This is waaaaay before I met DH Joe back in '80 or '81 .He had a lot less pounds and a lot more hair back then!!! :earboy2:

Here's me back in 1980, same spot as your husband. It looks like I'm holding my favorite, a pretzel, in my hand.

and here's my girls back in 2000

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/Thorgersen/girlsmanacles001.jpg

Here's me with Pooh..Not my favorite character, At All, but back then it was a rareity to see characters at all!
I also appreciate the lines that are formed for visiting with characters now. As you can see from this photo, and many of the others in this thread, you had to almost fight to get a photo of yourself, alone, with a character.
Am I correct in saying that the characters did not make that many appearances back then? That's what I remember, and my husband remembers that as well...

DH trying to get a photo with Chip/Dale(forgive my ignorance, even after all these years!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/Thorgersen/Eddie19802001.jpg

I agree, I love seeing all the old photos !
BTW, I remember seeing Pluto and the other characters with that Space Age-ie attire. I went back in 1983 & 1985.
I'm going up to my dad's house this weekend and I'll ask him to look through his boxes of phots.

Keep it up!

I LOVE your picture's from the 1976 parade....interesting characters in the parade. Was the turkey always in it or was that Thanksgiving time?

Thanks. It is very likely that it was during Thanksgiving because people is wearing warm clothing.

Ok - I've finally managed to locate (free!) some of my old pictures from my parents' house!

Here's the original Captain Jack Sparrow! This was the ONLY time that we were growing up where my parents took a "cool" picture! I think it's around 1985 or so. Where the gift shop of PotC is now, there used to be a Photo area - Here's me (on the right) with my family - 22 years ago! (Love my mom's glasses - although I think they might be coming back in style!)

As for Horizons - It's what Mission:Space was before it was M:S! If you go to www dot wdwmagic dot com and do a search, you will find a lot of info! (Sorry, I cannot get it to post the site directly?!?)

Horizons was a showcase of how the future was going to look like. It was fun and one of my favorites. A family ride

My BIL's best friend works at Disney and he told us a while ago to listen at certain parts...This one part had an African-American guy astronaut and a white woman astronaut and if you listened very closely....... :smooth:
but by the time we got back down there, they closed it!
BTW, that was another ride in which I enjoyed a lil' nappy (even when I was younger!)

I bet that if they re-opened a dress up picture spot like this with the NEW CPT. Jack Sparrow (not to mention Will & Elizabeth Turner) that there would be a longer line for this that for POTC itself! I sure wouldnt mind taking picks with a Cpt Sparrow look alike ( Probably the closest I'll ever get to J. Depp in my whole life!) lol

I remember back in 1976, when DD was a year old and in a stroller, that the Characters used to "roam" freely with no handlers! Pluto came to DD and picked her out of the stroller and promptly got knocked over by over-zealous parents and kids wanting their picture taken!!!! Security came out of no-where and got dd and Pluto upright! Was a scary moment. Now, I don't mind standing in those lines to see the characters!!! :rotfl: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Here's a Mickey from the 80s! (Probably 1985, but I'm not sure!) Is that a Captain EO outfit? Or is it just for Epcot?!?

Here's a pic that I think Minnie would like to forget! Notice the Make-Up!!! She goes from my Mickey from a couple pics back.

The thing that I remember most about Captain EO was that it sent smoke into the crowd at one point & I just thought that was the best thing Ever! I've been tempted to purchase a Captain EO Video on the 'bay just for the memories!

Several people have pointed out the changes in the characters' appearance over the years. The Big 5 seem to have remained pretty much unchanged. However, I did notice in a few of the pictures in this topic that Mickey's ears seem to be bigger than they are today. Here are a few examples that I picked out from previous pages:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/uploads/1406/mick_min_big_ears.jpg http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/uploads/1406/mm_big_ears.jpg

Does anybody else notice this, or is it just me? I suppose it could just be the angle.

I have a pic like that too.....if I remember correctly they were giving the cars away as part of the 15 years celebration.

[QUOTE=Michele]These are from our Honeymoon Trip in 1987

Not sure the purpose of this clock, although the 15's probably tie in with Celebration, but why is there a car at the MK entrance?

Don Pacho...World of Motion....awww I loved that ride. The Early 80 first picture of Epcot...wow look how small all the trees were!

