This was a MK parade and to me, one of the strangest! The inflated characters were about 3 stories high and some of the accompanying floats were a bit circus-like!

These parade floats were borrowed from Disneyland's 35th anniversay. It had a Mardi Gras theme. If I remember correctly, they would throw plastic bead neckalaces to the crowd during the parade route. I think they called it "Party Gras!" or somthing like that. My family visited Disneyland in 1991, and WDW in 1992, so I got to see it at both parks!:smickey:

Really??? 1992??? I was there in March of 1992 on my honeymoon. I'll ask my husband if he remembers...better yet, I'll just bust out my honeymoon video - I haven't seen that in years :)

This parade is LEGEND in my family. My mom and aunt burned their butts while sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the parade. Hysterical. . . their butts were bright red for weeks! Looked like a sunburn! Still harrass them to this day.
...now THAT there is REALLY funny....

Carlamouse - Ah! Now the floats make a lot more sense, especially for a Mardi Gras theme! Shame, shame Disney trying to fool us as if these were really for a Surprise Celebration! The only thing these characters threw was your neck out trying to see up to the top of them! Thanks for the info!

Those same floats were toys at burger king, i believe! I have some still in the package, and they'd come with a MK map piece you'd put together when you had them all!

Acutally, I guess my family would have had to have visited Disneyland in 1990 to have seen this parade. I was looking at our Disneyland photos recently, and I couldn't remeber the year we went, but I knew that we saw the parade floats at both parks.:scratchin

Hi. My name is Steph. My uncle (nbstatic) posted some pictures on here from the 80s. Everyone thought the woman in the picture was an 80s mom...but that was really the little boy's sister. She's my mom. Someone wanted before and after pictures of her, so here you go.
My mom in the 80s.
(Oh my gosh, what was she thinking wearing those clothes and those SHOES??? Who wears heels to Disney World???)

I'm starting to think I may have dreamed this - but does anyone else remember Michael Jackson performing at the castle in MK in the late
70's/early 80's? I remember seeing him perform "Rock With You" from Off The Wall somewhere in WDW - I was little & I remember that I wanted to go, and my mom said this would be a very famous star one day. Off the Wall came out in '79 but we were there in '77 & in the 80's (can't even remember the exact years) - so I'm assuming it had to be early 80's. I cannot for the life of me find any old photos of his performance, and my mom says she doesn't remember this. He also did a short movie or show with Figment at Epcot - anyone remember this or am I off the wall on this one too....

Cool Hat Riopooh!
I think I may have posted this before, but it's one of my favorites! This was taken just after Donald took my Mickey ears off and covered my face with them! (ignore the date- scanner was not working at the time and I took a digital image if the pic and forgot to take the date off!)
Back then it was just pics with the characters- I don't remember ever getting autographs. And they were just out randomly in the park. The only characters I remember from that trip and the '76 trip were Mickey, Donald, 3 Little Pigs, Big Bad Wolf, Eeyore and Pooh.

Several people have pointed out the changes in the characters' appearance over the years. The Big 5 seem to have remained pretty much unchanged. However, I did notice in a few of the pictures in this topic that Mickey's ears seem to be bigger than they are today. Here are a few examples that I picked out from previous pages:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/uploads/1406/mick_min_big_ears.jpg http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/uploads/1406/mm_big_ears.jpg
Does anybody else notice this, or is it just me? I suppose it could just be the angle.
I TOTALLY thought I was hallucinating when I thought the Mickster's ears looked HUGE in some of the old photos! I'm still dying over the Rainbow Minnie's blue eyeshadow and dark pink lipstick! :cutie:

My first trip was in 1996 at the ripe old age of 13, but I did find an "Information Guide" and some post cards from 1972. I recently visited with my mom's side of the family for a wedding. My mom asked her sister to bring photo albums because she's working on a scrapbook. Apparently, back in 1972, my grandfather won a trip to Walt Disney World. He was a door to door salesman and it was a prize given to the top seller. My aunt Carol didn't have any pictures, but these were in the photo album.

I've really enjoyed looking at all these pictures. It brings back alot of memories. Here are two pictures taken in October 1972. I'm the little girl in the flower overalls and my brother is in the striped overalls. My parents really did not take too many pictures but these ones were cute sorry about the quality, but they are old pictures.

