Were looking at doing a day or two at Universal before heading to Disney. Last year we stayed at a Holiday Inn on some very touristy(ie. neon, souvineer shops, tacky) and it was a mistake. We are looking for something clean, possibly walkable to the parks, and relatively cheap, onsite would be too expensive. Any suggestions?

Try Sheraton Studio City through Priceline for around $50. I'd hate the walk back though.

Best Western is nice and has free breakfast. This is the one located directly across from the park. You'll hear about the Movieland BW. I've stayed there too. That one is not within walking distance, and doesn't have free breakfast, so that's why it's cheaper.
If you want to splurge a little more, the Amerisuites will give you more room, and has an even better breakfast.

Thanks for the replies. I was told there were hotels close, but ended up on Sandusky(sp?) Ave, not sure of the name. Drove through Universal and saw some hotels. Nothing like the ones in your pictures, though. We must of came out on the wrong side.
