself into this space, and forced Frontierland Station farther back:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231620-6.jpg

Check out Space Mountain from 1983/4...not much of a line outside...but also not much adornment to the building! Just an entrance to the corridor, and the little spaceman-coaster sculpture out front. And no arcade building either:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231929-3.jpg

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea subs - before they became an empty lake with Ariel's grotto, and before that became Pooh's wood play area. This is circa 1983:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231929-5.jpg

Epcot 1984 - Horizons. An old favorite for me too...now Mission:Space sits on this spot:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309230940-2.jpg

Next door to Horizons sat World of Motion...which was probably my favorite overall ride in Epcot. I was always a car guy, so the history of cars and all the cool cars inside, as well as the cool exhibit on the way out of real cars and future concepts, really made my day. This was also 1984. Test Track now fills this space:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309230940-7.jpg

1984, Epcot World Showcase near Japan. OK...so not too much different here, except I was happy that I found a photo that showed the double-decker busses still running around the World Showcase:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231619-2.jpg

In Epcot, they used to have this roaming Gypsy puppet show called "Promenade Players"...this shot is from 1984 I believe:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231929-1.jpg

Here's a monorail shot coming out of MK towards Contemporary. Note that just below the monorail, the tree-lined access road is now the extended MK bus depot area...and notice how Contemporary still had no convention center attached to it:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-070309134908-1.jpg

View in 1984 from the Fort Wilderness boat:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-070309134908-2.jpg

Inside the Contemporary around the same time, there was not yet a Chef Mickeys or Concourse Steakhouse...there was just the Terrace Cafe:

http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/20608466-050309231929-6.jpg

This is a shot taken from the mini boats rented from the Contemporary in 1984 - a cruise past River Country, the still thriving 'Waterin' Hole" near Fort Wilderness that is no more:

Horizons.

One of the gags in Horizons was that you could choose one of three endings. Zipping around in that little spacecraft was one of them (the others involved a flying aircar and a personal submersible).

Sounds about right. I can't remember those totem poles, but I'm also not familiar with that smoking site. I'm like the frog in the boiling pot not knowing he's being cooked - I have been going to Disney so often every year since it opened that it's hard to notice the changes since they're incremental and over a long period of time!

Nope. That's where the Frontierland Parade Gate is now. Splash Mountain is a little bit further up to the right.

Thanks! Helps me picture the current location a little better.

What year did they put the partners statue in?

I'm not sure if I have the exact year correct, but I want to say 1995 or so. They first put in the statue and still left more of the planters around it so it was more tucked in, then later renovated the center area to open it all up like it is today (not as pretty but fits more people in the space for the stage shows, I guess!).

Great photos!!!! Thank you!!!!

This totem pole one is interesting to me.

A while back, someone posted this photo:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn76/Tri-Circle-D/tikipolesap2-1.jpg

When it was posted, folks could not place these totem poles anywhere in the MK. I posted the photo on the camping boards, thinking perhaps these totems had been somewhere in Fort Wilderness, but no one remembered them there. An astute observer pointed out that there appeared to be a railroad crossing arm in the back ground of the photo. But the consensus was that this photo did not look like WDW.

Looking at these two photos, I think the fence and the rocks look pretty darn close, and the totem pole in your picture looks pretty close to the front totem (the one closest to the fence) in the older photo.

On my last visit to the MK in 2/09, I snapped this photo near the exit of BTMRR, thinking perhaps that these were the mysterious totems, but none of these look the same as the totems in the old photo:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn76/Tri-Circle-D/ValentinesDayPresidentsDay200938-1.jpg

I think that the totems in the two older photos may be the same. Anybody else have any observations on this?

Doesn't appear to be the same ones, but here is a pic from 1979 of my sister and I in front of mystery totem poles. I used to think it was Discovery Island, but I'm clueless. Really, I don't even remember going to Discovery Island since I was so young. And I really do think this is the first and only time I ever cried in WDW (what was wrong with me??).

But look at the railing ... it appears to be similar to the other pics posted, but not exact. But there is water behind everything in my pic. Anyone want to take a stab at it?

I would say it looks about 90% sure that the older photo are the same totems as in my photo, just from a slightly different angle and farther away. I'd guess too that the other photo is from 1971 or early 1972, because it looks like landscaping is incomplete, and the trees are much much smaller. But the hill in the background, the tree just to the left of the frame, the main totem behind where I'm sitting, and the tall rock jutting up on the left of frame all seem a perfect match.

