Just wanted to show y'all my Easter basket.

http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/data/500/77486PICT0230-med.JPG

If you look in the basket on the bottom, you'll see Tigger making himself comfortable.

It's been a rough week around here. DH's job is okay, but there's still alot of tension around his office. We picked up the dog from the kennel on Mon with some kind of weird doggie respiratory infection. She's better, but still sneezing. I've been in the ER and my doc's office this week with horrible reflux that's made it difficult to function (and run). Yesterday was the first LR I've missed in over a year. My parents were supposed to come up for Easter today, but mom called yesterday saying they were both sick.

I'm a little up in the air on the Minnie. My foot's still giving me a lot of problems...maybe 3 races in 4 months was too much for my first running season. We found out DH's company's big fundraiser of the year is the night before the Minnie, so he won't be able to go. We've recruited Grandma to come up with us and watch the wild todd while DD13 and I do the Minnie. I've decided I'm not planning for a PR for this race...just going to go up and have fun with it and get that Minnie medal. DD13 is already planning to wear her medal to school the next day and talking about starting a running club at school that can train for the WDW half and/or the Sarasota half.

We managed about 2 miles this morning trying out the new jogging stroller. DD13 is still having ankle problems and I still can't push with the breathing because of the reflux. We're trying to get it pulled together for the last LR next weekend, then start the taper and race!

Claire...congrats on your race!

Kim...good luck at Boston!

Sunny...are you running Boston too?

Scott...was your 5K this weekend?

I'm not sure of the entire spiritual makeup of the team, so Happy Easter, Blessed Passover, Happy Festivus, etc.... :grouphug:

Mel-I love your easter basket and that tigger seems to love it too! Tigger looks a lot like my Pooh Bear. I'm glad your DH's job is ok and I hope you are feeling better soon.

Happy Holiday to everyone!!

Mine will be slower than I'd like. Had a 15k training run on Sat for the upcoming Indy Mini. About 1/2 mile out, I caught a rock with right foot and went down hard. Left a lot of skin from left knee on pavement. By mile 6 I couldn't run and walked the rest of it. Training staff at finish line said it was sprained foot not ankle. Supposedly that is better. Still painful but she said I should be able to get back to regular training in couple days. It's pretty stiff today, so we'll see. Easter basket had a Garmin 205 in it, so will be hard not to push it too fast. Can't wait to get out there & really try it out.

Mel: :grouphug: that you you get to feeling better. :wizard: Love the Easter basket :thumbsup2

I read this as:
"hand sanitizers in the potpourris"---
Yep--they do pamper us at Disney. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Glad to hear the CCC is relatively flat---what about the bridge?

The Crescent City Classic (10K) just goes from Jax in the French Quarter, along Poydras, along Esplanade, and into City Park (wiggles in front of the museum for forEVer) ending at Tad Gorley Stadium. So the biggest bridges are in City Park and are about as big as AK bridges.
The Crescent City Connection in the fall (Labor Day weekend I think) is a 4 mile run that makes ample use of over passes and the Crescent City Connection (aka da big bad bridge).
At some point they ran a race across the Causeway, I'm guessing a marathon considering its 24 miles, but I dont think that's an annual event (mum remembers only that it really disrupted traffic). That would have included some nasty overpasses and lots of sun.

....hmmm thinking on the hose thing: do yall think i can get the residents along my regular jogging route to come and spray hoses on me on a regular basis?...they can even rotate turns --see??? I can too compromise :teeth: :rolleyes1

Hey everyone!! Hope that everyone had a great Easter, we just got home from my parents. Ugh, I ate WAY too much, it'll be easy for me to exercise tomorrow to burn off all those calories!! ;) Yesterday I walked 10 miles and it was great, my time was 2:22, with my 5 mile split being 1:11--pretty even, huh? This week I think I'm going to do 4-5-4-11, I officially should be tapering, but I think I'm going to just do a one week taper, I really don't feel like I need to taper for 2 weeks. Training for the half seems a lot easier than training for the Disney half, I'm not sure if it's because I'm walking this one and I ran Disney or because I know what to expect, or maybe a combination of both.

Carrie--That's great about your FIL. How is doing this week?

Sunny--Yay!! It sounds like your back. :cheer2: You get tomorrow off for the Boston marathon? That's pretty cool and lucky for you. Aren't you doing a race tomorrow? Or was that over the weekend?

Kim--Good luck for the Boston!!

Lily--Good to see you back, we've missed you! I'm very excited about the Flying Pig 1/2--21 days from today!

Taz4disney-- :grouphug: you sound like me!! I have 2 lovely scars on my knees from running wipeouts. The worse one was last December on my 10 miler training for the Disney half, I fell and busted my knee on mile 4 and to run 6 miles with a busted knee and blood running down my knee. :wizard: for a quick recovery!!

Nancy--I  Davy Jones!! I missed the Monkees phenomenon in the 60's/70's, but I can remember watching the Monkees tv show on reruns. I had no idea that I was watching the show 15-20 years after it first aired and I had the BIGGEST crush on Davy Jones. In fact the Monkees greatest hits is one of my favorite cd's.

Mel--Your Easter basket is wonderful! I'm glad that your DH still has a job, but :wizard: for the whole situation. Weirdness in the office is never good!!

Melissa--That is wonderful about Hines Ward, I didn't hear that. I love him!! I think my Hines has some pretty big shoes to fill!!!

I'll talk to everyone tomorrow!!

Mel--sorry that you have been sick. Hope you feel better soon.

If you are not up for it--bag it if necessary. 9 miles is grueling-especially if you aren't at the top of your game.

Note of caution to everyone--especially the newbies (i.e. me and those who have as little experience as I, > 2 years).

In one of our clinics--we have a Personal Trainer who comes and teaches us how to stretch. And all apart of the training is advising us on injury prevention. Then she talked about a problem with her foot where she decided to do a marathon anyway. (I know Minnie isn't a 'thon--but the point still applies). Well--she finished..but did damage the foot permanently. She can "only" do half-marathons now...and usually it is part of a half-ironman. So sure--she can still compete. But the point is to watch yourself--and make the right judgement calls and as part of that--ask yourself "Is doing this one event---the most important thing ever and do I want it to be my last event?" If the answer is yes--time to reevaluate everything.

I am sure you will be fine.

But this is how I got my answer that I shouldn't do it--but of course the decision was easier...you don't train--kind of a no brainer on that.

And WOW---we have Boston runners in the house??

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to check in and say that I won't be keeping up for awhile. I am sans computer at home. My laptop is getting fixed and they said it may be 3-4 weeks. At least it is still under warranty.

Anyway, my heel and sciatica is still bothering me and I haven't been to see an orthopod yet. I am planning on next week. I have stuck to the pool and biking as much as I can.

On a positive note, the family and I are off to a long weekend in DW in 2 weeks. Too bad the trip was planned before I realized about the Minnie, or I would be meeting up with all of you. I am just 1 weekend to early!

Best wishes to everyone - Hoping training is smooth for the nexst few weeks. I will check in from work if I ever get an extra second while there.

Boy am I lost without my computer at home! :)

Okay--I'm a big ol' dork. I had Charleston on teh brain when I read that--that would be the Cooper River BRIDGE run. Yes--Dork is tattooed on my forehad.

Sounds great.

I do think the marathon they had was a couple of months ago. It was to be their first MAJOR event since Katrina. It is an annual event I think. Just remember that they were really trying to get runners--even if they just "registered" and got their shirt in the mail. (i.e.--donate an entry fee to keep the event afloat).

Hey guys! Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. I know I'm not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow. Wow, it's getting so nice outside and even though it's great weather for running, I know there are a million other things I need to be doing (like putting down the mulch, planting shrubs, edging, etc, etc). It's funny, I was running tonight and saw a guy stretching out in front of his house after running and looked at his lawn and it was way longer than either of his neighbors. I think that's a trademark of athletes, right? Let the yard go, throw on the running shoes and go work out. One of these days I'm going to mow the lawn and find leftover power bar wrappers and water bottles out there. :)

Kim--good luck tomorrow! We'll all be thinking of you.

Mel--nice Easter basket! Hope you're feeling better soon.

taz4disney--get well soon. I'm jealous of your Garmin 205. I've got the 201 and would really love to upgrade to the 205 or 305. I have a friend who's running Indy, too, and he's pretty excited for it. It sounds like a really fun race. Hope you have a great time.

Lisa--thanks for the advice on running events with injuries. I know I have a hard time turning down even a 5K when I'm sidelined with an injury, but you're right, when you put it into perspective, it's not worth risking serious injury for any one event.

Well, it was a good weekend for workouts. I ran 11 miles on Saturday with my cousin (he and I along with Krista are doing the Flying Pig Half in three weeks). Biked 18 miles today and followed it up with a 3 mile run. I'm trying to get back into tri shape before my first one in June. Question for all you cross training swimmers--do you guys do most of your training in the pool doing laps or does anyone swim in open water? I've got a friend at work who does a lot of tri's and he tries to swim in open water as much as possible but I've been happy doing it at the pool (a lot more convenient than finding open water available for swimming distances). Either way, I really need to work on my swimming. It's been a few months since I've done serious laps and I'm really feeling it now.

Anyway, have a great week everyone and enjoy the spring weather. Talk to you later!

Steve

Sunny--Yay!! It sounds like your back. :cheer2: You get tomorrow off for the Boston marathon? That's pretty cool and lucky for you. Aren't you doing a race tomorrow? Or was that over the weekend?
!!

hee hee. Tomorrow is a state holiday in celebration of The Revolutionary War which began here in Lexington (Concord claims otherwise). It's called Patriot's Day and there are a lot of men wearing tricon hats and carrying muskets, etc. I'm running a 5 miler in Lexington. Go Marathoner's :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Mel-- love your basket :)

Patriot's Day (http://nationallancers.org/pday.html)

You can read about it here. When you get to the part about the Lexington Battle Green you'll know where my race is! It starts on the Battlegreen. The Battlegreen also has a rock with my favorite quote on it:

"Stand you ground. Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here." Captain Parker.

Ok, that's your history lesson for today ;)

Hope everyone had a happy holiday! There was too much Easter candy in mine! :earseek: I sent as much as possible home with our friends, and I am glad they forgot the browines they were going to bring!

I took today off for the holiday, that is if you call cleaning and cooking and then cleaning some more a day off! I'll be back to my routine tomorrow after my day of "rest" today. :teeth:

Chimera Nice Easter basket! Far better for you than what was in mine! Tigger looks like he has found a home. Will he be going jogging with you? Glad to hear DH's job will still be there. Hope your foot will be OK for the Minnie.

Kim Good luck on the Boston!

Sunny Good luck on the 5 miler in Lexington! Sounds like the entire Boston area will be running!

taz4disney Hope your knee is feeling better. Last time I went down (which was in my 1st ever 5K last spring) I was fortunately wearing a knee support so it protected my knee, but certainly not my pride.

Krista Sounds like you had a great walk! As for Davy Jones, I DO remember him from the '60's. One of the reasons I love the Flower Power concert series so much is that I get to see so many of the groups who were popular then. Some of them I was able to see back then, but most of them I have not been able to see before. Of course, we are all a bit older now, and a lot of the groups are not all the original members, but it's still fun to see them. I have all this year's concerts on my calendar and will be at as many of them as I can! :flower1: :daisy:

Maggie Good to hear from you. Hope you have the laptop back soon. Get yourself to that ortho!

Steve I do like to swim in open water whenever I can, but you're right about it baing hard to find a good place to swim any kind of distance. It is a much different feeling than swimming in a pool, though, especially if your race will include an ocean swim where you will have waves and currents to contend with. Overall, I think training in a pool is fine, but I would try and do some open water work if you can, especially if you are not used to swimming anywhere but in a pool.

