I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere so I'm hoping one of you knows. I have an excellent Canon SLR with a good assortment of lenses. Which as you know are expensive. I'm looking into buying a Canon DSLR. What I want to know is, will the lenses I already own fit the DSLR body? If they will it would make a purchase a lot more possible financially as I could just buy a body.

If your current camera is one of the more modern SLRs, you shouldn't have any problem interchanging lenses with a new DSLR. That's what I did. I used my lenses with a Canon Rebel G, then a 7E and now a 10D.

I have not heard of any CANON branded EF lenses not working with any Canon DSLRs. We assume you are talking auto focus DSLR.

But some older Sigma lenses have been known to not work with newer Canon Dslrs. I personally have a Sigma 28mm 1.8 lens that worked fine with my 10D but will not work with the 20D if stepped down(will work wide open).

Thanks, all the lenses are Canon branded. This is good news for me. I may take one or two of them to the camera shop with me and see if they'll let me try them on the demo body.

it depends, Canon lenses ranges from $70 to more than $10,000. So not necessarily expensive. Some of them are actually cheaper than their 3rd party counterparts.

to the best of my nowledge
EF will work on the large format and small format sensor cameras
EF-S lenses will only work with the small format sensor cameras.

What I mean is that I have about $5000 in lenses already. It would certainly be cheaper if I can use those same lenses rather than having to buy a whole new set.

Any of the older Canon EF lenses will work on the newer Canon digital bodies. I have a few of the older EF lenses that work just fine on my 20D. In some instances the older primes produce better quality pictures than the newerlenses on the market (so I keep them), they might just sound like tanks because they don't have USM. (50mm f/1.8 Mark 1 is a great example).

As far as crop factors, I always hate that debate of the calculations. Just get use to what the camera will capture and reprogram your mind... :hippie:

The old EF series should fit on any current Canon DSLR. You'll have a potential choice of 3 sensor sizes though. From normal full sized with a 5D, 1Ds or 1Ds MkII, or the 28.7x19.1 with a 1.3 crop factor in the 1D MkII or the 1D MkIIn; or the 1.6 crop factor in the rest. This might pose an interesting consideration for you. I used to be a Nikon snob from the 80s... and had been out of photography for a decade plus when I rediscovered my passion through digital photography. So, my Nikon equipment was not very current or influential in my consideration of Nikon or Canon DSLRs.

Cheers~!