I actually didn't know the location of this either - I did alot of searching on the web to come up with either Fort Wilderness or maybe Magic Kingdom. Some other Disney fans I know came up with some old photos of the path to the Frontierland train station that had the same fence and rock lined path in it, which was the first guiding suspicion...then further searching turned up a written description of the Frontierland station area that specifically mentioned the large grassy area spotted with trees and totem poles where BTMRR is currently. That seemed to all come together as pretty solid information, since I put together 2 or 3 different sources that all placed my photo in Frontierland.

It's been very interesting to go back through my own archives and find all this stuff that I can't even remember!

I'd guess yours are in Frontierland too actually. Just a wild guess...but in the background on the water, it looks like the prop wash from one of the Tom Sawyer rafts?...hard to tell for sure, but with the matching fence and rocks at the bottom, you seem to be in a similar area but not the same spot. You might be much closer to Rivers of America, maybe near the spot where the Splash Mountain flume makes the turnaround after the drop? That would give you the Tom Sawyer rafts in the background. Wild guess!

Good eye on the prop wash, I never noticed that!
I'm going to be on a totem pole hunt in May. I'm deeply curious now.

Thanks, this was something that had me stumped for a while. Interestingly enough, there used to be quite a few totem poles around Ft. Wilderness, and now there are none. It is amazing how barren this area of the MK looks in the older photo, yet how extensive the landscaping is in your photo.

Have they even taken down the totems by the Settlement depot? I thought I remembered those still being there...though I only passed through FW last year once, and haven't stayed there for 3 years.

The last totem pole that I recall seeing in the Settlement area was in front of the Settlement trading post. Here is a photo of my DD next to it in the mid '90s. This photo was taken from the Settlement trading post porch, looking toward Trail's End and Pioneer Hall:

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn76/Tri-Circle-D/20.jpg

This is a photo of the area taken in November, 2008, again looking toward Pioneer Hall:

I don't think that there is a single totem pole anywhere in Fort Wilderness, anymore.

Prop wash is the disturbance made in the water by the propeller of a boat. Like the little bubbles and waves that you can just see in the back left edge of the photo of the totem poles by the water.

They mean the backwash from the propellers on the Rafts that run to and from Tom Sawyer's Island.

I did a little photo comparison, and I believe these are some of the same totems used throughout the years. Where these things are located, I have no idea.

I think it's clear that these two posted by Tri-circle-D and zackiedawg are the same.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g201/lockardaw/WDW/Totem1.jpg

I also think that these two totems include some of the same elements. Maybe they are individual figures stacked on top of each other and somewhat modular. It looks to me like one in the newer photo from Tri-circle-D has an additional figure (white animal holding a stick) in place of the short square smiley face in the photo posted by angey77. But it looks like the next figure up is the same (you can just see the feet in the older photo).

Thanks for posting this comparison.

I think the first two photo excerpts you posted do show that these photos are of the same totem pole.

As for the totem pole at Fort Wilderness, I never really studied that "white animal holding a stick." What is up with that thing? Pretty creepy if you ask me.

I think these totem poles mean something. It would be interesting if a Native American could tell us what is going on here.

I also wonder why all of the totem poles are gone from Ft. Wilderness, but they still have them at the MK, Epcot, and at Wilderness Lodge.

This older pic, (1972) was before my time... but interesting that the pervious poster mentioned the RR crossing arm. MK Train runs in that area and that may be the crossing arm?? Which if those poles are in the Frontierland smoking area, it could be correct, just imagine no landscaping or anything else.....

Tri-circle-D

I marked what appears to be a railroad crossing arm with a red arrow, and what looks like a railroad crossing sign with a green arrow. I wonder what the thing that I marked with a yellow arrow is?

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn76/Tri-Circle-D/tikipolesap2-1-1.jpg

I never knew that the train station used to be in a different location from where it is now. It seems to me that the area in this photo might be where Splash Mountain is now.

It still amazes me that there was an area visible to guests that looked this barren in the MK. I always thought everything in the MK looked perfect and magical, but this area sure doesn't, at least not in this photo.