Morning Everyone,

Just a quick post before I start work today. Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter.

I didn't get as much training in as I hoped but I did do quite a bit of cross-training on Saturday with my personal trainer (she kicked my butt). Beyond that I didn't do anything else. I was hoping to get in some running but my DH and I had been traveling to relatives homes all weekend.

Today, I will be doing a run after work. Today, I am expecting to be yet another busy day.

I'll check in all of you later on.

Just want to clarify that some people can run and/or walk with injuries--but instead of being a hero--best to have medical okay on that. I don't recall the PT's story exactly--but I think she basically was saying she went against her better judgement. I only ran post surgery b/c I had a surgeon and a PT that gave me permission to do so. It would have been better to wait as with any injury. The key is--will you cause further damage by doing so.

Don't want to sound too preachy :guilty: .

Stephen and other aspiring triathletes- about open water swimming Nancy makes a good point but...the off shore buoy here is registering water temp at 42.8 F. That's up almost 3 degrees in the last 2 weeks but is still quite a ways from what I'll swim in even with the wetsuit. So consequently, I'm getting a lot of pool time and will continue to do so. My first open water swim of the year will either be the day before St Anthony's in Tampa Bay(last buoy temp was 73) or the morning of St Anthony's so in either 12 or 13 days. I will then come back north and back into the pool.

The tri club's open water swims start Friday mornings at 0600 in May but they are lake rather than ocean and lakes in general warm up quicker. Open water swimming for practice can be a challenge because of safety issues. You either need to do it at a guarded area, with a group, or with a safety buddy in a kayak/canoe. So don't feel bad about swimming in the pool almost exclusively. Many triathletes do it and do fine.

Still training consistently. Swim M, W, F, bike W, Th, Sat, run T, F, Sun this past week. Did what I think was my longest ride since Ironman Lake Placid in 2003 on Saturday- just shy of 62 miles. Scheduled for 80 this weekend followed immediately by a 3 mile run and then another 14 mile run the next day. Then it's taper time. No, not really, it's just I'll be racing St Anthony's Olympic distance(1.5 K/40 K/10 K) the following weekend, and then the Minnie marathon is screwing up my training the weekend after that and then it really is taper time. I would love to figure out how to get a 50 mile bike in the day before Minnie but it seems to be logistically more trouble than it's worth.

PD for illness and injury :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:
Good luck to the Patriot's Day racers!

Wow! It is only Monday a.m. and we are already on page 2! Even when we are relatively quiet, we are a chatty bunch!

So, still not much to report with pride here. I did get out for what should have been a LW Friday a.m., but one of my partners showed up at the track and when he was done, joined me for what he called a "cool down" before I was done. It felt kind of awkward to keep going, so I ended early at about 4.6 miles and did some stretching. The good thing is I stretched my hamstrings quite a bit before going out, and my hip barely even twinged. So, I am convinced that is the answer. The funny thing is my dr. had told me in August that he was impressed with how flexible I was and that my hamstrings weren't tight at all. Now, all of the sudden, it is an issue for every workout. Oh, on Friday my pace was seconds above 15:00 or many seconds below for every split. Good thing, considering I've been doubting my ability to maintain 15:00 for the Minnie.

Saturday I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the bike. The bad thing is I ate way too much this weekend.

Emotional eating stinks! Sunny, I think we need the Training Eating Accountability thread again. :grouphug: Friday was the one year anniversary of my Dad's death and yesterday the anniversary of the funeral. My Mom died 16 days later, 2 days before her 63rd birthday and a week before Mother's Day. This has been so rough, especially in light of all the wonderful things happening in the kids' lives -- so much to share with Nana and Grandpa, and they did it at the cemetary Friday. Hoping the next couple weeks won't be as rough.

Going back to WW meeting tomorrow night, mostly to help DD get a handle on healthy eating and to take off some weight before college, but also because mine has been so relatively stable for so long. I need a jump start, that's for sure.

Hi all! Works busy adn I'm moving very slowly due to lack of work. SO, I'll try to catch up later, just wanted togive you an update on my FIL. Thank you to all of you for your rprayers, thoughts, and support.

It was a general upswing over the weekend, but still had some scares. Yesterday was ll good news. Very appropriate for teh day. Worked hard over the weeknd doing MILs Easter shoppign for teh little ones and catching up their laundry so that SIL3 could get to the hospital. SUnday am, I went ot see my parents and dh was able to get away and come for dinner. When he was with his family who were all rather dismal, he just kind of looked like the rest of them. However, he's notrious for being fun with my family. My niece shouted, "Unclle Scott' shere, now we can have fun!" when he arrived. Although, he tried and enjoyed being in a happier pplace ofr a bit, you could tell there was no sparkle in him. Made me so sad. Then we had to drive off inseparate directions when we left. LAst night was hard. I knew it should only be one more night, but I haven't really slept sincehe left.

Well, today was even better news! SApring details, they're basically going to start the healing process today. The ventilator should be gone by Wednesday, his temp's been going down and is about normal now, his kidney production has gone way up the last 2 days and they are taking off the sedation meds a bit to let him be more conscious. (not awake, but so you can yell or speak firmly adn get him to squeeze your hane or wiggle his toes.) Next week, they will start skin grafts.

Oh, I found out Friday that he had moved up to a 50/50 chance of surviving. What??? They said eh could die from surgery adn WebMD mentioned it, but teh doc's only talked about keeping his leg. WHat good would his leg do if he was dead? Probably better that they didn't mention it, but still seems kind of wrong to bring it up that it's only 50/50 when you think he's through the worst. Then my BIL found out that they only gave him a 10% chance on Monday. Wow. As lof last night, the doc was "optimistic." I know that if he made it through what he did, though, he's not giving up now.

So, dh will some home tonight. I can't wait. There'll likely be a lot more weeknd trips to come, but at least things are looking up. Thansk for all of your thougths and prayers. Please keep them up, as it will be a long haul for everyone. I had to tell dh as he was lamenting what's still to come that it's just like our marathon. You take it one step at a time and don't look too far ahead. ;) I'm starting to think that last year was just training us for somethign bigger. It's amazing how that experience can change your outlook on so many other things. This morining, dh said, "Well, I feel like we've gone from uphill in the ice adn wind to crunchy snow and a more level surface." :p

Thansk again everone! I'll try to be OT agin now and hopefully will get back on track again with the workouts this week.

Have a great week everyone!

Carrie--    for you and Scott and your FIL and your whole family. That has got to be so hard on all of you. I didn't realize that Scott was staying with his family and that he wasn't home, that has to make it so much harder. I'll continue to keep you all in my prayers.

Cam--  for you and your family. That must have been hard for you. I agree that we need an accountability thread again, my eating has been out of control. My problem is I'm walking 20+ miles a week, so I'm burning calories, however I am eating like I'm RUNNING 20+ miles. I usually burn right around 100 calories per mile when I run and when I walk, I burn about 85 calories--that 15 calorie per mile difference is killing me!!

I was going to post this on the community board, but I didn't think many people would appreciate it or really care, but who else is :furious: that Jo Dee Messina is running the Boston Marathon without qualifying? I was just reading on Runners World that she is running Boston, her 1st marathon. WHAT??? How not right is that?? Qualifying for Boston is huge and an honor, yet she gets to run it without qualifying because she is a celebrity?? :sad2: :furious: :furious:

Krista - You're right. That stinks that a celeb can just jump right in when many of us know we'llnever get there and have worked our bus off. It might be justice, though, if she gets swept or comes in last. WHy would you want to even risk doing that to yourself?

cam - :grouphug: That is so rough. Hoope thigns get better for you soon. Good for you trying to get dd on the right track before college too. COllege can be a huge eating downfall.

OK, 2 down. How many more do I have to catch up with? ;)

Hello everyone! I am back! Our cruise was ab-so-lutely FAB-U-LOUS! OMG it was so great! I'll tell you all about it later, but for now I have to at least pretend to look at my work emails. Oh I so don't want to be here!

The women's race has started at the Boston Marathon. Go KIM!!!

Not much to report for me. I haven't run a step since last Tuesday. Wednesday I did the elliptical, and then I took rest days over Easter weekend while we were in Pittsburgh. I had a nice chat about running with my BIL from Michigan who was also in Pittsburgh. He said he has been starting to run too, and wanted to know if I wanted to run the CRIM 10 miler with him in August. I jumped to say yes. It will be fun to have someone to run with. It's a nice day here, and I'm going to try to go for a run outside today. I have my orthopedist appointment tomorrow, and am curious what he has to say about my shins.

Just popping my head in to say I'm in exactly the same "boat" (pun totally intended) as Judy since we didn't get back from our cruise until midnight and I'm in the office today :confused3

:grouphug: To both Cam and Carrie.

Sunny - I would really enjoy the EAT thread again. I found it most helpful.

I will try to catch up on the rest as soon as I am able. I did go for a morning run most days on the ship. Eating I was not so disciplined with :rotfl2:

Happy training to all :goodvibes

Carrie – :wizard: to your family.

Cam - :grouphug:

Judy & msblrobs– Welcome back!!!!

Skywalker – :wizard: on your ortho appointment. Please post what you find out.

I am another that needs to get her eating back on track. I leave for WDW in only 26 days and none of my spring/summer clothes have even the slightest chance of fitting from last year. I have buckled down starting today on my eating and will be either walking outside or on the dreadmill this evening. My back cannot take the pouding from the wogging so I will be walking until I can get it strengthend.

BTW - Cam can you explain or have a website that shows the types of stretches you are doing??? I wonder if those might help my back/hip also?

Happy training everyone!

Hey everyone!!!!

Just checking in. I really do have to read these boards more....wow....what a great group of supportive people. So much going on how do you all keep up. I am trying...my goal is to know all of you by January. :grouphug:

I am taking in all the information and advise that I get from all of you and it is helping.

Good luck KIM on your marathon today.....that is amazing :worship: I hear just to qualify is amazing in itself.....let us know how you did. :cheer2:

Okay--I'm a big ol' dork. I had Charleston on teh brain when I read that--that would be the Cooper River BRIDGE run. Yes--Dork is tattooed on my forehad.

Sounds great.

I do think the marathon they had was a couple of months ago. It was to be their first MAJOR event since Katrina. It is an annual event I think. Just remember that they were really trying to get runners--even if they just "registered" and got their shirt in the mail. (i.e.--donate an entry fee to keep the event afloat).

Hi, Minnie -- Not sure how valid this is, but it certainly works for me.

1. I sit on the floor and stretch each leg in front of me, reach for the toes and try to put my head to my knee on one side at a time.

2. Another one is to put the soles of my feet together in front of me and stretch until my knees can get closer to the floor.

3. The third is simply toe touches standing up. Another is putting my right foot to the outside of my left foot (cross right leg over left leg) and try to bend over to touch toes with my feet side by side. Then cross left in front of right with left foot on outside of right foot and bend over that way.

4. Another is to lay on my back and put my butt against the wall and reach for my toes with legs extended up the wall.

5. Another is to put my leg on the bed or the entertainment center so that leg is parallel to floor at the level of my hip and to reach for my toes.

One thing is for certain -- you have to do the stretches gently but for a while until you actually feel the stretch and feel the muscle loosening up. And I have really tried to get into the habit of stretching after working out as well.

Good luck!

Wow Cam thank you so much for taking the time to post so clearly for me. One of my major failings is that I do not take the time to strech properly.

Do you strech before and after each session or just one or the other?'

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well now I see what everyone has been saying about missing a day and a half and there is just way too many posts to reply to. So, I am sending good wishes and PD to all battling injuries and Carrie extra PD to you and your family.

GO KIM and anyone else running Boston -- maybe next year I will be doing the same.