I love the couple pictures of the Pirate photo op....those are really cute. I wish they still had something like that.

I do think Mickey's ears use to be BIGGER.

I went through my pictures but have't gotten any scanned. But I do have one of Snoring Man at Legoland.

Parade in MK- looks like it was the 15th Anniversary Celebration

I don't know why this one made such an impression on me - I had been to WDW dozens of times before it & hundreds of times since it, but I still sing the song from that parade, "15 years, & we're having a party. 15 years, & there's a party going on. 15 years, ........." every single time we go into the parks (weekly or bi-weekly) & it still makes me happy! Thanks for these pictures. (I have a ton, also, but I'm glad I don't have to dig them out. ;))

Have loved all these pics. I actually have one from our first trip to Disney in Aug 1972 at work to show frineds. Wish I could scan it.

the cars at MK was because they gave a car away each day for the 15th bday.

I loved the candy castle myself. That was DS#1's 1st trip to Disney.

Don't remember the train station.

Miss 20,000 Leages. Lines are not the way they used to be that is certain. So glad for fastpasses.

Miss the skyride, too.

Can anyone tell me what was where Mikey's Toontown was originally?

Keep th e pics coming

I know it was called 'Mickey's Starland' & 'Mickey's Birthdayland' at different times, but I don't which one came first. I remember some type of huge ball-crawl thing, too, where the Barnstormer (roller coaster) is now.

I think it used to be called Duckburg as well. Here is a photo of the Duckburg sign. I believe this is from 1990 but not too sure.

Okay, am I the only dork looking for myself in these old pics?! :)

When someone mentioned a man in yellow socks and white shoes, I was a little afraid I might see my father. :rotfl:

My parents have a bunch of slides from our January 1972 trip. Next time I go home, I'll see if I can scan some.

Looks like Liberty Square to me, facing back toward HM and the group walking toward Frontierland. The building behind and to the right of them is the Hall of Presidents and to the immediate right would be Liberty Tree Tavern.

The picture was taken in Liberty Square. The park was so different back then. We were staying at the Contemporary. There was only the Contemporary or the Polynesian. My brother and I took the monorail to MK and rode the ride "If You Had Wings" over and over again. I think we rode about 12 times in a row. You didn't need a ticket for that ride. Other rides required different tickets.

I loved each and every one of these. My 1st trip was in 1982 I was 10 at the time, and soooo many of your 80's pics bring back memories. Pink terry cloth rompers - had one - wore it! Long briimed hat - ditto! 20,000 leagues under the sea! I loved it, but I have a vague recollection of barely fitting in it at 10, and I rode it with my 6'4" father! ...and I absolutely adored Figment! I think I rode that ride again and again. Great pics! I love that orange bird and he use to be on all the OJ cups at the Florida Welcome Center! Ever since I was a kid I couldn't wait to hit the Florida stateline and get that free OJ with the cute bird on the cup. We visited WDW several times a year since we lived in Daytona Beach. I have TONS of fonds memories, and photos...but all of the photos are at my Mom's house now. I'll have to see if I can dig them up.

I did notice that there are hardly any "overweight kids" in these pictures....is it because we were actually forced to walk instead of using strollers??? No flames, just noticing...

I only got as far as page 10 so far, but wanted to post my observations..go back and look at those first 10 pages of pics and you will see a lot less "water buffalos" We ,Americans, have sure let our bodies fall apart. The next interesting thing is people are wearing clothes. Their bodies are in better shape, and they still have the decency not to wear clothes(or bikinis or halter tops) or other variety of clothes that let the good times roll out.
It often surprises me what we now feel ok about doing amongst other people..absolutely no respect for ourselves or others.

I also was very thrilled to see the skyway..I remember that from my only childhood trip and really wish they had it still.

You sure got that right!! Everytime we go we get to see 'beachwear' (inappropriately) passing(?) for clothing.

These pictures are terrific. One of these days I'll have to dig some out. I just had them out last month & buried the boxes in a closet & my neck doesn't feel like going back for them again.

I may have to disagree with you. I think what men use to wear was way to revealing! Those short "hot pant" shorts...haha! :rotfl2: No one needs or want to see all that...haha!! :rotfl: I don't want to see that much of any man! I'm glad that has changed!! I can't imaging seeing men in those getting in and out of rides....haha!! Woah!! :rotfl2:

I started this thread last May and I'm amazed of the pictures that have been shared over the years. I see there are many pictures of the skyway. What year did they get rid of the skyway? I've noticed alot of parks that use to have skyway rides no longer have them. I think it's such a good relaxing ride. I'm wondering why Disney got rid of it.

