Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. Some of us are training for the 2006 Disneyland Half and for the 2007 WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news/training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Here's the Marathon FAQ, a great place to answer your marathon questions:

Not much to report for this week. I'm feeling terribly undertrained for the Minnie. I'm supposed to be tapering this week, but DD13 didn't get her 8 miler in last weekend, so I told her I'd do 8 again with her tomorrow. Her scoliosis evaluation was yesterday at All Children's in St. Pete. No surgery at this time, but kidney ultrasound and MRI of the spinal cord to make sure those things developed correctly. They'll repeat Xrays in the fall to make sure the curvature is no worse. She's pretty bummed about her height...based on her xrays, she's almost done growing and it's not likely she'll be taller than me as she'd hoped.

Since we were up in the 'big city', we went to the mall to get dresses for an upcoming family wedding. I've decided that clothing is not actually designed for women with hips  DD13 found something fairly easily, but after 3 hours, I was disgusted with the whole process and bought the last thing I tried on just so it would be over.

Thinking about going ahead and booking the weekend of Race for the Taste, just in case we're able to go. Next week, we can book for our annual Xmas trip in December at VWL, then first of June, we'll be booking marathon weekend, hopefully at BCV!

Welcome to escape and Rachael!

Lynne...hope your tri went well! looking forward to the race report!

Colleen...glad to see you back!

Dave...thanks for taking on the shirts...if you need to see a pic of last year's, I'd be happy to post mine.

Hope everyone is training well! What's up next on everyone's schedule?

Hi WISH Team!

I can't believe I'm on the first page posting this week! That calls for our Cheer!

Thunder Thunder Thunderation!
We're the WISH Group delegation.
When we move with determination,
We create a GREAT sensation!

Mel, good about no surgery. Hope all works out well with Minnie. You can do it! Just relax, enjoy and let the adrenallin take over the rest.

Kevin, sorry about that dinner thing.

Sunny, be the poser! (you don't have to tell on yourself, smile and nod) And, now that you've diagnosed the cause of the problem, I hope you can let go of the bike!

Amy, I'd think you can relax that week before. You will amaze yourself then by all the energy you will have for the full.

CJ, sorry about the back, ouch. Hope you get it worked out real soon.

Monte, looks like you have a great plan in place.

I've got stuff on my computer from my Garmin! Next is to learn a little more about this powerful toy. I have had mine for almost a year and all I've done is use it to time my pace/distance avg pace/total distance. Its been great for that.

Wheee! I did a slow 2 mile wog today and then DH and I went for a little 15 mile bicycle ride. Lovely weather.

Hi Everyone,

Still have to catch up from last week with everyone's posts. Strange....I went to the WW meeting this past Thursday and the leader wants me to also become a leader......she said to follow up next week because they do some kind of seminar before becoming a receptionist/leader - if I were to go for something like this they do start you off as a receptionist. I guess, I could follow up.....it could bring some extra money my way and that's always good :thumbsup2

Friday, I did my run inside on the threadmill - 5 miles!

Today, I went to the running store and picked up a fuel belt.....I forget what the brand name is but it came with two bottles.....it's perfect! While there I also picked up a trail guide for Connecticut - I read through it while at Applebees (my DH and I stopped for an early dinner). Anyhow, the trails don't seem to be that long.....I think the longest one printed was around 5 miles. I was hoping to be able to mix things up a little bit......I was getting bored with the route that I already know......that's why on Friday when I could have very well run outside I opted to do it inside on the threadmill. Does everyone go through a little bit of boredom if they've worked a route for their runs a lot?

Oh - question for you guys......In October I will be doing a half marathon - do you think it would be too much to do a 5k a few weeks later? The Half Marathon is October 14th and the 5k is October 22nd - Is that pushing things too much? Should I rest more. Had I know about the 5k sooner I would have just done that......It's in Salem Mass. DH and I love going there in the Fall and Spring (this Spring - we skipped it but will be going in October).

Oh my goodness......I've been going on for a little bit - sorry for the long post.

Have a great night everyone,

Jodi

jodi - Congrats on being asked ot be a leader! If you take teh 5K easy, you should be ok, but I would not push it.

Mel - Glad dd does not need surgery! SOrry about the dresses. SOunds like my bathing suit experiences. I hate it whne I'm justified to buy and can't find anything!

LIly - Was just thinking we needed you to post our cheer again!

Are you all sitting down????? I did my 7-miler today!!! ALl by myself and had a pretty decent pace, even though I did not push it.

I did upload soem new stuff to my MP3. Doesn'thappen very often, because it tends to be so long btwn mp3 runs for me. 13 miles this week made it necessary.

Here are the new ones I was most delighted with:

Happy Feet adn Moving Right Along from teh Muppets Cd. Silly, but they were upbeat, met the theme and made me smile.

From 10 things I hate about You Ssoundtrack:

I Want You to Want Me
Wings of a Dove
Cruel to be Kind

Very fun!

This song was a little slow for running, but if you picture "she" as running/wlking/wogging, it's pretty appropriate.

Jessica Riddle---Even Angels Fall

You've found hope
You've found faith,
Found how fast she could take it away.
Found true love,
Lost your heart.
Now you don't know who you are.

She made it easy,
Made it free,
Made you hurt til you couldn't see.
Sometimes it stops,
Sometimes it flows,
But baby that is how love goes.

You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.

It's a secret no one tells;
One day it's heaven, one day it's hell.
It's no fairy tale;
Take it from me,
That's the way it's supposed to be.

You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.

You laugh, you cry, no one knows why
Behold the thrill of it all...
You're on the ride
You might as well
Open your eyes

You will fly and you will crawl;
God knows even angels fall.
No such thing as you lost it all.
God knows even angels fall.
Even angels fall
Even angels fall

Today was heaven. :smooth: Hope everyone else had good days!

Carrie - Great 7 miler!

Jodi - Even though I've only been running for a few months and I'm only doing 3 miles at the most, I'm already bored with my routes, so I'd definitely be looking for new stuff. The trails sound like fun!

Lily - Love the cheer!

We've spent the weekend (so far) getting ready for WDW! Doing laundry, cleaning house, cleaning the van... but fun since we know why we're doing it! The only "training" was walking the dog up to the park for Bark Around the Park (1/2 mile round trip!), but we did go to the park twice, so I don't feel like a total slug. I've pretty much decided my calf will do better if I stay off it completely till the Minnie and then hope I have the energy level, but I'm sure I will since I'll be AT THE MINNIE!!! :Pinkbounc After that if it's still hurting I'm going back to the doc.

WOW, when things get really busy with work and home I miss a lot here. PD to all who are in need. Good luck to all doing the Minnie - I am posting this now because I have no idea when I wil get back on the boards.

A run report from yesterdays weekly long run: We, 3 guys from the running club and I, set out for our Saturday morning run of 10 to 13 miles on a beautiful morning with thoughts of a simple pre-race (Broad Street 10 miler is next Sunday) warm-up run; little did we know of the adventure that awaited us. As I said it was a beautiful morning and all was going well until the decision was made to turn our planned out and back 12 miles into a loop 13 to 14 miles. The porblem arose after about two miles of trail running when there it was, a fence suddenly appeared blocking the trail that had been open for years. Apparently some land barron decided that he now owns the rail trails around his property and is fighting the township by constructing fences and blocking the trail and the township parking lot at the trail head. We had no choice but to forge the Brandywine creek - about 50 feet across at this point - and climb the bank to get to the road. We plunge into the ice water - felt good on the feet but with 4 miles yet to run visions of blisters were dancing in my head - and scamper to the bank. It turns out that there is no good footing on this mud hill called a bank and it takes a full 3 minutes to slip slide our way to the top. Now we have to run on a road - thank God it was early on a Saturday morning - with water shooting out of our mud-soaked shoes with each stride. It is really interesting how different makes of running shoes make different squishing sounds when wet. ufice it to say the feet suffered for the next couple of miles but, when finished, we four had one fun story to relay to our running brethren.
Have a great Sunday everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Mike! That's a pretty hardcore trail run!

Carrie...wtg on the 7 miles! :cheer2: Those are some great songs for training. I'm afraid my MP3 player died after the Sarasota half, so I've been running without a soundtrack since

For anyone that didn't see last year's WISH marathon shirts, I've posted photos of mine on the shirt thread:

I've started thinking about food :thumbsup2 Anyone know if we can now make ADR's 180 days from our trips? If we want to do a meet that involves ressies, we'd be able to make them in July that way.

I think TE went okay last year once the manager got over the fact that we were all there. If we want to do something like that again, I think we'd do better just making individual ressies for our groups and not telling management that we're all there together. Or we could do something at DTD or a resort food court and eliminate the need for ADR's. How would y'all like to do it this year?

Chimera-- I think the resort food court idea might be a great one! That way we won't have to worry about ADRs, taking up a bunch of tables, etc, etc. Having to make ressies in July certainly complicates matters, since I'm sure we will have people join us during the summer and fall that would like to meet up as well. Whatever everyone wants to do is fine by me.. I'm NOT missing it this year!!!

Carrie-- Way to go on the 7-miler!! I'm so happy it's finally spring here :thumbsup2

Jodi-- I think you could do that. Full marathoners (You're running the full, right?) do this several times during their training programs. So long as you feel sufficiently recovered, I don't see why not.

Lily-- I made the mistake of agreeing to accompany a friend to that straight-out-of-the-Jerry Springer show shindig. Ended up leaving after the appetizer and stopping at Arby's on the way home. :rolleyes2

I should have looked at my training plan before saying what I was supposed to do. Yesterday was in fact 4 miles, for which I averaged 9:20 pace. Today will be 6 once the rain stops.... otherwise it'll be a very soggy 6 miler this evening.

Happy training all!

Hi Folks,
Chimera invited us over. DW & I think about doing the 2006 10K Race for the Taste at EPCOT.
We both run a lot although it's not the main focus of our program, which looks like this:
Monday: 35 minutes on the treadmill, 1 hour weight workout
Tuesday: 35 minutes on the treadmill, 1 hour weight workout
Wednesday: 30 minutes on the treadmill, 45 minutes weight workout, 45 minutes Badminton
Thursday: 45 minutes on the treadmill, 1 hour The Pump
Friday: 1 hour on the treadmill
Saturday: Off
Sunday: Either 35 minutes on the treadmill, 45 minutes Badminton or 90 to 120 minutes on the treadmill.
Our treadmill sessions we split 50/50 between running and the elliptical.

During summer we additionally run outside, do inline skating, and dragonboat racing. We've attended the JP Morgan Chase Corpoarate Challenge for the last 10 years, a 3.5 mile race. DW's personal best is 25:45, mine is 24:30min, but that time is not exactly representative as there are up to 60,000 people on the track, which force you to do a lot of zigzaging ;)

:wave2: Hi Everyone,

Today I did my 10 mile run.....ran to a few new places, including a State Park, what a beautiful day the only thing that was bugging me slightly was my allergies. I honestly didn't know if I was capable of doing 10 miles today but I did it - I'm so happy :woohoo: The only thing that I was that crazy about is that I only acheived an overall of 11.41 min/mile.

