Here's a great question from my 18yo DS..... How often do they spot or have to remove an Alligator from WDW canals/lakes/waterways? Any ideas?
I think he's thinking that a good push in the one of canals would be a great prank to play on his brother ;)
HOWEVER I told him that there is the possibility that there could be an alligator in one of them. He doesn't believe it! He said he wouldn't want to have his brother get eaten, just wet.
Oh teenagers are sooo fun! :Pinkbounc

I know they are everywhere But the Bigger thing is the bacteria that is in the water Thats why they don't let you swim in the waterways.

Tell him to come to South Florida...it's alligator mating season right now and we've been seeing "captures" on the news almost everyday. A friend of mine went to Naples this weekend and said they saw a lot of them on the side of the highway (not sure if they were dead or alive)....

Anyone know the answer to the OP's original question about how often they are captured/removed from the canals? My DS8 would be very interested in using this info to scare his DS6.

Speaking of gators....There was a big alligator spotted in the neighborhood right next to ours the day before yesterday. (BTW-We're a little over an hour away from WDW-South/East of there). Anyway, All of the lakes near us are connected....so I wouldn't be surprised if he made his way over to the lake in our back yard through the pipes one of these days. (From what I've heard from others it Has happened before!) My dd's Love(d) (Notice Past tense!) to play out by "our lake". I am totally freaked out about this sighting cause those gators can be MEAN! I can't imagine walking out into our back yard & an alligator being right there!

Not sure of how often but they can't or won't remove them from property until they reach 5 feet.
They then move then to their wildlife reserve in cental FL.
I have the one living between Fronteirtown and Tom Sawyer island on video somewhere.

Got a chance to see the gator at CSR. He was caught and moved while we are here.

Thanks for the info and the pic's!!!
I love the 'Tick Tock...'! :teeth:
The pictures should be all I need to convince him of the fact that there ARE alligators in WDW.
I think he's of the mind, as many people are, that nothing bad ever happens at WDW. While I wish it was true, the logical part of me know's it's not.
I wish I could see the whole world through Disney glasses, the magic would never end!

If the gator is larger than 6 feet they are destroyed. They have the ability to find their way home. So they may say they have relocated since that sounds nicer.

Just before our last trip to Florida, a twelve year old boy died from swimming in a Florida lake and being infected with meningitis from an amoeba that got to his brain through his nasal passages. That is why there is no swimming in the lake between The Swan and Dolphin, and why it's a bad idea to push a sibling into a drainage ditch. The warm weather makes the water just right for all kinds of nasty things to live in it. Can't your son just shortsheet a bed or tap on the back of his brother's doom buggy on the Haunted Mansion? :confused3

Alligators are in a lot of places in Orlando. like NYC has rats, Orlando has alligators lol. my fiance told me about one time their flight was even delayed because there was an alligator on the runway. so tell him not to push him in! he might get eaten! and you don't want that to happen on your vacation!

Thanks to all who've responded to the 'alligator' question!
I truly don't think that my son would actually push his brother in the canel, if any of you have teenage boys, much of the time what they say is for 'shock' value and to see if they can get a rise out of Mom.
The boys are 18 and 16 and truly are good kids, it's just sometimes (esp. the 18 yr old), they are way too naive regarding the world.
They both are as excited about our WDW trip as me (well maybe not quite as excited, they'd probably be more excited if they were sure to meet girls there :smooth: ).
Thanks again!!!

I have seen small aligators in the lake at Coronado Springs on two different trips. I have also seen a very large alligator in the pond outside the railroad track between Space Mountain and the Main Street Railroad Station. After that I don't even dangle my feet in the water.

OK, as of a sudden, I am not all that excited anymore to go to Florida...
Bugs, gators, overgrown mice, ... Oh, wait, the mice are the reason why I'm going

When we go, we are always looking to "spot gators"... On the ride from the airport we usually see one or two... We usually look around the waterways. Most times we find them sunning themselves...
We've seen them "sunning themselves" in Downtown Disney at the exit.. Also floating around in the swamp area between the boardwalk and back entrance to Epcot.

Awe I have seen a gator at WDW or Orlando wild yet. I would love to see one living wild. We might be doing the boggy creek airboat ride or an excursion so I can see an alligator. I love reptiles. :lovestruc

Over the years we have seen small gators in the canal at Downtown Disney. I have seen many on the golf courses. We saw a 14 foot one removed from a pond on the Palms Golf Course and last year we counted 5 on Eagle Pines Golf Course. Never have seen an aggressive one.

Was There 2 weeks ago and I think I saw the same Gator at CSR, he just hung around watching everyone watch him but being a Florida Native they are pretty much everywhere and you just never know so tell the Son not a good Idea and I agree with everyone else on the Bacteria in the water, not good.... I took pics but they are on my Phone and have no Idea of how to post but I am almost sure its the same gator, Here in Florida they show up in your pools and back yards.... and they are big..........and mean and they can try to bite you or eat a pet which unfortunatley has happened.........

University of Florida...Florida GATORS! There is a reason, there are lots of gators in Florida! Almost every body of water will have a gator. Some are small...some are quite large. Disney has had gators since they opened. Right now and for a couple of months, I think, is their mating season. That can make them more aggressive. Just be aware.
You really won't have a problem...respect them.

I'm glad my son (10) doesn't know about the alligators on the golf course!
I always tell him he doesn't need to play golf at WDW, he can play golf at home. If he knew he might come across an alligator on the golf course , he would want to go golfing even more just for the chance to see one.

Being from "up north" I could use some info (warning probably a VERY dumb question)...
Why don't the crocs (or worse yet...DO THEY REALLY??) come up on to the beach at some where like the Poly??
:lmao: Already laughing at myself for sounding so "not from FL" :lmao:
We saw the one hanging out under the bridge by the walkway in frontierland (the water between Frontierland and Tom Sawyer Island).
The stupid people were feeding him turkey legs....ugh.... :furious:
Sorry I can't post the pics but it was before we were "digital".

In January there was a good size gator sunning himself in the pond area across the street from ASMu, we saw it from the bus on our way to Movies. We, being stupid tourist, were thrilled, not something one sees along the roadway in Nevada, that is for sure. We would never go near one, but really cool to view from afar.
My inlaws live in a retirement community in Bradenton, FL. and they have had a resident gator in the ponds on the property for years. We have never let the kids go near any water in FL. unless it is clorinated and contained on all sides with cement walls, preferably with a lifeguard in attendance! Even the beach gives me the willies cause of the sharks!
Living in a land locked state has it's advantages..................

Have they ever been known to come up on the beach like at Poly, GF or WL - would they be more likely to be out of the water in the day or dark??

they want nothing to do with you. we've got a couple in our backyard lake, they dart whenever they see a person.
