I am at the back door of Johnston County...Wake, actually...so I'm curious how long it took you specifically b/c it sounds like we're not that far away from you. How many times did you stop? Where? (I'm thinking our 1/2 way point is Savannah) And did you have small, recently potty trained children with you that required a few more rest stops? I am thinking we will drive b/c that could be a very memorable experience. Stopping at each state, etc.

BTW, what do you think about your new coach? I'd never heard of him before...

We'll be going from Raleigh in September!! Can't wait. Usually we split it up and stay somewhere around Savannah. Sometimes finding a hotel is difficult unless you reserve ahead of time. The first time we went there was some sort of convention in Jacksonville and all hotels were booked for miles & miles.

SLDL, you can probably count on about a 10 hour drive. More if you take lots of stops; we have driven from further west in the state, but its all about the same. It has taken us as long as 13 hours before, when there were younger bladders involved (kids are now 9 and 6)

Regarding driving, having done it many times, the trip down is never too bad. The trip back seems like it takes forever. We are all worn out and sad to be coming home, therefore kids are a bit more grumpy and restless. On going to FL, it does help to mark the entry into each new state. A nice neighbor of ours once made little treat bags for our kids with things symbolic of each state -NC = apples; SC = peanuts; GA = peaches; FL = oranges; WDW = giant lollipops shaped like a Mickey head. This was such a sweet thing for the neighbor to do; our kids loved those simple paper bags designated for each state. They looked forward to crossing into each new state.

10 hours is not bad. We can do that. We'll probably break it up also. One of the things I thought about is that if we flew, it would probably be on Southwest b/c they are cheaper & nonstop. But, the prices are still high & the flight we'd take is at 6 am from RDU, so we'd have to leave so early anyway!

I can imagine that the return trip seems twice as long!! That will really stink!

:wave2: Hey my fellow NC and especially the Johnstonians! Wow, more of us here than I thought there were!! :yay: I live out here in the forgotten part of the county...near Mudcats Stadium (5 County Stadium, I know).
Anyhoo, last November we drove an RV pulling a golf cart on a trailer all the way down to WDW. It was a LONG ride, as it I was with my DH:donald: (who is more like Donald Duck than you can imagine), my MIL :earseek:, and my DD3 who was SICK as a dog  (we had to make a dr. office visit the morning we were supposed to leave). We left at 10 am from our house, and we were about 2 hours away from WDW that night at 8 pm. We stopped to spend the night in the RV and let the kiddo out of her car seat. We could have gone on to WDW but she was just miserably tired of that car seat. So that was 11 hours in an RV, with my DH driving straight through...we stopped 2 times. To get a lunch and gas up(NC somewhere); then to gas up once again(Ga/SC line) and to let DH have a potty break/leg stretch. Then for the night in FL. With the RV, us girls used the on board potty so that helped out alot. :cheer2:
This November we are driving the SUV so we think, if all goes as planned we will make it down in 10 hours. Hoping to only have to stop a few times for potty breaks and food/fuel. :hourglass
I would advise to take a potty seat with you if you have small children, in case there are some emergency potty breaks needed and you are in between exits with restrooms. I know we are doing that for DD this time.

BTW, what is up with the $$ airfare to Orlando? Getting expensive.

Sidney Lowe is a former NCSU basketball player from the early-80's. He was on the Champoinship team of 83 (or was it 82) -- I was only 6 or 7 years old then. DH is a UNC man, and I am a Dukie -- our daughter is just CONFUSED!! :confused3
She'll make the right choice in the end --> ECU!!!:lmao: (heeheehee, over her daddy's cold dead body heeheehee!) :furious:

Okay, ya'll have a GREAT vacation!!!

We leave about 3:30 am and stop maybe 3 times for bathroom breaks/gas. We get to POP about 12:15-12:30 pm. We get lunch at the hotel then take a nap and up by 6:00 pm then go over the Chef Mickeys or Ohanas for dinner. We don't have any small children so that helps in travel time.

I'm so glad to have Sidney, I think the guys would love to have someone that has played pro-ball plus coached in the pros as well. It can only help us in recruiting. I know everyone on campus is very excited about him coming back. I'm also glad we're getting someone that knows the what the Brickyard and the Free Expression Tunnel is. :cheer2: Don't get me wrong I liked Herb and I enjoyed working with him, but I just think he needed something fresh as well as the Univeristy. GO PACK! :wave2:

Savannah is a great stop, about 5ish hours from WDW. There is a Motel 6 at Richmond Hill that we stayed at. It's a bit on the old side, but was only 39.00 for one night (Sat night). You might be able to get it cheaper during the week. We picked up some coupon books at the SC/GA Welcome Center, and they had coupons for 29.99 a night from Mon-Thurs. It wasn't 5-Star, but it served it's purpose!

I'm from Raleigh - we just got back last night! Left Thursday afternoon, drove to St Mary's/Kingsland GA and spent the night, arrived Fri AM at the park, and drove all the way back yesterday. (Yes, we're crazy - drove all the way just for the weekend!)

I-95 was the worst I've ever seen. It took us 4 1/2 hrs yesterday to get out of FL (should have been a 3 hr trip). Once we crossed the GA line, we didn't have any problems. I did vow never to drive again based on the traffic, but I'll probably forget that vow before our next trip!

We almost always stay in Kingsland on the way down. It's exit #3, just this side of the FL border, and there are several decent hotels there (and gas is usually cheap too). From Raleigh, it's about 6 hrs to Kingsland, and then another 3 hrs from there to Orlando.

And as for NC State, I'm old enough to be really excited about Monte Towe coming back as an assistant coach!

Sounds like many of y'all break the drive into two half-days. We have driven many times but have always done it in one big chunk. We start out in the morning and get to resort before supper time. I know it sounds like we are gypsies, but we have lived in Maiden, Asheville, and now Trinity over the last 6 years. Funny, but the drive is within 15 minutes from all three locales.

I can only rememner getting into a traffic jam one time -that was going thru GA where they were doing all that raod work between Savannah and Brunswick. Guess we've been lucky.

Being a stereotypical dude, my goal is to stop as few times as possible. We hook the kids up with some tapes, games, and books and head down the road as far as we can before stopping. Boy, I wish we could go back to the good ol' days of $86 rt airfare out of Raleigh. :teeth:

Oh, and speaking of Sydney Lowe... I think NCSU made a great hire, if an unconventional one. I am a Carolina fan, but I always admired Lowe and thought he was a fine leader even as a younger man. I am guessing he will recruit as well as anyone could alongside Roy and K.

I have driven straight through both times I drove. Either left early in the morning and arrived after lunch or late at night and arrived in the late morning. I think we will drive during the day this time, so we can stop at South of the Border, and then stop for a few more country stores right off the highway in Georgia and Florida.

Hi there guys and gals. Well I saw this post and just had to check in. I just moved last week from Raleigh to West Palm Beach, FL and I am a tad homesick. Why one would ask. We've driven straight through, stopped in Savannah & stopped at Jekyll Island, GA (not too far from the interstate & a nice fun stop for the kids to get out & play--and a really pretty place). We found Savannah to be a good stopping spot. We stayed at a Motel 6 in Richmond Hill that was less than 40.00 for our family of 4. Nearby there was a Denny's and Cracker Barrel, and lots of gas stations. For us, that's all you can ask for when traveling! :)

We stop in Jacksonville, FL. Going that extra 2 hrs early seems to make an exponential difference on when you arrive in Orlando the next day. I'm in Raleigh (Cane Country). We're driving down on Nov. 27th. We'll 'probably' leave around 7:00 AM...but you know how that goes. I'm a firm believer in "insomnia the night before WDW" though and don't really think this will be a problem. Truth be told, we'll probably leave closer to 6:30! :goodvibes Anyhoo, this is our 1st trip to WDW. Our plan (*ahem*...MY plan) is to leave as early as possible, drive commando-style ('cause we're on a mission after all. Only stopping a couple of times for gas/potty/fast-food), arrive at WDW early-evening (5:00-6:00ish?), check-in at WL, then it's over to the Poly for dinner at 'Ohana at 8:10. I have 160 days before I go! :yay:

We're going in August, the week before our school starts. We live on an island, so it's fun to leave the tourists at my home and go drive slow in someone else's town. Not that i plan on setting foot in my car at Dis, but you get the idea. :)

You live at Oak Island?! That is such a great place. My son's class goes there each fall and the kids have a blast!