Mel You can do the Minnie - I know you can :thumbsup2

Dave How did the run with you club go?

Carrie Congrats on the 7 miles!

Hi Viking....Welcome!!! :wave2: You'll find this to be a wonderful, supportive group of runners, walkers and woggers! Some of us (not me) are fast...some are newbies....some are experienced runners....some are walkers. But we all have the same goals....to complete various events throughout the year and to live healthy and strong! We're glad to have you join us!!! :thumbsup2

Jodi.....I'd say that your pace wasn't too bad for a 10 miler (see my pace below LOL) and new territory. I always seem to run slower in a new environment. I think I spend too much time looking around LOL! I did that today for sure!

Mel....thanks for the pics of the T-Shirt. Seeing that makes it all seem so much more real!! :cool1:

Today I did my first ever 5 miler. Well, the first 5 miler I've run in, oh, about 20 years. It's exciting to have finished this distance since it actually felt like a Long Run. Turns out the new trail I picked for myself was so much more challenging than I thought it would be. Turns out it was 75% uphill. And about 50% dirt, rocky trail. My other challenge was that the sport drink I chose to fuel with gave me TERRIBLE stomach pains. Scratch that one off the list! Oh....and I had Ipod trouble on top of it LOL! But the weather was simply beautiful and I made it home. My DH dropped me off 5 miles from home and had strict orders to go out looking for me if he didn't see me in an hour LOL! Well....I made it back in under an hour. My pace was 11:39 mpm overall. I had to walk some on the trail....but I had a very fast last mile so that made up for some of my walking! Like Jodi, I'm not terribly excited about my pace but I am happy that I finished it all in one piece! That's something!! :cheer2:

Hey everyone! :wave2:

Amy - Yea on your 5 miler!!! I think we learn so much more on the hard runs! You know which drink not to use! ;) Great job!!! :thumbsup2

Jodi - Awesome job on the 10 miles!!! Running through the state park sounds beautiful! On your 5K question - I don't know that I would do it a week after the half. Two weeks might be okay, but only you will know what your body is capable of.

Viking - Welcome!!! :welcome: I posted on your other thread, too, but DH and I are planning on doing the Race for the Taste weekend. So glad you joined our thread! :cool1:

Kevin - Hope you have a great run, and that the rain stops for you!!! :sunny:

Goofy Guy - Congrats on your long run!!! Great job dealing with the obstacles!!! :thumbsup2

Jackie - YEA!!! Minnie is getting sooo close! Lots of pixiedust: for your calf!

Carrie - Great job on your 7-miler!!! And thanks for sharing that song!

Dave - Thanks so much for doing the shirts!!! :teeth:

Lily - Thanks for the cheer!!! :cheer2: Great job on the "little" 15 mile bike ride! :goodvibes

Mel - I'm with you on feeling undertrained for the Minnie, but we can do it!!! Sometimes life gets in the way of training. Just think how good it will feel to cross the finish line, though! :woohoo: I'm so glad your DD doesn't have to have surgery! Yea!!! :goodvibes

Training has been sporadic with me. My foot is pretty well healed, but a little sore after long walks. I haven't tried running on it, yet. I have a sinus infection right now, but have a doctor appt. on Tuesday. I just want to be able to breathe at the Minnie! Swimming and biking are going well.

Our weekend excitement can only truly be appreciated by other runners... DH was doing his long run yesterday morning before daybreak. He was about 4 miles in when he heard a cat that sounded in major distress. He found this cat with his back paw stuck in a fence, hanging upside down trying to get free. You can probably see where this is going... good news: the cat is free; bad news: DH got a nice deep cat bite and lots of claws in his forearm. So we spent yesterday morning in the ER, and he has to go through the rabies vaccination over the next month. DH is doing okay, but is extremely sore, and a bit skiddish around stray cats. ;) Animal control is trying to find the cat. We are concerned about it, because I'm sure there is some injury to his back paw. P and PD for both DH and the cat would be appreciated! :goodvibes

My LW/R got postponed yesterday because of the cat, so I will try to get out this evening. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!

Well, I am back, unfortunately!! ;) I had a wonderful time at AKL, and I am already trying to figure out a way to go back!! I actually did end up running my "long" run on Thursday before we left for Disney. Well, the run itself was only 3 miles, but it was 3 miles without stopping, and I didn't realize that alot of that trail was uphill, so it was much harder than I expected. My calves were kicking my butt walking around Disney!! I feel amazing today though, and can't wait for my run tomorrow morning.

I'll only be running for 30 minutes/ 3 times this week, and then I will run 3.5 miles on Saturday. I can't wait!! Anyway, gotta go. Kids screaming, but I'll check back in later.

Do I understand it correctly that a new thread is started every week?

Lynnda pixiedust: pixiedust: and MORE pixiedust: Oh, WOW!!!! Your DH is a true knight in shining armor!! Battle scars and everything! I don't know that my DH would go there, but I would have! Really hope that AC finds the cat. Don't forget about the notifying animal clinics to be on the lookout for someone bringing in a cat with an injury that matches. Lots of people don't put collars on cats.
Viking :welcome: Yes, Mel starts a new thread every week for us..we are a VERY chatty group!!
Amy, Jodi, Lily, Mike, Dana good distances..obstacles and all!! :cheer2:
Dave So glad to hear you got a good ortho consult!! Also, proud of you for your determination to stick with your goal rather than giving it up. :woohoo:
Mel The shirt is fantastic! Was that picture of you taken at the start? Did you lose any of the layers? Apparently, not down to the WISH shirt at any rate! :teeth:

FYI I have always associated our green with the dis.boards even when I was on the trip reports threads last year. At my first 5K, though, I saw pamphlets for the Arthritis Foundation "Joints in Motion" teams and they use the same lime green. Now that I've seen the great shirt from last year, I agree with others who say to add dis.boards to whatever design.

Carrie, I, too, did my first solo training run yesterday. 7 miles is awesome! I managed only 5.5 due to poor planning of the route. I had wanted 6... BUT every mile was UNDER 15!!! Oh, my goodness!! I am just amazed at how this all works. Never would have believed it if it wasn't for reading this thread!

I'll be even MORE amazed if I cross the finish line Sunday. I'm terrified that I haven't done 9 miles. 8 has been the most, and that was only once. I know, all the plans for the marathons don't have us doing the whole distance....
Like others have said, I'm going to be depending on the camaraderie and the atmosphere of WDW to get me through!

My song for this week is, "Heigh ho, heigh ho, It's off to Walt Disney World I go...."

I got in my LR this morning. So much for the "cold" weather around here. It was already 83 degrees at 9 a.m. I did 3 miles of run3/walk2 in 44:47. I even did negative splits. Tomorrow will be a rest day. Have a great week everyone!

Viking...welcome :wave2: Tell us all about Frankfurt!

Anne, yep...that was me at the start of the half. I don't handle cold well :teeth: Don't get me started though...these guys had to listen to me whine about the starting temp for the half for a good month before the race ;) I finished the race down to 3 layers, with no hat, gloves or scarf. WDW has volunteers that collect the clothing shed along the course, wash it and donate it to charity.

Dana...sounds like a great trip!

Lynnda...yikes! :wizard: for Bill and his wounds!

Hi guys - just a quickie to say my certificate arrived today (hooray) but even better (cue high pitched screaming that normally only dolphins can hear) I'm on the DVD. I'm so excited I could pop. Should you get bored, go about 3/4 of the way in, past the animal kingdom segment into epcot. You get two girls run past with purple TnT tops and fairy wings on, then a kind of dull bit during which you'll see the back of a girl wearing a white top, fuel belt, black shorts with a long blonde ponytail - guess who, guess who, guess who? If you watch it superslowly you even see lily's Wish scarf round my wrist. Gotta go pop now - in fact, better go to the gym am so super stoked I'll fly round my program.

Oh in all my excitement, I forgot to say Jodi, you can definitely do the 5k - in fact, depending how you feel with your training, you might want to try and race it. At our running club, everyone always races the 5k on the Wednesday night after we do a half marathon as for some reason you do your fastest time of the year. You never know it might work for you too.

Jodi - congrats on the job offer. I'm w/ helen about the 5 k. I don't think it should be any big deal you should be fine by then. About the boredom, I get bored w/ just one sport, so I try to mix it up, but I have found that on the really long runs 15+ miles, I find comfort in doing my same ol' route. That way I know just where the .5 mile markers are and how much i have left.

Mel - YAYYYY On no sx!!!!!

Goofyguy - Your trail run sounds like my adventure races. I don't care what the length 6 hours or 25+, I always do about 1/2 the race w/ grit in my shoes and wet feet!!!! I loved your run report!!!!!! Sounds like a real adventure.

I mt. biked this we on my new bike. I'm having some probs w/ the gears, but the dual suspension was AWESOME!!!! I felt like i was moving faster than normal. Major breakthrough!

I'll try to get a short TM run in tomorrow if I can keep the boy occupied.

Helen that's terrific! :cheer2: I haven't even opened my cd yet. Guess I better watch it now!

Today was mostly rest. DS had T-ball and then we went to the rock wall at the Y. No one was there so we got to use it as much as we wanted. I did much better than my first time and DS did, too.

Sunny - glad you guys had a good time climbing. Did your little one overcome his fears? That is awesome!!!! Oh, and .... I forgot to chime in on the jacket.. Awesome!! I'm so glad you got it. That is cool. I say you would not be a poser, but that you would wear it in honor of that great event (nothing wrong w/ that!)

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:
Wow, May 1st - the Minnie is almost here! Good luck to everyone going to WDW. I'll be thinking of you.

Mel- PD :wizard: on DD13's MRI. I hope the kidneys and spinal cord all look OK. Thanks for posting your pictures of the WISH shirt. As far as food/meeting place goes, I don't care where we meet as long as I'm there and we can get together. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone (although I'll be a little nervous to come out from behind the safety of my anonymous computer). Just remember we were going to try to pick someplace where the kids could run around too.

Lily- Have fun with your Garmin. I've been having fun with mine. I'm amazed at how you can plot your runs on the computer. Great job on the wog and biking.

Jodi- Hmmm, that is a little strange that they asked you to be a WW leader after they were giving you grief about being there before. You should mention your experience to the leader that invited you to become one. Just so they know what your experience was. Good job on your 5 mile TM run :thumbsup2. Yeah, I get bored with my running route too, and it's fun to run new places. I also think you can do the 5K after the half-marathon. It's all just training for Goofy in January anyway, right ;)? Whoa, I just saw you did 10 miles!!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: That is great, Jodi. Who cares about the pace, you were out there doing it. WTG! You've really come a long way. I'll talk about my group run below.

Carrie- Awesome 7 miler! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: You rock! I like your MP3 songs too. "Moving Right Along" brought back memories for me. I remember seeing "The Muppet Movie" in the theater with my sister many moons ago, and I used to be able to play "Moving Right Along" on my saxophone (I don't even have a saxophone anymore).

Jackie- Have fun getting ready for WDW. I think you made a good decision staying off your calf until the race. No amount of stretches or exercises are going to work miracles on it now. Just rest it, and do what you can do at the Minnie. I would still ice it though. I still ice my shins 2x/day even on my rest days, and they are getting better and better.

Mike/goofyguy1958- Great story about the trail run. Good luck at the Broad Street 10 miler - have fun.

Kevin- How did your 6 miler go yesterday? Did the rains stop. Sounds like you have some story to share about the dinner party Friday.

Welcome Viking!!! :welcome: This group has been great. I joined up at the end of January, and they've helped me train steady for 3 full months now.

Amy- Good job on your 5 mile trail run too. :thumbsup2 That sounds like a tough one. Don't worry about your pace. It will come. I always run slower somewhere new too. I think it's because I'm trying not to get lost.

Lynnda- Glad your foot is healed up. Don't worry about being undertrained for the Minnie. You'll get through, get your medal, and it will be more training for WDW Marathon Weekend, right? Wow, PD :wizard: for your DH about the cat bite. Those can be serious. Besides rabies, it is very easy for cat bites to get infected. They carry some sort of bacteria that humans don't have, and after the bite it's easy for it to get into our system. I had a raging infection once from a cat bite. Make sure he gets some antibiotics ASAP if there are any signs of infection.

:welcome: Back Dana! Sounds like you had a great 3 mile run before you left. Great job. I'd love to hear more about your trip, and what you did for DS's (right?) 5th birthday. If I'm able to make it down to the full marathon in January, I need to plan something for DD8's princess: 9th birthday (January 6th the day before the marathon).

Anne- you're very kind. Yes, the ortho appointment has helped. Been getting lots of advice on stretching and exercises which has been good. I'm amazed at how well the icing has been helping the shins. Good for you on your training run under 15 mpm pace! That's awesome! :thumbsup2 You'll get through the Minnie. You can do it!

Heather- Great training run. Negative splits, awesome!

Helen/littlegreydonkey- That is so cool that you are on the DVD. How awesome is that? Oh, BTW we watched "Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin" for our Friday family pizza/movie night. Very cute. DD5 princess: is such a huge Pooh fan. Very cute.

MelR- glad you're having fun with your new mt bike. Are you going to the Minnie? I take it you and Sunny didn't win that contest?

Sunny- sounds like you had a great day with DS at the rock wall. Good for you. Thanks for posting the T-shirt designs on the other thread. I must admit about the Boston Marathon jacket - I would feel the exact same way. Knowing me, I would feel like a huge imposter if I wore the jacket (not that you are, but I empathize with your feelings). Once my SIL gave me a coffee mug that said "Ask Dr. Science" on it, and I refused to drink out of it until I finished my PhD because I didn't want to be an imposter/poser. I hear you Sunny, I hear you... You could keep it as incentive/motivation to qualify for Boston, but don't have it become a symbol of NOT qualifying for Boston. You've certainly accomplished so much.

OK, now I need to get ready for work, and didn't post my training. I'll have to post again later.

Viking...welcome :wave2: Tell us all about Frankfurt!
Mel,
I assume you're referring to that race in Frankfurt. It's the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge, which originally was started in the USA and still takes place there in several cities, and also in London, Amsterdam, Johannesburg, etc. It's American origin is also the reason for the 3.5mile-distance (5.6K). Somehow the run in Frankfurt attracts the most people. The JPMCCC is a team-rum intended to promote teamwork and bonding in companies, there is no fastest runner, there is just a fastest team. Of course the fastest man and the fastest woman are recognized, but it doesn't count for anything - it's just the team that counts!!
There are small companies, i.e. doctor's offices, starting with just one team of four runners and companies like Lufthansa or big banks with teams of 2,000+ runners. Last year there were more than 58,000 runners in that race. 58,000 athletes on 5.6K of track make roughly 10 people per meter or three people per foot, which makes for a tight fit ;) Til all people have passed the two starting lines, whose tracks are merged after a quartermile, usually 45 minutes pass by.
The track goes through Downtown Frankfurt with a steady incline for the first two K and then it's downhill for another 1K, the rest is flat. As all streets are blocked for traffic and everything takes place on wide boulevards and avenues it's usually possible to run without a lot of pushing and shoving. Nevertheless ambitious runners have to zigzag a lot thus stretching the 5.6K to at least 6K.
The last time I did the first 2K in slightly under 8 minutes (6:20 per mile), but then got 'stuck in traffic' and so finished in 24:30. Runners being able to do the distance in 20 minutes or less are started a minute before the masses to allow them to make full use of the track.

Just in case you also wanted to know about my home- and birthtown:
Frankfurt am Main (upon Main) is a bit more than 1,200 years old and located more or less in the center of Germany and also of Western Europe, which is one reason for its airport being one of the busiest and most important in the Eastern hemisphere . The population is about 650,000, but the extended area -called the Rhine-Main-area, named after the two major rivers merging 20 miles to the east- is home to more than 2 million people, including cities like Wiesbaden, Mainz, and Darmstadt.
Frankfurt is also often referred to as 'Bankfurt' as about 200 banks have their world- or European headquarters here. Another nickname is 'Mainhattan' as it is located along the banks of the river Main and is the only German city with a skyline worth mentioning, sporting skyscrapers of up to 900' and a Telecom-tower of about 1,000'. The German Federal Reserve Bank has chosen Frankfurt as its location as well as the European Central Bank, the headquarters of the € (Euro), the European currency.
Here's a link to Frankfurt's homepage providing lots of information in English: Frankfurt's Homepage (http://www.frankfurt.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=stadtfrankfurt_eval01.c.317693.en&template=hp_flash)
We are home to several sports teams:
-Eintracht Frankfurt (Soccer Premier League)
-FFC (Ladies' Soccer Premier League)
-The Skyliners (Basketball Premier League)
-The Frankfurt Lions (Hockey Premier League)
-The Frankfurt Galaxy (Football, NFL World League)

We're also hosting several games of the 2006 Soccer World Cup in June, which is the most important event for our country since the 1972 Olympics and the 1974 2006 Soccer World Cup.
Every point in our country can be reached from Frankfurt by car in six hours or less. Most major European cities are just a one to two hours flight away: Rome, Vienna, Paris, London, Copenhagen, Madrid, Lisbon, Brussels Stockholm, Warsaw, etc.
And the most important driving time for DISers: Disneyland Paris is about 5 to 6 hours by car. We could be quicker, but unfortunately the Froggies ;) have strict speed limits on their Autobahnen :rotfl2: Taking into account the transfer time, the time needed for security checks, baggage retrieval, etc. it's about the same time as needed for flying there from Frankfurt.

Good morning WISH Team!

Welcome Eric! Great to have you here, you have given a fantastic report of your hometown. It seems much larger than I at first envisioned.

Dave, you did an excellent review. I'll ride in on that and say to all--yes, what he said! :teeth: Great job!

We took yesterday to do a few things around the house and then played. DH and I celebrated 29 years of marriage yesterday and went to the theater to see Dr. Doolittle. It was a great day and we are truly blessed.

Good morning everyone!!! :sunny: Happy May!!!! :flower: :flower: Isn't today May Day?

Well, I'm as trained for the Flying Pig 1/2 as I can be, I did 6 miles on Saturday, I ended up doing it on the treadmill, because like Jodi, I am getting bored with my route. So I decided to watch "Napoleon Dynamite" (one of my favorite movies) while I did my walk. I finished in 1:24, right as the credits were rolling--perfect timing!! This week I have 3-3-3 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and then the Pig on Sunday. Wish me luck!! :wizard: I think I'm going to have a pedicure next week before we leave for Disney (10 days!! :cool1: ) with running and walking, my feet are NOT sandal ready. :lmao:

Viking--Welcome!!! I loved reading about Germany. I'm of German descent and I am very interested in the country.

Jodi-- :cheer2: on your 10 miler!! Were you doing that for fun or are you training for a long race? :cheer2: on being asked to be a leader, that's wonderful.

Mel-- :wizard: for the Minnie--I know you will do fine! :cheer2: that your daughter doesn't need surgery, that is wonderful to hear. Tell her it's okay to be a shorty, but I feel her pain, I'm 5'1" and I haven't grown since elementary school. I don't care where we eat, but one thing I have to say is if we do meet at a food court, we should probably pick an odd time to eat. I've only eaten in a WDW food court a couple of times, but both times the food court was mobbed. If we met at like 5:00 or something, I doubt we'll find tables together. Buffets are good, but Trails End was a mess last time. Sorry, I'm not being much help!!! By the way, I think about Disney food all the time!! In fact, Stephen and I usually plan our days around where we eat! :teeth:

Lynnda-- :wizard: for you hubby!!!! Poor guy!! Just trying to help the cat and look what happens! That's exactly why I'm a :dog2: person. :teeth: We had a stray cat in our basement on Friday, but thankfully she was wearing a collar and we found her home. :wizard: for Minnie! It sounds like you've been having a rough past couple of weeks. :wizard:

Carrie-- :cheer2: on your 7 miler!!! That's great that you had such a good run. How is your FIL doing?

Sunny--You are funny!!! I don't think you are a poser at all. Like Melissa said, you're wearing it in honor of the race. :teeth: I do know what you mean, I feel the same way about the "I'll run a marathon when pigs fly" t-shirt since I'm not doing the full and I'm technically not running. But I figure I am running a full marathon in January and I would be running if not for an injury, so I'm just going to buy it anyway. :smooth:

Well, I better go, I'll talk to y'all later!!!

dave - I'm not sure they've announced the contest winners yet. I have checked their website multiple times to see my name, but they haven't posted it yet. I'll have to give sunny a call when they do so we can arrange our tickets!

Today i have to lift and then either run on the TM or ride on the trainer. I don't think I can get the boy to agree to go out in the trailer. He might ride his trail -a -bike, but I'm not sure i want to drag him around that way b/c the balance thing makes it much harder and the bike is way heavier. I guess I'll give him some options after my coffee!

Good Morning Again TEAM:

OK, before I post my training report I gotta ask Krista something. Whaddya think of the Steelers draft? Do you think Santonio Holmes is going to be a good replacement for Antwaan Randel El? Being a Michigan grad, I have a hard time rooting for a Buckeye, but, hey, he's a Steeler now so I'll get behind him. Good luck with the Flying Pig 1/2. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Alright, I got that out of the way. Saturday, I ran with my "AP Learn to Run" group for the first time in 2 weeks. I was a little nervous because I haven't run with them or followed their training plan for a couple weeks. Plus, I had cut back on my running to help my shins. The learn to run group had also cut back on their mileage this Saturday after building up the past couple weeks. They were scheduled for a 4 miler, and I thought I could run with them for that. I wasn't sure if I was going to run the whole thing or take walking breaks, but figured I would see how it went. Well, I ran the whole 4 miles in a 10.14 mpm pace. My shins were very sore, but I made it through it and then iced when I got home. I ran with a very nice woman, Lisa. The same woman I had been running with the past couple weeks. She really helped pull me along in the beginning when my shins were really hurting, and she said I pulled her along towards the end. So we were a pretty good team. The ice has really been helping my shins, and I'm going to try to put in a full week of training this week. I have 3 weeks until the Lilac Festival 10k that runs in front of my house. I'm excited about that.

