This weekend the whole family got together to do our Disney shirts for our trip in June. We did 3 different ones. 2 that Kate designed for us! (THANK YOU KATE) and we did the Family Fun Solar shirts and they turned out AWESOME!!!!! I was sooo impressed with them. The only thing...let the water/flour mixture dry COMPLETELY!!! Longer then you think necessary. We had some color bleed under and will have to fix them. Also got fabric spray paint at Hobby Lobby. It was totally cool and easy. They sale it to tye-dye shirts but we just used it like spray paint. I will post pics as soon as I get some and figure out how to put them on here.

I just bought the materials for this project today. I can't wait until it warms up a little more here in Ohio and I have a weekend free after finals. :cool1: What else am I supposed to do until September??? Will it ever get here?

Glad they turned out great!! Did you do the sun pattern or something else?
Last month, I made the shirts from Family Fun, but I made them into a Mickey Swirl head....I copied it from someone on the board, "nkjzmom". She listed the directions & posted pics of them. Mine came out exactly like hers & I made 2 matching sets for our family to wear during our trip this month.
They were so easy!!! It was just a pain peeling off the dried flour/water mixture.

Ok I finished mine this weekend. If I can figure out how to do it, I will post a pic on here once it is dry. I used the Mickey swirl head idea but instead of spray-painting it, I used a brush and painted around the swirl and design with Tulip glitter paint in lime green, turquoise, and gold. It was a lot of fun except the flour/water mixture basically had to be chiseled off. I wondered if I had made the mixture wrong. I was surprised it came out as good as it did.

No, I don't think you made it wrong. Mine was almost impossible to get off as well. But the shirts do look great!!

I'm looking forward to making some of these shirts, but have a question. If it is almost "impossible" to remove the flour mixture from the shirts, what are you using to remove it with?? Do I need a chisel or a butter knife?
Has anyone washed these after completing the design?? How did they come out. Also, should I wash my new shirts before making them or just do the design and wash afterwards.
Thanks for the ideas!!

Hi! Here are my answers...
1) I caught DH using a knife to scrape off the hardened mixture & told hime "No knives on my beautiful shirts!" I just used my fingernails (they are somewhat long) & did all the shirts while watching t.v.
2) about washing them....I washed the shirts first to hopefully get any shrinkage over with. Then I did the designs. They came out looking so good that I was afraid to wash them before our trip in case that ruined the look. I asked another DISer who made the shirts what she did & she said that after designing them, she did not wash them before their trip - they just wore them. So that's what I did.
Believe it or not....we returned from Disney on May 21st & those are the only clothes from our trip that I haven't washed. They are still sitting on the dryer waiting. I guess I'm afraid to wash them & see what will happen, although the other DISer told me that after she did wash them, they still looked good, only softer.
Maybe I'll try tonight.
Good luck - let me know how they turn out. :goodvibes

Did you wash the shirts? How did they turn out? I am wondering so I know if I should wash before we leave. If they are softer but still fine, I would like to wash them. I am afraid also. Please post if you washed them. Thanks.

Hi!
Yes, I did wash them...inside out. I can't remember if I used the "gentle cycle" or normal. Sorry.
They are softer & washing them did not bother the paint one bit. It just made the shirts & the paint softer. The shirts look the same. I will ask DH tonite if he can take a pic. using the digital camera. I have no idea how to use it. We've also never posted pictures before, but DH should be able to figure it out. I'll try to get him to do it tonight.

I made some of these shirts last weekend.
I had no problem peeling the four/water mixture off the shirts.
I used the tie dye fabric spray from Hobby Lobby. I made the swirl Mickey design on them. They came out great! But I had no problem getting the flour mixture off. It took me a while because it kept breaking, but it was pretty easy to peel off.
We are going to make up a batch of shirts for our Dec trip. I am going to make one with Stitch and one with a Castle on it. I will try to post when I have them done.

I will try to have my hubby help me post a pic of the ones I made soon. Daisy, your shirts look great. BTW, I washed mine first before doing the design and I have already washed the recent ones that I did. I had fears that the design would come off in the wash but it came out just fine. I noticed on the package of paint to not use fabric softener when you wash so I didn't. I put it on the gentle cycle and hung it up to dry. :thumbsup2

Well, my boys and I made these shirts over the past two days, and learned an important lesson, that I will now pass on.
In order to save money, I didn't buy spray on paint. We were making the mickey tie dyed shirts too, so, I used the extra dye, and we just squirted it on.
I *think* this was too much dye. we didn't get white, when we peeled away. It was a brighter color of what we died it. You have to sort of squint to see the mickey. The kids are still happy though, so, not a total loss.
So, for everyone else, pay the extra couple of bucks to get spray on paint.

