View Full Version : How did you choose your college?

We all have one thing in common, we are all at college, but how did you get there?
I personally took the "cop-out" route. I really didn't care where I went to college, I got into 4 of my 5 choices (UCLA, Cal Poly:SLO, UC Davis, Northern Illinois) with my only rejection from UC San Diego. I thought long and hard and eliminated Northern Illinois when I went to visit it and it was 3 degrees. Next I drove down to UCLA and decided that the drive sucked so that was eliminated. I saw no pros and cons between Davis and Cal Poly so I flipped a coin, it came out tails, so I signed my letter of intent for Cal Poly. Oh and I'm serious.

I know i'm in England, but we go through the same process. We pick 6 uni's to apply to, then you get offers and pick first and insurance choices. I chose a few that i liked, then padded out with a couple of randoms. The main thing that made me pick nottingham was the :sunny: on its open day. It was just such a lovely day and everyone was outside drinking on the grass. So off i went :moped:
Can't believe uni's nearly over, does anyone else feel :surfweb:?

I only had two choices, the San Francisco Art Institute and FIDM. Then I did a sumer program at San Francisco and decided that I didn't like it, so I applied to FIDM and got in, so here I am. My friends and counselor were rather worried/annoyed to find out that I'd only applied to the one place, but oh well.

I had my heart set on going to the University of Wisconsin, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought the size of UW would get to me and I wouldn't like it. Plus the fact that nearly half my high school just migrates there... So I decided to go to Marquette after I got a scholarship. And to think I almost didn't even apply there. :teeth:

Well the funny thing is I always swore I wouldn't come here. I'm the third generation to come here, so you might say it's in my blood. It's also about 45 minutes from home (which I thought was too close) and has a lot of students (it's either 12 or 15 thousand, can't really remember which), and since it's like 3 or 4 times the size of my hometown, I always said it was too big. But here I am at the University of NH.
I looked at it only because my mom made me. I discovered it kind of felt right. But so did other schools. The main reason I picked it was because I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life and they've got a lot of majors. I also chose it because there is awesome hockey here and I needed to have something to do on the weekends. But mostly it just felt right. I'm almost done my first year here, and am definitely happy with my choice. I've certainly had issues with the school (housing, registration issues, etc), but overall it's been a great fit, and I'm happy with it. Oh, and I have a major now too

I chose UNH cause of the location and the hockey. Also it had a high vet school acceptance rate - which doesn't even matter now because I switched. I also had friends who went here and whenever I visited with them I had a good time. Oh and I didn't get into my first choice so that made it a lot easier for me.

Undergrad: I knew I loved it here at the University of Maryland when I first visited. It just felt right. I never regretted my choice- I'm going to miss this place!
Grad: I just made the decision less then a week ago but I applied to 5 masters programs. I didnt get into one, one that I got accepted to doesnt have what I am looking for in a program and the third is Penn State. I haven't heard from 2 schools yet (Maryland, where I am currently and CUNY Queens) but the deadline for Penn State was this past Monday so I couldn't wait any longer. Penn State has the best program for me in the worst location possible (middle of NOWHERE). Thank G-d it's only for two years.

I added Virginia Tech to my list at last minute...and ended up falling in love with the campus when I went on a tour. The people were great and I decided I would fit in great there..and I did! :) I had soo many fun times there. :rotfl: I BIG "NO COMMENT" on the specifics :teeth:
GO HOKIES!!
(By the way, I'm at UCF now. So close to Disney, YAY :cheer2: :yay:

I decided to go to NMU when I visited the campus as a Sophomore when my family just took at quick drive around it. I fell in love with the campus and the city of Marquette. After that I knew that I was going to Northern and wouldn't consider any other college (although my parents did make me apply to Grand Valley). My fifth years is coming to a close with graduation close at hand and I've loved every moment I've been here.

I chose Bridgewater at literally the last sec. I applied to five colleges got into them all then heard about Bridgewater and decided to apply, though it was after their deadline. I didn't go to visit any colleges and ended up picking Bridgewater because they had the most majors I could possibly be interested in (since I'm undecided), so I wouldn't have to transfer once I pick a major. I'm not in love with this college but it works for now.

I liked all the schools I got accepted to pretty much the same, so I put the names on pieces of paper, taped them to a dart board, and threw darts. The one time I actually hit the board, it came up SU.
actually ... of the schools I was accepted at, SU had the best broadcasting program, and I wanted to go into broadcasting. Well, 2 different choices of major (neither one of which was broadcasting) and 4 years later, I end up with a degree (in Info Tech), and have no idea what I want to do with my life.