OK, I should start working. Have a good day everyone!

MelR-- Let's cross our fingers :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: Yes DS got over his fear a little bit. First I let him play on the little wall, then I coaxed him onto the real wall by promising him a prize if he made it to the third square (putting his feet about 7 feet up). After many tries he made it! I realized I should have signed him up for soccer instead of T-ball though. He gets way too bored waiting for his turn to bat. They were all so cute, not one of them was watching for the ball. They were picking dandilions, kicking stones, you name it!

Dave-- Thanks for posting your delimma with the coffee mug. I have a hard time telling people I'm a phycisist because I didn't finish my PhD, but then I don't know what to tell them I am :confused3 :lmao: When people ask me what I do its even harder! I don't have a clue what I do :rotfl2:

Helen-- I saw you!!!!!! That is soooooo cool! And to think I almost threw the envelope away thinking it was junk mail. I'm really bad about throwing everything away that even remotely looks like junk mail. I even threw away my GRE scores... And I was waiting for them!!!!! :rotfl:

Anyone else refuse to wear shoes that don't feel like running shoes anymore? My latest craze is this thrift store shopping. I bought a bunch of casual skirts, which meant I needed to get some shoes that can be worn with skirts. I searched three huge stores and ended up buying three pairs of Sketchers that just barely pass as casual skirt shoes! There is no way I'm wearing anything that makes my feet sore or doesn't feel like a supportive rubber sole! I did avoid open toe styles. :lmao:

Did Kim post a Boston race report? Has anyone heard from her?

Hi Sunny- OK, I'm not doing so well getting going on a Monday morning. Awww, I realize now you don't have to finish your PhD to say you're something. I think we all need to have a little more confidence in ourselves and our abilities.

No, Kim never did submit a race report from Boston, and I'm dying to know the details. In fact, she hasn't posted since leaving for Boston. I sent Kim a PM and she did report that she survived the race just fine and had a good time, but I think she's been super busy right now with her teaching. Kim- if you're lurking out there stop in and say hi.

I've been wondering if Christa/gatorphipps is still in Jordan. Hope she's doing OK. Come and say hi too if you're out there.

Mel - :wizard: for DD13. That's a lot for a little girl to go thru. I'm up for ressies anywhere we decide. ITA on the doing it individually thing. Just let me know. I'll do the badges if Helen isn't coming this year.

Dave - I should go back and read all that I missed last week, but you are doing shirts for us too? COOL. :smooth: You're like the WISH Clothes Dude. Let me know if I can be any help to you.

Viking - Welcome! :welcome: You're posts are so interesting!

Minnie - I'm so excited for you! I'll be there in spirit! :cheer2:

Amy - WTG on the 5-miler! You go girl!

Maherae - :wave2: Things should be back to normal this week so I should be hanging around like I normally do.

Helen - That is soooo cool that you are on the DVD! :teeth:

Where is that CAM??????? :confused3

OMG it's MAY already! How many months do I have left? "Not too many more" (Who remembers that line from Raging Bull???) I've found my first event - It's a local Memorial Day race. I did it once about 20 years ago. So now at least I have something in the works thats not months away.

My training has been going well, except for the past four days when I was a total slug. But today being May Day and all I said "Judith Anne...get back on track or cancel your POR reservation!" OK, that did it for me. I did my usual 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. Then I jumped on the stationary bike for a few minutes. All this while watching the end of Casablanca. I'm such a dork. During the part where Rick and Elisa are on the tarmack saying goodbye I thought "Hey, that's just like The Great Movie Ride".

One more "Yes, I'm a total loser" story....

Last week on the TM I was watching National Velvet and I'm such a sap for movies like this I was crying my eyes out at the end. Yes, folks, I was grabbing tissues while walking on the TM. So I come upstairs and DH was like "What's wrong?" I told him I was practing crying for when I am towards the end of the Half because no doubt I will be sobbing like a baby. Those, however, will be tears of joy. :goodvibes

OK, back to work I go. Ugh. :surfweb:

Dave -WHAT??????? I can't believe they picked a winner and it wasn't me!!!! The trip did not include airfare anyway! (that is a big expense from here) Maybe I could get Sunny to go w/ me and split a room anyway(read this sunny!!!!!!!) Oh, and as far as workout goes, the boy chose "stay home" so it looks like TM or trainer. I'm thinking TM, but he won't be able to stay away from it long enought to let me run. I usually give him a turn on it when I finish. He told me he wanted to ride his bike around the block instead of going anywhere. That means, ride half way around, and I carry the bike the other 1/2. I'm sure you know how it is!
Great job on your 4 miler!

Sunny - The boy likes climbing on the wall and outside, his problem is that he is not heavy enough to weight the rope on the way down and it is hard to get him down once he gets up there!

We did 35 minutes of cardio today, DW on the elliptical and I on the treadmill. I did a 5min warm-up, then 5K in 25min flat (8 minute per mile) followed by a 5min cool-down. After that we did our chest & shoulder workout of push-ups and pumping iron for an hour.
I mainly run on the treadmill, but always set it to an incline of 1.5%. According to the book .5 to 1.0% incline are sufficient to compensate for the lack of airresistance on the treadmill, but I like to add something ;)
I'm highly allergic (Hayfever) and right now everything is in bloom over here so running indoors is the best solution. Fortunately I'm mainly affected by it in April/May and then it's OK for the rest of the year, so in about three to four weeks we'll run outdoors again. But we also prefer the treadmill, because DW and I can run together this way without having to adjust her/my speed to the other one ;) I'm 5'11 at 200lbs, DW is 5' at 103lbs and so we usually run at slightly different speeds. I'm a bit faster, but she has a slightly better endurance, so usually the catches up with me after an hour. Additonally I can watch TV while running in the gym :p

I just checked the Komen-website for Germany: We won't be able to do the Race for the Cure this year as we'll already be in Florida then. It takes place 9/24 and we'll leave 9/23 for three weeks in the Sunshine State followed by a 7 day cruise on the Disney Magic.

It's good to see that there are more sport-a-holics on the DIS and once more I'd like to thank all of you for the warm welcome.

Hi Judy - no I'm definitely not going to be there this year, so you may be in charge of the little coloured stickers and marker pens (although I admit I passed the buck of actually writing them to Lisa!!!), but I want the job back for 2008, got all excited again watching the DVD yesterday - mind you people are already asking me when I'm doing the stupid race (I try to explain that it's Goofy not stupid but they're not having any of it) and look a bit shocked when I say Jan 2008, I think they think I'm going next week or something.

So, just been to the gym this morning, got to make a habit of that for a while as running buddy is off for operation so she can't run for six weeks (she did a marathon on sunday so she could do with a rest!!!) - when she comes back I"ll just be ready to start training for D/L - hooray. It does mean I'm two hours late starting work though so better go - Helen

News flash! I didn't win either. Oh well I'm glad I didn't. I didn't realize it did not include air fare. Then I'd get there and find out my pace is wayyy slow. I can't believe how quickly it has deteriorated

Oh Judy, you so had me smillng! OK I confess, really laughing! :lmao: Yup! You'll be crying for sure. Best to get in a lot of practice...but, nothing like the real thing.

Eric, I'd say I'd run with you and DW cruise time, but you'll all be having your second and third cups of coffee and I'd only be not halfway finished. I am so much slower. But, I'll be there in your dust! Glad you found us here. I like it when DH goes to the gym with me. Just not enought same time for us.

I'm hoping our Boston gal comes on board soon. I too am looking forward to your report. Hope things slow down enough soon Kim.

Sunny, Yay for your son. I think soccer would certainly be less boring. Maybe next sign up time.

Those racing this weekend. Take lots of pics. I lok forward to them all. I am really quite jealous of all of you. I want the Minnie medal and the Flying Pig has been one event I've thought about so make good on the pics and stories please.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I had a pretty good run yesterday some soreness in my shins, but I was able to get through it (iced afterwards). I'm trying to get back on my AP Learn to Run schedule. We were scheduled for a 4 mile run yesterday. I did 4.21 miles between 10:30 --> 11:11 mpm pace. Boy it seemed like I was going faster than that, but I guess the effort just made it seem like it was hard.

Judy- I like your training for crying going across the finish line of the 1/2 marathon. Does that count as cross training?

Dana- Great job with your 25 min wog, and thanks for posting the report of Michael's b-day trip. Your pictures are wonderful. How's it going with the quitting smoking? Keep up the great work.

Hello Eric/Viking- Thanks for your post about Frankfurt and your experience with the Chase Corporate Challenge. There is a Chase Corporate Challenge here in Rochester, NY on June 1st that I was considering running. The University is putting a team together. I must admit that I'm intrigued by the 2 t-shirts you get for the race (one for the race and one for the team).

Hi Helen- Oh it's too bad you won't be at the WDW Marathon weekend in 2007. Can we all come to you for a race in New Zealand?

Yes, I agree with what Lily said. Please post lots of pictures of the races everyone's running this weekend. I'm expecting lots of pictures from the Minnie and Flying Pig.

Lynnda - :wizard: for your DH!

Sunny - Definately wear that jacket!!! So many people here at work have them & wear them all the time. And trust me - they didn't / would never run any race! I also live in Sketchers. I have a job where I can wear jeans & t-shirts daily though. I about die when I have to go to a wedding or something & wear heels.

Lily - Happy Anniversary! It was also my parents' anniversary.

Judy - I hear you about crying at the finish line! I am so paranoid that I am going to cry this Sunday at the Minnie. It's my first race ever. And I HATE crying in front of people! I have a hard enough time trying not to cry when I watch DH run WDW every year.

Dave - :wizard: for your shins.

I was so good at posting here awhile ago, but I keep going MIA!
(may have something to do with being psycho-crazy and checking various goo goo dolls websites /message boards for tix info :rolleyes1 but i digress... )

I did my 8 mile wog on Saturday...AND LIVED! :teeth: I was just under a 14 min/mile overall. That is all I want - to stay ahead of the sweeper bus on Sunday. Funny story: Friday night I put a bottle of water in my parents' mailbox so when I wogged by on Saturday am, I could get it (they are approx. 3 miles from my house). I got there, and the mail carrier had taken my water! :confused3 :lmao: Thank goodness my parents have a hidden key. I went in the house and grabbed a bottle from their fridge. I hated to stop, but knew I wouldn't make it without the water. I left a bottle in their box last week, and the mail carrier did not take it. Weird. :confused3 (and yes, I know it's a federal offense to put something inside a mailbox besides mail, but geez!)

I was totally exhausted Saturday night & Sunday. Sunday I was so tired, I skipped my 60 mins. cross. Yesterday I was really tired again, but after eating way too many baked Cheetos while watching Desperate Housewives on TiVo, I forced myself to do my 4 mile Leslie Sansone DVD and 10 min. toning tape. This 4 hours of sleep a night is so not working for me!

Today is a 3 miler. Should be interesting since I haven't wogged in rain as of yet.

Hi all!! Sorry I haven't been posting much. Been crazy busy trying to get ready to leave. I am taking a camera for the race so if I can figure out how to post the pics I will be happy to.