I haven't posted training since Friday but I did get in more than 10 miles on Saturday in 1:20:42 - I do not know the exact distance becuase one of my training buddies was wearing a heart rate monitor and every time he got close to me the Garmin did not work. Has anyone else had this problem? This morning I ran 8.1 miles of the very same course and the areas where I thought the Garmin dropped were actually measured confirming my suspicions. Speaking of this morning, I am trying to see how I will do with long runs within 2 days of each other. I was very pleased today because going out it took me 34:30 and coming back I dropped my time to 31:45 and this is a very hilly course.

Hi WISH buddies!!!!!! I have just found out that DH is going to be attending his company's conference in June. And it is being held at...........you guessed it the best conference place in the WORLD :teeth: Coronodo Springs Resort :cool1:  :cheer2: I have also found out that he will not be required to share a room so family can stay for free :thumbsup2 Now this is only a month after I get back from the Minnie and I dont think we really should go because of $$$ but how can I pass up this opportunity. All the wheels in my head are starting to turn. More WDW planning :cloud9:

Pros:
1. he can get a gas allowance instead of plane ticket, so free to get us down there
2. free accomodations (except if we add on any days, which we can then get corporate rate for) at a really cool hotel I know the boys would love!!
3.discounted convention tickets. They even have some for after 2:00 or after 4:00 if Rick is going to be in meetings all day (although taking the boys to the parks by myself does not sound fun)
4. I know there will be other Intergraph families there & I think we would have fun hanging out at the hotel while DH did his thing.

cons:
1.although alot is taken care of I will still spend more money than if I stayed home & I will have already been twice this year by then (although when I come for the Minnie, I wont be going to the parks so that almost doesnt count :rolleyes1 )

2.DH doesnt get a per diem on this trip since the conference provides all meals.
3. I am one of the directors for VBS this year & it is 2 weeks after we get back.(huge church, 800+ kids attend) But, everything should be mostly done by then.

As for training, DS8 was out of school today but DS5 wasnt so we went to the track & did 3 miles. I think it about killed DS to keep up with me (he usually trains with DH & I'm much tougher on him) but he did it & did pretty good. He has 19 miles done for his marathon.

I have to go to a meeting at 5:00 for VBS to finalize some decisions & I dont know how I am going to focus with all this going on in my head :hyper:

Hellloooooo, everyone!!!
We completed the Crescent City Classic and were NOT last!!! Claire, you were in the group ahead of me. You are so right...with 14,000 people there was no way to find each other. What a great time you did!! :cheer2:

This was my first really big event. Lots of new things to experience. In the race info, it said that the different color groups would be called to the start. As the line up was 6 blocks long (no corrals) and we wanted to see the start, we waited at the start to hear our group called. Once the starting "gun" (They shot a cannon!!) went off and the seeded runners were on their way, all bets were off! All different color bibs were mixed together. I understand that this was probably frustrating for faster people!! When we saw mostly our color bibs and some people pulling kids in wagons, we joined the line for the start. I had rented a chip because this was going to be my test for Minnie. I had my Garmin, but I wanted to see what a chip would say. It was cool to step on the start mat and hear the "buzz"!!! DH decided to jog, so off he went.

I set my Garmin to give me a pace alert if I went below a 15 minute pace..big mistake! Fortunately, I didn't let it bother me (too much) because of what I've read from all of you here. I knew to ignore what people were doing around me (MfM) and stick with my plan. I also knew my rhythm, so I was a little surprised when the alert kept going off. Finally, when I had completed one mile..it said I had done it in 12:41!!! There is just no way. :sad2: So, Goofyguy and MelR, I'll let you know when the official chip time comes out how close the Garmin was! I probably got looks from people around me when I started yelling at the Garmin.."A 13 minute mile??!! Are you nuts??!! Why are you telling me to SPEED UP???!!!" :rotfl2:

Now, you runners may laugh at this next bit, but I've told all of you that I am a WALKER (and NOT a race walker!). Well, when Cam and others were talking about "wogging," I thought I would try to add that beginning last month. My intervals are 2 minutes walking, 15 seconds wogging!!! Minnie's 15 minute pace really has me worried..especially now that I've read that there WILL be sweepers!!! :scared1: So, I upped it to 2 minutes walking 20 seconds wogging. I am proud to say, I was able to maintain that all the way!

As Sunny pointed out in January..it adds mileage to weave between people in front of you! I was constantly scanning for a break in the crowd for when it came time to wog. I was trying to keep Miss Manners happy and wog on the left, walk on the right. I was with groups of people who were strolling along (there was no set finish time), so I got plenty of practice weaving! :). According to Garmin, I did 6.6 of the 6.2 course!
There was a trio dressed in hula skirts, a group from a walking club dressed in black top hats, black tails and white running shorts carrying their canes decked in paper roses, and quite a few people with bunny ears (one who was handing candy out to the firemen and policemen). As Claire said, once we got into the neighborhoods there were people with hoses spraying water, one guy was handing out Mardi Gras beads, beer was offered, and people had gathered on their porches to cheer us on!

http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/data/500/80578Walking_club_3.jpg

The worst part was to cross into City Park and see where the finish line was..then to see the long twisted way we still had to go to get to it!! I imagined that that was how it would be to enter EPCOT and see the sphere!!

I crossed the mat at 1:44, my official chip time is 1:34:08 which means a 15:10 pace. :guilty: Don't get me wrong, I am ecstatic that I did that!! It's just that we have this ::MinnieMo in three weeks. All I can do is my best, right? Garmin has my average pace at 14:31 for the run.

Here's the sight that greeted us when we got into the stadium:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/data/500/80578The_Stadium_left_2.jpghttp://www.wdwinfo.com/photopost/data/500/80578The_Stadium_right_2.jpg
and there were still lots more behind us!

It really was a great experience and certainly helped me to get ready for Minnie and DL!! Gotta go run now!!!

Great race report Maherae! You are right--weaving does add distance. I despise it--but it is a necessary evil wtih the big events. I would love to just go in a straight line.

So today--I tried WALKING! This is how I plan to train for DL since I am also planning to have a passenger with me. I am still amazed at what my "little" meniscus tear had prohibited me from doing. Pre-surgery--with a marathon and half way through training for a marathon..my running pace was fine but my walking pace stunk--like really stunk. I could maintain a 17-18--but more often closer to 19. I do run walk intervals and I would have to try super hard to get it closer to the 17 and even lower. Like--I felt like I was "walk-sprinting" trying to win a trophy or something.

But alas--they took it out and time came off immediately. My walk breaks for Diseny were around 16mpm--consistently.

Trying the first few weeks of the walking program from MFM--and today was 30 minutes of walking. I ALMOST got 2 miles in--my pace was 15:40 (I think--I'm working so cannot go fetch the Garmin). That is with pushing a my almost 6-yo and 3yo in a jogging stroller.

Soo----do you think I can walk 13.1 miles and beat the sweeper?

Mel - Wow - lots of medical stuff going on. Hope everyone feels better soon!

Lisa - Good advice on taking it easy. More on that below!

Cam - Tough times. Anniversaries aren't fun; neither are holidays. We're dreading Mother's Day, and I can't get used to not being able to tell either Mom or Dad about what's going on in our lives.

Carrie - More PD for you and your family. I know it's getting really wearing - hope life can return to normal soon!

TiffJ - Go with the Pros!

Kim - Hope Boston went great!

I have an appointment tomorrow at a sports med clinic. I want a professional to tell me whether I can run the Minnie, walk the Minnie, or just watch DH run the Minnie. DD and I went to the beach Sat for the day, and just walking from the car to the beach hurt, so I'm about ready to give up on any chance of doing much, but if I can just walk it, I can still get the medal...

Hope everyone has a great week!

I second that the start was completely and absolutely nuts! And the cannon scared the pirate: outta me--I was standing nearly in front of it! I didn't even know that the cannon worked.

Yeah somehow I ended with 6.08 miles....go figure. I think mine lost signal when we were going down Poydras with all the big skyscrapers. But when I check it on Motion Based it says 6.98 miles....I think I'll go with that!

There was a trio dressed in hula skirts, a group from a walking club dressed in black top hats, black tails and white running shorts carrying their canes decked in paper roses, and quite a few people with bunny ears (one who was handing candy out to the firemen and policemen). ooh dont forget the hotdogs and donuts hehe. and i was running next to a devil and a fleur des lis. and the marine corp squad ran past singing loud and strong.

The worst part was to cross into City Park and see where the finish line was..then to see the long twisted way we still had to go to get to it!! I imagined that that was how it would be to enter EPCOT and see the sphere!!

Just a quick post to update what I have been up to. Friday I wogged 2.25 miles on the treadmill testing out my new shoes. They told me to try them on the treadmill so that I could return them if they didn't work. Saturday I did 2.5 miles outside... what a wog. I was going to do 3 miles of this new path I marked out. Well on my way down the busy road, a crazy old lady hit a dog (killed it) and I was the witness, along with the people that lived right there. I ran back to help a teenaged girl that was trying to get the dog out of the road. The old lady took off. The owners were no where to be found, and when the neighbors found him, he could care less. This is a busy 4 lane road with constant fast moving traffic and the guy said he was busy and can't watch the dog. TIE HIM UP!!!! So have no clue on my time, I wogged back home all upset.

Today when I got home I did the same path to see what I could do it in...34 minutes for 2.5 miles. I was OK with that, my breathing was better but my shins started hurting.

So I am now dreading my 5K in a couple of weeks. I have never done hills. The start is near a hill and I am so scared we will have to run it. I may have to walk the hill. I already know I plan to wog, I don't think I can jog the whole thing. My goal is to make it in under 40 minutes. But I worry that everyone will be seasoned runners and then 15 minutes later I will finish. I know, think positive... finishing is better than not even starting!!!

I had my first good wog - yes, I actually WOGGED - in a long time tonight! I have been sticking to walking since I started my knee injections back in Feb, but decided it was about time to pick up my pace. I started thinking that if I can swim 1000 or even 1500 meters at a pretty good pace that there was no reason for me to think I do not have the endurance to do some wogging instead of just walking, so that's what I did! It felt really good, too! I will still have trouble with the pace on the Minnie 5K, but not as bad as I thought I would.

Lynne I forget you are not all here in FL to go for open water swims! :fish: As for your 50 mile bike before the Minnie, there are a lot of really good bike trails here in Central FL, several of which are fairly close to WDW and long enough to get your ride in. One of them, the West Orange Trail, even has a bike shop that rents bikes if you will not have yours with you. I'm sure their rentals are in no way what you are used to riding, but it would be one way to get a ride in.

Cam Prayers and PD for you and your family. :wizard:

Carrie I am glad your FIL is doing better. Prayers and PD to you and your family, too! :wizard:

Judy Welcome back Thanks for the trip report! The shore excursions sounded like fun, but the track on the ship did not.

Sara Welcome back to you, too! Glad you had a good time on your cruise.

Dave You have a running buddy for the CRIM! Should be fun!

Tiff I think the PROS outweigh the cons! :yay:

Maherae Great job on your race! You really have come a long way!

Jackie Hope you get good news at the sports med appt!

Jen What a terrible situation to have to deal with on your run! Some people should never be allowed to own a dog! Hope someone got the driver's plate number. From the sounds of your workouts, you will do fine on your 5K. Go read the race reports about the huge variety of people who were running in races this weekend and you'll see that you will do fine. Being last is not a bad thing either. I know from experience. I was last in my first 5K and you would not believe how much people were cheering me on. I don't think you will be last though. Not even close! :moped:

Good Morning Everyone,

Just a quick post here.......I still have to catch up on everyone's posts. Yesterday, I did go out running, although I think that I could have done better but not only was I exhausted but my allergies were also acting up. I did my 3.11 mile run, at a 10.48 pace (at least that is what my Garmin told me) I hope it's somewhat right :teeth: . I really wish that I could have done better but my allergies were really kicking in.