Thanks for (re)posting these photos! I think you are right- this does look like the area in question. In the second photo, what is the area along the water on the right? That isn't the loading area for Tom Sawyer island, is it? Looks like a picnic area or something.

In the first photo, it looks like a parade is going on, and Pooh and the Honey Pot are walking off by where BTMRR is now. Maybe that was the entrance/exit area for the parades back then (because the train station was in a different location at the time)?

Interesting stuff!

It is amazing to me how different this area looks now, with SM and BTMRR.

That's the canoe loading area. They used to have the longboat style canoes that you could ride - the dock and loading area for those canoes is actually still there between Tom Sawyer and Big Thunder, but it's all closed off now.

Thank you for posting these photos! I saw the small building on the far right of your second photo (and the middle of your third photo) on my last visit, but it was night, and I couldn't see very well. It looked like it was covered with roll-up fabric shades, which suggested to me that it might sometimes be used for something. Does anyone know what this building was or is used for? It does make sense. And honestly, I don't think they are noticable. Especially if you are not a smoker. :rotfl2: That area is now the smoking section. If i had not been looking for them, I would have never found them. And the small building there appears to be a drink stand. But I didn't pay much attention to it because I was trying to look over the bushes to see the poles better.

Yes and no. Yes, it's still up there: the old Imageworks at the top of the Imagination Pavillion. No, it's closed to guests.

My parents took a trip to Disney World in the early 70's ( I think 72 ) when Space Mountain first opened. On our trip in 1999 in line for Space Mountain they show a video, I think right before you enter the large loading room. Standing there in line watching the video we saw my parents on the video. I have tried searching for the video, but I don't really know what to call it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:worship::worship::worship:

I don't know if this will help narrow down your search but Space Mountain opened in 1975. I wouldn't know where you could find that video. You've probably already searched YouTube.

Here is one from Disneyland in 1976. I'm cracking up laughing in the picture, because Eeyore had covered up my face completely and finally realized and he moved his paw. And of course this was way before Character Handlers and lines. So I guess I'm lucky that I'm the only kid in the picture.

Hi Folks,

The old photos are great!

I'm currently writing a new book on the railroads at WDW...one of the key chapters is the WDW RR in the Magic Kingdom.

I'm in real need of earlier photos of the railroad for the book, prior 1988. If anyone has any of these older photos, I would really like to hear from you!

Thanks!

AFAIK, most of the first Peter Pans at DLR had female "friends". One of the first is a friend of mine who currently works at WDW (and not in Entertainment) -- I'll have to show her that photo!

I don't think so. Are all cars on the road "old cars?" Are all people who have been born "old people?"

Photos that I think are appropriate in this thread are views of the parks that are no longer available for one reason or another. Maybe an attraction that is gone, or character costumes that are no longer seen, or even crowd pictures including fashions of bygone days.

I can still hear the "Fifteen years and we're having a party!" jingle.

We were in the elevator with a man wearing a hat that said, "I'm a winner!!" I think it was in the Living Seas. The had was not particularly disney, just a straw hat with sparkles. My mom asked the man what he won, and he replied, "I won the hat."

Don't know if it was true or not, but we all laughed. I won a pin.

I can still hear that jingle as well and I don't know why because it wasn't a particularly amazing jingle, but I can still hear, "15 years, we're having us a party! 15 years, the party's just begun!" Why it stuck, I don't know.

Could be because it was the year our car got jacked in the Magic Kingdom parking lot. Ha! I was just a kid, but what an experience. Was that our prize? :scared1:

It appears that the kiosk is no longer in the same spot as the vintage photo that was posted on the previous page. On the vintage photo, the kiosk is next to the carousel, closer to IASW. It was probably moved at some point to make more walkway space. ??

According to this 1973 park map from Yesterland.com, there were two Information and Ticket booths in Fantasyland: one next to what is now The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh, and one in front of the Pinocchio Village Haus Restaurant (this booth has since been removed).

It looks to me like that kiosk is the ticket booth where you would buy your extra "A" through "E" tickets. I remember when buying an "E" ticket would be $.80. You could also pick up a park map there.

Those little ticket booths were scattered throughout the park.

My last pics were so large. I dont know what I did wrong. I'll try something different here to see if I can make them smaller.

This is River country. I'm not sure where that was. My DSIL said that it was where the campgrounds are now. That is my DD coming down the slide.