I would love to do the Flying Pig too. Good luck to those doing it.

I wont be able to post much the next couple of days but I'll give you guys a full report when I get back.

Hi everyone!

Just a quick note to post that I got back on my dreadmill last night. I walked for 30 mins and stretched before and after. I am trying to find someway to do this without the back/hip pain so I thought slow and easy is the way to start.

Hope everyone is doing great!

:wizard: for all our Minnie Marathoners that are tapering this week.

Dave - :wizard: on those shins!!!

Oh - anyone good at math??? My grad stat course starts on Thursday and I am so paranoid about it :badpc:

Hi, everyone!
Sorry I haven't been around, but we were in Pittsburgh visiting my in-laws for the weekend and I was crazy busy yesterday.
I walked to and from the courthouse yesterday in shoes that have gotten too big since I lost weight, and MAN! are my feet sore! By the time I was leaving work last night, I couldn't bear the thought of walking 3 blocks to my parking garage. I did change into workout clothes (had to try out the shirt I am planning to wear for the Minnie) and sneakers (my twice-worn pair of my old favorites) and headed to the state park with the hopes of doing some major miles. Unfortunately, it was closing in about 45 minutes, so I had limited time and even less energy and a sore hip and very sore, blistered feet. UGH! I got in 2.25 miles in about 35 minutes. I think my pace was about 15:30, obviously not fast enough to beat the sweepers. Maybe I need to give Rhonda a cattle prod to hustle my sorry self.

The rest of the week is insane with a WW meeting tonight, a special olympics meeting tomorrow night, an appointment Thursday night, and flying to Orlando on Friday. There is just no hope of me getting in a long workout anytime this week unless I get out of bed at 5, and God knows, I am NOT as disciplined as Judy! :grouphug:

BTW, Helen, I can't wait to watch the video again and look for you! And, I agree with Dave, that we may have to plan a WISH field trip to experience an event in NZ. I guess the best I can look forward to right now is us meeting somewhat "halfway" in DL.

Sunny -- I agree that soccer would be an awesome sport for your DS. Both of my kids played it and it really did help DD (who was severely ADHD) to learn to be alert and focused. She loved it. Personally, I do not find baseball as exciting.

[okay, guys, I started this over an hour ago and keep getting distracted. Gotta wrap it up. Talk to you all later!]

Good morning everyone. I need to get over to my WDW Marathon thread and update it. So I'll do that next.

This morning I did my usual TM routine. I felt pretty strong. Then I did some stationary bike. I wish I had more time in the morning. Maybe I'll have to rearrange two or so mornings so I can spend more time training. Let me think about that..... :rolleyes1

Well, I sure as heck will not win the Half, but I might be nominated for "Best Dramatic Performance During Training"...

This morning DH asked me what DFL>>DNF>>DNS means since its on our fridge now. So, I explained. Then I said " I WILL FINISH the Half, if you have to drag my LIFELESS BODY across that finish line, I am going to FINISH". I was going to throw in a little "As God is my witness" but I thought that was a bit over the top.

"Thank you! Thank you! You love me, you really love me!"

:rolleyes2

Helen - I'm sorry you're not going to be there. But I am already thinking about 2008 so I'll get to meet you then. We can take turns doing the name badges. But to be honest, I was going to cheat and make them up before I go. We just made name tags for Take Our Children To Work Day and they came out pretty nice. However, since I manage the Graphics Dept, I expect no less. Otherwise I can fire people. Hee hee. :teeth:

Lily - Oh I'm glad I gave you a chuckle. I'm a big cry baby. You all might as well know that now.

Dave - Hey you ran 4.1 miles yesterday? :thumbsup2 You're doing really darn good! :cheer2:

Kristi - Oh please, who cares!?? They will be tears of JOY! Best of luck to you this weekend. :wizard: I expect a detailed trip/race report next week. :goodvibes

Minnie - Sorry I can't help you with the math. That's one subject I really disliked! :sad2:

Hi, everyone!
Sorry I haven't been around, but we were in Pittsburgh visiting my in-laws for the weekend and I was crazy busy yesterday. Cam- your in-laws are in Pittsburgh?!? Where? I grew up in Pittsburgh, and my mother-in-law still lives there on the North Side within walking distance to Heinz Field, PNC Park, and the Carnegie Science Center. We were just in Pittsburgh to see her over Easter. Small world...

Crazy busy at work.

No time to chatch up, but wanted to say,

Welcome Viking!!!

Still tryiing to get over my I'm not doing the MInnie deptresssion. :(

Kristy - Thanks fo rsaking about FIL. They did skin grafts Friday. We were supposecd to hear if they took SUnday or yesterday. DH can't get a hold of MIL and she has not bothered calling. Grrr.... He was there fo rthe surgery adn stayed unitl late Friday night. NOt like he's not doing his best to try to be there. It'd be nice if she was a little better at communicating. Anyway, if they took, he could go home this week! What a relief that will be, but recovery will be long and slow. They said it will be 6 to 9 month sbefore he can do stairs again. He's taking very brief walks (3 to 5 steps) with a walker now.

Have a great week everyone!

Hello again everyone

Just wanted to wish everyone who is participating the best of luck for the Minnie this weekend!! I've got to make it a point to visit the weekly threads more often...between my journal and things moving so quickly on here it makes it hard to stay afloat!!

Anywho, I'm running my second 5k this weekend...it's called the Library Run 5K in Ball Ground, GA. It's pretty much up hill for 1.5 and then down hill for the final 1.5...should be interesting to see if I can better my time from my last 5k.

Training has gone really well for me as I had a super 5 mile run on Sunday, pacing at 9:53 per mile. I'm working up to 6.5 mile runs on the weekends to prepare me for the Peachtree 10k on July 4th. I'm doing 40-50 minute 4r/1w on Mondays and Thursdays, 40 minute elliptical sessions on Tuesdays & Fridays and my distance runs with the same 4r/1w intervals on Saturdays.

Good luck again to those running this weekend and I promise to start hitting this thread more often!

Plum is bordered by Oakmont and New Ken. In fact there were parts of Plum with Oakmont and New Ken addresses. I think the Oakmont Country Club is officially in Plum (so they don't have to pay Oakmont taxes). My best friend who was best man in my wedding now lives in New Ken. What high school did Howard go to? I remember running track against Valley High and Lower Burrell.

Yup, very interesting... my parents moved from Plum and eventually ended up in Delaware. My mom even ran a meals on wheels in Plum and they had a lot of clients in New Ken. Wow, what a very small world...

I've been lurking here a lot more than I have been posting lately. You guys sure are chatty! I love it! Keeps me motivated!

Headed off to Epcot later this afternoon for Flower Power. Then tomorrow it's off to see the Yankees vs the Devil Rays. Then a couple of days on the beach in Chimera's neighborhood. We will stop at the Expo on our way home to pick up our race packs for the Minnie 5K. Then Sat Am, the race and EoS in the afternoon. Going to be a busy week for us, especially since the beach - any beach - is one of my favorite places in the world and I tend to over-do it when I get there. I love ocean swimming and I tend to stay on the beach out in the sun way too long! I sure was not thinking about the Minnie when I scheduled all of this! It will be interesting to see what shape I will be in on Sat. Seems like the older I get, the longer I need in recovery time when I over-do things! :earseek:

Anyone else refuse to wear shoes that don't feel like running shoes anymore? My latest craze is this thrift store shopping. I bought a bunch of casual skirts, which meant I needed to get some shoes that can be worn with skirts. I searched three huge stores and ended up buying three pairs of Sketchers that just barely pass as casual skirt shoes! There is no way I'm wearing anything that makes my feet sore or doesn't feel like a supportive rubber sole! I did avoid open toe styles.

Sunny, do you mean that there actually ARE other kinds of shoes! :earseek: Oh, wait, I do wear my flip-flops occasionally! Unlike some of you, I can't run in them, though! Too slippery for me!

Lily, congrats to you and Ted on your anniversary! You guys really do make a great couple! It is easy to see why your marriage has lasted so long and is still going strong!

Krista, have a great time doing the Flying Pig!

Viking, welcome! Thanks for the info on your home town. It was fun reading it.

Dave, Helen, where do I sign up for the New Zeeland trip! :cool1:

I'm off to get ready to go see the Grass Roots and some laps around the World Showcase Lagoon!

(Feel free to send a PM if you don't want to broadcast his info! :teeth: ) Howard graduated Valley High School class of '81. He was a golfer, though, not a runner back in those days. Wow! Look at him now -- he ran 22.21 miles yesterday, training for his 5/21 Delaware Marathon. Oh, and he played and caddied at Oakmont Country Club. Funny!

Good luck to everyone doing the Minnie! We can't wait to hear all about it.

My youngest DD turned 3 yesterday. When she was born, I had 4 girls 4 and under. It makes me tired just thinking about it. It makes 4 girls 7 and under (which is what I have now) seem sane somehow.

The team captain for our relay marathon on May 20th has moved me to the starting position in the race. I guess we are going to go with the "tortoise" approach to the race rather than the speedy rabbit approach. At least I get to run when it is cooler (probably only 80 degrees) at the start. I guess I better stop eating birthday cake and get back to training.

Here's my update... I did a 5 mile run on Sunday, and my foot felt good. It was insanely hot, but I ran in the afternoon, so Sunday should be much better for the Minnie! Last night I did a practice triathlon. It was my first lake swim - YUUUUUUUCK!!! That is NOT my thing! :lmao: But my times were close to what I had hoped for. I went to the dr. today and now have all kinds of meds to help me breathe for the Minnie, so life is good! I can't wait to see all the WISH-ers!!! Only a few more days!!!!!!

What exciting news for Bree! Okay, just to show you how weird my DH is, here is the exchange we just had:
Me: Oh, this is sooo cool! Honey, do you remember Bree? We met her on the bus over to Ft Wilderness.
Him: Yes.
Me: She is pregnant!
Him: I have an alibi.
Me: WHAT does that mean?
Him: On the bus. Other WISHers. You were there. It wasn't me. :teeth:
Me: Oh, very funny. You are so cute. Such a comedian!
Him: No, really, that is great!

So, I'm married to a comedian. :rotfl2: Most of you think he's kind of quiet and reserved. :confused3 Actually, he has made me laugh at least once nearly every day since I met him 23.5 years ago.

Which reminds me -- Lily, I forgot to wish you and DH a happy anniversary. He must be a really special guy to deserve you!

Hi there - just a quickie in case I don't get in before you all leave for the Minnie, have fun, cuddle Eyeore and Tigger for me (if I don't finally get that photo in 2008, I'm doing a detour in Epcot to find them).

And in other notes:
Dave, Cam, Nancy, anyone else needing a holiday, It's the Auckland half/full marathons on October 29th. Umm, there's no characters but you get to run over a bridge you normally can't walk over, you get to run past a volcano or two, I usually know a man who can get you in the beer tent (always nice at 8am) and if you're really lucky like I was in 2004 you'll finish 5 seconds before the marathon winner who will then hurl 2 feet away from your shoes!!!

