I've seen many posts stating that the Grand Califorian is the nicest on-site hotel to stay at. So I've got a question, if I can only afford GCA standard view. Is it still more worth it, over a pool/preferred view at DHL?

I think so. It is a very nice hotel!

Absolutely. The standard view will look out the front of the hotel across to the Paradise Pier hotel, A parkinglot and the Disneyland hotel OR you might be assigned a room in the monorail courtyard. The rooms are nice and the convenience of location is worth it...if it is not tough on your wallet.

If I have a choice between a view OF the Disneyland Hotel and a view FROM the Disneyland Hotel....I will choose the latter every time!

(PS: FYI: The front of the GCH faces away from the parks.)

...and I would say "yes" in answer to your question. I had a theme park view, but I commented to my boyfriend that just about any view would have been okay. I will post details in a trip report soon, but suffice it to say that it is VERY worth the $$$ at GC. I loved every bit of it, and I think it is the most "Disney" of the 3, though in subtle ways.