Hey! I don't know if its this way all over NC, but I just love these last few days around Raleigh...'Canes flags flying everywhere, people are just in a really good mood! We went to Crabtree Tues. & it was great...merchandise everywhere, flags displayed from the banners, etc. We are certainly an area normally dominated by GREAT basketball which does tend to divide us but when it comes to hockey, it unites us :goodvibes

Oh, speaking of Crabtree, good Disney store sale. Got lots of stuff for our upcoming Disney trip!

For all of you driving down before Sept...or if you have before...I just can't imagine driving the whole way from the Raleigh area in one day w/ 2 kids. Where is a good 1/2 way point?? Savannah? If you have any good (i.e. inexpensive & clean!) hotel suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Also, are there any special places you like to stop for food along the way?

When we went in Jan. we left when DH got home from work. We drove about 4 hrs. to Santee, SC and stayed at the Clark's Inn. It was very, very clean ( must for me) and a great place to stay for a quick night of sleep. We also stopped at the SC Welcome center and got one of those travel books with coupons in it. I think we stayed for like $50. The next day was only about a 6 hr. drive. Which is a lot better than 10 hrs. in one day (which we have done numerous times). We will probably do the same thing when we go in a few months.

Thanks for the advice about Santee, SC. My husband wants to drive straight there but we will be going to the Halloween party the night of our arrival & I don't want everyone to be tired, ill & grouchy! I have finally talked him into breaking up the trip & he is suggesting sleeping in the van at a rest area. I don't even know if that's allowed...I thought there was a time limit. I'd rather have a nice (clean!!!) bed to rest my head & then get up & be refreshed in the morning.

Okay, and on for the sports portion of the NC posts...Anybody keeping up w/ the baseball World Series?!?! GO HEELS!!! I think our state could have a Putt-Putt Championship & we'd win...we're just that good!

We live near Charlotte.

We went down to WDW four times last year with our AP's.

This year we are on a tighter budget with the adoption and it looks like we won't go back for possibly a whole year! So, looking at Sept. of '07. We are hoping for free dining again next year!

We have always driven. It takes 10 hours with small kids and stops from Charlotte. Thank goodness for DVD players in cars these days!

That comes out to $585 w/ taxes for the 5 of us. :Pinkbounc

When we drive, we're in Burlington and Dh has experimented with many different ways, taking I-95, or going through Charlotte, or going through the "Boonies", etc. They always work out about 10 - 11 hours from Burlington. On the way down, we usually stop in Brunswick, Ga. at a Comfort or Days Inn (I believe on New Jessup Hwy). Once we stayed at a Baymont Inn (I believe) it was only $39, but we were not happy with it at all. We had to move from the 1st room because it smelled really bad. The rooms were really small also. Anyway, that leaves about 180 miles left to Orlando, similar to a beach trip for us.

Have you checked with other airlines? The same thing happened to us last year. We were able to fly down Southwest for $39 but had to fly back American for $69, not as good as $39 but not bad either. I got an e-mail the other day that Delta was having a sale also.

We will be flying with a DS9, DD's6 & 1 y/o (14-1/2 mo. to be exact). I plan on sitting with DD's 6 & 1 y/o and taking a portable DVD player. 6 y/o will watch anything so I'm going to put the Wiggles, Pooh or something on that will keep both happy. Our flight is early 7:50 a.m. so I'm hoping DD1 will sleep.

We rode Magical Express last year. When you get off the plane you will look for someone wearing Mickey gloves (at least that's how it was last year) and they will direct you. It took us about 30-45 minutes from getting off plane and onto Mag. Exp. then another 30-45 minutes to get to resort. There is a movie (Disney of course) playing on the bus to keep kids entertained.

I hope this helps.

My DS who is 2 going on 3 keeps asking to go to Disney. So, that means we have to go. ;) So, I'm looking at the Sept 30th weekend since it is the end of the preschool promo and the beginning of Food & Wine.

My husband says, but we went last Oct. I said I'm fine with my son going to Disney every year of his childhood. :rotfl:

With a kid this young I have to fly. We live in Raleigh very near the airport (Stonehenge subdiv.). Nothing beats being in Orlando in 3 hours (total time) vs. 10 hours driving time.

My son watched a travel channel show about Disney, started insisting that we go right then to Disney. I asked if I had to turn off the show, because we weren't going right then, he said yes. He couldn't watch it anymore, he had to be there. Definitely my son!