Christa: Congratulate Bree for me - and tell her not to drink that sweet tea stuff you like down there, this baby needs teeth and I'm sure that just dissolves them in utero!!

Cam: If ever I heard an excuse to go shoe shopping that's it! Hmm, maybe that could be my inspiration for losing a few pounds, new shoes.....

That's it, tonight I jog for 20 minutes, then race 5k with the running club. It's gonna hurt! Helen

I took a rest day yesterday. I've been alternating my rest days and running days to give my legs lots of time to recover. I did run 0.5 miles with my princesses princess: princess:, and then did some stretching, strengthening, and icing afterwards.
Dave -- I think your friend lives across the road from a vey well-known local restaurant called "Veltri's". Is that right? Cam- ::yes:: You got it. It has gotten so crazy around here that I have been tapering right on down to zero. I got in my 2 miles Monday but nothing since then & prob nothing before I leave. My rational is that I didn't exercisethe week before the 1/2 either because we were already in WDW.

Christa-good to see you back again. Congrats to Bree :cloud9: When is she due?

Cam-you really do have a great guy & sounds like you guys have a wonderful relationship. See you in a couple of days!

Lynnda-Lake swimming, yuck! There are alot of tri's around here in lakes, I haven't gotten over the yucky water thing yet.

It's another day of trying to get better organized, taking care of kids' commitments & trying to find the perfect sandal. I cannot find 1 single pair of sandals that I can wear for an entire day. Now I'm not talking to wear to WDW or anything, just around town. Everything is either not comfortable or rubs on my feet somewhere. It's getting very frustrating! My feet get to hot to wear sneakers all summer.

Good morning everyone!! :sunny: Why is it the week of an event, you always suffer from an injury?? I did 3 miles on Monday and I had terrible shin splints, it felt like my whole leg was bruised. I have not had shin splints in almost a year! I iced my leg Monday night and it was still really sore after icing and all of yesterday. It doesn't hurt today, so I'm doing 3 miles tonight and 2 tomorrow and then I'm done. The whole thing is just bizarre!!!

Christa--Welcome back!!!! :cheer2: Tell us all about Jordan and pictures please. Can I ask why you decided to go to Jordan? I'd love to go to the Holy Land someday, I think it would be so neat to see where Jesus lived, but I doubt that will ever happen. Tell Bree congrats for me!

Dave and Cam--"it's a small world after all, it's a small, small world" Stephen has family in Pittsburgh too, in the Butler/Cranberry area. His grandparents live there and we go up 2-3 times a year (I wish my in-laws lived there too.... :rolleyes1 ). Stephen also graduated from Geneva College in '98 in Beaver Falls. Even though I didn't grow up there, I still have cravings for Permani Brothers.

Dave--I don't follow college football, so I can't comment on any of the draft picks, but I have to question why in the world their first 3 picks (if I am remembering correctly) were a wide receiver, a safety, and a wide receiver. Okay, Ward is 30, he doesn't have that many seasons left in him ( :sad2: ) and Randle El is gone, so we need to rebuild that position for the future, but what about a power running back? I like Willie Parker, but he doesn't have the bulk or the power to run up the middle and quite frankly Duce was a waste and a disappointment. Hopefully he'll finally be healthy this year, we need him!!!

Who said shoe shopping??? I  shoes and I   shopping for them!!!

Lily--Happy anniversary!! I love to hear about people being married (and still being in love) for a long time!! :lovestruc I've had some pretty good role models, my grandparents were married 50 years when my grandma died and my parents are celebrating 40 years in October.

Dave - Thank you for asking about the smoking. Thankfully I am still smoke free, going on almost a month now!! I hope you shins start feeling better, I know how much that bites.

Cam - Sounds like the kinds of conversations I have with my DH all the time, but unlike your husband mine is like that with EVERYONE.

Lynnda - I have not swam in a lake since I was a child, but let me tell you as soon as I saw your post the memories came back VERY VIVIDLY!! I always hated the smell, the feel, and "O" the taste when it ran into your mouth. YUCK!

Best of Luck to all of you who are running the Minnie this weekend. I am SO jealous. I wish I had known about it in time!!

Well, Yesterday I went to the gym and lifted weights. I did arms, legs, and abs, then 20 minutes cross train reverse on the elliptical. Then this morning I got up and ran 3 miles while pushing the baby and Michael rode his bike. He's getting so good at it too. :cheer2: He pretty much kept pace with me the entire time. I am so proud of my little man. Tomorrow is another day at the Gym. I love my gym days because not only do I get to lift weights too, but I get to hang out in the jacuzzi and steam room when I am done!! :woohoo:

Hello Again Everyone:

Whew, I just had to give a big talk in front of my department for "Grand Rounds". Which is a fancy way of saying seminar in a clinical department. It was an hour long talk about the research I do, and now that it's over I don't feel like doing anything else. I thought I would post here until my next meeting at noon.

Oh I forgot to report that I signed up for my 1st 10K yesterday. It is the Lilac Festival 10K on Sunday, May 21st, and the course goes right in front of my house. It is the 1st 10K I've run in 10 years. Whoo hooo, I'm so excited!!!

Christa- I just wanted to let you know that we organized custom WISH team socks while you were gone. I sent you a PM about it too just in case you don't see this message because you are catching up on everything. You can check out this thread to see if you are interested at all. We have about 20 pairs not spoken for right now.

Great job on your 5 miler. Wow, you picked up some speed while you were gone 9:17 and 8:27 mpm paces? Whew... you're :smokin:

Krista- Cool, I thought you had some sort of Pittsburgh connection. Because you are a Pittsburgher at heart, I got lunch for you. I love, LOVE Primanti Bros. Capicola and cheese for me please.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f135/dparfitt1/primantibrossandwich.jpg
Did you ever see this article in National Geographic about Primanti Brother's? It's pretty good.
http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0308/feature6/index.html
While I also think the Steelers are going to need some receiver help this year to replace Plaxico Burress and Randel El leaving the past two years, I totally agree with you that they needed someone to replace Bettis retiring. I have not been impressed with Duce either since he arrived. I thought he was going to be a good addition, but so far he has been hurt the whole time. They did draft a power RB in the 7th round, Cedric Holmes from Virginia Tech, but I don't think I'm going to hold my breath for him.

Dana- Good for you on the smoking!!! A whole month has gone by already, wow that was fast. That is awesome. Great job!!! :thumbsup2 Good job on your gym training too. I think I need to do some of that myself. I really need to build up my core. Hey, when are you going to post more about Michael's surprise 5th b-day celebration? I loved reading the first couple reports of that trip.

:cool1: GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RUNNING THE MINNIE, FLYING PIG, AND OTHER RACES THIS WEEKEND!!!! :cool1:

Dave -- I must confess that DH was the only person I ever knew from Pittsburgh when I met him. I never visited there (or met his family) until 4 months after we were engaged. He took me to Primanti Brothers that weekend down in the Strip District (though there is now one right off 28, I think, near New Ken), and if I ever had any doubt about marrying a guy from 350 miles away, Primanti Brothers convinced me visits to Pittsburgh would be worth it! :lmao:

Okay, I finally have a real training session to report. I dragged my sorry butt to the gym this morning and got in 5 miles on the treadmill in about 70:45 (which I think is 14:10 pace). I know it is a mental thing, but I really needed to do more than half the distance of the 15K before heading to WDW. I didn't jog at all, because I didn't want to take a chance on killing my hip. Fortunately, I stretched for a while beforehand and it is only slightly sore, not excruciatingly painful, as it has been in the past.

Helen -- yes, I definitely have an excuse to go looking for new shoes, but I still have the widest feet on the face of the earth (I consulted with the Imagineers for Expedition Everest and provided the footprint for the castings for the YETI with my very own right foot ;) ), so shoe shopping really is not a pleasure. Howard calls my feet bear paws. Have you ever seen a bear in shoes? Especially high heels? Yeah, my point exactly. I have a meeting tonight, so I am in those same blasted heels again and am not a happy camper. I am walking around my office barefoot and our staff and my partners are very understanding (I only have to put my shoes on when I leave our suite to go to the ladies room). I am not sure the special olympics summer games organizing committee would appreciate me showing up barefoot, however, so I will eventually have to keep my shoes on. <---- Cam's toesies.

I have learned 2 valuable lessons since the 1/2 and want to share them:
1. Get comfortable shoes for every day -- it doesn't help to own 4 pairs of your favorite running shoes if you can only wear them when you are running!
2. Even if your next event is a few months off, you should still keep up with your training. A taper should not start 3 months before an event. Any loss of cardio capacity IS going to have an impact on your endurance and pace.

Yesterday, Phil and I ran 8 miles of singletrack trail while the boy was in school. after we picked him up, we went to swim. I swam 1 mile. I think i'm signing up for a half ironman in August so I need to practice all the stuff!

Today is a rest/weights day. I can't skip today, as i skipped last wednesday!

Sunny - Maybe it will be worse than i think, but i'm not thinking it will be that bad. I figure i'm looking at between 6:30 and 7:30 as far as time goes. I am guessing that i will walk/run intervals for the run (i really have no idea) I know i can do the swim, and i'm pretty slow on most of the disciplines, so i'm not going into it w/ any stellar expectations, I'd just race to finish! Basically, I'm not that wild!

Krista: Ouch...those knee pains sound awful!!!! Take care of yourself....and good luck on the Flying Pig! I'll definitely be thinking about you!!!!! :grouphug: And hey....what did you think of AI last night?

Dave: :woohoo: Yeahhh....for your 10K. Continued pixie dust for those shins!

I have been training this week. My hips were sore after the 5 Miler on Sunday. But I went to KBX on Monday and it always loosens them up....in the process of nearly killing me LOL! Class was brutal....as my instructor would say...."it was an awesome sweat". Oh yeah! I also ran on Tuesday, but due to time constraints didn't go as long as I would have liked. I did 2.5 miles at a 10:03 mpm. Today was another KBX day....he told us the goal was that we wake up with sore arms tomorrow. Ugh! We did 90 push-ups at the end of class. I HATE push-ups. I guess if it makes my arms look better in a tank-top...so be it. But ask me again tomorrow when I'm unable to lift my arms LOL!

St Anthony's Triathlon race report
1.5 K swim/ 40 K bike/ 10 K run
swim 34:06 2:05/ 100 yds
bike 1:16:23 19.52 mph
run 56:45 9:09/mi
overall 2:52:22

In general, I was pretty disappointed w/ my overall time. I really wanted to break 2:45 but I did the best I could w/ the conditions. The swim was brutal- my wave started at 0830 and according to accuweather at 0900 the winds were 23 mph. What that did to Tampa Bay was create 4-5 ft waves and really bad chop. They pulled between 50-100 competitors from the water depending on what report you read. Here is a link to an interesting article about it in the St Petersburg newspaper: http://www.sptimes.com/2006/05/03/Tampabay/Scary__but_race_went_.shtml According to the race director on the race forum, both competitors that needed resuscitation are Okay.