Someone refresh my memory, when did the skyway go away?
I haven't read ahead to see if your question had been answered, but I found this write up. :( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incidents_at_Disney_parks
Skyway
Main article: Skyway (Disney)
On February 14, 1999, 65-year-old part-time custodian Raymond Barlow was critically injured when he fell off the Skyway ride. He was cleaning the Fantasyland Skyway station platform when the ride was accidentally turned on. Barlow was in the path of the ride vehicles, and grabbed a passing gondola in an attempt to save himself. He lost his grip and fell 40 feet, landing in a flower bed near the Dumbo ride. He died shortly after being taken to a local hospital. The Skyway ride, which had been scheduled to be closed before the accident occurred, was permanently closed on November 11, 1999.[31] As a result of the accident, OSHA fined Walt Disney World US$4,500 for violating federal safety codes in that work area.

They really have! I cracked up when I saw the picture of my mom with King Louie and compared it to the one in 2004-who'd of thought a character would have a 'receding hair line!!!:lmao: ... and check out Chip's "neck".

I lost that style in the early '90's after I had my girls (after you have kids, who has time:goodvibes ....
I was wearing it like that back in the 80's...I guess I'm older than you.....
I remember me and my girlfriends would have contests to see how high we could get it.

the castle cake was a shock (instant hatred! ) the first time I saw it, however by the end of my 2 weeks there I must say that it had grown on me
I need to see if my mom still has any photo from when our trips there in the 70s
The castle was decorated like a cake when we went on our honeymoon in 96. I hadn't been since the 80's and when I saw the castle I was so disappointed. But it was amazing nonetheless. I have pics of me when I was little, some from my first visit at 2yo in 1974. The memories of the old family trips are the reason why I take my kids now and we keep going back.

I just found some slides I didn't know I had!!!
I've known I have some pictures from either my 1978 trip or my 1980 trip, but not too many. Unfortunately my parents didn't seem to take too many pictures for some reason. :confused3 There are some parade pictures, and there's a picture of me with Tigger. I was complaining that there weren't more pictures of me with characters, and my mom said that was my fault, I didn't want to have much to do with them. Ok, I can buy that, I'm just kind of getting over that now. :rotfl:
But I just decided to go look through some slides in the basement. Among probably the latest slides we have are some from our 1978 trip. There are a couple of the carousel. (I'm assuming that's at WDW. I'm only looking at it held up against the light, so I can't see details.) Then there's some sort of stage show of the Three Little Pigs. Then there's the Grand Prix Raceway. There are several that look like they're taken from the Skyway. Then there are Goofy, Mickey, and Donald from what looks like a parade.
I'll try to get them scanned in and post them, but it likely won't be soon. I'm just so excited I had to share.

These pictures are great! I remember the flying bee scene on the backstage tour, I always wished they would pick me for that!
Does anyone remember when they were filming Mickey Mouse Club at MGM and you could sit in the audience?? I got to participate in one of the games back when Brit and Justin were mousketeers!! The highlight was that after I got to go sit in the audience and one of the mousketeers came out and sat right in front of me. These are really great! I only wish my parents had been as camera-happy as I am. There are so few pictures of me at DW as a child. I think we have about 20 pictures of mostly darkness that was supposed to be It's a Small World, but there are rarely any pictures of us. Hmmmm.....

We use to be so conservative with our photos when we were buying film! I can't imagine in 5 years from now how long this thread will be! Now we have to scan our photos of the past to add to this thread. I know now my camera is a 10.1MB pixel camera that I can take 1400 hundred photos or 55 minutes of video. It really is a new generation. It's really appreciated to all of the people that take the time to scan old photos and upload them for this nostalgia thread!

I wonder how much a night cost at the Poly back then:confused3
My parents told me that when we went to the Poly for the first time in '76, it was about $50/night. We went the first time because it was cheaper than going to the Jersey Shore. I have similar photos, but I had no idea they were from the Poly... man, the decor has changed.

SteamBoatWillysKin - So true about film vs. digital! I look back at how few pictures I have of my first trips. It was a luxury to take any 'artsy' type photo back then.

