View Full Version : Poll (again...) on WHO PACKS a PIRATE COSTUME + post your PIRATE photos please!

05-01-2006, 07:54 AM

... the tux poll got me thinking... we can see that DIS enthusiasts are more likely to pack a tux than the avergae DCL patrons. The average for a DIS patron initially being maybe 48% likely versus 10% for non-DIS patron based on eyeballed estimates from DIS folks with an opinion.

But... what about PIRATE COSTUMES? Among our activly posting/voting DIS community members I'd like to try and get an idea of who brings/packs a Pirate costume ... or part of a costume for the cruise? So here is my latest query for your armchair entertainment.

FYI... in the past it seems the average ratio of hits to votes has been 10 hits for every vote on threads with a good general appeal. And for the polls with less general appeal the ratio increases... no surprise there eh?

At any rate, thanks in advance for either your interest or wry humor! Oh yeah... if you're so inclined than please post your FAVORITE image of YOUR PIRATE COSTUME(s)! Here's ONE of mine from Sept 2005!....

Although you can't tell from these images ~ we acccented the weapons and children with several glow sticks for the on deck party. This photo was taken just before dinner w/o glow sticks. Matching costumes that were kindly picked up for us by a thoughtful DIS family we met through the DIS cruise meet! And as a CORRECTION to the question in the poll that makes reference to the free RED DCL bandanas - it seems they have substituted the red ones with glow in the dark print for plain black ones. I missed that.... :confused3

DW and I will be doing nice pirate costumes, like something from Party City or some place like that. She may even make our costumes herself. But, we will definitely be dressing up for Pirate Night. pirate:

We packed full pirate costumes including flags... I also bought a bunch of pirate tattoos and gold coins to pass out to all the kids. They were a big hit!

Here is my DH and son (2) I asked my husband if he would dress up for pirate night... he said no. Then I said, what if your costume was sweats and a tee shirt... he said ok... and Mr. Smee was born. I took house paint and painted the shirt with the stripes and cut sweats of.. Nothing he could say! lol

We love the party but wear tropical shirts for the occasion. Just an FYI our bandannas were black with skull and crossbones in April - we tried to wear these but they kept falling off.

05-01-2006, 05:40 PM
We packed an eye patch and a loop earring and used the supplied bandana as a costume for the kids.

This is what we had packed for our cruise last July.
Here is one of me at the buffet, a Cast Member said that I looked great and asked if she cold take the picture of me by the desserts.

We don't know what the DD's will wear in March, we know they won't fit into these anymore.

Since we are talking pirates here, I flipped over the calendar above my desk this morning and look what the photo on the calendar is, it was so cute I had to take a photo of this. Sorry for the flash glare, but in front of the bear is the bounty he "collected."

This is our assistant server, Teodore, and DD. For pirate night she wore a peasant style blouse, skull jewelry, and a pair of flowing gouchos to complete the look. DD loves pirates, so this was her favorite night on the ship.

We don't get dressed up in full-out pirate costumes, but we did and will wear matching pirate shirts that we copied from someone on the DIS. Enough to get into the festivities, but also not too much for DH and DS to handle! :teeth:

We also had some pirate hats, a sword, and several eye patches for those that wanted to wear them, even though they were not in this picture. Our girls started out wearing the bandanas, but then I guess they took them off after dinner. We loved Pirate night. So much fun!

We will be on the May 21 Wonder. I ordered pirate costumes from buycostumes for my dd8 and ds4. For my dd1, I think we are going to cut up an old pair of jeans, haven't been able to find her a costume. Not sure if my husband and I will dress up.

We took pirate costume's on the cruise last August, but neglected to get one for my granddaughter. One of our friendly "Fools" and her daughter, Thanks Barb and Marissa. gave her one to wear. She is in my signature line.

We had matching T Shirts from Cafepress.com for our 4 night Disney Wonder cruise on 02/26/06 - (they have a fantastic range of pirate t-shirts).

Sorry about the big picture - I'm hopeless at this sort of thing !!

Here are 3 British pirates .........

These are from the June 24 West Coast Cruise last year. DS11 and I made it back to the ship at 5:45 (after the Dolphin encounter in Puerto Vallarta; read my trip report for all about that!) and we just swan dived into our outfits; then got DS5 from the kids club and changed him into his pirate things in the bathroom and made it to Animators by 6:05.

My kids (POTC t-shirts with pirate Mardi Gras beads, bandannas and other accessories:

oo seeing all these photos is getting me in the mood to get my costume ready! I have decided that Im either going as a serving wentch, a sexy female pirate, or (as my friend seggestesd) a parrot.