I heard that a CM fell to their death. Even though it is tragic, I too miss it, and wish that they would put it back.

Glad to see this thread resurface! I hope to get a scanner soon so I can contribute!

This is the second floor of the Journey into Imagination pavilion - my DSis and I have a pic of us with the old Dreamfinder and Figment up there. [I'll have to find them and scan them in]

And someone way upthread mention the awesome stage they had at the Tomorrowland Terrace - I remember seeing a Miami Sound Machine knock-off band called "Tobasco" there in the early/mid 1980's.

Not sure the purpose of this clock, although the 15's probably tie in with Celebration, but why is there a car at the MK entrance?

I've got more from trip in 1978, but have to go to mom's house to get them.

Every 15 seconds, someone entering the park won a prize. The car is one of the prizes. My brother won a one day pass that we still have!

the pack rat's family gene is alive and well on this site......

i can't believe someone else has kept that "life magazine" all
these years...we saw one at the pop 04, but it wasn't in very
good shape...

isn't it interesting how some things stick to your memory? i think,
because it was broadcasted in the media..i can remember exactly
what i was doing on the day it opened...cutting grass...thinking,
those lucky dogs & closer but not close enough for us to go...

i saved the post cards from the 70's...one roll of film was more than
enough for our 80's & the 90's visits ..funny thing...in one, the riverboat
from disneyland was transferred onto the picture beside wdw's haunted
mansion...i have no idea the reason why.

and if the truth be told, we knew "disney world" was a memory we desired
for our children....however, i cannot tell what that meant....except i feel it
was related to the "wonderful world of disney".... i was always disappointed
with the shows instead of cartoons...while the first i ever saw at the movies,
was right before christmas..."pinocchio"..i thought the blue fairy was one
groovy chick...but the "donkey scene" ..gave me the :scared1: ! & monstro
seemed to have been after me...maybe it stuck because it was the same
christmas i received a banna bike.completed with a varoom motor...:cloud9:

of course..most here probably never heard of a varoom motors or the
orginal banna bikes? :hourglass ...there was a "time", when i toooo :hippie:

thought 30 was over the hill..now it's a youngster! geeks o' peeks!

BTW, the "other hotel" that was open before Epcot opened was what is now Shades of Green. It was originally called the Disney Golf Resort (1973-1985), then called the Disney Inn (1986-1993). The military took it over in 1994.

The "vacation villas" over at what is now Saratoga Springs were also open at that time. These included the famously odd "treehouse villas". The villas were built in the mid-1970's.

I kind of like how the character greets used to be - I think it looks like all of the kids are playing with Mickey - but I can only imagine the nightmare it woud be like today.

Maybe my BF can get his pictures from his mom's house - the last (and only) time he went to WDW was right after Epcot opened. He had no idea there were 4 parks now!

I wish I had a scanner (the one I have isnt compatible with my laptop) I have tons of old pics. I also have a Reader's Digest from the 60's about WDW. One of my coworkers found a bunch of boxes of old old issues and I just happened to pick that one to read through. . there had to be hundreds of issues, and I only grabbed a few and this was in it. Pretty cool to read about WDW before it was built. I haven't pulled it out in a few years, but I *think* it was right after Walt passed away. Has the artist renderings of Epcot and everything. Maybe I'll see if I can take a close picture or something til I get access to a scanner.

Oh and keep posting pics! They're great!! I keep hoping for an old Diamond Horseshoe pic. . my great uncle played fiddle in the 70's, and we have NO pictures of him working (even though we visited him yearly)

I scanned in over 600 photographs and memorabilia items in the past 5 days.

My first family trip was 1990 so I'll start posting some from then!

We had our character breakfast at the Empress Lilly, named after Walt's wife (Fulton's Crab House now). Chef Mickey's was also in Downtown Disney at that time. Note the name at the top of the first picture.

We had just arrived in WDW on our very first trip, went straight to the MK and almost the first thing we ever saw was this parade! What a magical beginning!