I think I posted this here a while back, but your photo made me want to compare. This is me from 1979, I believe. I wasn't sure where mine was taken, but I think it's clear that it's the same place yours was: Discovery Island.

Actually, it's still there... sort of. Disney has basically left everything there and abandoned the site in 2001. It is close to where the Fort Wilderness camps still are - they were always there, too.

Loved looking at all the pictures. Do remember most. Loved 20,000 leagues under the sea. I remember when the characters would roam around and you didn't have to wait on a long line to see them.

Some of the clothes made me laugh. I remember when my daughter always put her pants in the big scrunch socks. I remember when the guys wore those long socks with the different color socks. Couldn't wait to get rid of my DH's as he didn't want to see them go.

These are from April 2009. You can also see an arial satellite photo if you go to google and click maps then type Disney Fort Wilderness Campground in the search area. You may have to scroll through the campground, but you will see RC. You can zoom in.

I think that was the major factor. Since they banned swimming in the Lake/Lagoon, and the water from RC was from Bay Lake. But its such an eye sore. An abandoned water park! And when you walk to Pioneer Hall, you see the fence surrounding RC.

Swimming in the lake was banned way before RC closed. I'm pretty sure it was a cost cutting move on Disney's part.

Actually some of the theories are that it was closed becuase of the high bacteria contamination in the lake and several deaths had occurred from other FL lakes near that time. Also there was a law that said that the yahd to have a different water saource other than the lake, which would've been big money and also since part of the park was the lake, it wouldn't work so well. I think it was closed for like 3 or 4 years before they offically announced that it would not ever be reopened. Up until then it was kind left in the air like it may open again at a alter date.

Nice photos. It's a shame that this is all overgrown like that. I see the rock slide that was in one of my pictures. I bet Disney will develop that into some sort of attraction.

I bet it sits like that forever, or gets totally cleared for something else, but no for many years.

Actually WDW has several places like this. The unfinished side of Pop, the old Discovery Island, and until recently the treehouse villas.

Onetreehill just posted some pictures in her TR of RC from March. She got really close up ones. Super creepy looking.

Hi everyone! I am in possession of my grandparents photo albums and they have tons of pics from the 70's and 80's that I need to get scanned in. So, as soon as I do that I will come back and post them!

Would someone be able to tell me how to post the picture big though? I used photobucket and just copy & paste the IMG address but this is the size they turn out to be:

The only advice I can give is that if you're scanning smaller photos, that's the size they'll come out if you scan them on a full page scanner. If you crop the selected area on your scanning program (ie, only scan the photo, not the whole page), it should come out much larger. This may vary by the type of scanner you have though. But normally on photobucket, the pictures come out initially the size they were scanned (or uploaded for digital pics - which is usually much larger).

I don't have any picture to post just yet still trying to convert slide's to picture's and then import them.. LOL But it is really sad to see that RC really went to crap.. What would be nice is that they decide to revive RC and just close it off from the lake and have it just be regular water.. To tell you the truth I would rather go to river country than either TL or BB.. I just love how the water park made you think you were in the middle of the woods.. But I think they had the greatest water attractions for any waterpark at DW... I really wish they would bring it back..

I am here to share my old pictures of Disney!!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dulc1/sets/72157622208909016/

My first trip was in 1976.I was 2 yrs old. and have made many many trips since then...
I guess since Polaroid film was expensive back then pictures were few and far between but my parents got the ones that matter most :)
I don't know what years they all because they failed to write any information on any of the pictures.
The newer looking ones of me and the other 2 kids were trips we took when they came *my cousins* from TX for the summer. So we were older and those were with a film camera..LOL
Does anyone know where the one was taken of me in the room with the statues of Mickey and Minnie?
And the one with the horns? I can't figure out where that is at either. We only went to Disney except one trip to Marineland but I believe I was older when we went there.I can't figure out where it might have been from.
The Minnie Mickey and Pooh bear I still have today :) :goodvibes:goodvibes
It is funny seeing my Daddy smoking outside of 200000 Leagues Under The Sea.Not that I promote smoking but it shows how times have changed.
I custom make outfits for DD to wear to the parks and I see my Mama did the same for me.The "overalls" have pooh bear on them.I have Mickey sandals on in some of the photos too.

Thanks for sharing all of the Disney photos of the past!! And glad that I have some to share too :)