Today is my rest day, so hopefully if I don't catch up on posts at some point today I will do it tonight.

Have a great day everyone,

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Spring Break week here in Rochester and DD8 princess: is out of school for the week. I signed her up for a "camp" at my fitness center at work. She had a great time, and they took them swimming at the University pool all afternoon. I did not end up running, but did 30 min on the elliptical yesterday. I have my ortho appointment at 3pm today, and I'm very curious to hear what he has to say.

I know ALOT of people that run Boston without qualifying. And they are not celebrities. They are charity runners and have to raise at least $2500 to run. In fact, DH was lucky enough to get a waiver from someone on the board in 2002 - but was injured after Disney that year and could not use it. Talk about bummed out!

I have been MIA lately. But I did my 4 miler on Saturday and 45 mins cross on Sunday. Today I am doing a 5 miler.

Carrie - more :grouphug: for your FIL!

Good morning everyone!! Hope everyone is having a great week. Hines and I did our 4 miles last night. You guys should see him walk, he is too funny, he prances alongside of me and I swear that dog smiles the whole time. I have scratches on my knuckles from where my hand grazed his open mouth while it was on his leash. I am amazed that Hines keeps right up with me, we're walking a 13:--something miles and he just trots along. He gets a break tonight because I'm going to the Community Center, but tomorrow night we're doing 5.

Kristi--I had no idea the Boston marathon was like that, I thought everyone had to qualify to run it. I'm not sure how I feel about people running without qualifying, running for a charity is a great thing and letting the soldiers who participated in the Iraq Boston marathon run it when they get home is pretty cool, but by letting "normal" runners run the Boston, doesn't it bring the prestige down a little bit? I don't want to start a debate, just thinking out loud. But how disappointed your husband must have been!! By the way, are Stephen and I the only dorks who Tivo'd the Boston marathon on the OLN network and watched it last night??

Jodi--I feel SO blah too!! And I have to wear a bathing suit in 24 days!! :scared: How is your training going?

Jen--I don't know how you managed to walk home, seeing a dog get hit, I would have been so upset. Seeing bad dog owners make me :furious:.

Dave--How cool that your work has kiddie boot camp, it sounds like lots of fun. :wizard: on your appointment today, hopefully the doctor can find something so you can figure out what the problem is.

Judy--Glad to have you back, sounds like you had a great time. So you get to go on a cruise AND go to Italy?? No fun!!

Nancy--Yay that you can wog again!! There's no stopping you now. :teeth:

Lisa--Don't worry about walking the DL half, I'm sure you're pace will be fine. I had to go from running to walking because of an IT band injury and I was worried about my pace for the Flying Pig 1/2 and so far it's fine. I do my tempo walks keeping it in the 12:00's and upper 13:00's and for my long walks, I keep it in the 14:00's; I just have to keep reminding myself that I'm walking with a purpose and not just out for an evening stroll. Just keep getting your steps in and the pace will start creeping up and I know you'll be fine by September. Good luck!!

Are our vacationers back yet? Amy? Christa??

I better get started on my work, I have a feeling that today is going to be busy. One of my co-workers has called in sick (again :furious: ) and when she's not here I'm the one stuck with doing her work. I do not envy her when she gets back, our boss was not too happy when he heard she wasn't coming in.

Talk to everyone later!!

One more thing, I just got my daily Squeal from the Flying Pig marathon and on every email there is an inspirational quote. I really liked it and figured you guys would too.

No, if anyone was dorky, it was my hubby! He was watching the marathon live and checking the progress online of 2 reporters from my station that were running. Now, that's dorky! :)

Chad will never run fast enough to qualify for Boston. So we either have to raise / save up tons of money for a donation, or he has to find a waiver from someone. His old contact is no longer on the board, but he is going to ask next time he sees him, if he still has any way of getting that waiver. I know it may not seem fair, but if Chad doesn't get that waiver, someone else will!

P.S. I really like that quote!

Maherae Great job on your race! You really have come a long way!

Thanks, Nancy!! I think I would have probably given up back in February if it hadn't been for this board. Now, even if I do get swept at Minnie, I know I will make the DL 1/2 and on to WDW 1/2!

aladdinsgirl That's a great quote! Thanks for sharing!! The daily Squeal.. :rotfl2: how clever! We would have been right there with you Tivo'ing the Boston..but we don't get OLN!! Had to be happy with online results.
Mel What a great Easter basket!! Not fattening!!
Judy Sounds like you had a wonderful, restful trip! Glad you are back, though!!
Jen Go and read ScoJo's race report. You'll see how fun 5K's are and that all sizes, shapes, and ages will be there! You'll do great!!
Carrie So glad things are better with your FIL!
Jackie and Dave Waiting for your doctors' reports!!
Claire didn't see any hot dogs or donuts!! Saw the fleur de lis guy at the stadium..he still hadn't taken his outfit off!! Saw the Marines..thought it was great that a woman was leading cadence!

Boston - There was an article in the last Runner's World about someone that was given an exemption into the race and had mixed feelings about it. I don't remember if it was the editor or Bingham or who exactly now. I'll have to check when I get home.

Judy - The fact that you found time to walk on your cruise inspired me to get off my tush last night and on to the dreadmill. I walked for 45min and though my legs, hip, and back felt tight I'm only slightly ouchy today. I will be back at it tonight!

I also started my diet back up yesterday. Nothing like 25 days to WDW and shorts/swimwear to get a person motivated :lmao:

Mel - Congrats on your Easter basket... mine was no where near as healthy as yours!!

Cam - I am so sorry for the loss of your parents. I understand how hard it can be to get through times like that. I always seem to eat ALOT when those times come around. Hopefully things will calm down and get back to normal again. In the meantime

p.s. I would be more than greatful for a Training Eating Accountability Thread!!

Carrie - for your family, and pixiedust: to continued improvements for your FIL.

Minnie - I have bursitis in both hips, and one of the stretches I have found that is amazing at relieving my hip pain is this. Lay on your back with your knees bent like you are gonna do a sit up. Rest your right ankle on your left knee, grab the back of your left leg and pull it towards your chest until you feel the stretch. Then switch sides. Might be worth a try for anyone having hip pain. HTH

Jen - That is so horrible. I would have just been heartbroken, I wouldn't have been able to finish my run either. The saddest part is that nothing can be done to the woman who hit the dog and left.

Well, I am finally starting to run agan. Yesterday I wogged 2 miles. I knew that being sick for so long was gonna take a toll on me, but I could never have imagined how much. Yesterday I ran for 3 min walk for 90 sec, ran for 5 min walk for 2min30sec. To say the least it was difficult to even get through the 3 min let alone the 5, but we'll get there. I had a thought while I was running yesterday though and wanted to get your opinions on it. Here's the deal. My Mom is just starting running and I wanna be able to be there to support her in her training, so I was thinking that I would run (well WOG at first) with her 3 days a week, and then do a long run on the weekends. Gradually she will be running further distances and longer times, and I will just gradully increase those with her, but mostly concentrate on my long runs on Saturday. Does that sound doable? The reason I ask is because I see so many training plans where people are running 4-5-6 miles during the week and then their long runs on Sat or Sun, but I thought that maybe training with shorter runs during the week would be acceptable also. I was thinking something similar to this training plan (http://www.runinjuryfree.com/training/marathon.html) Anyone have an opinion?? :confused3

Ohhh... I almost forgot to tell you!! I went and bought new running shoes yesterday. When I went to the running store the woman saw the running shoes I had and said they still had those in stock, and grabbed a pair for me. I was amazed at how WHITE the new shoes are!!! The new shoes feel so much better than my old shoes did, so obviously I was in desperate need of new shoes!! And the best part, my Mom met me up there so she could get her first pair of "running"shoes, and since she was there buying hers she went ahead and paid for mine as my Birthday present!! YAY!!!

Good morning all!!

I don't have time for personals, but :grouphug: to Carrie... hope things continue to improve.

OK, WISH friends, I have a dilemma I would like some input on. As most of you know, I work a full-time job and am a full-time student as well. I have made the decision that I need to get this whole degree thing finished ASAP (not getting any younger). Therefore, I will be taking 19 academic credits this fall. :faint:

This leaves me with a Goofy-sized dilemma-- with this load, is marathon training going to send me over the edge? I've worked it out on paper... and it does seem doable (running 4 days/week plus a crosstraining day). Everyone I ask is giving me different advice... be it about my academic insanity or possibly training augmentations. I'm really on the fence about what to do. Since I know we are all a super-busy group... any advice??

OK, back to work for me.
Thanks all!

Hi everyone! :wave2:

Just letting you know that I won't be around for a little while longer. We are camping!!! Whoo hoo!!! It's at Hanna Park where you can camp under beautiful trees, ride your bike to the beach, and then go fishing in a lake. It is a great place! We decided to extend our stay for 3 more days so we drove home to wash some clothes, but will be leaving again shortly. I hope everyone is doing well.

Dana- Great news from the doctor! I'm so glad you're okay. I hope you're still sticking with the no cigarettes thing. You can do it. I'm a little passionate about the issue since my husband's female coworker just died from it leaving small children without a mom or a dad. It is a horrible situation. :sad1: I know it's hard, but I believe in you and your love for your family.

Talk to everyone else when I return!

Take care!

Kevin - Yikes! I think your degree needs to be number 1 priority right now. ANd, job, probably a very close second, as w/o job, no $ for school (or assistance towards classes).

That being said, You will still want to train, as it would be awful to lose that base. I woudl concentrate on the full nod not do b2b LRs, though. If I were you, I'd do like 4/1 w/r intervaos or something along those lines for the half, just to get the mdedal. Then, I'd try to run both after I had my degree. JMO. Huge respect for you for finishing when you have a full-time job and wre away from school for a while!

I did see that after I posted and it brought a sigh of relief. I guess I get concerned because the YMCA is putting on the 5K and everytime I go to work out, the runners are also so serious and running as fast as they can. I never ever see normal people like me. I guess as long as a finish, I am ahead of all those that are just standing around waiting and never ran!!!

Actually, I have stuck to it!! So far so good. As of yesterday afternoon I have been without cigarettes for an entire week!! I thought though that after a week I wouldn't think about them all the time!! :rotfl: Still think about them alot, like when we get done with dinner I think "I should be having a cigarette now!", or even when I got done with my run yesterday and got in my car!! I am very happy to be done with them though. Although I may still think about them I am not in the least bit tempted to actually have one. I refuse to intentionally do something to my body that could make me leave my children without a mother or my Husband without a Wife!! Thanks everyone for the encouragement!!

Hey Kevin: I think you can do it too. I also agree with wtpclc and think that going Goofy might be a bit too much. As I'm sure you know, you have to prioritize your time and your degree and work would probably come first. But you also need time for you, and running could be just the thing you need for stress relief, etc. to help you manage the load of 19 credits in the fall plus working full time. I would certainly try it. You've already signed up haven't you? So you might as well keep training, and then if you find it's too much for you you could decide to do only the full or 1/2.

Minnie

Kevin - Wow 19 credits in a term - Yikes. The most I ever did during my undergrad while working full-time was 15. I was a single mother at the time but was not training for an endurance event.

It is possible and if you seem to be really dedicated so I do think it is even probable that you can do this. I hope that your work allows some sort of leeway or perhaps take a vacation day or two around finals and midterms with that type of load.

The running will probably be the least of your worries and likely and important stress reliever. I agree with the others I wouldn't give it up but you might consider either the 1/2 or full instead of both this year.

I feel for you. My grad school finals are next week and I feel like this  right now with my work and school schedule.

Good luck!