After I swallowed a portion of and survived Tampa Bay, I headed out on the bike. Discovered pretty quickly that some bonehead had made 2 major errors- not tightening the bolts that hold the handlebars tight in the stem enough when putting it back together from flying with it in the bike box and not riding it after putting it back together until the race or the bonehead would have realized that the handlebars were on the loose side. Yes that bonehead was me. Anyway, other than the handlebars moving every time I needed to hit the brakes or turn, the bike went pretty well. I passed tons of people and had the 33 fastest split of the 157 women in my age group. I didn't push all that hard and didn't really notice the wind as bad as some people commented on. I would have liked to have averaged over 20 mph but overall was fairly happy with my ride.

Run- okay. Really nothing left to push with, think the getting beat up in the swim hit at that point. My average HR for the bike and the run were equal. Ooops, the HR running should be higher. The Garmin actually measured the run at 6.37 miles and said the average pace was 8:55.

Overall, the race was really well done. There were over 3000 finishers and over 600 of them were TnT participants. The expo was tri-geek shopping heaven. Got together for a pasta dinner Saturday night w/ a group from beginnertriathlete.com. There were over 50 people from the site doing the race and probably about 25-30 went to dinner. My next triathlon is the FL 70.3 race at the World May 21st. It's a half ironman so 1.2 mi swim in Bay Lake, 56 mi bike mostly offsite, and then 13.1 mi run around Fort Wilderness. I'm actually tapering for that one unlike the race this past weekend.

Here's a pic Mom took of me coming up on the run finish. I like it because it actually looks like I'm running. I was all impressed that I passed the girl behind me and that she was in my age group until I noticed looking at the pic that her bib was green. I then looked at the number and discovered that she was a relay runner so not one of my competitors after all. Mom pointed out that I still passed her and all she had done was the run.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c103/xterratri/100_0922.jpg

Back to studying- 2 exams down, 2 to go this week, and then 2 next week. Good luck training this week everyone as I slink back into lurk mode.

Anne, I am kind of thinking impetuous is the more appropriate word. Sibling pressure made me do it. :teeth: I was able to get a good long run in last Friday so I think it is doable. I know I won't be able to run the whole way (maybe a 10 and 1 walk) because my running has been pretty spotty since January. I felt mentally drained after the the Disney Marathon and it is just now that I am getting the desire to race/run back. We will see how it goes, and thank you so much for your encouragement! :wave2:

Kathy, sorry about your not being able to participate. Hope you heal and are able to get back on soon.

Ummmm who was it that was talking about a 3 month taper? I am so there. Oh, wait it is a recovery for me not taper. Hmmm I just can't kick it yet. I am just barely doing anything. I don't like this struggle with myself.

Hi all!

Sorry I haven't been around much. I haven't had much time lately. Also, haven't done much... ahem... ANY... running either. :sad2: I'm so scared to start again. DH and I walked last night and we were both complaining of aches and pains...from slow walking!!! Oh I am so dreading starting up the running thing again. And to freak me out even worse I have a 5k this Saturday in my home town. :scared1: I am so scared about anyone from high school seeing me run. I went to a really preppy school where everyone knows everyone's business and all the girls were stick thin. Running this race is going to be a HUGE obstacle for me mentally and emotionally. Please pray that I have the courage to go through with it!

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Oh, I had a super run yesterday! A run where everything just felt perfect. The weather was great, my legs felt pretty good, it seemed like I was floating out there. Boy, that was nice. I did 3.18 miles on the hilly Mt. Hope Cemetery course in 32:16 or 10:08 mpm pace. Did a lot of stretching and icing after the run, but that was the best my shins felt in a long time. Thanks for all the PD everyone has been sending. Maybe it's kicking in. :cool1:

Krista- I hope your knee pain worked itself out. :wizard: PD it gets better for the Pig.

Sunny- Sorry about the food porn, but Primanti's is sooooo good. Good luck with making your decision about the tri. Hope you have a great day no matter what you do.

Colleen- I like your girl's weekend half marathon. Yeah, that sounds different than shopping and drinks. Have a great time and enjoy it. So how long of a trip is it between North Carolina and Vancouver? Make sure you hydrate on the plane.

MelR- Half Ironman? Whew, is that a "training" run too?

Amy- How are your arms? 90 pushups?!? Wow...

Thanks for your nice comment Anne; you're very kind.

Lynne- Wow, your tri sounded like it was brutal conditions. Great job. I am super impressed. Thanks for the picture. You definitely look like you are motoring out there. Good luck at the Minnie. Oh yeah, and good luck with your med school exams - can't believe you are doing so much racing in the middle of exams.

Lily- Don't be too hard on yourself. It sounds like you are listening to your body, and that you really needed the time to recover. Didn't you go Goofy in Janaury, and then do the Columbus half just last month? Doesn't sound like you haven't been doing anything.

Dena- Hang in there and overcome your demons. I'm drinking from a coffee cup right now with a quote from Thoreau on it which says, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined." Also remember the DL>DNF>>DNS!!! How many of those people from your high school are in the DNS category? You are being the best YOU that you can be - be happy with that and don't worry about artificial judgements from outsiders. Go race this Saturday with your :stitch: and have fun with what YOU can do.

Good morning everyone!! :sunny: All of your :wizard: must have worked because my knee feels fine. I think I'm just suffering from the pre race/taper aches and pains. 72 hours from now (8:10) I'll be walking in the Flying Pig, and if I had to guess, I'll be right around 10 miles, depending on when I cross the start line. :goodvibes

Colleen--Are you serious?????  That's awesome that you and your sisters run together. I keep trying to get my sisters to do something, even a a 5K but none of them will (I have 4 sisters). They don't know what they are missing!! Good luck!! :wizard: :wizard:

Lynne--Are you kidding me? You just did a tri, and a tri in not so great conditions. Be PROUD of yourself, we are!!!! I had to chuckle when you said you like that picture because it looks like you are running and your pace was 8:something. If I could run 8:00 miles, I would be ecstatic!!! Good luck on your exams!! :wizard: :wizard:

Melissa--It's official, I think you are  !! A half ironman!! Wow!! So that is what--a 1.2 mile swim, 60 mile bike ride, and a half marathon? Isn't a full ironman 2.4/120/26.2?

Sunny-- :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!

Amy--I wasn't that impressed with AI, very glad that Paris was gone, but I was hoping and hoping that Taylor would be the one going home. I knew it wouldn't happen, but I can't stand him. Did they say what next week's theme is?

Dena--I want you to do that 5K--walk, run, crawl--it doesn't matter because you are DOING it. That's way more than most people can say. You ARE an athlete, don't you dare let anyone tell you otherwise. :wizard: :wizard: for Saturday.

Dena - Good luck on teh 5K! You will be fine. OSmetimes we just have those days! (Yes, I need to take my own advice.)

Colleen - You are absolutely correct! One foot in front of the other is so much more than so many are doing!

Lily - I hear you! I know you will get out there, though! Maybe your body just needs a little more TLC. You did do some Goofy stuff to it this year! ;)

Sunny - :wizard: If anyone can do it, you can! Thta is so byond me!

LOL, yes Krista I am serious. But we don't actually run together in the race or in training because I am in NC and they are all in Canada. I have 7 sisters and 4 of us run (we all just took it up in the last 2 years). I am very proud of my oldest sister, she is 56 never an athlete in her younger years and Vancouver will be her 2nd half marathon. I am hoping to convince her to wog Chicago Marathon with me. My younger sister is the gazelle, sub 4 hour marathoner, my height but 30 pounds lighter. She has ran 5 marathons, but has chosen not in run in Vancouver.

Here is a link to an interesting article about it in the St Petersburg newspaper: http://www.sptimes.com/2006/05/03/Tampabay/Scary__but_race_went_.shtml According to the race director on the race forum, both competitors that needed resuscitation are Okay. :scared1: Holy moly Lynne!!! I just read the St. Pete newspaper article on the tri. Wow, those water conditions sounded incredibly brutal. I'm glad you got through it ok. Yeah, I agree with everyone else that you can't complain at all about your time. :sad2: Whew, I'm super impressed that you made it through that race.

Hi, everyone!
Very limited time, but wanted to WISH everyone a GREAT weekend, whatever you are doing -- 5k, 1/2, full, 15k, cross-training, gardening. . . Whatever you are doing, have a great time!

I don't leave until tomorrow afternoon, but may not be here much as I try to cram in as much work as possible.

Lynne -- Just wanted to congratulate you on an awesome performance! That picture of you is wonderful! Good luck with exams, boards, life! :grouphug:

Good morning everyone!!

First things first: GOOD LUCK MINNIE RUNNERS!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: We want reports. Lots of them!!

Christa-- Good to see you back!!! Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip. I hope to get back to Jordan again some day-- fascinating place. Tell Bree Congrats from all of us!

Lynne-- Yowza!! Be proud of your accomplishment!! :thumbsup2 I know first hand that swimming in those kind of swells is kind of like being a cork on the water... no way to recover after getting the beat up on the second two legs.
Congrats!

Colleen-- Enjoy your trip!! I hear Vancouver is wonderful!!

I am sad to report that I have not been running much lately. I have been doing a great job with crosstraining in the gym, but things are so hectic I haven't been able to get outside like I want to. I am hoping to get a couple of good runs in before the week is out. Unfortunately the next couple of weeks are going to be even more hectic... I'm going to have to build these runs into my schedule and stick to it. :thumbsup2

Happy training all!

Hello everyone. This has to be a "drive-by post" as I am so far behind at work I don't know whether to laugh at the ridiculousness of it or cry at the futillity.

Had a great session this morning. I've upped my intervals again and - much to my amazement - I felt really really strong! :thumbsup2

Just really quickly....

Lynne - That's quite an accomplishment! Don't you downplay it girl. We are all so proud of you! :cheer2:

Dave - I'm so happy to hear you had an excellent run! You really deserve it after all the time you spent icing. :woohoo:

Cam - :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for Sunday!

This week I did a great 5 mile 4r/1w on Sunday (completed in 49:24), did a hilly 40 minute 4r/1w (41:21) on Monday, took a day off Tuesday and cross trained on the elliptical last night for 40 minutes. I'm going to do another 40 minute 4r/1w tonight and then take Friday night off (or maybe do the elliptical again). Then it's off to my second 5k event Saturday morning.

Everyone is doing so great and definitely staying busy!! Best of luck to everyone racing this weekend, especially those Minnie competitors!

Dana - Just wanted to congratulate you on being smoke free for a month! You are past the hardest part now and should be very, very proud of yourself! Way to go.

Dave - You signed up for a 10k, that's awesome! My first will be on July 4th so you have to give us a race report! And congrats on the run that you had...there's nothing like the feeling you get after completing a great run!

Colleen - OMG...."hmm...wonder what I'll do this weekend....wash the car, no....take a walk, no....oh yeah, I'll sign up and do a half marathon!" You go girl! Please let us know how Vancouver is....my family wants to vacation there at some point.

Amy - 90 push ups?!? You're a BEAST!! I'm lucky to get to 10!

Lynn - Wow. You should not be disappointed in the least! I read the story about the water and you should be very proud of just finishing!! I really admire anyone who competes in a Triathalon, bad weather or not. You look like a real pro in the pic!