Oh, from Asheville, I think driving would be okay if you wanted to save money. Wouldn't you have to drive to a lager airport to even get a flight to Orlando? Which then means you have drive AND fly.
I guess the best bet is to wait until the 90- or 60- days before your trip and then check out some travel sites to see if there are any really cheap airfares to MCO.

On another note, how is A-town these days? I went to college at UNCA in the mid to late 90's. I liked the city. Very unique place. I loved going to all the coffee houses and bars. Every one was laid back.

Oh, and we live out by Lake Wheeler South of Raleigh.

We rented a car from Enterprise for the week and they picked us up. It was around $130 for the week. You can get a towncar both ways for around $90. I think ****** was the one we had quoted. We were going to Universal for dinner, so we figured renting a car was worth it.

My son and I rode the Amtrak to Orlando in March and I was not impressed. It was late arriving to pick us up(1 1/2 hours) and then 2-3 hours late getting into Orlando. The Amtrak has to stop for freight trains and pull onto a siding. We waited 15-45 minutes several times on the way there. On the way back, train was late again, we arrived back in Raleigh about 4 hours behind schedule, a train broke down in front of us and we sat for over an hour.

The other thing that bothered me is that at neither the Orlando nor the Raleigh station did they check carryon bags or people for guns, etc. No metal detectors, nothing. Maybe its just me, but that was a little scary.

The coach seats are fine for sitting, but sleeping for adults is almost impossible. If possible, I would get a sleeper.

At the Raleigh station, as you are coming in the station door, the train loads from the door on the RIGHT. They don't tell you this until they call for boarding and we were at the other door. Got there before almost everyone, but because they don't have assigned seats, we were almost split up. We WERE split up from our friends.

If you take Amtrak:

1. Expect and plan for delays.
2. Bring your own pillow and blanket. It gets cold and their pillows are nasty and they CHARGE for blankets
3. Bring your own snacks and drinks. The ones on the train are expensive and the snack car can be a long walk.
4. Bring lots of things to keep the kids entertained.
5. Bring pop-tarts or something for breakfast--the one in the dining card is not that great and big bucks
6. You can bring 2 carryons each onto the train, not including purses, pillows, backpacks. If possible carryon all your luggage, so you can save some time when you arrive in Orlando.
7. Orlando stop is first, but supposedly Kissimmee is nicer(I got off in Orlando, because I was DONE with the train and I was fine there waiting for our rental car)

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. We will NEVER ride the Amtrak again. We are driving down at the end of this month.

Oh, and I believe the ride is SUPPOSED to be 13 hours......Usually end up more like 15, if you add in time it was supposed to pick you up and when it actually arrives

We live right outside Asheville, NC :)

We are trying to determine... is it better / cheaper to fly or drive. I think it would be cheaper to drive, since we'd have to rent a car while there anyway.

What do you all think?

The drive from Asheville ran us about 9 hours. How many people are in your family? If you can't get an excellent rate and there are more than 2 people in your family I would say that driving would be your best bet.

Did you check out Bele Chere last weekend?

It's just going to be me and my soon-to-be husband.

And nope... It was my fiancee's birthday weekend, and he doesn't like festivals.

I would only fly if you can find an excellent deal. The drive is a nice one.

That is my birthday weekend as well. Too many people go to it for my taste.

That's what I figure. If we fly, we are going to have to rent a car, since we want to stay at a Disney resort, but we are going to spend a day at Universal Studios.

I have to leave a comment on the North Carolina post! Driving to Orlando was a HUGE deal for my family when I was a kid. They prepared more for the actual drive then the vacation itself! We always left late at night and got there in the morning. I slept pretty much the whole way and my parents each got about 6 hours of sleep. We would basically check into the hotel and go from there. :sunny:

We are driving down from Dunn(my mom's house) on August 30. Both my mom and I have to work that day, so we will be leaving around 4pm and getting to Disney around 1am. We just have a late day planned for the next day--DisneyQuest and DTD and we'll get a good nights rest that night. The other three days of our trip are jampacked, and then we drive back first thing Labor Day morning.