I made these shirts for the family (except dh who now regrets now having one) for our last trip in Dec.
They have washed well and we've worn them again.
I can't wait till our next trip when I can make more :teeth:
I'll post pictures later this afternoon, ds's upcoming kindergarten teacher is coming for a home visit!

PrincessLexi,
I used Tulip Glitter Fabric Paint. I sqeezed on the flour/water mixture in the shape of Mickey like everyone else and then instead of spray painting I took a cheap paintbrush and some fabric paint and painted around the design. I washed it after 72 hours and none of the glitter came off.

Well, last night, while laying in bed, I came up with a brilliant idea to fix the mistake I had caused by using tie dye, rather than spray paint.
Again, rather than using spray on paint, I just squirted, out of squeeze bottles, dye. I think it was just too much dye, and it basically ran under the flour/water hard design. What was there when we peeled off the swirls, was just a slightly different shade of our main color.
Last night, I went over the swirls with a clorox bleach pen. Now, they look like they should! I let it dry over night.
The kids were thrilled when they wolk up and they saw them.

DS and I were going to make these solar shirts last year after I saw them in FamilyFun magazine, but we never got around to doing them. Has anyone ever made any design other than a Mickey head? I know they had a sun in the magazine, which looked kinda cool. DS wants to make one, but he's not sure what design to do. Anyone have any ideas?

I bet you could make a silouette of any favorite character. Draw it on paper to see if a swirly inside makes a Pooh still look like a Pooh, or whoever you want it to be. The color of paint could help with the identity also.

I have a question for those of you who have made these shirts.....has anyone ever used a colored shirt rather than white? I bought lime green shirts and was going to use orange/black paint on them as we will be wearing them for the Halloween party. Do you think these would look okay or should I just go and buy white shirts? Opinions appreciated!! Thanks.

I suspect that orange dye on a green shirt would look brown. You can try it and see what you think. Maybe do one and check it out?
If you used orange paint and paint it on with a brush, a couple layers of paint may still look orange however.
But thick paint would be stiffer than a thin layer of paint or dye. Stiff paint tends to crack and not only the paint cracks, but also the shirt so it gets holes in it. But, nothing lasts forever, so have fun making and wearing them!
Whatever you do, let us know!!

I love all these shirts! You people are so clever! I made a set for my 4 kids, and my 6 nieces and nephews for our trip to DL last year. They turned out great, and my kids still love to wear them. The colors haven't faded, and they still look great after too many washes to count.
I'm doing something new with the idea and I hope it works out. My daughter is having an ice cream social for her birthday party, and for goodie bags, I bought some small canvas tote bags. Today I'm doing a design in flour and water paste of ice cream cones on the bags and I'm going to let them dry all day and overnight. Tomorrow, when the party starts the girls are going to spray them any colors they want (I've got about 8 bottles of different colors). We'll let them dry and then peel off the paste (I always use plastic knives to get it off). Then they will fill them with the stuff from the party.
If they turn out, I'll post some pictures.

There used to be a thread in this Forum called "Mickey Swirl Head Shirts" but I guess it's too old now, because it's gone. If you look at Post #22 in this thread, the DISer that made hers has pictures.
If you go to www.familyfun.com & do a search for Solar Shirts, I think the directions should come up. I found them at their website once. Follow the directions exactly, but instead of making a "sun" for the design, make a "Mickey swirl" like the DISer did in post #22 in her pictures.
EDITED TO ADD: Ok, I went to the website & right to the t-shirt area. Right where it says "Solar Flare T-shirt" I clicked on it & you're right...it says "this craft does not exist". I don't see how they could have that...the little girl in the picture is even WEARING the Solar Flare T-shirt!!!
If I have time later tonight, I'll try & come back & post the directions. My kids are the ones wearing the shirts I made on Post #16 of this thread.

I just did this for my daughter's birthday party. Here's how I did it:
I mixed about 1 cup of flour with enough water to make it the consistency of mustard. Whisk it really well and get out as many lumps as possible. Pour it into a squeeze bottle. Slip a piece of cardboard into the T-shirt so it won't leak through. Using the squeeze bottle, make any design you would like on the shirt. Let it dry thoroughly. When dry, spray your design using fabric spray paints. Let dry then peel the flour paste away revealing your design. Let the paint set for at least 24 hours before washing.
This is simple and really cute. My kids love to make these!

Please do, b/c I'm interested in trying this project out. :thumbsup2

If you can't click on the link in post #66, here are the directions.
MATERIALS:
Cardboard
White cotton T-shirt
1 cup of flour
4-cup measuring cup
Squeeze bottle
Fabric spray paint
Spray bottle
1. Cut the cardboard to fit inside the T-shirt (this will keep the fabric paint from bleeding through later). Mix the flour with water (it should be the consistency of mustard) in the measuring cup right before you're going to apply it so it doesn't have a chance to become gluey and difficult to use. Pour the mixture into the squeeze bottle and then use it to draw a sun pattern on the T-shirt. Let it bake in the hot sun for a couple of hours until hardened.
2. Spray the shirt with the fabric paint (we used Tulip brand) and let it dry in the sun.
3. Remove the cardboard, then have your child peel off the flour paste to reveal her summery design. Wash the T-shirt according to the paint manufacturer's directions.

Has anyone ever tried making this with dye from the tie-dye kits? Just wondering since I have so much left over.
The problem I could see would be keeping the dye wet on the material to set it for the 8-12 hr, without 'melting' the flour mixture.
Any thoughts, Oh Great Creative Gurus?

Peeling the dried flour off wasn't time consuming...it was pretty fast and easy in itself. On that note, we peeled it and didn't try washing.

Hi! I'm one of the previous posters from last August.
I made these shirts last spring & my family wore them in May.
They came out looking great!
For me, the flour was time consuming to "chip off".
No, I didn't consider putting the shirts in the washing machine to let the machine wash off the dried flour....I probably would have had a mess of flour mixture thruout my wash.
**If you look at Post #16 of this thread, you'll see a pic. of my kids in the shirts...just give the picture a moment to load.

I haven't done the shirts yet, have been meaning to for about 2 years. I was thinking maybe if you peel off the flour stuff before it gets really dry and brittle it might work better. Just an idea.

I think I will try it on a shirt to see if it will work. My girls have alot of old shirts that have seen better days. I figured it can't hurt...lol Aslo I know some people have tried dying them with it. By splashing it on. Did anyone ever think to put it in a spray bottle? I do alot more puffy paint shirts then tie dye but I figured I would ask

Well I am making my first ones today. I have a bag drying as we speak. The tip that design_mom said on the other thread about putting little bits of flour into warm water and mixing it in slowly definately works! I went ahead and put all my tshirts in the wash and when the kids are gone this afternoon going to put my flour mixture on to dry. :)

I used spray-on fabric dye and it worked great. I bought three bottles (three colors) but I think you could do a bazillion of these shirts with just one bottle. It doesn't take much.

How long did you guys wait between putting the flour mixture on your shirt and spraying them with the paint? I just put the swirls on a set of four shirts we are going out to dinner. I am wondering if late this evening I can spray them? I am going to try and get some shirts done tonight so I will probably be up late. Have limited time since the kids finally just let with my ex (supposed to be here this morning but that is another story) and will be back tomorrow afternoon. Wondering if I should just put the flour mixture on today and hope for another day between now and then that the kis are gone to do the spray paint? Suprise trip so they cannot be here when I am making shirts.

You want the flour mixture to be *completely* dry before you spray the paint on. If they're sitting in the sun that might not take long -- but mine needed about 15 hours on my dining room table.
The painting literally takes about 30 seconds though -- so hopefully you can squeeze that in sometime before your trip. Then it took probably 10 minutes per shirt to pick off the flour stuff... and 20 minutes in the dryer to set the dye (per the instructions on my dye). Then I washed/dried like usual to get any remaining flour/residue off.
Good luck.

Thanks, I kinda figured it would take a while. The flour mixture looks very moist so I am not going to even look at it again till in the morning. I guess I will be putting some of my iron ons together today. At least I have gotten the part that takes a long time done. ;) Looks like I can do the paint while they are in school. :D I keep going back and forth about doing a second set of the shirts tonight.

I used spray-on fabric dye (not paint). It was sold next to the tie-dye kits. I've only washed mine once, but they didn't seem to fade too much. The other nice thing is that the shirt is really soft. It doesn't feel painted. :)

Did you buy this at a craft store or is available at places like Wal-Mart? The ones I did last year were stiff, so something softer would be great!
BTW- I'm stressing out b/c I just found a plain white t-shirt in DD's drawer. I know I must have bought it b/c of these boards, but I can't remember what I had planned for it! I bought mine at Hobby Lobby, but I didn't check Wal-mart. They might have it there, too.
LOL about the plain shirt. My DS had an orange shirt that got a bleach stain on it. Today, while I was spraying my 'solar' shirts, I put a mickey-head shaped piece of paper on it and sprayed around it with red fabric dye. So now it has mickey's head in orange surrounded by a cloud of red. It covered the bleach stain. LOL! Now he'll have two Mickey shirts!