I went to WDW almost every year from 1982 to 1993 so I know my parents have lots of old pics at home. Next time I'm there I'll haul them out and scan them to add them to the thread. I made it through the whole thread and I have a few comments.
the restaurant used to be called Tomorrowland Terrace and the stage still exists. Apparently, it is still used for guest music acts sometimes.
This is true. My sister has played with her marching band in a MK parade for a week during the past two winters. While they were there, their jazz band would play at Cosmic Ray's and use the moving stage.
Parts of it are actually still there. If you go out to Fort Wilderness and go to Mickey's Backyard BBQ, it is right next door. You can still see water slides and such. In fact the bathroom closest to the BBQ site is in the old locker rooms.
I think I would find it kind of creepy to see the remaining bits of River Country.
This was taken during the "Electric Light Parade" in 1981 - I can still hum the theme song! Imagine my surprise when after developing the film, there was a person inside! :rotfl2: She looks thrilled to be "Doc"! :rotfl: :rotfl:

I know others have commented on this already but this dwarf is hilarious! :rotfl: I'm guessing you couldn't see the faces in the hats at the time?
Wow, I remember those strollers, I rode in a few of them. :teeth:
Hey, does anyone remember the strollers at Sea World? I used to love them when I was little. They were shaped like Shamu and dolphins and things. Do they still do that?
oh my god! i was just killin' myself laughing at this!!!!! :rotfl: really way too funny. the same ugly outfit on 2 different people......way way too funny
When you pointed this out, I just about fell out of my chair.
The sky ride is gone and the pics show the old Dumbo ride.
You say the photos show the "old" Dumbo ride. How is it different now?
I love looking at all of these old photos!! They are just great. Here is an old article from Time Magazine: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,910109-1,00.html
In this article, they mention that you can get a roast beef dinner at Cinderella's Castle for less than five bucks.
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r5/Saramcw/01-14-2007012841pm.jpg
The photo is um from 1999? Countdown to Extinction, which is now Dinosaur, That's me in the Grey Roots sweater, that's my best friend beside me in the crash position. This ride scared her.. She shook for a hour after...
I knew you were from Canada as soon as I saw the Roots sweater.

I remember Cypress Gardens. Is it still around?
OK, these aren't as "old" as the ones I've posted from '73, '76 & '79, but I was showing my kids the pictures of the '97 trip DH and I took before they were born (they couldn't believe we went with out kids ) and thought- "Hey, these are old park photos!" And yeah, 1997... so the cake castle :sad2:
Keep in mind these were taken with a cheap, point and shoot. They are in an album now so I just took digital images of them. Enjoy!

It's not so much that I didn't like the cake castle- it was amazing, but I'd not been to the MK since I was 13 and I really had my heart set on seeing the "real" castle. And for those that had that 'once in a lifetime' vacation in 1997 it may have been a real downer! bnf2 - You're welcome! Feel free to use my pictures as you want. I wasn't really a scrapbooker back in '97 but I kept my pictures in an old album (all 100 or so including a jaunt to Universal and a shuttle launch that trip) and I recently scanned them all in and stored them properly. I'm working on improving them before I eventually put them in a decent scrapbook.
I'm starting to slow down a bit in the outdoors thing but I still love to day hike and camp some. Hope to travel and KOA cabin camp with DH when we retire in a few months (DH is definitely NOT a camper!).

Remember these? Make your Guest of Honor badges. You told the CM the year of your first visit and you could get this badge to wear (stick on; not pin type). I think it required a coupon to redeem.

I am loving this thread!!!!
When my parents took us to WDW as a child it was either 1980 or 1981, there was only MK and 3 hotels. The Poly (where we stayed), the Contemporary, and what else??????? I wasn't the Floridian.
I even remember River Country that was there when we went. I remember seeing the construction for Epcot.
The other hotel was then the Golf Resort, next the Disney Inn, now Shades of Green.