Minnie -- Be sure to stretch before you get on the dreadmill, too. :thumbsup2

Oh, and BTW, being a single parent is an endurance event in and of itself, isnt' it? ;)

Kevin -- I agree that having a training schedule might force you to take some time away from your studies to decompress. I think, in your shoes, I'd be satisfied to complete the 1/2 ahead of the sweepers and really just train for the full. Training to get PRs on both would be way too much. I can't even imagine just working full time and taking a regular course load, much less 19 credits! Any chance of taking a class over the summer to lighten up the fall load a bit?

Hi, everyone! Miss you all. Heading to a WW meeting tonight to jump start my weight loss again so I don't have to lug these extra pounds around the Minnie course or the DL 1/2. Hope to see improvement in my training with the rescusitation of my discipline!

Jen - Sorry you had to witness the dog being hit. I would have been a total wreck and unable to do anything from that point on. I don't understand people who let their dogs roam, and I especially don't understand people who have dogs and don't care what happens to them!

Nancy - Great job on your wog!

Dave - How was your ortho appt?

Kevin - I agree with everyone else. The degree comes first, but running will be your escape. Just lessen the hours you dedicate to training and let it be for fun and see how you feel in January.

Dana - Congratulations on no cigarettes!

Went to the sports med clinic at Duke today. Good news, I guess, although he can't tell me exactly what's wrong, other than I overdid it and strained something. His best guess is some version of shin splints, although he did xray to rule out a stress fracture. Basically he told me to do what my body says - if it hurts, don't do it. If I feel okay doing the Minnie, go for it, and I can't do any further damage. So I'm going to try to walk tonight - less than a mile or so just to see how it goes.

And from now on I'll pay more attention to the rule about not adding more than 10% mileage at any given time... the 4 mile wog sounded great, but since 3 miles was my previous longest distance, guess it wasn't such a great idea!

Jen-- I can't *believe* what some people will do to animals! I can't believe that old lady just drove off-- when I was in high school, some guys I was driving with thought it would be funny to tell me I ran over a bird-- it was horrifying (I really didn't run over a bird)-- I don't know what I would do if I hit a dog!!

Kevin-- I agree with everyone else-- 19 credits is *a lot*-- I assume you are on semesters?? (I understand quarters, there are more credits, right?) When I was in college, I wanted to finish quicker at the end, too, so I took 17 credits my last semester-- they were ALL engineering class credits (which are hard), but it was awful-- there is no way I could have trained for the Goofy at the same time! Focus on school and get that done-- I would pick either the full or half, and just train for that (that will probably even help to keep stress down!)

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to report that I made it to the gym tonight after my WW meeting. Did 2 miles on TM in 28:14 and then 30 minutes on the bike. Not too bad considering all I wanted to do after the meeting was get home and climb into bed with a good book after a good dinner. Compromise was a snack, then the gym, then home to a waiting dinner (thank you, Howard!   )

Kevin - I trained for goofy w/ the 3 day/week, 16 week running program and I just moved the mid week tempo run to the day b/4 the LR and made it 1/2 the distance of the LR. I only did 3 back to backs like that (one b/4 the 17, one b/4 the 18 and 1 b/4 the 20). Anyway, goofy was fine. I ran both of the races at or below my training pace and the recovery was no problem. I think you can do it if you find the right program. Best wishes w/ your decision.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Thanks for all the good wishes for my shins and all. I really appreciate it. I had my orthopaedist appointment yesterday. It was a good appointment - better than last year when they said "you have shin spints, stop running." After checking out my feet alot he said that I have a slight curve in my ankle/foot. Instead of landing flat on my soles of my feet - I land on the side which is adding stress to my shins. He thought if I get some orthotics that it would help my feet land in the proper way and eliminate the extra stress. So I have another appointment with the sports rehabilitation services today to get fitted for my orthotic, talk about proper shoes, and come up with a plan to get me back to running pain free. Thanks again for all the support.

Woo hoo! Iactually had a work out yesterday. Fairly pathetic, but better than nothing, DH was not feeling well, so he walked with me. After he got tired, I ran for about 20 minutes and walked again. Last week took a lot out of me, but I think lack of hydratoin (way too much cofee lately) and not having my afternoon snack helped.

DH got me the sport beans for Easter. I don't think I can chomp on anything while running, but they worked ok for a pre-run snack. For the runs, though, I've got toadmit that Gu is easier for me to swallow.

BTW, it was HOT yesterday! WHy can't I get a little more happy medium time? The sun sure did feel good though!

Tomorrow - is my WW meeting where I get my lifetime award, I'm a little bit nervous about the whole thing though after last week. Just a little afraid that I will get picked on again.......at least after tomorrow, I don't have to weigh in there on a weekly basis.

Sunday - Is the MS walk.....sadly I wasn't able to raise any money for it but DH and I will contribute. When I sent out e-mails etc to friends and family they all chose to go with the Breast Cancer research fundraiser. What can ya do? :confused3

Well, I have to run.....Everyone have a fabulous day!

I must admit I feel my motivation dropping lately. That's why I haven't been posting so much lately. I actually even feel a little bad complaining because there are so many other people here that have so much more going on. I've been so frustrated with my legs lately. I think I was in denial for a long time, but they really hurt pretty much constantly. I haven't run at all for a week (I've done the elliptical twice), and yesterday was the first day I didn't take any Allieve. I still feel the ache a little, but it wasn't so much I needed to take some anti-inflammatories. After reading Marathoning for Mortals I really got to thinking that it wasn't normal to be getting through my runs by taking so much anti-inflammatories, and I was definitely taking them before going out to a run too. Right now I don't see how I can do a marathon next January when I can't even run three miles without feeling like someone is hammering spikes up my shins. I've been feeling like the gains I made over the past 3 months are slipping away, and even the ability/motivation to get out there and run seems to be slipping away. I think about how it's going to hurt when I take those first steps to run, and that causes me to not want to get out there. Thanks for listening to me complain. I'm hoping my appointment with the physical therapist helps today.

I did my usual 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. It was hard to do right after coming back from vacation but today it was a little easier. I suspect those....ummm..."couple" of extra pounds I brought back might have had something to do with it. But also, the trip home on Saturday...sitting in the airport for three hours then two and a half hours on the plane then another hour and a half drive home....I was stiff and sore from all that. But that's over now. So, back on track I go, so to speak. :p

Good morning all! I didn't exercise last night, I did some much needed housework instead. Hines and I are doing 5 miles tonight (I may be swinging by the house to drop him off :teeth: ), I still have a ton of things to do at home, but I guess it can all wait another day or 12. :lmao:

Dave-- feel free to complain all you want, that's what we're here for! Maybe you should not think about the marathon for a little while, just walk and do the ellipitical, get back to enjoying exercising again. The marathon won't fill up until late summer, you have plenty of time to decide what you want to do.

Jodi--Good luck tomorrow night! Hope you don't get in trouble! :teeth: I think you can wait until July before you start training seriously for the Goofy. Good luck this weekend too!

Minnie--Guess what, Delta settled their contract!!

Kevin--19 credit hours?? Working full time?? Training for a marathon??? :faint: :faint: Wow!! I'll echo everyone and say maybe you should do the half or the full instead of the Goofy, I bet you'll need a break from studying and working. If all else fails, you can always sign up and then not go, yes it would be a waste of $100, but you can't let your school or work suffer because of training. And if it comes down to the wire and something has to go, then it would of course be the marathon. Good luck!!

Hi, everyone! Nothing to report since last night, but I wanted to pop in for a minute after reading Dave's post.

Dave -- I think it is fair to say that most of us have gone through difficult periods of time where we suffered painful physical ailments, and fortunately, I think everyone was able to do something less stressful to their bodies during those times.

If you are able to do the elliptical without it hurting your shins, you should definitely take pleasure in that and remain disciplined about it. You will maintain your fitness level and will continue to improve your cardio fitness, too.

Just PLEASE do not disappear from this board. We all are so appreciative of what you bring to this group, whether we are cheering for your progress or sending :goodvibes: and :grouphug: Your progress has been wonderful. Even if you have to cut back a bit to a less physically challenging regimen, do it. Remember the pleasure you took from getting into a fitness routine. Go back and read some of your posts. I find that it is really hard to motivate myself to work out, but if I can just remind myself that the feeling of satisfaction is worth the struggle of the process, it is often enough.

Okay, off my soapbox! :teeth:

Welcome back, Judy! We missed you! I have to go read your trip report. Oh, and I have to write days 2 and 3 of mine.

Hi everyone....like Judy I'm trying to catch up here after just getting back from vacation. Arizona was BEAUTIFUL! It was our first time there and we were really amazed with what a wonderful place it is to vacation...we started in Sedona (simply gorgeous) and moved down to Scottsdale for a few days of rest. We did tons of sightseeing, hiking and eating! But I am happy to report that I did two trail runs of 3 miles each. Now I have a new found respect for all the adventure racers here. You guys....it is HARD work to do trail running. Especially in the higher altitudes. But it was fun and really spiced up my workouts. I ran SLOW though...looking out for rattlers and rocks and all sorts of critters. Luckily I didn't see any...but it is wild country out there in the high dessert! In Scottsdale I walked with my DH one day and did a 4 mile run on the hotel dreadmilll. The only part that was fun was running with everyone else on their dreadmills. I normally run alone so I felt some comaraderie in there...as we all worked out before pigging out on Easer Sunday :teeth: .

I've tried to catch up on all the posts here....just wanted to say:

Dave: Hang in there. Please don't stop posting! And if the orthodics don't work (and I really believe they will help)....you could consider race walking? Would you consider doing that? I've always thought that if my body decides it can't handle the long runs I might be willing to switch to that? Just wondering if that is a consideration or not? But don't throw in the towel just yet! Pleaase keep us posted on your PT appointment and what you learn!

Krista: How about American Idol last night! I thought Chris was amazing!!!

Judy: How was the cruise? Hope you had a fabulous time!

Cam: Hope the play went wonderfully! I missed a whole week of posts so I know this is old news. But I was thinking about your son and his shows! The girls play was a big hit but I'm relieved it is over!

Dana: Congrats on quitting the smokes. :grouphug: And big hugs to you for all the stress and turmoil you went through the past few weeks. So glad to hear you are feeling better and all is well with the x-rays! What a scare!

Carrie: Good for you for getting out there last night. Sure hope DH feels better....all the stress with his Dad and now the poor guy is sick :(. Hope FIL is continuing to improve! He's been in my thoughts!

To everyone else I missed....I'm so sorry. Just couldn't get to all the reading. Still unpacking LOL! :rolleyes1 I did get to KBX today and ran 3 miles last night. Both workouts were tough as I'm feeling a bit of jet lag...but I have my first ever race on Saturday and I need to stay tuned up!!!

Amy--Glad you had a great vacation. AZ sounds wonderful, if Stephen and I could ever tear ourselves away from WDW, maybe we could discover the rest of the country. :teeth: AI was awesome last night, and Chris was wonderful.

I resemble that remark! ;) As a child, we used to go all over the ocuntry for vacations. Now, I have a hard time going anywhere else, as I know we'll love WDW. We are doing the ALaska Cruise fo our anniv. and someday I want to go to Hawaii, but beyond that? Even DL would be a stretch. ;)

I did 3.6 miles today 13:16 pace (although it about killed me) It was hot. Darn hot!! I am now officially worried about the heat for the Minnie :sunny:

Dave-take care of those shins. And dont worry about complaining here. That's what we are here for. It is hard to keep your motivation at peak levels all the time. Keep up your fitness with other things right now. And like the others said-dont leave us. It doesnt matter if you are in full training mode or not. Good luck with PT.

Amy-glad you had a good time. There are alot of places I would like to go, but we cant seem to tear ourselves away from the World either.

Judy-good for you for getting back on track. I know how hard it is to do that after vacation. Glad you had such a great time.

Minnie-1 day of school is not going to be a big deal. Family time is very precious. Have a great trip.

