Is it safe to drink the tap water in Spain, DS is of on a school trip on Friday and they have been told to brink a refillable drinks bottle, and fill it with tap water before there day trips to save buying bottled water!! I was sure that you shouldn't drink the tap water and would rather him buy a large bottle of water and fill up his bottle. Any advice would be gratefully recieved ( we have only been to spain once and that was years ago and I'm sure we did not drink the tap water even used bottled water for cleaning teeth!!!)

I wouldn't drink tap water, I don't even drink tap water here, it tastes horrible! As for safety it could cause an upset tummy as different to what the body is used to. Brushing teeth will be fine as long as spat out.
I would personally pay the extra for the bottled water to drink.

I haven't been on holiday in Europe for a few years, but then, you were always advised against drinking the water - although locals often did. Make sure she has enough money to buy her own water - just in case. I must admit I don't even drink our own water from the tap - I always drink it filtered through my 'fridge.

The water can give you an upset tummy(going to the toilet a lot) as it has bacteria in that we are not used to. (Our water does also however are bodies are used to it),That why the locals can drink it without getting ill.
I would use bottled water and don't have Ice cubes in drinks. Its not a good i if you get an upset tummy in the heat your could get dehydrated very fast.

It has been a long time since I last went to Spain (so things could have changed), but I was always under the impression that you had to avoid drinking the water and ice cubes. If my child was going away, I would send them with some bottled water ~ just in case :thumbsup2

Thanks for your replies, I think i will tell him to buy bottled water ( a large one and decant it to his drinking bottle - would work out ceaper) as I don't need him to be ill, he has an important swimming gala the weekend after he returns

The tap water is perfectly safe but contains a higher level of flouride than ours so can cause upset tummies, I'd just persuade him to buy juice or bottled water.