Seems like so long ago...
Anyway, at first I was planning to major in Music - Instrumental Performance. So, I applied at Virginia Tech and James Madison University. At that point in time, I really wanted to go to JMU because of the music program, but I loved VT too. Both schools were within a few hours of home too. Well, then I was accepted to both and offered some scholarships at both. However, I received some bills that detailed how much I had to pay and the deposits required, etc... at that point in time my families financial situation couldn't afford to send me to college, so I was on my own and ended up having to turn down both VT and JMU :guilty:
Associates & Bachelors degrees:
It all worked out in the end though. As the student with the highest GPA at my high school that decided to go to the local community college, I was given a full 2 year scholarship to get my associates degree. I finished that and then transferred to Averett College (now Averett University) where I earned my BS. (In business rather than music).
Masters degree:
Then came thoughts of grad school and I was considering exploring the computer field more. I examined the MS in computer science programs at VT and Old Dominion University. Again, I was told I would be accepted by the program chairs at both institutions; however, I only applied at ODU. VT has a better CS program, but ODU also has a good CS program but is only a few minutes from the beach! VT is in the middle of no-where!!! So, I ended up at ODU and finished my MS degree in 2003.
Doctorate degree:
After finishing the MS, I started working at ODU full-time. At that point, I figured I might as well take advantage of the employee assistance program and earn another degree while I'm here. So, I started checking out the different PhD programs. Since I was working in higher education administration and knew I wanted to continue working in higher ed, I figured I might as well work on a PhD in Higher Education! In this case I decided to stay at ODU (rather than heading up to William and Mary or UVA) because it was 'free' and I wouldn't have to move (I had bought a house near ODU). I'm hoping to be done with this "final" degree in 2008...

I picked my college because it was the best school around for pilot training... but then because I'm colorblind I can't be a pilot, so sadly my school absolutely sucks for everything else, and because my mom works at Worcester State College, I get to go there for free, so I'm going there next year.

I picked Florida State University for 2 main reasons...they have one of the best music education programs in the country, and, with in-state tuition and scholarships, I'm going to school for free!
Anyone who's traveled around Florida can tell you that the north and south parts are totally different! I grew up in south Florida, and drive 8 hours up to school in Tallahassee. The worst part of the drive....all the Disney billboards on my way to Orlando! Don't have much money right now though, so I haven't been to WDW in years!
The cool thing, though, is that I'm hoping to do the College Program next spring. That would be so much fun!!! princess:

I started of playing footall at the Naval Academy in MD but then soon found that my personality didnt coincide with their way of life. So I left....then I went to a place called The College of the Holy Cross in worcester, MA for a couple of years, got fed up (good grades but just fed up with the atmosphere)...so now I am back home and going to University of South Florida in tampa, trying to get into med school or disney corporate...Who knows??? :confused3

Im in Tampa right now and it is North compared to like Ft Lauderdale or Naples. Hey Doc2b you didnt like Holy Cross. I think there campus is beautiful and its such a great school (which i am sure you already know). And yes Worcester can take some getting use to. I live like five minutes from Holy Cross. However right now I am enjoying the Beautiful Florida Weather at the University of Tampa

I finished my High School in Orlando and I decided to go to the University of Florida (UF). I did Early Decision and I got in! I decided to come here because of the great academics/environment/weather, plus the in-state tuition with a scholarship.
UF has one of the best Engineering Schools in the nation. It is also a Top University (according to US News, etc) and a member of the AAU (a group of ~68 universities with high academics and research, that includes the Ivies, Georgia Tech, etc).
Also, many Engineering recruiters come to UF to find interns, full-time prospects, etc. In fact, I will start my Disney Industrial Engineering Professional Internship this Summer! :cool1:
Top Companies such as Disney recruits Engineering people from UF, Georgia Tech, MIT, and Penn State.
So I think it was a great decision to come here. GO GATORS!

I was always torn between whether to go to Tulane or LSU. In the end, I decided that LSU had more to offer for a cheaper price. Plus, it isn't like it doesn't have any academic standing. People know of the diploma and respect it.
I'll be attending LSU for Computer Science in the fall so I guess I can consider myself a college student now. haha

no offense, but people know the diploma b/c they know the sport teams. but seriously, thats the only way to really get noticed unless your an ivy school.
Florida_Gator
04-28-2006, 09:49 PM
Uuaww, that is not necessarily true. Ivy Leagues are more focused on Medicine, Business and Law.
I am an Engineering major and I chose UF because it is a great Engineering school! I have a proof: Siemens recruiters spend time in attending career fairs at seven universities (including UF). You can see that by visiting the "siemenscampus" website
Disney also does pretty much the same thing! They have had great experience with UF Gator Engineering students and alumni. I know my opinion is biased but it is true... If you don't believe my words, please ask other companies (important ones) about UF Engineering students.
Therefore, I can say that an employer knows the diploma by the University's reputation and academics.

:grouphug: :grouphug: did you all know that the term Ivy League is used because The Ivy League is the conference of the athletic teams from those schools? Therefore I guess the Ivy League schools got their start because of their athletics as well as academics. UF, FSU, LSU, USC, UCLA, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc.. It's just a fact that these excellent schools at one time or another had phenominal athletic programs. There is nothing wrong with that, gives one the ability to balance beer drinking with academics. Because of this only the strong will survive. By the way, whether engineering, sales, or construction, it is the person not the college that makes the career. Look at Michael Eisner(CEO of Disney)...he went to denison university...what the heck is that, where the heck is that? I that even a school? But I can tell you one thing, he's one of the most well respected men in entertainment history. But then again I don't think anyone really cares where he went to school. SO the point is moot  :cool1:

I go to LSU!!! If I had to choose between Tulane or here, I'd pick LSU. Tulane is a good school but I don't think it is worth the extra tuition...but I am willing to admit that we have a reputation for being a big party school focused on football (and sometimes basketball or baseball if we are doing well, haha)... and not so much focused on academics, and I'd pretty much say that that is true sadly...