We have always driven, I keep a log book with milage and time. If we drove non-stop it would have taken us 8 hours which I know we couldn't do. We only stop for gas/restroom stop and one quick drive through. We leave about 3:00-3:15 am and arrive about 12:30 pm at POP, check in, quick lunch and then take a nap until 6:00 pm. Then we're ready to eat at Ohanas about 7:30 pm that night. I have only 84 more days!!

I have been on the Amtrak before, but in the wrong direction--to Washington DC.. Sorry I won't be of much help! But, my mom and I were wondering--how long is the train ride to Orlando?

About 13 hours. You leave Raleigh at 9:15pm and arrive thenext day at 10:15am in Orlando. Essentially sleep in couch overnight. This sort of saves me some time because I was going to drive during the same time, this allows me to sleep as well as my family. Also saves on gas and wear and tear on the vehicle.

Sorry about the slow response.

Sorry so late to this thread. Has anyone taken the train from Raleigh to Orlando/Kissimmee? If so, what did you do for transport from Amtrak to WDW on arrival?

We are going (me, DW, twin DD4) Sept 23rd to 30th and staying at POR, MNSSHP on 9/29. (Anybody doing MNSHHP on that date?) Leaving Raleigh 9:15 pm via Amtrak from the Raleigh station on the 23rd.

Oh, and we live out by Lake Wheeler South of Raleigh.

OMG! We are spittin' distance from you!

Also wanted to say, have you looked at Southwest? YOu can get RDU to MCO for $49 each way. That makes a 1.5 hour trip instead of 12-13 hours? WE looked into taking Amtrak last year, but decided against it. But it looks like you have already booked.

Actually it was down to $39 at one point. The train is still cheaper. Also, my inlaws are planning to take care of our youngest DS (18mths) while we take our twin DD4. If that falls through at the last minute we can cancel the train with no penalty and drive down. Also, the train is an adventure in itself, especially for the kids. Hopefully it will not be too delayed on the weekends.

Hey North Carolinians!! I think it is so interesting that Florida didn't get the brunt of the hurricane (at least I don't think so). Yet we came home to a house w/ no power...it finally came back. I am not expecting it to be on long though. I am so weird...I couldn't get ready for bed until the lights came back on!! And where are we going tomorrow? The beach. Carolina Beach actually. This just eases my anxieties about going to DW in Sept....if a hurricane arises, I'm just as likely to feel it here as I am there!

The DH and I are from Angier, NC. We have driven three times, flown once, actually we've "flown" on every trip :scared1: Lord, the drive back is MUCH worse than the drive down---the DH is a little "impatient" to get home once we hit the road to return.....flying, as in the "friendly skies" is a much better choice for us rather than "flying" on I-95!

That said---I start checking out Delta for a good price well in advance of our trip and the same with car rentals---it is a little more expensive to fly, but when you're anxious to get there---one hour and 42 minutes is a bargain and when you're TIRED and home is 9+ hrs away and the DH  (gotta love him) is driving like a MANIAC it's even more of a bargain :rolleyes1

We normally stop no more than two times---DO NOT DRINK A MOUNTAIN DEW OR COFFEE BEFORE LEAVING HOME....makes the ride feel like you're crawling :moped: and I-95 seem like the Hwy from #$!$*!__!$*@

I live about 35 minutes N or Wilmington and it was certainly bad over here. We finally got power back last night and cable sometime late in the day. I woke up at 2 in the morning and couldn't believe it was so bad. I don't like when we get the hurricanes/storms at night. You hear the noise but its pitch black so you can't see what the noise is! We lost a tree and the shed. For a tropical storm it certainly came in with gusto. I have been watching the news and Carolina Beach area of Wilmington got alot of flooding. My county was on National news with all the flooding. It certainly was a strange storm! We have been through many hurricanes including Bertha and Fran, and others but this one rivaled Floyd in many ways.
Glad things are getting back to normal!

DH & I have been approx. 25 times and we have driven all but once. We got some cheap SW tickets in Oct. '04... DH likes having our car. We also do not have to worry about what we buy, or extra luggage, or rental car expense.

We live in the Northeast corner of NC in Hertford, so it takes between 11 to 13 hours depending on traffic and time of day. Sometimes we leave after work and sometimes 2-3 in the morning.

We used our annual passes at Christmas, so I forsee at least two more trips before Dec. 23rd......... Too bad we do not live closer........