Krista - I am so excited for you!!!!! Only 24 days until WDW :cool1:

TiffJ Thank you for your comment. I struggled with this one since my son is in middle school (6th grade) but finally decided that one day wasn't enough to leave him home. I can't wait to see WDW through his eyes again :goodvibes

Dave take care and rest if need be there is plenty of time until Marathon weekend 2007.
Kevin, 19 credits and a full time job; running should be your outlet not another full time job. Like many others say, go for the full or the half not both and enjoy the rest of the weekend, you will need the break.

Carrie additional PD coming your way.

Good training all, I have to get going no time to post to everyone, sorry.

Training for the day, did 4.3 miles - the .3 was a warm up and the 4 was kind of a tempo run for Sunday's 5 mile Valley Forge race -in 33:10. I love the Garmin's ability to give me mile splits - first mile in 7:50, second mile in 7:36, third mile in 7:22, and fourth mile in 7:25. I am hoping for a 37 minute 5 miler on Sunday and think (after today's run) that I should be right on.

Morning Everyone,

Well - I did my 4 mile run last night......didn't do as well as I would have liked to I averaged an 11.08 min/mile (at least that's what Garmin said)....running the four miles in 44.34 minutes.

Yesterday, I was exhausted and my allergies were really bugging me during the run - so I did take walking breaks here and there.

It was kind of funny, I forgot that the running club that I joined ran last night also......I kept on bumping into them while running.....although they just started out and I was kind of towards the end of my run. Maybe next week I will join up with them - it's always hard to know what my workload is going to be and that has an effect on going running at all.

Tonight is my WW meeting and then afterwards I hope to go running, although this time on the threadmill. Saturday I'm supposed to do a 10 mile run, although the weather looks like it is going to be awful.....I might have to do it on the threadmill.

Sunday is the MS walk - it's also supposed to rain then.

Well, I'm going to take off now....have to finish getting ready for work. Have a great day everyone.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Thanks for the support everyone, and for listening to me vent about my shins. I was having a down day yesterday and needed to be "bucked up" a little. So I appreciate it.

I had my PT appointment yesterday. They did a good job, I was really happy with the attention I got. The person I met with is also a runner, a certified athletic trainer and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He did another full evaluation of my feet, legs, and hips, and had me run on the treadmill too. I ended up running over 1.5 miles on the treadmill - I wish I had changed my shirt because I was dripping after that. He said that he thought he could help my shin problem with some more stretching and strengthening exercises, and that if I was game he'd like to try that before going the orthotics route. I was down with that. So he gave me some exercises to do before I start running to "activate" my muscles before I run, and he gave me some more stretches to do. He also said to try to run on some flat surfaces right now and stay away from the hills - so no more Mt Hope Cemetery for me right now. He then wants me to come back in a week and he'll give me some more strengthening exercises. I was in there for nearly 2 hours. Again, I was really impressed with all the attention I was getting. It was much better than last fall when I was told "you have shin splints, stop running". So I have some work to do now.

Greetings Everyone: I wanted to touch base with everyone about the socks one more time. So where it was left is that I heard from SockGuy that there is a minimum order of 120 pairs of socks (which was news to me). Right now we are somewhere between 70-80 pairs of socks for the team. I crunched the numbers, and we could get the socks if we paid more for them. So instead of ~$5/pair of socks they would cost between $7-$8/pair. I know this is a lot different than what we had originally talked about so I want to see if people would be willing to pay that amount. If that's OK, I would go ahead and place our order. I'm not sure if we could get the socks in time for the Minnie, but I think we could. Let me know what you think.

Good morning everyone!! :sunny: Hope that everyone is having a great week. I am almost embarrassed to post my 5 mile time after Goofyguy's anticipated 37 minute 5 miler. ;) I walked 5 in 1:11 last night, Hines did 2.5 with me until I took him home, I was dragging him behind me. I don't know what his deal was, I'm wondering if it was the heat, it was about 80 degrees when we started and he has a nice thick black coat. I think I'll do my 4 miles around 8:00 tonight so it's cooler for my baby. :goodvibes I have 11 this weekend, I'm looking forward to doing it.

Dave-- :cheer2: that is great news about your shins! It sounds like you found a great doctor.

Carrie--Weren't family vacations the best? Loading up in the station wagon for hours, playing while your parents drove half way across the country? I have 4 sisters (yes, 5 daughters for my lucky Dad!) so we were packed in the car, I remember fighting over the center spot in the front seat because nobody wanted to sit there. Those were the best times!!

Jodi-- :wizard: on dealing with your allergies!! If you do get to do your 10 miler this weekend, definitely soak in an ice bath or you won't be able to get out of bed Sunday morning for your 5K! I hate ice baths, but I swear by them, they are the best things ever.

Kim--How was Boston??

Tiff--The Minnie is coming right up! It's the same day as the Flying Pig, so we'll all be racing together. What time do you start? The Pig starts at 6:00, I'll be thinking of all you Minnie's.

Amy--Chris in the bottom 3????? No way! :confused3 I tried voting for him for way over an hour and could only get through once.

Have a great day everyone!! Talk to you guys later.

Hey Guys!

Well, my first 5K is scheduled for Saturday. It's been beautiful here all week but now they are predicting Saturday to be cold and rainy! Yikes! I don't mind running the rain...could be interesting. Any advice from those of you who have done races in bad weather conditions?

Amy--Chris in the bottom 3????? No way! I tried voting for him for way over an hour and could only get through once.

Krista, I have ALWAYS wondered if AI plays with us a bit. It seems that all the "favorites" end up in the bottom 3 at some time to create drama. JMHO though ;) . I may be dillusional but I think chris is amazing...and I loved his rendition of "What A Wonderful World" :lovestruc . Anyway....I've always wondered. The day that Kelly Pickler ends up in the bottom 3 I'll be sure it's slightly fixed, her fan base is HUGE is seems. I knew Ace was going home but thought for sure it would be him and Elliot in the bottom 2 NOT Chris. Although I like Elliot....he seems so sweet.

Okay folks....back to running talk. Sorry for hijacking this thread  .

Dave: I would pay additional for those cool socks! Thanks again for coordinating this. I'm so glad you had a successful PT appointment.

Jodi: Hope those allergies feel better. It's so hard to run when you are congested :(.

Thanks Carrie- I hope the orthotics do the trick. We'll see.

Check the siggy--i UNDERSTAND your pain!

Injuries are tough.

You may look into some cross training--bike or swimming.

If you have access to a pool and a swim vest--you can even look into water running. (vest allows you to stay vertical--you do this in the deep end and your feet do not touch the ground. If you get a good cardio workout running--this simulates running very well in an impact-free environment).

If you can do elliptical--that is supposed to work wonders. A couple seasons ago--we had a girl on our team (local team) who was sentenced to the elliptical for 2/3 of her training--and she was still able to run at Disney (once she was cleared for running).

Complaints are part of the training and it is what we are here to help with.

Minnie -- I am so glad you decided to take your son out of school. I really do NOT see an issue when parents do that, as long as the kids aren't behind in school and make up the work. I think family time is just as important as time in the classroom, if not more important. You are going to have an awesome time together! :goodvibes

Tiff -- I am with you on the heat thing. I am definitely worried about the heat and humidity for the Minnie. I am hoping it will motivate me to finish even sooner, to get out of the sun! :sunny:

Amy -- Your vacation sounds absolutely wonderful! I am sure you needed it after the huge time commitment of the production, right? I can't believe how much you worked out while you were away. Kudos to you, my friend! :thumbsup2

Goofyguy-- your pace is amazing! Congratulations!

jodi -- I have heard that allergies are worse this year than ever, all over the country, and that April has been particularly terrible. Take good care of yourself. Hope your meeting went well last night. I can't even imagine what it would be like to make lifetime! :cloud9: You and Sunny are my guiding lights in that regard.

Dave -- your appointment sounds awesome! I am so glad you found someone who knows what he is doing. I have become such a HUGE proponent of stretching ever since I seriously impaired my hip during the 1/2 I am sure due to insufficient stretching ahead of time. Cannot wait to hear whether this improves your pain level. Good luck!

Lisa -- Congrats on getting back into a routine. I know how crazy busy life gets with little ones and work, so you must be so proud of yourself!

I have nothing to report, training-wise for last night. It was supposed to be a non-wogging day, so I didn't feel too guilty about standing around talking with my neighbor and watching her gorgeous twin toddlers play outside. I so rarely get home in time to enjoy the daylight. Howard and I have two nights with DD17 before DS12 gets home Saturday, so I am hoping we can do some fun stuff with her. There are so many changes going on in her life right now. She just officially registered for UD (which means Mom & Dad paid housing and tuition deposits! ;) ) and we are going to "Delaware Decision Days" on Saturday for accepted students, even though she has already made her decision. I figure the major-specific session and the walking tours of the campus, and hopefully, an opportunity to learn more about campus life and meet some people in the marching band/colorguard will all make it a very enjoyable day for her. Of course, the whole time I am there, I will be looking forward to seeing DD when he arrives home that afternoon! :cloud9: In any event, I will try to get out for a wog or to the gym (depending on weather) around 6 am to get enough miles in this weekend.

I feel like poop today. I didn't feel well last night but we HAD to go food shopping. I had such a bad stomach ache I thought I was going to pass out from the pain right in the Stop & Shop. Then last night I didn't sleep well, just to make matters worse. So this morning the alarm went off at 4:30am. I got up and turned it off and went back to bed. :sad2:

I think I left my motivation on the ship. I really could have trained this morning, but, well, to be honest, I just didn't feel like it.

I'm having too many days like that lately. I've been doing this since November and so far April has been my worst month. :rolleyes2

But here's two things to share with you all....

Last night I stopped to get gas in my car. DH was driving and he likes to set the odometer whenever he gets gas because he's always checking mileage. Anyway he left it like that so I just reset it this morning when I left for work. So when I pulled into the driveway it work it said 13.1. Thats exactly how far I live from my work. I'm taking it as a sign.

Speaking of work, the Extreme Makeover people are doing a house right by our site, so they have asked if they can park their trucks here and also use a couple of parking lots to shuttle spectators back and forth. I never realized that show was such a big deal. But apparently it is as they are expecting THOUSANDS of people here over the next week or so! :faint:

The other thing I forgot to mention (OK guess I had three things to tell you) was a funny story from my vacation last week.

When DH and I were on the track I set my Garmin for time, because to be honest that's all I know how to set it for so far. Well, apparently I had the GPS going and the Virtual Partner because when I was done it told me I had beat my partner by 17.5 miles and I had done 22.3 miles in 50 minutes! Whooo hoo, baby! Can you imagine?? I'm getting pretty good, don't you think?!?! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2: OK, so it didn't take into acount that the ship was doing 20-some knots.....Humor me here. :lmao:

My apolgies to everyone. I haven't been responding to a darn thing all week. I'm reading all your posts but I am so pressed for time at work since I am STILL playing catch up. Plus I am involved in Take Our Children To Work Day which is next Thursday so we are really crunching here. I can't wait until it's over.

But Dave....I'd pay extra for the socks. Or buy a couple more pairs. Either way is fine with me.

Judy

I'm sorry you weren't feeling well last night. And it probably wiped you out for this morning, but we expect you to get out of that bed and onto the DM tomorrow morning! I think you need to find a movie tonight that you really want to see and set it up for tomorrow morning to motivate yourself out of bed. And, just think of how awesome you are going to feel driving that route in the future, knowing that you will be able to walk all those miles!!! Awesome motivation!

Thanks to everyone for their advice on my training situation. I think that a couple of you probably had it right-- I think Goofy is doable so long as I lower my expectations and take it really easy on the half come race day. There will be times when I'm going to miss a run or two and that's just going to have to be OK. I'll really focus on training hard now and hopefully that will help a bit come fall. As my boss put it as well... " You need to have something going besides school and work, otherwise you'll burn out." Running= Cheaper than therapy, Better for you than Booze. :thumbsup2

I ran Tuesday evening--- 35 minutes (3/2) and averaged 9:22/mile pace. I will need to go run this evening, but as we speak I am being talked into playing golf this afternoon. Either way, I'll get the run in.