They do have the same thing at Walmart. That is where we got ours I used tye die spray as well. You can also buy the dye packets and add some to a spray bottle and water ... same thing a little cheaper. I agree completely that you can do a LOT of shirts with one bottle.

thanks to everyone who posted their pictures and gave suggestions!
here are our shirts that my 4 y.o.s made (with my help):
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u89/asktriplets/mickeyheadshirts-1.jpg
i really wanted this to a project that THEY created, so here is what i did to maximize their involvement:
-gave them a bowl of flour and bowl of water...let them spoon flour in and mix to get rid of lumps (this was MESSY, but kept them busy for about 20 mins)
-let them pour their flour/water glue into the squeeze bottles (again, messy, but enjoyable). i found little squeeze bottles at Michael's in the "sand art" section. perfect because the tips were covered, so i was able to snip off the ends to make the openings the size i wanted.
-they practiced with the squeeze bottles, but i actually made the swirls on the shirts (i initially made a template by cutting out a mickey head shape and placing the remaining paper over the tshirt, so i was making my design inside the cutout). i did that with one of the shirts, but then realized that, with some practice on paper towels, it looked more "flowing" if i just did it freehand (and i am HORRIBLE at drawing)
-they will be using the flour water mix to decorate some old hand towels here (this way, they can still make mickey heads without risking the shirts!)
-we let them dry overnight. once they got very dry, i noticed a number of small cracks in the swirls when i was moving them (especially the thin ones)...worth noting because some of the paint leaked in through the cracks
-i let the kids pick out their own colors of tulip fabric paint and they used a small sponge brush to blot on the paint. i put paint tape all around the design just in case they dripped or spattered paint anywhere else on the shirt.
-once dry, i let the kids pick off the flour mix (didn't last long...too tedious!) i wonder if i didn't let the paint dry long enough, as some of the thickest paint came off in small rubbery pieces, pulling along the edges of the swirl when i was chipping it off.
oh, i believe it was this thread where someone asked if you could just put the shirts in the wash to get rid of the flour/water mix? i would say no. i wanted to redo to of the designs prior to paint, so i tried scraping off the wet flour mix, thinking i could then rinse it clean...NOT SO! it was a gooey, pilling mess, so i put it in the dryer then had to scrap all the little flour "pills" off with my fingernails...big pain and the shirts now look a bit worn. i was playing around some more last night and wanted to redo another design, and just scraped the DRIED flour swirl off easily (it comes off much easier than the flour mix with the paint)...so i'd say that this project is perfect for kids to do because you can keep "redoing" the design prior to paint until you get what you want!
hope some of this helps!

Well I washed my shirts because I was picking off the flour mixture and it started sprinkling and the dye just started running everywhere (the dye we bought said it did not have to be washed?) Now they are VERY faded ... I guess I am going to retrace them and put some more dye on them. :(

My method:
Buy Elmer's white school glue
I printed out a spiral...put in inside the shirt...traced the design with glue. No lumps...worked VERY VERY easily.
Let dry...I have an impatience issue...I used a hair dryer
Buy Tulip Color Spray
I used one of those paint sponges...and dabbed the colors around the design. No method to it....just whatever turned me on at that moment.
Let dry...
Once again..impatient...used a hairdryer.
Threw the whole darn thing in the washing machine.

I think it'll be fine. I think you want the flour/water mixture to be completely dry anyway. Otherwise the dye/paint can seep underneath.
For what it's worth, I'm making these as favors for my DD's 3rd birthday party. I found cotton/poly blend shirts for the older kids, but couldn't find them locally in toddler sizes, so I bought 98%cotton/3% spandex shirts in toddler sizes. It was *so* much harder to get the stuff off the toddler shirts. Instead of peeling off, the shirt just stretched. Note to self: Don't use spandex-containing shirts for this project! :rolleyes1

My shirts are ugly! I tried the Tulip paint that you just add water to & spray on. Well...last year I had the spray cans that make it easy to add 2 colors, so I assumed I could do the same with this. My light pink shirts that were supposed to have lime green & purple paint on them now just look muddy brown! Yuck! Oh well...guess we'll wear them anyways! At least we'll be unique!
ETA: I washed my shirts & they are now more of a rosy color on the pink shirts. Still not the look I was going for, but much better than the mud look!