Until I read this thread I had completely forgotten about all the various topiaries!!! As soon as I saw that picture I had the most vivid memory of my Dad pointing them out to me excitedly. I didn't even remember remembering that!
Your '81 map says "Free Attractions". I was very young when I went in the 80's so I wasn't aware of this - did you have to have tickets to ride the "major" rides?? Hmmmmm If that were the case, I'm assuming park admission must have been very reasonable.

according to my DH, you had to buy tickets to every ride, like a county fair. he hasn't been since the early '80's and we keep having the same conversation over and over:
him: so are we gonna get to ride mission space?
me: yes.
him: what about expedition everest?
me: yes.
him: and space mountain and pirates *and* the railroad roller coaster thing????
me: yes. we are doing EVERYTHING. it's all included in the ticket.
i don't know how many times i'm gonna have to say this for him to get it!!???!!??

Sorry! Totally missed this question :) As best as I can remember, all the rides were 'free' with our 2 day passes (which I believe cost a whopping $18 for students). I don't recall having to pay for anything but meals and souvenirs. The 2 BIG rides were SM and BTMRR and I know we didn't pay for those in '81.

Ticket books with the A-E tickets were used from the park's opening in 1971 through 1979. In 1980 the books were changed to have tickets which could be used on any ride instead of the A-E tickets. Passports were also sold in 1980 for the first time.
By the end of 1981 ticket books were discontinued in favor of the new passports that debuted in 1980.

Someone has a thread in the Theme Parks Attractions Board about the topiaries and how they seem to have disappeared over the years. But the Search feature has improved in the past week and if you Search using Topiaries you'll find several threads on this topic.

Thanks for the kind words. I shot Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides almost exclusively, since I got my first camera at 12 years old (I'm 52 now...). My brother and I made three trips to MK in the 1974-1975 time frame (MK *was* WDW in those days) and I'm finally getting around to making digital copies of them. Believe it or not, these were *not* digitized via a transparency scanner. Instead, I projected them onto a 20" X 30" piece of FoamCore, and photographed the projected image with my Nikon D50. The results exceeded my expectations and I judge them to be as good, if not better, than what I could do with my (older) flatbed scanner, and MUCH MUCH faster!
Those posted here are just a few of the slides from that time period. A good many of the others are Instamatic 110 format, and the film is T-I-N-Y. I'll give those a shot this weekend and see what I can come up with.
I have dozens of Carousels of slides from vacations here, there, and yon, from about the early 80's, and I hope to use this little shortcut to convert them all to digital.

I think it was taken out due to an accident that a CM lost his life in. I am not sure if that is the sole reason, but I'm pretty sure it was related. It disappeared right after the accident. :guilty:
What year was the skyway taken out? I remember it ,but not sure if I actuall yremember it from the 780's when I was a small kid there ,or from the mid 90's when I went back again for the first time as an adult. For some reason I think it was there in the 90's. But I could be remembering wrong.

Considering the age (30+ years), the medium (110 format) and the conversion method (see below), I'm pretty happy with them.
************************************************** ******
Redundant, but noted again, in case anyone is interested in trying this method:
Conversion method: projection onto 20" X 30" foam core board, using Kodak Carousel slide projector, captured using Nikon D50 dSLR, 18-135mm lens, ISO 200, f/7.1 aperture, shutter set by camera, based on CW average auto-metering. Some PP (crop, sharpen, straighten, adjust WB, adjust contrast) done in Picasa2. How's that for el-cheapo (Nikon equipment notwithstanding)?

This too isn't a great pic because I had to pull it out of the scrapbook - but in 1997 my entire family went to Disney together for the last time (for all of us to go). To add a bit - my grandparents took me, my sister and my cousins (and our parents) to Disney from the time I was in the womb until I was 13 years old. In 1997 they bought us all tickets to the park for one more trip together...with husbands and boyfriends this time around. I will cherish this memory forever! We got to be the Grand Marshalls in the Christmas parade...it was so exciting! (Hehe...that would be my crazy dh in the joker's hat! LOL)

Good question, but that was so long ago, and I'm so old, that I really do not remember. I consulted a google earth satellite shot of the MK, and best I can tell, I must've been standing at the end of the "spoke" leading from the "hub" between Main Street and the castle, approximately where the futuristic "Tomorrowland" sign is, today, looking toward the "StarJets" ride, now known as "Astro Orbiter". Stitch would now be on the left, and Buzz on the right. Carousel of Progress lies to the right, and slightly behind the StarJets ride, and Space Mountain would be behind StarJets, and slightly to the left, although it does not appear in this photo. What the orange wall is, I have no idea, unless maybe it was part of the StarJets ride, perhaps the queueing area...? I believe that the TTA boarding area is in this area, too, so maybe the orange wall is in some way related to that.
Maybe someone with a better memory can fill in some details here.

Not that you asked, but...
If you would like to preserve these photos from further damage, try getting them out with dental floss- just slip it under one corner and work it back forth until it comes out. If it's really stubborn, heat the picture up a little with a hair dryer and then try the dental floss.
Once they are all out you can get them into a safe album for long-term storage. Good luck.

thanks, but actually the part that will ruin the picture is the plastic cover. It is stuck on the actual photo, so to pull it off would ruin the picture itself.

Can someone put this into perspective comparing it to today? Meaning, is this looking towards what would be space mountain? I see what appears to be building that stitch and buzz are in, but what's with the orange wall? Did you have to walk around it to get to SM?
This is just crossing over the bridge, looking at The Lunching Pad (behind it is Space Mountain)....where they sell Turkey Legs in MK. To the left is now "Stich" to the right is now Monsters, and BUzz.
Id assume the orange wall was construction.

What a wonderful mural! Is it gone now?! I would hate to think it was painted over!! It's got everybody...even the critters from The Rescuers!! I LOVE that movie!!!
Actually, that mural is still in existence, but it's in an area that is considered "backstage" now --- only Cast Members get to see it. But it is still very much appreciated and loved!

I have 26 photos from when I was a kid in Disney World on my website.
You can see them HERE (http://www.cassworld.ca/childhood.htm)
I just recently found slides from my first trip in 1975, I will scan them and post them later today.
I also found slides purchased by my parents from the 70's which had official photos from around the world on them. I will try to scan them in the next few days or so, there's a lot of them and my scanner only takes 2 at a time :sad2:
Love your pictures! WOW!:goodvibes :dance3:

The Orange wall was the construction wall around the Star-Jets as the Wedway People mover was being built. Space Mountain is behind the Star-Jets...just not visible in this picture.

When I get enough posts, I'll have to scan my pics from 1972.
I inherited my parents' photo albums upon their deaths and the thing that surprises me is how many more photos we take these days (esp with digital cameras) than we took then. I can remember my father being especially parsimonious about taking pics because they cost so much to develop, in his opinion. But I think that they are really priceless and that more is better!

Can't wait to see your '72 pix. And, you are indeed correct about how digital has affected how and what we photograph. If I took two 36 exposure rolls to WDW back in "the day", that was a lot of film. Last July, I shot 2K+ in six days in the parks, and took pix of lots of subjects that I would *never* have even considered photographing in film days (like a pic of a paper cup with Mickey's image on it, for example).
Get that post count up there so you can add your archival stuff to this thread!

My dad tells me that he took at least 40 rolls of slide film on two trips we took in the 70's. I was surprised to hear that, but he loves Disney, and those trips were big splurges for us. I haven't found the time to go through all those slides, but I hope to get to them someday soon.

FWIW, and I have mentioned this before, so forgive me for repeating myself, but I have found that a quick, down and dirty method of "converting" slides to digital, is to simply project them onto a flat white surface and photograph the projected image with a tripod mounted digital camera. All the old '70's images I have posted on this thread were done using that high-tech method!

You're forgiven. ;) I recall you mentioning that on the photo board, but it didn't really sink in at the time. I will probably give that a shot. Thanks for the tip! Sounds like it will be much less time consuming than scanning them, and from the scans I've seen, unless you have a pretty high end scanner (we don't!) you won't get much better results with that method.

I have an old-ish Acer scanner w/transparency capability that will run only under my old Win98 Dell. It's very slow and the scans are decidedly of less quality than my project-and-capture method. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but it makes sense to me that a camera capturing a large projected image will record more detail than a scanner scanning a tiny piece of film. Anyway, that has been my experience, and the ability to PP the image has, in most cases, resulted in a better quality end product than the original, due to color correction, etc.
If you have or have access to a slide projector, give it a shot. It costs nearly nothing (5 bucks for the foam core) and within ten minutes you can determine if the results are acceptable for your purposes. I was truly shocked as to how good the captures were, and any desire I had for a film scanner was immediately quenched.

I believe it was called the Tomorrowland Terrace. My dad used to take us there first thing just about every trip back in the 70's and early 80's. I knew I had arrived at Disney when I saw that band rise out of the floor. Disney magic!
Here is a TERRIBLE shot of the entertainment at Cosmic Rays, although I'm not sure it was called that at the time:

If I recall correctly, the stage came up out of the floor, although that has been a *long* time, and my memory is not what it once was.

ONLY SEVEN MORE SLEEPS til the BCV!
You know, I've heard you can still use those old tickets. Why don't you give it a try and let us know how it goes! I remember when they did away with the individual ride tickets. We were just stunned!! I remember how excited my brother and I were that we could go on EVERY ride!!!!

Well, technically you can...but you don't want to.
I have some old tickets, so I went to Guest Relations and asked if they'd still be honored. If you have an old Magic Kingdom Admission Ticket, Disney will exchange that for a one-day, one-park ticket. Individual Attraction Tickets (A-B-C-D-E) will be exchanged for face-value credit towards the purchace of admission media (IIRC, it's something like $0.75 for an E-Ticket).
You'd do much better selling them off on eBay to Disneyana collectors.

Epcot from the monorail
The first photo is France at Epcot.
The one labled Epcot from the Monorail is actually Epcot from the World of Motion. You used to go outside the attraction on an incline and then back into the building. You can see monorail track between the photographer and SSE.
Great pics!

And we kids who were in WDW at that time did not wear life vests on the Swan boats:

Or get scared by a Marilyn Manson-ish Eeyore:

or giant tortoises roaming on Discovery Island:

OK, maybe we did (that's me crying ... I must have not wanted to leave ... yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it):
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/angey77/DiscoveryIsland.jpg
But we sucked it up! We wore our tickets proudly before heading out from TTA (nice outfit, dad):

To start off, pictures that AMAZE me today:
Seven Seas Lagoon (you can see the Poly way in the back)

Now, I think the name of the character meal boat was the Empress Lily (?). I'm pretty positive it is now Fulton's and was in the same spot it is in now. If so, welcome to DTD!

Angey - wow! Awesome to see those! I keep meaning to do that with mine, but so far I've only managed to get a few up. And like you I'm relying on what mom and dad took which aren't always the best shots! I love the Swan Boats - can't believe I don't remember them since we were then in 78 and 79 (when I was 12 and 13), but I don't! I also remember eating on the Empress Lily (I think!), but am not sure if that's what later became Fulton's or not!
I remember when those water sprites/mouses? were the coolest thing around! And I love the "Tencennial" sign in front of the train station! I was also going to post a pic with those pin on badges. That was in 79 (for us). Did your dad work for GM or were they widely available then (or for other companies)? I know when we went in 78 we had the A-E tickets, but when we went back in 79 most people still had to use them. They had some special promotion for GM employees where we got to wear those badges and ride EVERYTHING. I remember feeling so special as we watched other folks dealing with pulling out the little tickets while we just strolled on! My next trip back wasn't until 82 for the Epcot opening and I know by then everyone just paid once price but am not sure how the switchover worked.
Thanks for sharing!

I absolutely ADORE the pictures with boys in white tube socks with the colored stripes around the top, pulled up to their knees!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
this is the BEST thread on the Dis! My mom used to dress me in those one piece terry rompers when I was teeny...old navy is selling them this season and my 8 year old step daughter went CRAZY when she saw them, had to have one in every color. Fashion is rolling backwards!! But NO tube socks!!!:rotfl2:

My dad didn't work for GM, but who knows if the people with us did. If you look at the pic of us at TTA, there are a bunch of other girls with us. My parents met their parents at a rest station on the way to WDW. Didn't know them from Adam, but we spent our entire vacation with them!
I have a bunch more pics to come. I actually had scanned in all the photos of all our WDW trips througout the years with intentions of making a personal Web site with them all. That was put on hold one year ago when I started working with a Web site for a living.
