I am very discouraged. I frankly doubt people now who say they went on such & such a diet & lost 10 lbs in the first week/month. That hasn't been my result of the two diets I've been on. Not even losing water weight.
For the last two years , I was on the South Beach Diet because I tend to be hypoglycemic & adult on-set diabetes runs in my family. I wanted to balance my blood sugar levels & KEEP my weight down. A doctor told me that as long as I maintained my then current weight of 115, at 5'4", I'd probably never have to worry about getting adult on-set diabetes.
On the SDB, I ended up gaining 12 lbs :furious: It is hard to stick to the program as prescribed. When I could not find lean proteins, (there aren't many in my local supermarkets,) I figured any protein is better than none. And when I would binge on sugar, sugar was like crack cocaine to me. :sad2: No one tells you about that down side. The cravings you get from having a little, after having had none, are more intense than being allowed to have some sugar now & again. Plus, I never agreed with substituting artificial sugars for real sugars in treats.
The ONLY good thing I got from SBD is to make sure I eat a protein with every sugar/carb I injest, to make sure I don't spike my glucose levels & blow my pancrease. There is even a recent study that says watching the glycemic index msy not be accurate - which is what I began to suspect. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11616968/
A light bulb went off in my head a couple months ago & I realized, SBD is NOT working for me if I have been gaining weight. I didn't really have a weight problem before SDB, so much as I needed to exercise & tone. Now, an old pair of pants that used to be loose, now wont close by 4".
So I switched to the Weight Watchers points program at the end of March. The one big thing I noticed was how it automatically cut down my portion sizes - especially the proteins. That in itself, may account for the weight I had been gaining. :cheer2: My fat intake is down. And I could have low point/low sugar (not no sugar) treats - as long as I ate them with a protein. This thread: What do you keep in your WW pantry? (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=485818) has given a wealth of low point, yummy treats. :thumbsup2 I rarely go overboard on any binging as I'm allowed to have them (with a protein.) :cheer2: I actually had days where I was close to not eating enough points!
I have been exercising at the gym. In Jan-Feb, I was there 3 times a week. Then I hurt my back in March. :( I didn't get to work out for a full 3 weeks. When I got back into the gym, I could barely do as much of ANYthing I was doing before. That has been quite discouraging. Now, I'm only in the gym 1-2 times per week.
I haven't lost ANY weight, but since I've been exercising & hopefully building muscle mass, I expected that on the scale. I HAVE noticed that my shoulders, upper chest, & arms are much more toned & look pre-weight. I lost an inch & cup size on my bust. I fit into my old bras that had started straining at the elastics.
I heard once that women are like buckets when we gain weight. We fill up from the bottom & hips upwards. Then lose the same way, from top (bust) downwards, last to go is the hips. That seems to be true of me. I wouldn't have minded losing a bra cup size, but I'm not losing ANYTHING in the ONE area I want to be losing: my waist & tummy! :furious:
I am very discouraged. It is really the ONLY area that I want to lose weight the most. If I felt like I was making any headway in that area, I wouldn't mind how long it is taking. :(
Please don't say, losing the last 10-12 lbs is the hardest. That doesn't make sense to me, as how does the body know it's the last 10 lbs?. :confused3 Plus, I ONLY have to lose 12 lbs. Why should that be any different from any other 10 lbs? As far as my body is concerned it has gained weight - & this amount is more than it's ever had. :(
Help! I need words of encouragement. I also fear I'll have that belly flap even after I lose the 12 lbs. taslked about in: Flat Stomach. (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1082146)