I need to get to class-- Happy training all!

I did my 30 minute run today and it was not good. My second bad run of the week. My 5K on Saturday isn't looking too promising. My legs were stiff and I felt sluggish. I'm starting to get this tiny little pain in my heal.....don't speak the P.F. thing....that's what I'm worried about :sad2: . I'm thinking happy thoughts! Anyway....not sure of my exact time but I felt like I was running in molasses...just had zero energy.

Now Saturday is supposed to be cold and rainy for the race. Do you guys think I should take it easy tomorrow and skip KBX, maybe do some yoga or take a walk instead of an intense workout? I was hoping to finish the 5k in under 30...right now I'd be happy to finish it  .

Hey all... I have been wicked crazy at work. I am in sales and it has been quite a week... which is good because I have been in a slump. But I get home at night and just want to crash.

Yesterday I mustered out 20 minutes on the bike and a 1/2 mile wog during my lunch break. Nothing tonight because DD2 has gynastics (have you ever seen a crazy 3 year old do gymnastics??? I need to post pics).

Oh and DD1 told me the other day that she wants to practice running so she can race with me and get a medal!! She is 5!! I was reading posts here and she saw the Donald medal for the 1/2. I told her I will get one when I race and she was so jealous she almost started crying. I told her she could wear mine.

Dave - when you get your new shin stretches, can you share those with us?? I am curious. My shins ache when I run, but not afterwards. Am I not stretching enough??

OK, gotta run and do my job!

Krista-we start at 6:30 so we will be running together :thumbsup2 Good luck with the Pig! That sounds like a fun race.

Jen-DS did the Chicken little run & got a medal this year. He even got a race photo of him crossing the finish line. There were even kids being pushed in running strollers & then taken out right before the finish line so they could run accross it. They change it every year based off a popular movie. Honestly I no longer recommend kid races. Too crowded, too disorginazed. No limits to registrants--which means that they cannot properly predict.

My girls will do a 5K and if they can't do that, no races. But I have calculated, that we will finish much much sooner. The medal is the same for teh kids races and 5K.

ETA: the straw that broke the camel's back....

Reverse age groups--oldest kids go first (something I don't like--but hey--that is the way it is).

this year only-they let the babies go before my daughter's group. They let kids in DIAPERS---go before the 3yo's--the kids--who would need a potty after waiting around for 120 minutes for their race to start. To say we were mad is the understatement of the year. the volunteers were great--it was the stupidity of the CM's that had me going--their excuse...we have X times as many kids as last year. :confused3 :confused3 Really carried little weight with me b/c it showed that they cannot properly manage a children's event. :guilty:

What have you people done to me????

Is it not bad enough that you made me fly to GA to get my 20-miler in last year?

Now, I discover I'm on the Minnie mailing list! Next thing I know, I'm checking hotels and flights and trying to figure out how to convince dh we need to speond $600 to go down on Friday and come back on Sunday! (Hints that I signed up to win the free trip have gotten me nowhere BTW)

I want to know where my favorite sane, rational couch potato went!

I cannot go. I went to Disney once this year, am going to Alaska in the fall and will be back at WDW in January. Repeat with me. I cannot go. I cannot go.

Solo - If dh decides to leave me over this, do you want his ticket and entry? :rotfl:

Okay, Carrie, you got me intrigued! What "Minnie mailing list"? I have not heard a single word from Disney re: my Minnie registration. I am in a panic. Have I mentioned that before? And I have no working email address to which to make an inquiry. It keeps getting bounced back to me as non-working address.

I actually got a generic type email soliciting people to register. I sent another email to them, asking them to confirm my registration. I am starting to freak out a bit here.
Anyone have a phone number? I can't remember the number I called to request the DVC registration form. I'll go check the website again.

Okay, just got off the phone with an awesome CM named Mel at Disney sports who confirmed that DVC registrations are handled by the Track Shack in Orlando, which is the charge that showed up on my credit card statement.
He gave me a phone number and contact name at TS to call tomorrow to confirm. YEAH!!! I will feel much better tomorrow after I make sure I'm on their list.
BTW, he did say registration is almost closed for the 15K. Carrie -- ya hear that, honey? If you are seriously considering it, ya gotta get your tush in gear! :teeth: Come on, come and play with us!

Carrie - Absolutely! That's the argument I gave for taking DD15 out of school for a day and driving from NC to WDW for a weekend trip just so I could run the Minnie - and I've never run before!

Dave - I want your PT! As for the socks, I can add a couple of pairs or pay more, either way.

Cam - I got an email this afternoon from WDW Sports Marathon confirming details for the weekend, but then I didn't register thru DVC.

Judy - You'll have to give us all the scoop on Extreme Makeover. I've heard that Ty is almost never there - would love to know for sure. DD has been devastated ever since she heard that he doesn't actually do "Ty's special room!"

DD is gone until Sunday on her band trip, DH is gone until Saturday at his mom's - it's just the dog and me, and the dog is sick! I hope it's a short-lived tummy bug - I did not plan to spend my days alone cleaning up after my darling pooch. Going to head out for another mile or 1.5 mile walk - did a mile Tuesday and didn't hurt during or after, so I'm taking that as a good sign. It's either walk or go shopping - somehow every time we go to WDW I seem to justify buying new clothes...

OK, well here's my update so far, since I haven't really posted one all week.

Monday - 20 min wog
Tuesday - gym weights/20min elliptical
Wednesday - 20 min wog
Thursday - gym weights/20min elliptical

So far so good. I have excersized everyday this week. I am getting up at 6:30 everyone morning so that I can get my kids and myself out of the house early enough for a run before it gets too hot. I have it worked out perfectly too. I push the 18month old and my 4 year old rides his bike!!

Morning Everyone,

Well, I am officially a WW Lifetime Member as of last night :woohoo: I did gain a couple of pounds due to the Easter holiday weekend but I'm not worried that will come off in no time.

Looks like I will be doing my MS Walk in the rain on Sunday

I'm still a little behind on my training schedule. Tonight I will have to do my 3 miles on the threadmill......not sure if I will get to do my 10 miles this weekend - the 5 mile walk is on Sunday though.....maybe I can do a 5 mile run on the threadmill Sunday (I know it isn't exactly what is needed but I want to get on with training).

I haven't really had the opportunity to read everyone's posts, hopefully I will get to do that tonight as well. :thumbsup2

Have a great day everyone,

I hope your meeting went better than last time. I remember they were giving you a lot of grief last time, and I hope you didn't get that this time.

BTW: Thanks for doing the MS walk. I really congratulate you for that. Don't worry about raising the money. You are out there supporting the cause, and that is just as important. I have someone very close to me with MS and it's a cause I really care a lot about. You go girl!

Well, I am officially a WW Lifetime Member as of last night :woohoo:

CONGRATULATIONS, JODI!
I hope to be joining you soon - only 8 more lbs. to goal for me.

Carrie - I would also vote for a trip for the Minnie. But then again I am a bad influence and an instigator when it comes to anything WDW!

I have been MIA again lately. I can't remember when I last posted, but I did a 5 mile walk/run in 1:09 on Tuesday. Yesterday was 3 miles in 41:49. I skipped crosstraining on Weds. since I was thoroughly exhausted. Yesterday's 3 miles was awfully hard since I was still so darn tired. I also had a fever of 100.6 last night, so I might be coming down with something.

I am going to try to sleep as much as I can this afternoon before Chad leaves for work. Then I am going to bed tonight after Zack goes down around 8. I have a 7 mile walk/run on my schedule for tomorrow and want to enjoy it - not dread it has I have been this week being so tired. I really need to get control of this lack of sleep thing - it's killing me! I also *need* to do the 7 miles under the 15 min. Minnie requirement to build my confidence up. I am so paranoid about being swept!

Hey guys.....I need some Plantar Fasciitis advice.

I woke up and my first steps were sore this morning, in the heal area. So I've confirmed to myself that I most likely have early symptoms of PF. Yesterday I had to run my first .5 miles thru some mild heal pain. I plan to run the 5K on Saturday b/c my pain is minimal and just in the early stages. I may take next week off from running and do my XT activities along with yoga. Do you guys think I need to see a doctor or should I R.I.C.E it and see if the break from running helps. I think my problem started when I was running in my trail running shoes in AZ. I don't think they support my feet like the Asics Kayanos do. I may need orthotics...not sure if I have to see an ortho doc for those? My feet are really flat and I over pronate. I think that makes me a good candidate for PF :teeth: .

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to let this get out of hand :). TIA!!!!

I did 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1% with 4 min running at 4.2 today. :teeth:

OK not as good as my "20 miles in 50 min" walk....but I was happy with the running, as pathetic as it might seem when compared with most of you.

MouseDogMom - I haven't actually seen the house yet, but I know our parking lot at work is filled with containers, several flatbed trucks of wood, and a lot of contractors trucks. I may drive over there next week to check it out though. If anyone is interested.....http://www.alure.com/09-emhe.html

OK now that everyone knows where I work....

Jodi - OMG that is fabulous! I'm so happy for you on reaching your lifetime! :thumbsup2

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I have to report that there was 3/3 or 4/4 to report. By Wednesday my back/leg hurt badly enough that I stopped my dreadmill routine. The disk issue is not something that is simply going to go away. I do not want to injection or surgery so I am not sure what more I can do at this point.

I wonder if I was pushing too hard on the dreadmill? I might try easy 30 min walks instead of 45 min wogs to see if that helps at all.

Sorry for the bummer post :guilty:

Judy -- Good job on getting on the TM this morning. I hope you are even prouder of yourself than I am of you, sweetie! :grouphug:

Dave -- Awesome article!

Jodi -- congrats on lifetime! I sooo want to be there. I realized this morning that it is not enough to want that every once in a while or even 20x/day. I have to want it enough 24/7 to work toward it constantly. All the little slips and splurges won't derail me, but they are certainly delaying me. I HAVE to get serious to accomplish what you have.(of course, I have to lose the equivalent of a baby elephant, comparatively, to do it, but it is not impossible! Okay, I exaggerate. What's the next smaller size baby?)

Yeah, all this, while I try to figure out how to maximize our Disney Dining plan over Minnie weekend, since they are making us buy 3 days worth, instead of two. I won't even tell you how much "fun" I am planning! :teeth:

On a good note, although I think she has been busy enough not to have posted recently, Rhonda has not given up on me even though my pace hasn't significantly improved. Hopefully, all her power yoga classes that are certainly improving her cardio fitness will not drive her to leave me in the dust. Aren't we sooo lucky to have fellow WISHers who are willing to put their egos and personal objectives behind the objective of being a good friend and sharing the experience? Sorry to go :offtopic: but I am just so relieved and happy, and FINALLY, getting very excited! I leave 2 weeks from today!

OK, I'm having a much better day today than the rest of the week. Maybe I got thrown out of my rhythm with Easter. Maybe I had been getting run down at work this week, but I've been having a great day today.

Judy- the Bingham article gave me goosebumps too. I don't need to push against my comfort limit every day. I don't want to set world records, but I definitely agree with the point of pushing beyond our comfort zone. The accomplishments I feel proudest of are those that occured when I pushed beyond my comfort zone. I really need to keep that in mind.