Dena - 5k this weekend!! Good luck!! You'll do great....don't worry about what others think of you. Just remember that you are out there doing it and that's something for you to be proud of and for others to be jealous of. Let us know how it went!

Kevin - I wouldn't fret about not running...at least you got your cross training in during your busy schedule.

Now back to digesting what happened on Lost last night...OMG!! Oh yeah...now that Paris is gone, I'd like to see Elliot go next so we can have Taylor vs. Kat vs. Chris..that will be a great finale!

Have a good week!

Blech  It's raining here again. The rivers are too fast to paddle and the trails are too slick to run. I rode the bike on the trainer (worse than the TM!!!) for 50mins, doing climbs during the commercials and then ran 3 on the road in the rain. I think I'm going to shower now and get the rainy sweat off of me!!!!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Can't wait to read the various race reports!!

I bought a new pair of New Balance yesterday, but having walked a mile on my tm, I realized that they weren't a good fit and took them back. I ended up with a pair of Adidas in a half size larger than the NB. I have the worst time finding a pair of walking sneakers. I'm hitting the tm after I post to test the Adidas.....hopefully I'll have them broken in before my 10k on Memorial Day. ;)

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

So after a great run on Wednesday I tried to do an easy run yesterday and it wasn't happening. I took the princesses princess: princess: to the local park. We've had a routine where I run around the 0.75 mile perimeter loop and they play on the playground. We each have a "walkie talkie" so they can get in touch with me. My legs and shins felt sore, but I figured they would warm up. It took a lot to get geared up to go and get the princesses princess: princess: out there, we get out there, I'm warming up and the walkie talkie goes off. "Can we go home, get our kite, and come back?" I said no, and went to start my run - legs hurt but I'm used to that by now it usually goes away. 1/2 mile into my run walkie talkie goes off. "Daddy, I slid down the slid and scraped my knee at the bottom." OK, I'm coming right over. To make a long story short I didn't get my run in. To be honest, I could have stayed, the princesses princess: princess: would have been fine, but I wasn't "feelin' it" yesterday. I just didn't have the energy to get through the initial uncomfortable 1st mile of my run until my legs stopped hurting. Oh well, I went home and iced. Maybe I just need to run every other day for a while. I'm trying to decide whether to go for a run today or do my 12:00p yoga class. I haven't gone to yoga for 3 weeks, and I'm thinking my legs could use the break. I have a 5 mile run with my group tomorrow.

Scott- just wanted to say that I watch LOST too. I'm not a religious follower of the show because it moves sooooooo slowly :snail:, but I was pretty surprised by how the show ended Wednesday night. I didn't see that coming at all. My DW didn't stay up through the whole show, and when I went to bed and told her what happened she was really surprised. She watched the last 5 minutes of the show on the internet yesterday.

Dave - With that 5 miler scheduled for tomorrow I would give your poor shins a break and take the Yoga class. The stretching should help and a break before a longer run is normally a good thing.

I'm still a novice at this so I am sure others will be along with better more experienced advise but just in case that's what I would do :goodvibes

Hey everyone. I have not been on this site at all this week and I have no clue what is going on with everyone. I feel bad for that, but life went wacky this week. I ended up working very late 2 days, then had a class to take on Wednesday. I woke up super early Wednesday morning and decided to do a 2 mile wog. Got back all energized and my little 3 year old came out of her room screaming... she was having an asthma attack brought on by her allergies. The pollen count is at an all time high right now. She was coughing so hard she vomitted. So, dealing with that, trying to get to my class which was a drive, it was nuts.

I haven't ran since Wednesday morning. Life is totally exhausting me, and last night I became ill with a tummy bug. So with my very first ever 5K tomorrow.... I am so scared I won't be able to do this. My ankle aches, my belly is still upset... OH NO!

AND, as of last week there were only 11 people registered. How can that be. I checked again on Tuesday, it's up to 22... wow it doubled. The race was on the news this morning, so I pray that more people have signed up since. I just hope there are lots of procrastinators. I am a slow slow slow runner, and the fewer people there are, the more obvious that I will be 10 minutes behind the rest of the pack!!

Have a great weekend all... and GOOD LUCK at any races that are to be run this weekend!!!! I can't wait for the reports!!

Just because we have the laptop in the room and I can... we're at WDW!!!! We picked up our packets for the 5K this afternoon, spent the afternoon at AK, and are back in the room getting ready for dinner at Boma tonight. I can't believe that my race will be over by this time tomorrow and we'll be at EoS!

The good news is that the calf and shins haven't hurt at all, even after walking all over the park all day, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be okay tomorrow. But it is really HOT!

Good luck to everyone running other places and training. We'll have lots of stories from the Minnie.

Jackie...aw man...if I'd known you were going to eat at Boma tonight, I woulda stayed later ;)

I picked up packets for me and DD13 this afternoon. Ran into Nancy (perfectmatch300) and her DH on my way in :) The Expo is quite a bit smaller than the marathon expo, only about 1/4 of the floor in the Milk House was full. Our 'official' shirts are black singlets with the Minnie Marathon logo...very cool! I did pick up two Minnie pins and a subscription to HerSports magazine.

And can I say the medals are very cool! They actually have a metal medal for the 5K that looked great. I'm getting pretty excited now...going to the Expo really made it all come together.

Race report when we get back! Next week's thread may be a little late on Sunday

I'm Back I'm Back I'm Back!!!! I finished my first 5K... Hey I finished my first race EVER! I still have a lot of weight to lose, so this was a major accomplishment!

The 5K was harder than I thought. 1/2 mile into it, there was a strong wind in my face for about a mile. And of course the wind was full of pollen, so now I am feeling sick and coughing a lot!! There ended up being only 28 timed racers... but I did not finish last... I was 2nd to last. There were A LOT of very fast runners, something I will never be, nor want to be. The course started at the YMCA, then headed toward the river trail. Most was paved, but there was about 3/4 mile that was all dirt and gravel trail. It was uneven and bumpy and hard for me to jog on because I was afraid of tripping.

I finished with an average of 12.5 minute miles, so the 5K (3.1 miles) was finished in 39 minutes (and 13 seconds). Hubby and the girls were at the finish line and when I rounded the corner everyone started cheering and I could hear my 5 1/2 year old screaming "GO MOMMY"... it brought tears to my eyes as I crossed the finish line. I DID IT!!!

Colleen-- what a great idea, I hope your race goes great!

Dave-- I checked out the T-shirt thread and like your idea. I will get back there soon.

I've hardly been running but I've been doing some other killer workouts. I did a 60 minute spin class yesterday set to 80's punk rock. Spinning to the Ramones is a killer workout! :rotfl2:

I DID START!

I DID FINISH!

I DID NOT FINISH LAST!!!!

While I am very slow compared to most of you, I did manage to pull off a sub 18 min mile pace. That, for me is good. I even managed to jog across the finish line! The bad news - BLISTERS!!! My favorite, tried and usually true shoes and socks gave me blisters! At EOS I was told that they are badges of honor, but ouch, it hurts to walk now!

DH did very well. I'm really proud of him. He went ahead of me and finished at a 13:22 min/mile pace and walked the whole way. I knew he was much faster than me. Now I know how much faster!

I am really tired now. Time for some sleep. Will check back over the weekend.

Good luck to everyone who has races on Sunday!

Dena - How did the run go?

I totally understand how you feel about high school - My high school days weren't the best but that is the past and in the past couple of years my husband and I have bumped into a few people at stores and he couldn't believe that I was the same age as some of these people (they just didn't age well).

Let us know how you made it through the emotions and the race ---I hope it was a positive experience for you.

Let us know how you made it through the emotions and the race ---I hope it was a positive experience for you. Dena- I forgot about your 5k at your old high school. I hope it went well too. Let us know how it went.

Jodi and Amy- :wave2: How did your training go for both of you this weekend?

I had my group run yesterday. We did 5.05 miles in 51:14 min or 10:09 mpm pace. My splits were:
Mile 1: 9:51
Mile 2: 9:37
Mile 3: 11:30 (all uphill and some of it really steep)
Mile 4: 9:45
Mile 5: 10:07
I was really happy with the time and the run. That was the farthest I've run in about 10 years. I felt pretty good. I was glad that I had 2 rest days before my run and just did yoga on Friday. I think that gave my legs a break. I had a little soreness in my shins, but it was nothing unbearable.

I really think I need some new shoes. I've been reading online and my shoes are just cushioned with little medial support, and I think that's killing my shins. But I know I'm just being cheap because I just bought my shoes in March and have only run for 2 months in them. Plus, I bought the Garmin and new prescription sunglasses and I'm having trouble thinking I need to shell out another $100+ for a different pair of shoes.

Hope everyone's runs went well. I can't wait to hear about them.

We finished the week with 40min on the elliptical and 1 hour of 'The Pump' on Thursday, 55min on the elliptical on Friday, and 40min/4 miles and 45min of Badminton today. For the next three weeks we'll do a bit more running than usual as I intend to do the JPMCCC 3.5miles in Frankfurt in <24min. This means I have to be slightly under 7 minutes per mile.
I also started looking for some 10K races in our vicinity to get prepared for the Race for the Taste. We've never run 10K competetive, and I've never done it under the Florida sun und in that humidity. Our aim is to do the 10K in <50min/7.5mpm, but to do that we must learn to adjust our speed to the distance. Especially I tend to dash off too fast from the startline ;)

I saw a lot of posts on this thread with people talking about shoes, which makes me want to explain our shoe-strategy. DW and I never use the same shoes twice for two consecutive days, to allow the shoes to 'recover'. Both of us have two pairs for ourtdoor running, two pairs for indoor running, and two pairs for crosstraining. For running we prefer Nike Shox, but for outdoors I also have some nice Adidas. For crosstraining (Weights/elliptical/Badminton) we prefer Reeboks. We buy up to four new pairs each year for each of us. Good sportshoes are expensive in Germany, but as we usually travel to Thailand in the spring and to the US in autumn we buy most of our shoes there. Rule of thumb for sportshoes is that they should not be used for more than 200 hours. DW is an orthopedic nurse and so we stick to that rule as we both don't want to become patients of her boss :p
According to our training log of the last five years we work out an average of 250 days per year, which is 400 to 500 hours per year. This means we're 'burning' at least two pairs per person annually. We make a strict distinction between indoor and outdoor shoes as we consider it icky to use outdoor shoes in the gym.
Neither of us had any sport related injuries/ailments for the last five years. We consider this is at least partially due to our 'shoe strategy', but we also do a lot of stretching and pump a lot of iron as a precaution.

Hey Dave,
that's cool!!! Last time I was at WDW I met several people wearing the 2003 T-Shirt the same day I wore mine - That was fun as we greeted each other.
How many people will participate in Rochester? We plan to exceed the number of 60,000 runners this year, we had slightly more than 58,000 in '05. When I first participated in '95 we were less than 3,000.
Usually our race is mid to end of june, but with the Soccer World Cup starting 06/09 and lasting til 07/09 we have to run earlier this year. We already have daytime temps of 26C/79F, so it could be a 'hot race' ;)