Notice in the photo of your DS with the Bart shirt on, that another boy in the background also has a Bart shirt on. 1990 was the height of the Simpsons popularity. Who did not have a "Don't have a cow, man" T-shirt?

Thanks for sharing. Keep putting up more please.

Not only did he have that t-shirt and many more but a set of Simpson family figures picked up at a yard sale. He fussed so much for them (for $2.00 I think) that he wouldn't go to swim lessons unless I let him buy them with his own money! Now he has the dvds to play at school. His generation grew up on them I think! We have a teacher here at school who thinks that almost every lesson in life can be illustrated with a Simpson video (and would show them if he could get around our strict media viewing guidelines!)

You may be sorry for encouraging me! I have more memorabilia from 1990 and some pictures from 1992 and 1994 and and and............

If only I could find my 1979 stuff.

I've only just begun to post.... Oops sorta stole that!

Kathy, these are some fantastic pictures!! I actually have some pictures of my brother next to one of the turtles (Donatello, I think?) waiting to get an autograph, us in front of "The Lineup" display, and a picture of April waving from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles yellow van.

I went to EPCOT on the 1st and saw the "Leave a Legacy" exhibit for the first time - I do not remember seeing it back in '96 - maybe I just don't remember?

What you all said about the Simpsons are true! Hehe, me and my brother grew up watching them. :)

I can't believe you scanned 600+ pictures in that amount of time.....wow!

Iris - DS and I went with some of his friends to see the TMNT in person at some arena and he was in heaven! And now he has a poster 6 feet long and 3 feet high showing all the Simpson characters; it decorates a wall in his townhouse at school. Since I scrapbook I still have our receipt for "Leave a Legacy" which cost us the amount shown below.

Yup! We're over in Montgomery County but I'm married to a "native Batimor......." you can finish that nickname I'm sure! Definitely buy a scanner, especially if you have older items and pre-digital pictures. I am having so much fun reliving the trips by scanning in the pics and the park memorabilia.

That's when Minnie Moo actually LIVED in the Magic Kingdom! I think that's when Mickey's Toontown Fair was called Mickey's Starland. Minnie Moo lived at Grandma Duck's Farm. Minnie Moo moved to Fort Wilderness around 1996 and went to the big pasture in the sky in 2001 at the ripe old age of 15!::MinnieMo

One more, kind of blurry. This one is of my mom and me after getting soaked on Tom Sawyer's island. We were in the cave, but as people started pouring in she got claustrophobic and ran out into the rain. Of course, I followed.:goodvibes

My dad has a fancy new printer that will convert the slides, so I had him put them on a CD for me. If you don't have one of those Walmart can convert slides and I am sure any other photo place.

Our2Girls&Disney - Did Goofy give your DH any problems with the Universal shirt?

Love you in front of the fountain in FW. There's almost no one around!

I have a close-up of that same forecourt castle stage. I'll post it later.

Thanks for sharing!

But can't find any photos just other stuff so I'll post a little memorabilia from my very first visit in 1979.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e240/mallonek/WDW%2079/Untitled-010ed.jpg

My ticket book was $1 less than the list price because I was traveling as a chaperone with a group at the time. And of course, I don't have any "E", "D" or "C" tickets left to show here but you can see what I probably used them on!

Let's keep this thread on Page 1!

these are the only ones i could find that i had scanned in my computer. the first one is in 1987 at sea world - yeah, i know...breaking the rules! but still thought you guys might like to see it. i'm 11, my sister was 4 (in the back of the stroller having a hard day) and my brother was only 1. not sure how old my stepmom was! check out my lil brother's air jordan nikes! and i LOVE the permed hair!

these two are from our 1992 trip....the last time i was there!!! i'm 15, my sister is 8 and my brother is 5. my dad's the dorky guy in the back with sunglasses! both these were taken at epcot...mexico and france, i think.

Oh, this must be the parade from when Full House went to WDW. I just saw it again the other night. They had giant inflatables, and Stephanie and Michelle rode on the float with Cinderella and Snow White as princesses. It did seem pretty strange!

ETA: I tried to stick the Cinderella/Snow White picture back in the quote, but it only put it in as a link. :(

This parade is LEGEND in my family. My mom and aunt burned their butts while sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the parade. Hysterical. . . their butts were bright red for weeks! Looked like a sunburn! Still harrass them to this day.