This is a really neat idea and will save me bunches of time for our upcoming trip. I have 9 shirts to do from toddler to Pooh sized and will be putting wording on them. I love the idea of putting a pattern under the shirt. SOOO much easier then hand lettering all 9 of them. I will be adding demensional paint later. I do have a question, or 2, or 3, about the glue (instead of flour)
Do we let it dry as you would the flour mixture? Do you peel it off or just throw it in the washer and it just washes off? It wont gum up my washer will it? (it's been forever since I used Elmers, give me a break here..LOL) Should I get the washable kind or just the regular old fashioned white glue.?
OK like that was 4 questions, I am winging it as I go along. LOL
Paint questions now ..HEHEHE
Has anyone used actual spray paint? Like the kind you use to paint furniture, etc. I used it once on a shirt for fun and after washing, it was pretty soft and lasted. I will try it when I can and let you all know if it has any effect on the flour and/or glue stuff. Lord Knows I have spray paint coming out the wazoo around my house.
ZANDY I dont know where I had gotten the directions from but I was going to do a craft for a group I belonged to last summer with bleach.
Kinda like a negative print. Directions..........................
Have a bucket of clean water ready to go VERY IMPORTANT!
*Pick some leaves or other natural objects, ferns are really pretty(avoid poison ivy .lol)
*Lay them out on dark material (jean is great for this)
*Spritz them with straight bleach so that you are spraying over the object and as far out as you want the material to turn (diff color material turns diff shades with bleach--black turns a orangy color, etc, experiment with it)
*let set for just about a minute or 2 (watch the change to get the effect you want---remember--Bleach will continue to change till you wash it, you have to be sort of quick)
*Remove object
*IMMEDIATELY dunk the garment in the water to stop the bleaching --RINSE RINSE RINSE!
*wash the garment as you would any other as soon as you can to set the color you get (if you dont the bleach residue will still eat away where you sprayed it.
I also used some fun foam shapes(custom cut and pre made) and they were great as you could reuse them. Just make sure before laying them on another garment to wash and dry them well. Bleach is a persistant little bugger when it wants to be.
I cant wait to try the solar shirts. Thanks for the help in advance.

Use the regular Elmers. The washable spreads to much. Yes you have to let it dry. It will wash right out when it gets put in the wash. I used Tulip cool color spray for fabric. It worked very well. I just followed the directions for the spray. You can not pick the glue off you do have to wash it. And now it will not hurt the washer. It doesn't take the glue long to dry. Have fun and good luck

Thanks for the info DisneyBorn.
I experimented today with one of my BF's shirts. He was only too happy to donate to science ..LOL..NOT! Eh, told him he will get more as soon as we buy for the actual shirts. He is the only 2X in the bunch so he gets the rest of that pack.
Used regular old spray paint from a can. It works, is a little stiff even after washing and fuzzes a bit. Do the regular spray on fabric paints get fuzzy? I think I will try the acrylic paint I already have to see how that comes out tomorrow. I need to get a small spritz bottle first. I will water it down in diff increments to see how much to do. How thin is the already made kind?
I also tried Aileen's Tacky Glue (tons of that but no Elmers in the house..lol) OH MY GOSH...it works great. I even spread it out a bit (maybe an 1/8 inch thick) to see how it would cover a bigger area. Washed out with no prob.
I cant wait to do this...NOW I just need to decided on the actual wording. LOL

I just completed applying the paste to the 7 shirts and the are baking in the 90+ degree heat here. I used both glue and the flour mixture. I only had enough glue for 3 shirts and didn't want to stop to do get more. I'm not sure which one will turn our better but the glue was way easier to apply. With the flour mixture I kept having to stop for clumps even though I was very careful to get the clumps out before putting it in the bottle. Will post pictures soon- I hope.

Make sure you put the cardboard underneath as you spray. My sister and I didn't have enough cardboard since we were doing 9 shirts and we used trash bags. Also used regular tulip paint and she diluted it with water and we sprayed. It was a mess! It ran everywhere. We redid them and put cardboard underneath each and bought the tulip spray paint. Worked much better!

Thanks for the swirl pattern...I have another question did anyone use the "Simply spray" fabric paint for these shirts or did everyone use the "tulip" spray fabric paint?

Those look like great shirts to make. Has anyone made them on a light-colored fabric like a light grey? I am not a white t-shirt wearing person and neither is my DH. I would think if the color is light enough it should hold up, right?