I went for a run/wog over lunch today. I'm listening to my PTist, and backing off on the running. I did my "activation" exercises before going out, and walked ~0.5 miles to the University track where I alternated running and walking laps. I think the cushioning of the track really helped my shins. I had downloaded some new music on my MP3 player, and I just let myself enjoy the nice weather, listen to some fun music, and have fun. My total workout was 4 miles in 52:20 min or 13:04 mpm pace, but that includes walking to and from the track. I did the 3 miles on the track alternating walking and running laps in 12:38, 12:09, and 11:03. Wow, negative splits, cool! I think I need to back off on running the 10 min miles for a while, mix in some walking, and give my shins a break. I also iced my shins for 10 min each leg immediately after getting back to the gym, and they don't feel bad at all right now.

The weekend is off to a good start. Have fun everyone!

I was thinking more of the limits I put on myself by thinking I'm not good enough, can't do it so don't even bother... This is one of the things I study in our behavioral neuroscience laboratory. We are very interested in what are the triggers for clinical depression. One symptom is called "learned helplessness" and is just what you described above. The idea that a patient, an animal, whatever, learns that no matter what it does it doesn't matter so it might as well not do anything. It has been taught to be helpless and not even try to change it's situation. It is an extremely powerful phenomenon and not an easy mental status to break out of, but it is critical too. So yes, find your limits and surpass them, that way you will break out of any negative mindsets and thinking. We can all do a lot more than we think we can.

Man, I wish I could figure out how to break out of this mindset. I am really struggling w/ my mt. biking right now for this very reason. I get so afraid of falling (which I do every time) that I don't ride aggressively, and in my timidity, I fall! I was really feeling strong a couple of weeks ago and then I start to realize that I'm still not very good, so I back off big time! I didn't even go on thurs. to give myself a mental break. I did run and swim though. When you solve the problem for your lab rats, let me know :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Lynn - I decided to find out if I could swim a mile. I did w/ no problem, but I think my time was really slow. How long does it usually take you to swim a mile? There is a 1/2 ironman here in AR, in August (I know, really hot!!!) Anyway, you want to come and keep me company???? I think I can talk Phil into it.

"If one can stick to the training throughout the many long years, then will power is no longer a problem. It's raining? That doesn't matter. I am tired? That's besides the point. It's simply that I just have to."

Seriously, I think with all these things it comes down to positive reinforcement and conditioning. You need to have some good experiences on your bike without falling before you try to do more aggressive things where you might fall. I think it's the same with my running too. I need to have some easy good runs where it doesn't hurt because if everytime I go our to run it hurts then I am just going to associate running with pain (major negative reinforcer).

You guys are really inspiring me today. And boy do I need it! Thanks for posting the link Dave, I read it and it's just what I need.

Tomorrow is my first race. I'm soooo nervous! I feel like I'm going to be so slow. I checked out last years results and  :faint: .....these people are FAST! And I am clearly NOT fast LOL! Because at least I'm going to get up tomorrow....put on my running clothes....and run in the cold rain! That just HAS to stand for something, right? Even if I finish dead last, I still got out there and did it.

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts. You guys made me laugh and reminded me what this is all about! :cheer2:

Jodi - Congratulations on Lifetime, and good luck in the MS Walk. Hope it doesn't rain TOO much!

Dave - The essay was great. It's way too easy to live in the comfort zone. Deciding to do the Minnie was definitely a first step for me, since I'd NEVER committed to anything that required actually working at something!

Kristi - Hope you're feeling better!

Amy - Good luck on your 5K! Don't worry about coming in last - remember,
DFL>DNF>>DNS
Translation: dead friggin last beats out did not finish and they both greatly
trump did not start.
And more good luck with the PF. I don't have any advice on that subject - just to take it easy and don't overdo it.

What a motivational day for this group! And boy did it all hit home. The main reason I'm trying the Minnie is to prove to myself that I can set a goal and accomplish it. I know some of you have said that training for and running marathons has made a difference in other areas of your life, too, and I'm already feeling different about myself just because I'm out there doing this. I think that's why I was so bummed about being hurt, but now I'm going to do it whether I walk or run, just so I can say I finished the goal I set for myself. And I don't know if I'd have gotten this far without everyone here keeping me motivated!

Hope everyone has a great weekend - good runs for those of you racing or planning distant runs...

The fall has only allowed me 1 slooow run/walk this week. Appreciate everyone's good advice on recovery of twisted ankle/skinned knee/bruised hip. Still have 14 days till Indy Mini so we'll see if I can't get back in the game this weekend.

Amy: Congrats on your first 5k. Another step on your adventure to WDW marathon. Listen to your body...we all forget that sometimes and think we have to push thru it and stick to the plan no matter what. Make it about finishing, not time. Don't let the jack rabbits bother you, your "time" will come.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Keep moving forward... :cheer2:

Ok, I'm struggling btwn new dsl and playoff hockey. LIfe's full of tough choices, isn't it? Where's that Ursula smiley when you need it?

Yoda has me :rotfl:

Terri - Ther is a form for DVCers. I know we get discounts on half and full, so I would assume Goofy would fall in there. Let me know if you need the form e-mailed.

WOW WOW WOW!!! When my motivation was starting to drop, all I had to do was come on here and read all these positive and motivating posts!! Thanks everyone!!!

My week has been nuts at work and tonight I was just plum tuckered out... So at 7:30 I knew I had to do something. It was raining outside so that was out (I'm a wimp!). I headed to the basement and wogged 2 miles and the treadmill. It was a tough wog, but I did it and am proud!!!

Amy - My first 5K is May 6 and like you I am so scared. I see all these super fast runners practicing at the Y and I know they will be racing. There is no way I can keep up. They smoke me on the indoor track. I will be wogging, but dernit, I won't give up. Even if it takes me 45+ minutes and the Fun Run starts before I finish the timed race... I will be wogging across that finish line. Good thing there are no sweepers!!!! I think I dread hills the most because I have not run hills yet. The YMCA is the start point and there are several hills near. They won't release the path until the morning of the race! :furious:

OK, I need a shower. Thanks for all the pick me up posts! You have no idea how much they helped me (and this isn't the first time!)

Just a quick post - I got in 3.11 miles in on the Threadmill tonight, 5.3 pace, 11.19 min/mile.....done it in 34.50 minutes. I little bit different from what I've been getting with Garmin but not too bad and I ran the entire time :woohoo:

Tomorrow - I will catch up with everyone and do my crosstraining.

Looking forward to the walk on Sunday (even if it is going to rain). :)

Carrie - I would appreciate it if you could e-mail the form for me (or point me in the right direction of where to find it.)

I looked on the race website and the DVC member site and couldn't find it.

Thanks!

As I was trying to post last night our cable, and therefore our internet went down. So much for that post with comments to many of you. I do still have some of my notes, but not much time after all my catching up that I had to do.

Lisa I think I will have to try deep water walking. So far I have inly done water walking where your feet actually touch.

Dave Got blocked out from posting that I still want the socks yesterday. Hope I am still on your list. The Bingham article was inspiring! Thanks for sharing it.

I'm afraid I could BE one of your lab rats! :earseek: I recently realized that I have spent years coasting through life trying for reasons that I cannot possibly explain to conserve energy. I have been trying to surpass my limits this past week and change that mind set. That's what got me to start wogging again instead of only walking, and why I increased my laps in the pool. No more coasting to save energy for me! :moped:

Jodi Congrats on making WW lifetime! :cheer2:

Good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend! Have a great time and enjoy your journey!

Morning Everyone,

Kevin--19 credit hours?? Working full time?? Training for a marathon??? Wow!! Good luck!! Couldn't have said it better Krista :thumbsup2

KristaI ordered a couple of books for my training (for the Goofy)....I will be reading up a bit at my hairdressers this morning. Is your husband taking the training schedules off of Hal Higdon's site or did he go through the books? I have Hal's "How to train" and "Marathon."

In addition to those books I also have "Food Guide for Marathoners." I know at some point I am going to need more than what WW does......I will still look at my WW stuff for portion control but might take on the ideas in the book. Boy, I have a lot of reading to do. :)

Dave - love the John Bingham essay.....thanks for the link.

I still have to reply about the socks.....Is it okay to post here? I will go with 3 pairs. Just let me know the details when the time comes.

Oh, I know you asked about the WW meeting. The leader didn't give me a hard time this time around, she was away at Atlantic City - so we had a subsitute leader :teeth: , although I doubt I would have had a problem because I ended up gaining 3 pounds (not a big deal, not a true gain).

Krista/Cam: You guys can totally make WW lifetime :wizard: .

Good Job Dave! :woohoo:

Amy Good luck with your run!

Well, have to start getting ready to go out and get the hair done.....Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Amy- just wanted to wish you luck on your 5k. Don't worry about others being faster than you. Just do the best that you can. You're only racing against yourself - pushing your own comfort zone so to speak. Let us know how it goes.

Dena/RunningLilo- I just love your screen name and avatar. Good luck on your 5k too. Have fun in Atlanta. I hope you post more pictures like you did last time. Those were fun!

Jen- good for you for getting on the treadmill and wogging. Isn't it such a great feeling when you don't even feel like running, make yourself do it, and get through it. WTG!

Jodi- enjoy the MS Walk tomorrow. You're doing a great thing! I've got you down for 3 pairs of s/m socks. Have fun with your hair appointment. Where are the pictures?

Nancy- Yup, you're on the sock list. I have you down for 2 pairs of s/m socks. Want any more? I had to get 120 pairs and so far only 90 are spoken for. Good for you in trying to exceed your limits and comfort zone. One step at a time, right?

I don't have time to read everyone's progress, but I wanted tp post my walk/run while I have the info here in front of me.

I just did 7 miles (first time at that distance):
13:59
13:50
13:53
13:32
14:06
13:49
13:39
1:36:38

I am happy I am under the 15 min/mile Minnie pace, but a little disappointed not to be a bit further under the requirement. But 7 miles! Who knew I could ever do that? :teeth:

Hi!! Just back from my first race! :goodvibes What a cool experience....it was so great to be among so many runners. Everyone was incredibly supportive and helpful. My friend went with me...she's FAST so we didn't run together...but she showed me the ropes and introduced me to her Team in Training friends. They were GREAT and I paced nicely with them and made some new friends today :thumbsup2 . They just ran their first marathon in Phoenix this past January, so they really understand my journey and were full of lots of advice and information.

I have to say it was surreal at times. There were moments when I didn't want to look back because i thought I might be the very last person :confused3 . But I wasn't. And when at 2 miles the guy was yelling out times and he said 17:56 I nearly fell over :rotfl2: . "You talkin' to me" ??? :cheer2: But then THE HILL hit and WOW what a hill. At one point I got a bad stitch in my side and stopped to take some deep breaths, my pace group kept going so I was on my own. A really nice lady ran up to me and said "you're almost there, keep going". So I started running with her. She told me that this is one of the hardest 5Ks she's ever run. And apparently she runs a bunch?! I forgot to look at the clock when I crossed the finish line....I was too busy sprinting  . But my friends who finished before me a little bit came in at 29:10 I think? Not sure where that puts me but I watched them cross so I'm still hoping that I broke 30:00. I'll have to report back later when the times are up on compuscore. We waited around to see if two of the people in our little group placed...one was a boy who finished REALLY fast and the other was my friend who came with me....she forgot to check her time when she finished too so had no idea how well she did. But they had some sort of "glitch" with the scores/timing so we decided to head home.

All in all it was a super experience despite the cold temps, wind and rain. I also won a door prize at the expo! And got a free chair massage. :woohoo: Who knew races were so much fun? You guys did ;) . I'm hooked :cool1: .

Jodi and Dena....sure hope you girls had a great experience too! :cheer2:

Thank you again for putting the sock order together again :) Hmm....picture - do you mean of my hair style? See I kind of hide from the camera :teeth: Most times. I wish it wasn't calling for rain tomorrow or else I would have brought my camera.

You probably won't see any pictures of me until May - when I do the Breast Cancer 5k (Mother's Day weekend). I'm looking so forward to it!

I'm sure I will have a blast at the walk even if it rains all day.