Hmmm just going through costume sites - has anyone gone as a saloon girl like the ones they are selling on the ride or like elizabeth swann? Does that count?

05-03-2006, 06:20 AM
We don't pack pirate costumes. I know we're in the minority, but we didn't care for the pirate menu or the pirate party. Too crowded, too loud and too congested.

We'll probably plan something else for this night next time.

05-03-2006, 07:32 AM
We bought the $45 dollar  ones on the ship for the kids in our party. That wasn't an option though. They had fun :)

I really LIKE the idea of a Pirate Parrot costume! :lmao: Here's what I found in support of the idea....

1st. A link to a web page describing how to make such a thing. http://fun.familyeducation.com/halloween-costume/halloween/35492.html

2nd. Here;s one you can buy for $79 ... or copy the design on a home spun budget. http://www.partyamericastore.com/full-body-parrot.html http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/partyamerica_1891_14517959

3rd. These are ready made Parrot costumes.... they cost just over $1000 each! This may be an "over the top" option.... http://www.akrondesign.com/Mascots/marylens/mascots/birds3.html http://www.akrondesign.com/Mascots/marylens/birds3.jpg

4th. You might just RENT a parrot costume .... one example here from a place in Ohio charges $45/65 and it looks like this: http://www.akrondesign.com/Frames&Framesets/AnLeft.html
http://www.akrondesign.com/Animal%26Fruit/Anim%26FruitResources/Parrot.jpg http://www.akrondesign.com/Animal%26Fruit/Anim&FruitResources/parrot-2.jpg

Of course, you'll still have to spiff it up as a PIRATE parrot - and probably hang on to some guys' shoulder most of the time. It may be complicated... but everyone on the DIS will be posting you pix and talking about it you years to come. Cheap notariety for under a C note! :confused3

05-03-2006, 03:22 PM
I'm not sure if these qualify as "elaborate" or not but we have worn these on two cruises and will on our DVC cruise in Oct!

YOu guys look so great! And just for the record, I love your wife with the red hair!

Hello ...

... here's a mid-point update on the stats.... we have 979 hits to the thread for 105 votes plus about 30 postings (including 4 or 5 by me). Of the 105 votes - it seems a remarkable 94 of 112 votes (83.9%) of those who voted from the DIS pack either an ELABORATE or DECENT costume or they pack some Pirate accessories to get into the spirt of things! Only 2 voters (1.8%) admitted being unfamiliar with the pirate nite. And oddly enough we had 16 of 112 (14.3%) packed nothing for the pirate nite.

Frankly, I am impressed by the pirate enthusiasm indicated... as I would have expected a far larger porportion of voters bringing nothing for the party. Now I don't feel so guilty about bringing my pirate gear! :thumbsup2

YOu guys look so great! And just for the record, I love your wife with the red hair!

Coming from a nonpirate such as yourself that is a wonderful sentiment and I will certainly share it with her.

You really should try dressing up once though, cause it is a blast.

I love looking at the photos in the thread.

For sure....we will be dressed as pirates on our July cruise! pirate:

We actually have pirate costumes already since the boys ( DH, DS 10 and DS 8) were pirates last halloween. Hopefully I can convince them to wear the more elaborate outfits. Otherwise I may have to do a little reworking of the outfits to simplify them a bit. AAAARRRRRR! pirate:

Our family went all out! We had a ton of fun looking for awesome costumes before the cruise..almost as much fun as wearing them!

The photos of the last few contibutors are astonishing! Your costumes make me reconsider designing my "exotic" pirate costume. You guys are definately "over the top"! :thumbsup2

pirate: On our Disney Cruise, in June of 05, My mom had found out about Pirate night a few days before we left. My best friend and I, both 18, decided to get together some of our things we already had ( big hoop earings, bangles, bandanas, shell necklaces, sarongs, "cut up" capri's, and of course flipflops) and kind of "threw together" an outfit. the only thing I really went to buy, was a tank top so I could make me a Pirate shirt. We had so much fun and were the only people over age 5 that really dressed up. Our waiters, Ganesh, Benedict, and Judy, asked us to get up and dace with them around Parrot Cay when they first started their Pirate Performance. Every where we went on board after that night everyone called us the Pirate Girls. :smooth: :thumbsup2 Like I said we had so much fun, because you have to really think about never seeing these people again in your life and if you're having fun, who really cares if you look silly or not! If I new how to put pictures on here I would....Sorry guys... pirate:
