I know it's been asked a thousand times, but... make this a thousand and one. Head is now spinning from looking at so many bags and reviews!
Here's what I need--a bag that will hold the following:
Nikon D60 with 18-105mm kit lens attached
Nikon 35mm/1.8 lens
Various accessories (spare batteries, memory cards, microfiber cloth)
Preferably also hold a gorillapod with head
Cell phone, credit cards, a TEENY little makeup bag with chapstick, face powder, etc in it. (Hey, I'm a girl, need to be able to do touch-ups)
It needs to be comfy enough to carry all day. Not a backpack--some kind of shoulder/messenger bag. Not super bulky/boxy--something that won't jut out real far...
And that's really it. I've completely given up on style/fashion at this point.
Any recommendations? Anyone have a similar kit and found the PERFECT bag for WDW?

If you buy the CD, then they are all yours, right? So I could take that CD to, say, Walmart and print 8x10s from them? Or is it all low res stuff that will only print 4x6s?

We have over 30 CDs from WDW. I have blown some of the pictures up to over 20X30 canvas. Very good quality.
We typically have over 300 images before editing and in the neighborhood of 700 after editing.
NOTE: You choose the size to format the picture before ordering. so if you plan on printing a picture in a size other than 5X7 (the default) make sure you make a version with the different size before you add the border or you will lose part of it in the final product.

Well I have sort of. I loive the Domke bags. The straight shoulder bag is here: http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke&itemnum=700-J5C and the traditional camera bag is here: http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=domke&itemnum=700-30B
Or, I also use a Vera Bradley large backpack for my camera, lenses, and my other stuff. I don't wear it as a backpack, I sling it on one shoulder.
Try googling camera bag for more options. Sometimes you can find good hints in discussion forums. There was also a thread on here by Pea-n-Me on camera bags last summer, and another thread that is more recent called "show me?" that has a lot of gear bags on it. Happy hunting! :)

I ordered the photo CD and was not happy! we had taken 86 photos and I up loaded photos and stuff, but when I got my CD the photos I up loaded were not there.
The photos I got other people to take of me and my family were better then the photopass people.
I have some bad pictures on my photopass this past trip, I guess it depends on the photographer, they are not profesional photographers but some of them take great pictures, others don't.

The pics have very good resolution, you can even make them bigger than 8x10. I made a big one for my mom, a poster size.

k so i need some help here! lol as always! the last time we were there they were just starting to use the card thigns, so this cd thing is totally new to me. so you pay 99 i think it said for the cd and then you fill it at the parks(great idea) and then you come home and load em up/enter the code whatever, then you have to pay for the prints as well? am i right? so can someone explain to me how it's a savings? i mean we normally get maybe 5 pics the entire trip but will be going with the kids this year so im sure there will be more. and is there a way to check before i get home what i have? last time i got my pooh pics done after waiting an hr to see him and when i went to the pickup place that nite, they were not loaded! i was so upset, but too tired to be rushed back to get a pic again.
OK! If you're planning on taking lots of pictures during your trip (like I do :rolleyes1 ) then go for the CD. You pay $99.00 plus shipping regarless of the amount of your pictures. If you are only getting a few then you might get those, to me the CD is better, because you can edit the pictures, add borders, make them black and white etc and then you can take them to wal mart and pay way less for the prints.
If you get the CD make sure you take pictures with every single photographer you see at the parks (like I do :rolleyes1 ) I am like the photopass stalker :rotfl:
When you get into the parks you get a photopass card, you can use that card the rest of the trip just make sure you write the card number or take a picture of it, in case you lose your card all you need is that number. Then after your trip go to www.disneyphotopass.com and enter your card or cards ID's, edit your pictures and you can go to the other link I left buy the cd, they will send you an email with a code and when all your are done editing your pictures (remember you only have 30 days and your pics will expire) order your cd and on the promo code lane, enter the code and your account will be ZERO because your cd is alredy paid .

Remember that during the slow parts of the year that photopass photographers will off the "special" pictures. But during the busy parts of the year you have to ask for it. They will not deny your request....
Moral or the story, it does not hurt to ask

Actually during busy times. They may "turn off" special shots. Because of how long it takes to go in and edit them they turn them off so they don't get days behind. Or when they get days behind they turn them off.
I've been several times in August and December where they turned off the Tink shot because of back-up. We asked for it, and we've been told that they were not doing those shots that day. They normally only turn them off for 1-3 days.
Thanks Kaffinito... I will look at the Domke bags again.
We leave in a month for WDW so I need to find something SOON!

Oh yes, I did too. I went from 350 pictures to over 1,000 :rolleyes1 and I could have taken more if my DH and kids weren't rushing me all the time to get to the rides
Look for the photopass guys and have fun, if you go during the holidays some resorts have photographers in the lobby, we had our pictures taken at the grand floridian and at the animal kingdom lodge last year, beautiful decorations :lovestruc also look for the 'magic' pictures, or ask the photographers if the do magic pictures. Like these...

Can you please clarify? There have been a couple of posts that said pre-order after you get back?? I'm confused, how does that work? Do you still get the $99 price or pay the full $149? I have been hesitating to preorder in case we don't get that many taken when we are there. However, if I can wait and see how many times we can stop a photographer, then that is a bonus:banana:
I would appreciate it if someone could explain how this works.

OK! I know is confusing I was like that too.
You can 'pre' purchase the cd anytime, it doesn't have to be before your trip. Just go to that link, (the one somewhere on the previous posts) let say you get back today from Disney world, just go to the link click on the pre purchase $99.00 dollar promo and follow the instructions. Then you will get an e mail confirmation of your purchase, meanwhile you can be editing your pictures, adding those cute borders and all that good stuff, you have 30 days from the day your enter your card numbers, then in a day or two they will send you another e-mail with your promo code and instructions it reads DO NOT DELETE on the subject, only use the promo code when you are ready to purchase your cd, after editing all of pictures and of course before they expire.
Make sense? :confused3
So if you get back from Disney and didn't get a lot of pictures on your cards, then you can only purcharse those pictures (prints) if you like, or whatever you want to do.
But no you don't have to buy it before your trip.

We have used Photopass twice and have enjoyed the results. On our Dec. trip we also did a resort shoot. When we returned home and I started adding borders to the pics I noticed some were missing. There is a link at their website that allows you to describe when, where, what you you were wearing, and any other helpful hints. The missing pics were all restored. As usual, Disney came through for us.
I am going solo next week and will only use Photopass for the free 5x7. When the family goes we will preorder the CD.

Yes, as soon as you get home, upload your pictures by entering the numbers on the back of you card or cards, you can view the pics and see if you want the cd.

Oh that happened to me this past trip, when I got home and entered the numbers, no pictures were found :scared1: i was freaking out, then i reported the pictures missing and within a couple of days my pictures were found.
Also we did the magic tinkerbell pictures, well tinkerbell was also MIA on our pictures, I reported that and disney e-mailed me back right away to let me know that they had added Tinkerbell to our pictures. :woohoo:

My fiancee is looking for a small camera bag to which you can attach a tripod. She only needs to hold a D40 + 18-200 lens (attached, hopefully) in the bag, and some assorted junk (pins, wallet). She would prefer a shoulder bag, but a small backpack would be okay, too.
I can't see to find anything with loops (or anything) that allow for tripods to attach.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

with what you are describing, it sounds to me like any bags in the size she wants would be too small to attach a tripod,
a backpack would definitely be larger
Lowepro Mini Trekker AW
has tripod straps.. for around $85
if you want a backpack for under 50 that also has wheels I can point you in that direction on ebay..
I have one of the rolling bags and it served me well until I outgrew it...
Crumpler 5 million dollar home is smallish and has tripod loops. (shoulder bag)
http://www.ebags.com/crumpler/the_5_million_dollar_home/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=108387&lastterm=crumpler%205%20million
$80-35% BCB = $52
If you want a black bag then you'd probably have to go to adorama. I don't know why ebags doesn't have it as an option...probably just sold out.
$80 - 11% BCB = $71
Even the 4 million dollar home has side loops that can be used for a small tripod.

My Crumpler $4M barely fits a Canon 30D with a 24-105 attached. If the 18-200 is no longer than that it should fit. If the tripod is not small and light, say 18" and 2 lb maximum it might be unwieldy and cause the bag to constantly shift forward or back, depending on where the tripod is attached.

Okay, we have it narrowed down between the Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home and the LowePro 70 AW. Any thoughts on either one? We are specifically concerned with:
1. Comfort - she is a smaller female, so a bag with a comfortable strap and good weight distribution is important.
2. Waterproof/Water Resistance - obviously not a quesiton for the Lowepro AW; what about the 4MDH? She has a partially-working Blackberry thanks to a poorly waterproofed North Face bag used on our last trip.
3. Size - it's tough to get an idea of how large the 70 AW is from the pictures. It doesn't look too large, but I'm concerned.
Thanks in advance for the help!

We've got the 5MDH (the older 1 fastener version), it's actually my wife's primary camera bag. The strap is wide & fairly comfy but doesn't come with a shoulder pad (Crumpler makes separate pads, but we just hijacked the shoulder pad from another bag we have). I can't see hanging a tripod from it though, (we've never tried it anyways), the way the bag sits I think the tripod would be bouncing off your legs. The bag is water resistant, we've never had it submerged or anything but it's done well keeping its contents dry in the rain.

You could always use another type of bag and attach the tripod with Velcro strips. You can buy the Velcro in larger strips at most fabric and craft places. Just a thought....

I have the Crumpler 5 mil (along with an assortment of other bags) and it is a very nice size and comfortable to carry all day. However, I can't imagine that it would be very comfortable to carry that bag around with a tripod attached. Unless you have a very small tripod or a gorilla pod, I'm not sure how you would attach a tripod so that you could comfortably walk around without whopping everyone around you everytime you move.
For reference, here is a photo of me with the 5 mil bag.
http://wendymitchell.smugmug.com/photos/231696210_FQuci-L.jpg
When carrying my tripod, I prefer a backpack style bag. I have a Kata backpack that allows you to attach the tripod and is quite comfy to carry. However, it can get heavy after a full day in the parks.

I have the Customary Barge from Crumpler and in rain, the water beads off of it. Not sure if the 4MDH is made from the same water resistant material, but I would imagine that it is.
Good luck!

Being 5'8 and having both the 5MDH and 6MDH, I can say that either the 4MDH or 5MDH would be perfect for her.The 6MDH home was way too bulky for me, but one thing I did like about it was the fact that it came with this extra cushioned slider for the strap whereas the others do not. Wearing a bag messenger style means probably dealing with one sore shoulder. What I find myself doing now is taking the cushion from the 6MDH and using it on the 5MDH. Works great!
If you are going with any of the Crumpler bags, I'd suggest getting a gel guitar strap cushion thing (yes, that's a technical term) for some extra added comfort.

But Ann, isn't your preferred method of carrying a tripod to hand it to DH? ;) I think that may be the answer for Sarah, a fiance is close enough to a DH for tripod carrying purposes. :)
I wear my $4M messenger style and it works well but it is also nice to take it off after a few hours of walking around. But I don't have a gel guitar strap cushion thingie... ;)

Why yes, Bob, yes it is. :thumbsup2 Tripod loop? Give me a break! My tripod loop is named Erik. However Sarah will be with Tom and Tom will be lugging his own crap around, so I'm guessing that using him as a sherpa isn't an option this time. :)
But I don't have a gel guitar strap cushion thingie... ;)
Now you're just being fresh!! I don't have a guitar strap cushion thingy either---yet. I do have the extra padding from my 6MDH and once I switched it to my 5MDH's strap, it made carrying it much much more comfy. For the wimpy 4MDH though, extra padding may not be necessary. ;) :cutie:

The $4MDH *is* pretty wimpy, even DW carries a $5MDH. It's because I like to run fast and light, yes, that's my story! ;)
Back to the original question, I have strapped a GorillaPod onto the handle of the $4MDH and it worked ok. I have also strapped the Gorilla onto the strap with some success. As long as the tripod is not too long or heavy this method may work ok.

For tripod carrying purposes? That's aiming a little low! When she gets tired of carrying her bag, I get to carry a second bag. Her tripod doesn't weigh enough for me carrying just that to make a big enough difference for her.
Our solution may actually be for me to carry both tripods and just have her carry a small bag. It depends on what tripod head I end up using. First I bought a Manfrotto 322RC2. While I really like that, it is very big and bulky, and I really am concerned about what it will hit if I carry it around attached to the Lowepro 100AW. So I bought a Manfrotto 486RC2 two days ago, too. I may just go with that and my old North Face bag (the one Sarah used last trip) which should enable me to carry around both tripods, too.
In any case, I need to order something soon (for her), as the trip is quickly approaching.
Any other comments as to the water-resistance of the _MDH series of bags?

Any other comments as to the water-resistance of the _MDH series of bags?
I don't know if they are technically waterproof, I know they are water resistant.
I have used mine out in the rain before (from a mist to a light drizzle) and everything inside has remained nice and dry. It's made out of a nylon-y material that doesn't just soak up the water like cotton would.
I wouldn't, however, walk around in pouring rain or take it somewhere like Kali River Rapids and expect it to say completely dry. For that, Bob has recommended a great dry-bag in the past that you can buy on camping websites like Campmor.com. I will try to find the exact name of it in case he doesn't chime in.

I am not completely exempt from pack mule duty either. At WDW my title changes from DH to "lens boy" as in "oh lens boy, hand me the 70-200". In true Princess Bride style my only answer is "as you wish". :) :lovestruc
That's part of the reason I like to buy lightweight equipment for DW, I carry it anyway! ;)
As for the Crumplers, I have had the $4MDH out in light rain with no problem. It does not appear to be designed to withstand a real downpour so I carry an ultralite back packing waterproof bag in it and can use that to cover the Crumpler when things get really bad. In that case I often have a heavy duty poncho to cover me *and* the camera gear too.

I was wondering if anyone has this or has come across something like this. I'm looking for a new camera bag that I could use for vacationing and hiking. (More so for vacation though) Basically I need something big enough for a digital SLR and an extra lens, plus a spot for a water bottle, some snacks, sunscreen and a few odds and ends. I'd prefer something lightweight, and it has to be waterproof enough for water rides and the occasional unexpected downpour. I can't seem to find anything in my price range (As cheap as possible) I found one I love but its way too much $$$. Any recommendations?

I found this one at Sams. It was around $40. It has a removable waterproof bag.
The top zip holds my camera, the 2nd one my additional lens (only one), P&S camera, extra batteries, and snacks (which I put in a Ziploc). There is a netted pouch on the side for a water bottle. It is a real lightweight backpack. I love it.

Just food for thought. There are some fancy water proof bags out there, but I like my Tamrac Expedition (http://www.amazon.com/Tamrac-5273-Expedition-Photo-Backpack/dp/B00004X0ZO/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1254406540&sr=1-8). What I do for water protection is carry a couple of the extra large ziplock bags, that you can get pretty much anywhere. The ziplock bag folds up neatly in the outside pouch of my camera bag and it's big enough to fit my camera bag, my wife's smaller camera bag and our phones and such.
Going with that option lets you pick a bag based purely what works for you and then you get cheap, replaceable water protection separate. It ain't sexy, but it's functional and it works.

The one posted by creativeamanda looks just like my Lowepro Slingshot. You may want to check out the Lowepro. I love it.
Here is the midsized one. There is a smaller one and a larger one:

I have a Kata 467 Rucksack. It has a padded compartment on the bottom that will hold a camera with lens plus an additonal lens or two. Also a large top compartment that will hold personal gear or additional equipment. As for water protection, included is a rain cover that fits over the outside of the pack. It is one of those internet rumors. I read about a test where someone used an industrial magnet made to lift cars and it did nothing to the data on a flash memory card. Any data loss reported by anyone was caused by something else and they were just blaming a magnet incorrectly. Flash memory is not as durable as people think. It is not going to last 50 years or anything.

I preordered the photopass CD and book for our May 2009 trip. We were there 10 days so we got about 280 photos. I don't think I'd buy this every trip but this was our first trip in 5 years and just the two of us celebrating out 25th annivesray so it was a very nice souvenir and rare opportunity to have us together in photos.
Most of the photographers did the standard pose "put your arms around each other and smile" and shot off 6-8 of the same shot. We did have a few that were creative and made effort to do some fun poses.
A couple of times, we tried to make the intiative to vary the shots, some photographers were willing to play, others were too hot and tired to bother.
Most of the photographers seemed willing to take a guest's point and shoot cameras and take a photo for them. I think I'd do that if we were going for a shorter trip. But overall, we were pleased that we got the package for our anniversary trip.

Hello all, I'm looking for that *ideal* magical camera bag. I don't know if it exists. I kinda like the Lowepro slingshot stuff, and maybe there's a model that can accomodate me...
I want something not too cumbersome, so I can go in the parks ( and any other travel destination easily ) with my canon rebel XTi and both its lenses. I would also like a "stuff" pouch that can fit a water bottle, and maybe a small sweater? and in a perfect world, it would have room for a laptop as well...
Am I asking too much?

I've got the Lowepro Slingshot100 and love it. This last time I squeezed my XT body, Tamron 18-250, Canon 75-300, Canon 18-55 and a Canon Nifty 50 all in the lower camera area. I was able to get our point and shoot Canon in the top with my wallet and keys. This was only to get through airport security so everything was in one place. For traveling arond lowepro makes a water bottle carrier that can be attached to the bag on the back or side or you can use it on a belt. It's also big enough to fit 2 rolled up poncho's when you have a chance for rain.

Another vote for the Slighshot and optional water bottle holder. I need to get another water bottle holder for my son so I dont have to carry his.
There are a number of slingshot models in various sizes. I'll probably go a bit larger when I replace this one, if just to have somewhere to put all the non camera stuff I tend to accumulate (maps, bandaids, tickets, etc.).

Another vote for Slingshots. I carried my 200 all day every day on three 9-10 day trips to WDW with 3-5 lenses in it and never felt encumbered. For me, it is the perfect bag (except that I've had to re-stitch the zipper twice now)

I've said it before here, but the magic bag I want is Hermione's little evening bag from the final Harry Potter book that allowed her to carry half of Hogwart's all over England. :thumbsup2
But . . . back to the real world . . . I personally don't care for the Slingshot. I'm rather petite, and I found that the only way that I could carry it comfortably (i.e., without hurting my back) was to tighten it enough that I could no longer swing it around to get into it, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the sling bag. I prefer backpacks and am currently using one of the Kata digital rucksacks.

Can you give a link to the sling shot.
I have a
Canon bakc pack. I love it for hauling all my gear and keeping it safe...but to take it to the parks, no way. It's too bulky and big, and I usually only take one or two lens to the parks. I want something I can keep my camera in safely and put a few extra in, instead of carrying a purse.

Just got back from WDW, carried my Slingshot 100 the entire trip. Worked great! I was carrying my D40 and 18-55 lens in the main section, and my Panasonic video camera in the upper section. After day 1, I was also carrying my brand new 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX lens that my wife got me for our anniversary!
I also carried a small monopod that I slipped into the loop on the side.
Thanks. From looking at them they look about the size of my back pack, so probably bigger than I want.
I'd check the dimensions, I'm betting the 100 is significantly smaller than your Canon pack.

The Lowe Slingback 200 is larger than I like to carry around but it holds an enormous amount of stuff. When I traveled in August I had my Canon XSi with both lenses listed below plus my Canon G5, extra batteries for both, my wallet, tons of extra memory cards (2 types) for the cameras, snack bars, small water bottle, and camera cleaning stuff.
And don't forget that this bag has a great self-contained rain-cover in the bottom compartment.
I also carried this bag around the front of my body sometimes!

One of my tricks for a magic camera bag is to not put the camera in the bag! The camera goes in the bag only for travel between home and hotel, after that the camera is out and the bag is used for lenses, water bottle, poncho, jacket, etc.

Just throwing this out there, not that it applies to you. The Slingshot is not designed for a woman and I hate the design. I have a 200 and 300 collecting dust. They are horrible for anyone with a chest (read between the lines)
When I order bags, I look for sales at ebags. I like them becuase they offer free returns. It's hard to shop for a bag without hauling all your stuff to a store. With them, I order the bag. Fill it and walk around my house and yard to see if it'll work. Then decide to keep or return.
Currently I am a ThinkTank and Kata fan. Hoping to get a deal at PDN this week.

Well, I am a woman, I have a slingshot 100 and I like it. I'm also not exactly flat chested either. ;)
I think, as with many bags it's just a preference of what's comfortable for different people and I'd recommend trying the slingshot to a man or woman. It has several features that are very nice in a bag - it's easy to access the camera, it has a rain cover built in and it has a compartment for carrying extra stuff as well as an outside zippered pocket.

I got out to Best Buy today and looked at the bags they had. Not many to chose from, but gave me an idea. I'm pretty sure I don't like the lowpro 100 slingback. I agree about the chest. It just didn't sit right. I also like to have a long strap and wear it kind of like a baggalini. I have found a few I like the looks of on Amazon, but without being able to "try them on", it's hard to know if I will be happy or not. I thought I would love the back pack. But for me it's much to heavy to carry around, but a wonderful spot to store my stuff and ta lug it ALL to one location, but once at that location, if I just want one or two lenses I switch down to a smaller bag. Maybe I'll take a look at ebags.

I have the Lowepro Slingshot 200. It's just ok. Not really that comfy for me and very boxey. I recently bought the Tamrac Velocity 8. I like it. It sits like a sling bag, but does not stick out as awkwardly. They have several sizes depending on how much equipment you want to haul around. I bought mine on the Adorama site when it was half price.

Being of the female variety, I'm in the don't like slings camp. I'm pretty average in height and build and the sling straps just don't sit right across my chest. I have a Kata 3N1 that can be worn as a sling or backpack (similar to the fastpack series, I believe). The nice thing about the Kata is that you can configure the straps so the bag "slings" over your right or left shoulder. However, I prefer to wear the bag as a backpack. By dropping one of the straps, the back can still be slung around to the front to access your gear from a side panel. There is a side panel on both sides, so you can configure the bag to be accessed from whichever side you prefer.
I use the backpack when I am carrying my larger lenses. When I travel light, I prefer a messenger bag. The Crumpler $5mil is my bag of choice for a messenger bag.

I have the Lowepro 2 AW which is very similar to the 170. I have been pretty happy with it as it holds plenty of gear and is comfortable enough to have on all day (I shoot a few events for the town I live in and wind up with the bag on my shoulder for the better part of 12 hours on those days). My biggest complaint with it is that the D rings and snaps for the strap are all plastic. They have held up just fine but do have a tendency to squeak a little when I walk with the bag on. Nothing major but it can grind on a long hike.

My set up right now for home/work is a Canon backpack inside my Timberland rolling backpack. I hate having to unzip two things, but I can't find a rolling that I like yet.
I carry a canon 50d, rebel xti, 70-200 2.8, 580ex speedlite, 28-75mm, 50mm, a tripod, all kinds of extra batteries and knickknacks and whathaveyous. I have a hard time carrying it on my back.
I'm going to check out this Kata Trolley. I know that Jill E makes a rolling, but it doesn't get the best reviews.
I won't be taking that to the park, though. I will probably take it as my carryon, but I bought this a few weeks ago. I'm not enjoying it at all so far, so I may send it back. The zippers stick. It's annoying.

I was really really excited about this when I read about it earlier this morning. As good as Lightroom 2 is, there's plenty of room for improvement. I saw some of the initial reviews of LR3 Beta, and it looks pretty promising. Can't wait for the final version to be released! :)
If you've never tried Lightroom, now's your chance to try version 3 for FREE for several months during this Beta testing period! Otherwise, you'd only get a 30-day trial for the current version of Lightroom.
My workflow tends to involve exporting from lightroom as TIF, running the pictures through an external noise-reducing program which saves them as TIF to another folder.
Finally I batch process all this second group of TIFs to JPG, resizing them and sharpening them, in a script that runs in Paint Shop Pro.
Given that one of the new features of Lightroom 3 is a significant improvement in noise reduction technology, I have high hopes that it might significantly improve my workflow!

I bought the 30. I went to the Photo Plus Expo in NYC yesterday and looked at a ton of bags. I really liked all the features of Kata, and I found out it was designed by a woman. So that may explain why it fits better (it takes into account the chest factor). Anyway, I bought it but may cancel the order. B&H didn't apply the show discount on the bag or the ballhead I bought. So I need to call them tomorrow and either get a partial refund or cancel the order. I can get the 30 for $98 plus free shipping at numerous places online $30 less then B&H.

I agree. I recently picked up the 5 MDH, based on info I saw here. Not a cheap bag, but outstanding quality and some really nifty features. I find the over the shoulder satchel setup more comfortable compared to a backpack, which was what drew me to the X MDH bags.

They also have a 200 and 300 if you need more room. The 100 easily carries the DSLR with lens, plus another couple of lenses or another lens and a flash. It has a compartment at the top for other stuff. I carry a small monopod stuck through the loop on the side.
The all-weather cover came in quite handy when it rained on us at the start of MNSSHP on our last trip.
I agree with ukcatfan on the water bottle, I would never put one inside my camera bag.

I found it at Target or Walmart for under a dollar. I picked up a few of them just to have handy.

As for a bag just head out to the stores and see what you like. I like most am always looking for "the" bag. Right now I have 2 bags.
Right now my primary bag is a Lowepro SlingShot 100 (http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-SlingShot-All-Weather-Digital-Backpack/dp/B000BAX50G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1256738627&sr=1-1-spell) knock off I found at Sam's Club on the clearance rack. It holds my camera, 3 lenses, accessories, small umbrella. I use the top for my daughter's snacks and wipes. It also has a rain hood.

Then my first bag, which I still use if I am going out with just one lens.

i've had this one for a number of yrs
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Deluxe-Backpack-200EG-Cameras/dp/B00009R6TA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257251989&sr=8-1
it still looks like new,. i don't use it much now except to keep all my stuff together in as i don't care for backpacks but you can't beat it for the price. it is a kind of olive green and black. holds a camera body and probably 4-5 lenses as well as a bunch of accessories if you want to stuff it full but then it is heavy. it does have a small canon insignia on it but you probably could remove it and it would just look like any other non camera backpack

I'm a Kata 3n1 fan (http://www.kata-bags.com/productFRM2HS.asp?p_Id=433&Version=Photo). I just got the 30 (large) it was $100 (with a discount). It's pretty roomy inside, I could have gotten away with the 20 (medium), which sounds more like the size you are looking for. It is a very well designed and comfortable bag. It is not a traditional backpack, the 3n1 line is a combo bag that can be worn as a backpack, left sling or right sling. I looked at hundreds of bags before deciding on this bag.

Depends on how big your camera is and how big your lens' are.
I got this for my trip to the smokies couple weeks back:

In the main camera area it could fit my 40D body WITH the 70-200 f4 L lens attached to it.
It also has a free space for food and other items.

I use a Lowepro Micro Trekker 200 Backpack for my gear. It holds a Canon 40d,70-200 2.8IS, 16-35,24-70 all L lens plus a 420flash. An if I am very creative I can even sneak in my old 10D body. There is also a back pocket for the other necessities of life. It is not the most comfortable back pack for hiking but is small enough that I have never had a problem getting it into the ride cars around Disney.

I have the Kata dr-467 and really like it. It holds my Nikon D300, 17-55mm, 70-300mm, 35mm, 50mm and 10.5mm with room up top for the small things and extras you need to carry like rocket blower, filters, memory cards, and a few personal items. Its comfortable on the back and shoulders to carry when fully loaded and also fits under the seat on all the planes I have been on. Its also under $100 at about $80 from amazon.com. The 467 has the laptop sleeve in the back. If you dont need to carry a laptop there is also the dr-465 which is very similar to the 467 without the laptop compartment.

I've asked this question before and consequently done some research. I think LowePro is a great looking brand. I would go with the slingshot 100. If you want more space for "extra" stuff, go for the FastPack. It's about the same, but not "sling" style, more "backpack" ( with two straps ) but more room for "stuff".
There's also Naneu Military Ops Alpha-L that also accomodates a tripod!

I believe this same bag is advertised at $60.00 at B&H Photo in their catalog that just came out. I looked online and didn't notice the instant $20.00 off, but I did notice a 25.00 gift card included, it's really a better deal.

I use a Lowepro Flipside 300 in the parks. It can carry my 7D with a 70-200mm f/4, 17-85m, 50mm, and a 580 EXII flash. The bag is also small enough that I have never had any problems getting it on any of the rides and because of the way it is designed the zipper to open the bag is on your back so you have to swing the bag around in front of you with the waistbelt to open it. I like the security this provides since I don't have to worry about anyone trying to get into my stuff while I'm traveling. The 300 sells for $99. If you don't need quite as much space a friend has the Flipside 200 which goes for $79 and is a bit smaller as it will still fit the lenses just not the flash.

I also have the lowepro micro trekker 200.
I bought my bag this summer with the plan that I could use it daily
(since I take my camera everywhere) and would be a good
size to take to Disney. It holds my canon XT body, canon 75-300mm,
Sigma 17-70mm, and my canon 28-80mm along with other small accessories
and I still have room. It is very comfortable to wear. I often carry it slung
over one shoulder and it stays in place well. They also have other sizes and styles. I like it because it was smaller in size compared to their others.
They also make a 100 that is slightly smaller than the 200.
I dig my Lowepro Computrekker AW. It fits both of my D200s, 70-200mm, 35mm, and 28-70mm. Plus, it holds my 15" MBP.

Hello! I'm new here and I must say I'm apart of a different message board but all of these smiles beat ours.
I was curious if anyone has worked as a Photopass Photographer at Disney World?
I recently graduated from a photography school and my friend and I are looking to become roommates again and get a job around the same area. Of course with the economy the way it is that's easier said that done so we're both debating about becoming Photopass Photographers to get our foot in the door somewhere.
I was wondering if anyone who has worked there could give me an inside look as to what your day looks like? Like how long shifts are, how often do you get a break, do you stay in one spot or continuously walk around?
If anyone has any info I'd greatly appreciate it. :upsidedow

From what I understand, it is an unskilled and low paying job. It is also typically a part time job I believe. Basically, you do not have to know anything about photography to get the job. You have a quick crash course, the management sets the camera, and tells you to go shoot. If you really want to get your foot in the door, look into their special event photography jobs.

I've always wondered about PhotoPass Photographers. The PhotoPass Photos I get are generally good, but some of them made us out-of-focus. I was surprised because their cameras are usually stationary on a tripod, so you'd think that they'd be able to take the exact same focused picture over and over and over again during their shift. You'd think that as a photographer, that'd be the #1 thing to ensure before clicking the shutter.
The other thing about PhotoPass photos is that sometimes their colors are off, probably a white balance problem. My wife and I usually visit at night, so I'm sure it's pretty tricky trying to balance the white balance for flash and the ambient exposure. We end up looking blue. They probably could have gelled their flash, but I'm sure gels aren't standard issue for PhotoPass photographers. Of course, I'm only seeing the unprocessed original. A professionally done photo would have attempted to correct this in post-processing.
For someone who's graduated from photography school, sounds like being a PhotoPass Photographer would be pretty unrewarding. I wonder if you could do something with their Disney's Wedding Pavilion as a wedding photographer. I'm sure there's other photography stuff you could do at Disney, given your background & training.
Good luck! :)

This may sound bleak, but I don't think PhotoPass is a way to get your foot in the door. It's likely an end in itself, not the means to a greater end. I'd consider working elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I know it's not a job where someone is going to look at my resume and be like "wow you worked there?! Sure I'll hire you!" It's more of a job to get my foot in the door anywhere. Since I have no photography jobs under my experience, just skills, schooling, awards, and non-photography related jobs, no one will contact me for an interview. You'd think having a prestigious school under your resume would have helped seal the deal but in fact it doesn't. I'm stuck in the phase where people want experience but no one will hire you to give you experience unless if you're rich enough to intern.
After 5+ months of unemployment I'm not being very picky with jobs anymore. I gave up not applying for jobs because they didn't sound fun or rewarding a few months ago. It just needs to be photography related and pay enough. I know their pay isn't great but with living with my friend again rent and all the costs will be cut in half. We're just trying to find something to get us living in the same area near the same time because right now we're thousands of miles apart. We're just looking for a job to get us there and then who knows what we'll find someday.
I also know it's an unskilled position. A lot of those types are. I had tried applying for places like Portrait Innovations and Olan Mills to get me started. I had an interview for one and it went super well. I was told I had talent then by email I was shot down because I'm not a pushy sales person. Kind of a pansy move if you ask me, they could have just told me to my face or looked at my resume for sales jobs and not bothered to have me drive 14 hours to the interview, but what can ya do? :confused3 They even told one of my friends that even though they say they're looking for photographers they're not, they want sales people. :headache:
Anyway, thanks for the replies. My friend and I are going to start seriously debating stuff and figuring out what to do. No worries though, I may be young but I'm not stupid to move to a new state without a way to support me. One friend tried to convince me to just move to where I really want to go and take a job at Walmart after graduation without ANY planning! She did what she tried to convince me to do, except she works at a different retail store and now regrets that decision. :sad2: I have things planned out it's just getting a job that's holding me back. I hope I don't sound like I have a big ego or anything... but honestly you've got to plan before taking a big move. Just because your young and can doesn't mean you should. :)
Disneyboy2003, Some people seem to have a real issue with focus. I had a friend at school who took out of focus photos ALL the time. She thought she had it and she'd be rushing. She'd also joke around saying that she likes how technical I am just because I'd white balance before a shoot. It's common sense.
As for photos coming out blue it sounds like they haven't white balanced the camera. They should do it before starting the day then again at night because obviously the lighting has changed. That's why people look like smurfs. I had someone come out purple once because I forgot to do it before snapping that first shot. Purples not a healthy look.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Jobs sure are hard to come by, especially in this economy.
During the past 5+ months that you were unemployed, could you have gotten an unpaid internship? Or could you have gone to a local wedding photographer or local newspaper and offered to be a photographer's assistant for free, just for the real-world experience? Those free / unpaid / volunteer jobs might end up turning into paid jobs later on, once they see how valuable and hard-working you are.
Or, if Olan Mills was looking for someone with sales experience, could you start asking your local camera shop for any openings? Or ask Olan Mills for feedback on where you can go for sales experience.
Sometimes, in this economy, you have to be creative and make some sacrifices just to get your "foot in the door".

I wish I could have! Where I live it's in the middle of nowhere. Think boonies where a simple store like Walmart is 2 hours away. No malls, no clothing stores, just a couple grocery stores and what seems like a bajillion auto part stores for some oddball reason.
We only have one photographer somewhere around here for about half the state. I wish I was joking when I say that. I know, sounds like the perfect place to set up a studio because there's no competition. I often wondered if I some how had enough for all the equipment what it'd be like to set up a studio here. Then I remembered this part of the state has the highest unemployment rate. There'd be no way to keep a studio afloat. This photographer is able to because he does all those school photos.
I wish I could have seen into the future because I would have hunted down that photographer earlier to see about an internship. For quite a while I was applying for a lot of jobs non-stop. I didn't bother seeing about an internship then because I figured at least one of them would have worked out. I didn't want to start an internship and then quit the next week to get ready to move. I'd feel bad. I only have one other job that I'm applying for. It's to be an assistant of a well-known photographer. If that doesn't work out then I'm going to see about an internship.
At this point I'd take a crap photo job because I'd still do my own stuff on the side to keep me sane. :upsidedow

I thought maybe you were already living in the Orlando area. I would NOT recommend moving there with hopes to make it. It has been horribly hit by the economy and the cost of living is still high. Two people working full time as something like a photopass photographer probably couldn't afford to live there. I am familiar with the area and have friends there, so do know what I am talking about.
Let me give you a little more info about living there. The only place you could possibly afford is going to be 45-60 minutes commute. There are often accidents that slow that even more. If you are late to your job at WDW even a few times, you are fired with no questions asked. Therefore, many typically try to show up very early for their jobs and just wait. It is not exactly a great way to make a living.
To top it all off, they are not going to hire someone out of the area for an hourly labor position like that anyway. To get a job there, you will already need to be living there and basically show up at Casting every day until you get an interview and hope for the best. They really only consider out of the area candidates for tough to fill highly educated positions such as engineers, lawyers, analysts, etc. (Basically behind the scenes stuff) Sorry to sound so gloomy, but I would not want to see someone already struggling make a decision that hurts them.

Guess I'm crazy or something because I seriously was shocked at how cheap the cost of living there is versus Vermont. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the difference. It's very expensive here because of heating for what seems like half a year of winter. I'm so tired of winter.
Well I guess I'm back to square one then because me being out of state is another huge reason why I haven't gotten any interviews. I was already turned down twice over the phone because I had to travel even though I was willing at the drop of a hat. Everyone wants someone who lives 5 minutes down the road instead of someone that's showing dedication willing to move thousands of miles and wouldn't take more than a couple weeks.
I'm sort of convinced that this economy will be doomed forever. :sad2: I know a job will come someday, but that someday feels forever away.

Vermont is VERY expensive to live.. :( Not interested in moving but.. Housing is higher than a lot of friends I know out of state..
Want sticker shock. I was in Texas for business.. and went by a new development.. the houses were starting at half of my house, and was much bigger..
Love Vermont though.. Off topic.. but wanted to comment..
I too was wondering about the life of a photopass photographer.. not to bash them in general, but I must say their interest and skill ranges all over the place.. We had a couple great ones on our trip last month, but most were.. less then excited to be there..

You could try monster.com or the Disney website to find other information regarding the job.

I'm thinking of getting a smaller back pack to take on out trip to WDW. I already have the Canon gadget bag that came with my camera, but that won't do. I don't want to lug it around. Then I got a really great Lowepro backpack, I think it's the FastPack 250 to hold my camera gear and lap top. It's great for a carry on when flying. But it's really big, and long, and I'm afraid I'll be too hot with it around the World and it'll be too cumbersome to take on rides. So I'm thinking about the Lowepro Micro Trekker. It is small, but it will fit the gear I currently have. So is 3 different bags too many? Just wanted to get the pros' opinions before DH says "REALLY! Another bag?"

I have the same problem. I typically carry my Northface backpack with my Crumpler camera bag inside of it when I travel. That gets a bit unweildy though since the only real reason I carry the backpack is for the laptop and a book or two.
My wife and I are going to Asia in August for two weeks and I want a bag that I can carry my laptop, camera, books, etc. in. I am hoping to get this National Geographic bag for Christmas. I think it will be good since it doesn't look too big and can hold my MacBook, camera, lens, books.

cbombard - Vermont is horribly expensive. That's why when I look around at other states rent ranges my jaw hits the floor. It's a good place to visit but definitely not live unless if you're financially set and ready to travel two hours to get to stores that other people have 5 of miles from each other.
Texas is also nice! I wouldn't mind going back there since that's where I originally came from. Only thing is, I'm not terribly fond of tornados. :rolleyes1
Dan - thanks! I'll keep it in mind. Everything is up in the air right now.
manning - what interviews? Out of all these months I've only been able to land one. A lot haven't given me a chance because I'm out of state. The one I got was for a portraiture job. I brought my portrait portfolio that shows kids, adults and pets in studio, outside and on location and photos that were from serious to goofy to unique. It's well put together and in a nice book. No three ring binder amateur portfolios for me.

I bring 3 bags with me to Disney whenever I go. My main backpack, the Kata R102 holds everything I've got - two bodies, 5 lenses, flash, filters, chargers, cables, remotes, etc. Then, I've got a Tenba shoulder bag that can fit 1 camera with lens attached and two additional lenses...it's the main walkaround bag for big photo days. The third bag is a small Tamrac video bag - it just holds my camera with lens attached and room for an extra battery or memory cards. I often bring this empty so I have a place to stash my camera in a sudden rainstorm, or on occasion may bring one small prime lens along in the bag (if it were to rain, I can just squeeze the camera/lens and the extra prime in the same bag, but it's a bulging fit only for emergencies). For travel, all my camera gear goes in the Kata, and the Tenba dividers are removed inside so it can be flattened and stuck in my luggage, with the Tamrac soft bag inside.

You might need to change your job search if you want to move to Florida, or any other state. Maybe just start by trying to get a job that will help you settle into the area you want to live in. Then start to look for a photography job at local studios or whatever type of photography you want to do. Also try and think outside the "job interview process" be creative, employers get hundreds of resumes for one job opening. make yours stand out.
Also do NOT think having a good college on your resume is a plus in todays job market / economy. I have friends who manage local retail stores and they have people who are applying that have a phd for cashier position! You are fighting for a job in a very limited job market openings right now, whith people who have real world experinece on thier resume, who will work for much lower pay then they would have in the past.
Also keep in mind that at Olan Mills and those entry level studios, they will have you photograph and/ or sell to customers, so the abillty to upsell is key to them. They make money from selling, not the picture taking process. Use the interview as a way to show that you can sell, after all you are selling yourself. Go to the library and checkout a sales book, to learn some ways of how to close and bring those techniques into the interview. Some examples are Zig Zigler, Tom Hopkins.
Please do not take this as a negative againest you, just a way to help achieve your end result. I hope you find a job you love in a area you love.

I've never found a bag that is perfect for all occasions, so I have lots of different bags for different purposes.
1) Lowepro F&S system - A belt/vest system with pods for lenses. This is great when I'm not carrying too much gear and I want quick access to all my stuff.
2) Lowepro Minitrecker - A nice backpack for carrying a small to medium amount of gear.
3) Gura Gear Kiboko - A large, backpack style bag that is great for carrying a lot of gear. It my favorite backpack style bag for use out in the field because the ergonomics are much better than my Lowepro's.
4) Lowepro Dryzone 200 - Medium sized waterproof backpack. It's a pain to use, but I like having a waterproof backpack for some canoeing situations.
5) Pelican cases - Not really backpacks, but another way to carry my gear. I pretty much just use them for beach outings these days. Extremely durable and very well sealed.
I also have a shoulder bag that I use more for video that photography. A shoulder bag is great on location, but it's not good for carrying gear all day. I occasionally use it for photography when I'm going to set up in one place and shoot there all day (like a wedding or event shoot).
I once had a fanny pack that was great for an SLR and a few lenses. I could swing it around for easy access. If you don't have lots of lenses or large lenses and you don't mind the rather ridiculous look, I think a fanny pack is a great way to carry gear.
I think that the ideal way to carry gear is a backpack because it handles the weight best. The problem is gear access. The best way to handle that is to have your assistant (often referred to as spouse) wear the backpack so that you can access it.

Like Mark, I have trouble finding a bag that works for all occasions. I may carry only the SLR or I may carry that plus 2 more lenses, a water bottle, and a light jacket. A modular bag works best for me, Crumpler's $x Million Dollar Homes. These have loops that can be used to attach various holders and items that are held on with Velcro.
I usually carry a $4MDH and attach things as required. I may look like a walking junkyard but it works for a full 16 hour day of walking around and taking photos.

So far I only have one bag! Amazing for me!
I have the Kata
http://www.amazon.com/Kata-KT-DR-467-Digital-Rucksack/dp/B000VW6KXS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258243210&sr=8-2
I can't say enough good things about it! I find it just perfect. Comfortable to carry, has room for my extras like keys, lip gloss, etc...up top and room for my Canon 40D plus an additional flash and lens in the bottom.
It is very comfortable and has added padding on the lower back area.
I just haven't found the need for another bag, although I have thought of getting a small bag for carrying around town, but that would require me to carry a purse in addition, so it hardly seems worth it. I am still debating.

:rotfl::lmao: I'll try that on this Disney trip and see how well it goes over. I have already been given my strick warning that we are not stopping every 2 seconds for me to take pictures. Well then what was the point of me getting a DSLR? :confused3 I need to take a trip by myself. We should plan a DIS photo meet at WDW! That would go over real well with the kids!

Dave pirate:
I'm just going to try to internship with the only photographer around here. I don't want to risk moving to a new state doing a non-photography related job then finding out there is none there anywhere and have to pack up and move again. After moving around 14 times for college I'd like to stay put a littler longer for once. Also my friend tried to convince me to pack up and do a blind move. I obviously didn't. She did and moved to this forgotten state and now regrets it. She didn't believe me when I said there's hardly any photographers or any studios here. Oooh well!
It's been nearly 5 months, I know that having a good college on your resume isn't going to open up every door. I only thought it would have helped get me at least a couple interviews for the 100+ jobs I've applied for all over. :worried:
With Olan Mills and Portrait Innovation, after I saw how they actually act I refuse to work for any of those chain studios. They're going to eventually go under because they don't focus on photography. It's to see how much they can pressure people to buy sadly when in reality if you hire someone who takes good photos the photos sell themselves. People will have a harder time just picking a couple and if they've got the money they'll buy more.
Also when I was applying for those jobs non-stop I always wondered why they'd get filled then a couple weeks later the same ones would be open again. I figured people were transferring within the job... wrong. I found some inside info and it turns out they have an insanely high turn around rate because they can everyone. I found out from one person that worked there the manager was conducting interviews at the studio to take the place of the people who were still working. I'm so very glad I never got that job. I'd hate to move all that way then be canned for something stupid like not meeting the $100 sales goal even though they run packages constantly for $10. That never made sense. A lot of people only come in to spend the $10 because that's all they have. My friend works part-time for one of those studios and she's told me about how hard it is to make the sales goal when the company does those packages. It's setting up the employees for failure. :sad2:
I'll eventually find something. It's just the waiting and not knowing where I'll be living that's the hard part. It'd be amazing to be able to see into the future. I'd like to know where I'd be living.

Hmm...I know that Olan Mills has been around for decades, and for the general public, that's probably the first name folks think of if they wanted to go to get their portraits done. That's probably the biggest advantage of being a chain store vs an independent photographer. Just like Zales vs. a local jeweler. The chain stores do a great job marketing to the general public to create their name brand. And if you knew nothing about jewelry (or nothing about photography), the first place you'd probably go to is a name-brand chain store.
I'm not in the photography business, but I have heard that successful photographers spend more than half their time (75-90% of time?) on advertising and their business. If you're trying to make money from photography (or any other skill), it's really more than just about the pictures. You can have the most stunning photos in the world, but without any advertisement, business sense, or customer service, your photos will just hang right there on the wall.
That internship with your local photographer is a great idea. Hopefully, you'll be able to learn how a successful photography business is run. To bring in more money for your photography, you've got to have ideas on how to make more sales. Potential customers are always attracted to FREE stuff and are always drawn to discounts or deals. Remember, everyone wants a deal!
For example, ask a couple to do an engagement session with you, and if they like your photos, offer them a discount on their wedding package. Or, pass out business cards with a 10% discount off your next portrait. Or, give someone a referral bonus if they refer their friends / family to you.
Customers always come into the store expecting to spend only $ amount for photos. However, with personalized customer service and good presentation of your final products (ex. photo books, enlargements, etc), customers (or their friends/family) might be drawn into spending $$$.
You see examples of this all the time in every other sales-oriented industry. You go in thinking you're just gonna buy a car, but end up buying a car + a whole package of stuff. You walk in wanting to buy a DSLR, and end up with a DSLR + a 10-year "warranty" + camera bag + overpriced filters, etc.
You went to school to hone your photography skills. Now that you're in the "real world", you've got to learn about the business aspects of photography. :)

Oh, we definitely went over the business aspect in photography school. It may have been a 10 month intensive program where we were in classes from 8-5 then after school until 1am working on assignments, but we learned two years worth. We did everything from record keeping to how to run your business and from doing portraits all the way to aerial. Aerial in a 4 seater plane is definitely not my idea of fun though. :scared:
It's just right now I'm not ready for my own studio. It hasn't been an interest yet and mainly because you need to be able to support yourself for about 5 years before you start seeing any real profit. Also the fact that I have no clue where I want to live yet doesn't help, but that'll be figured out someday by traveling.
Right now I'll just have to see if the photographer does internships because I can tell I'm not going anywhere for a long time. I also really don't want to advertise myself because I don't have a business license. I'm okay with doing requests because so far its only been family but I'm not open for business. I'd rather not get fined.

You know, the economy is just a tough for those needing photograpy services as it is for you. Do you have a portfolio? What you need are a few customers and some referrals. Maybe you can find someone getting married who will let you photograph it for next to nothing. They get your service, and you get a referral and something for your portfolio.
I sew for others, and had to do many jobs for next to nothing before I could ever charge what my time was worth......

Couple of quick thoughts:
I appreciate those in the know with the strong reasons not to move to Orlando in hopes of a WDW job, and the comments about Photopass photographers not needing photo skills to get the job. I just want to say that over the years we have definitely had some incredibly skilled Photopass photographers who were clearly trained professionals -- you can tell right away by the way the person is doing their metering and set up if they know what they are doing, and we have some incredibly amazing photographs that have been taken by these folks (GREAT candids, for example, rather than the stiff smile-and-wave shots).
In terms of getting experience and exposure, though, you might want to consider connecting with small elementary schools in your area -- www.aisne.org is a great source for finding private independent schools. School are always in need of great photos -- for their web sites, for their promotional materials (ads and brochures), etc. If you can offer your services for free in exchange for being credited as the photographer, you can get both exposure and portfolio materials to show.

Keep in mind: the internship could possible turn into a paying job as well.
I just had this happen to me. I interned with a local photographer all summer, worked my butt off and at the end of September she offered me a one day a week paid internship. So now I'm there twice a week: once as an unpaid intern and once as a paid intern. It's probably been one of the best things I've done, the experience in seeing how a small business runs as well as the photography related experience has been awesome.
I really have no other advice for you since I'm not even in college yet (117 days till I graduate high school then off to art school), but I wish you luck! =)

They have met as part of Mousefest for the previous 3 years, so when Mousefest canceled, they forged ahead with their own meet. Quite a few DISers are also on those boards - it's just an extension of the Disney love specifically tuned to photography. Sounds like there will be a nice group up there this time.

i'm thinking of going the small bag route from now on if i can figure out which of these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/113795-REG/Zing_Designs_520_205_Large_Zoom_SLR_Reversible.htm l#features will fit my 40d and 70-200 lens. right now i have a little cheap discount drugstore rip off camera bag that is ugly but fits all my lenses and is so light weight it is ridiculously comfortable to carry.... problem being my camera won't fit in it with the lenses cause it's kind of narrow. soooo this would protect the body from sudden downpours since when i'm out with my camera i never put it away anyway. i have 2 other bags for full gear storage and transport or "iffy", ie beach situations but i want "light and simple" for shooting

UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE!! There hasn't been a single time within the last two days where the PhotoPass sight hasn't locked up on me and I've visited several times a day even!! WHAT GIVES!? Either I get the Mickey clock thingy that never goes away, the edits error out when I try to save, or I can't get the borders show up in the option window. Then they have the nerve to charge for time extensions! Are you kidding me!?
I have been on all sorts of other online photo processing sights and this has got to be the highest priced and least efficient. They can't use the excuse of high volume, because this is just folks going to Disney parks vs. every other photographical moment on any other sight. I'm am not feeling the Disney magic today folks:sad2:

I am a night owl, so I'll give that a shot:thumbsup2 I still have enough time- I hope! We just got home, but we spent a little time in with my parents in Ft. Lauderdale after leaving Disney, so I'm feeling like I lost a few days there that I could probably should have used since this seems to move at a snails pace...bummer!! We pre-paid for a book and a cd, so I'd love to get the best use of both.
I just can't believe they have the nerve to charge for time extensions when the site locks up so much... If they are truly deleting pictures after 30 days, shouldn't the site run a little better?
The borders also are annoying, because when I was on the pictures of Princess Aurora, her border wasn't available...but when I'm on castle pictures- there it is! Same thing with the Princess and the Frog, I KNOW I saw the borders flipping through unrelated pictures, but do you think they show up once I'm on those pictures? NO! And the Fairy borders show up for everything and I have no use for them since I refused to wait in an hour long line for those photo ops :upsidedow Why don't they just make ALL the borders available for all photos? How hard can that be folks!?
Anyone know any tricks around getting the borders I want to show up?

They could not prohibit pushing something outright, otherwise no one would be able to put their child in a stroller.

When I drop a chunk of change for some software, I like to get my money's worth and use as many features as I can. But after using Lightroom for almost two years, I still haven't jumped on the Web module bandwagon.
So I am wondering, am I really missing anything?
Does anyone here use it? Do you like it? From a technical aspect, what do you need to get it on line? Does anyone have any personal samples they'd like to share? I've seen a couple pro photo sites using it, bit not many "family users", any reason why?
Any thoughts?
MarkBarbieri
12-03-2009, 11:57 AM
I don't use it because I find it so much easier to use a photo hosting site like Smugmug rather than maintaining my own with Lightroom. With Smugmug, I get things like the ability to order prints, usage statistics, and a whole lot more functionality.
The only reason I would consider Lightroom for web development is if I wanted a site to put on a CD/DVD to mail to someone that needed to use it disconnected or with sever bandwidth restrictions. For example, I could see setting up a few viewing stations at a wedding, funeral, bar mitzvah, or some similar event that was held in a venue without Internet access.
As for me personally, I pretty much stick with the Library and Develop modules. I do almost all of my printing out of Photoshop (for softproofing). I do my slideshows with Pictures2Exe and Pro Show Gold. I do my web hosting with Smugmug.

Library and Develop are the only two modules I use too. I did purchase a book with DVD tutorials called Classroom in a Book for Lightroom2 and it was very helpful in alot of areas but I have to admit the PRINT and WEB module sections of the book I pretty much just skimmed over because I'm not sure its something I will ever use. Hosting and printing I do mostly from Smugmug also.

I've been watching this bag for some time and finally found it marked down. The regular price is $300-ish and I just got it for $199.00. It's a beast of a bag and looks really good for traveling with all the gear...it even holds a 17-inch laptop. I wouldn't carry it around a theme park or anything ;) but it will hold a lot. I'm planning that it will hold:
Nikon D300
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8
11-16mm f/2.8
50mm f/1.8
SB800 Flash
Assorted Batteries & Memory
Laptop

What does everyone do for a camera bag?
DW bought me one for Christmas(naneu pro c-300). It is nice int he sense that it is big enough to hold my camera, extra lens, video camera, chargers, etc and has room to grow.
It is a side carrier, and I was looking more at the backpacks. Thinking a side carrier (larger one) will be too big to carry in the parks or out shooting. PLus I don't need to carry EVERYTHING when I go shooting.
Do people have 2 bags? One for storage and one for taking out shooting, or should I look to just replace this bag rather than adding a second bag?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I own and use multiple bags. My primary bag though is the Kata 3n1-30. It is larger then I need, but I wanted to grow into the bag. I could have easily have gotten away with the 3n1-20. I also have a case logic holster, a lowepro waist pack, and about 4 other bags. The 3n1's can be used as a backpack, left sling or right sling. I looked at a ton of bags before picking it. But everyone has different needs/wants in bags, so you will get a ton of different opinions/suggestions here.

Only 2 bags? It seems this hobby never stops at 2 of anything! :rotfl: I just got a Tamrac Adventure 7 (http://www.amazon.com/Tamrac-5547-Adventure-Gray-Black/dp/B000EB7OTU) for Christmas, I think I'm going to like it for the parks because it's a decent size but not too big where it'll get uncomfortable when loaded. The bottom half holds your gear, the top half is a separate compartment (where I plan to actually stow my camera when it's not around my neck). I've also got a Lowepro Mini Trekker (http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Mini-Trekker-AW-Black/dp/B00009R85Z/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1261843047&sr=1-4) backpack, but I use that more for lugging all of my gear around rather than taking out shooting.

I got the Lowepro Fastpack 250 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000YIYQ30/?tag=craher-20) recently and love it. Its got plenty of room for my DSLR and several lenses. The nice thing is that you can just swing the bag around and get to your camera quickly with the side pocket. and the flap over the main camera compartment seems to keep things secure so no one is going to fish out your camera while your back is turned.
Also, if you like to carry a laptop with you a 15" laptop will fit nicely into the back. Plenty of storage in the top for other essentials.
One small drawback that you'll notice if you read the Amazon reviews is that there is no place to attach a monopod or tripod. I'm thinking about getting some heavy duty webbing and making a small strap to attach things to the outside.

I got the LowePro Fastpack 250 for xmas! Hold my camera and my 300mm extra lens, some other supplies ( possibly other lenses if I had them ). But it also holds my laptop and a bunch of other stuff in the upper pouch. It also has the same quick-access side pouch as the Slingshot. It's just a bit bigger which is exactly what I wanted to hold extra stuff ( like water bottles and what not ).
Can't wait to take it on the road.

I'm a 3-bagger. My main bag is a backpack - the Kata R102...it is large enough to hold everything I own related to photography, including the rare ability to hold a camera body with battery grip installed and Tamron 200-500mm lens mounted (a primary selling point when purchasing a main bag). I currently keep 5 lenses, body, flash unit, filters, remotes, chargers, cleaning kits, spare batteries, compact camera & charger, memory cards, and rain covers in the Kata.
When I head out on day trips, I usually grab body with one lens, and a second lens or two, and load them in my Tenba Black Label medium bag. It can also handle some accessories and spare bits - and probably could squeeze a 3rd lens if needed. It's a shoulder bag.
The third bag is a small Tamrac video bag that fits my camera body with up to my 18-250 lens attached...and that's about it. It's what I bring along when I need a quick place to stick my camera if it's raining or to keep it safe.

I carry a small camera, 2 memory cards, notebook(mini), pen, cleaning wipes for the lens, and about 10 AA batteries. My issue is I have them crammed in a tiny camra case which is a pain in the butt when Im trying to whip out the camera and not loose anything. I love to hike and moutain climb (which means my camera goes too). What kind of bag would you reccomnend to stow my gear that can handle being treated a bit roughly?

What type of camera? And what type of bag do you prefer. Since you want to use it in "adventure" settings, do you want a backpack or a waistpack/belt set-up? And do you really need to take a netbook hiking and climbing? Are you looking for a general use bag that you can take out for adventure? Or do you want a specific bag for adventure use?

Its just a kodak easy share P&S right now. Soon to be a cannon rebel (i hope). I dont know what I want, Im not sure what would work best in this setting. I do need my notebook and pen, I like to write down things that go with my pictures, things to look up (how to make_____ the perfect picture). I only want to have one bag in my life so it needs to be adventure frendly but also good for everyday.

Opps, you meant notebook....I was thinking notebook as in a laptop. I can't speak for having one bag, as I regularly use 4. I suggest you go to a well stock camera store and try them. A good store will have weights of some form for you to load a bag.

Before I invest the money in this, I want to make sure I understand what I'm getting.
We really only got photopass pictures taken on two occasions. (I was trying to get my free 5x7, but I didn't realize that you had to get it *at* WDW. ) ANYWAY.... There's really only one that I want and I would love to have it to use how I please.
When you buy the photopass download, are you essentially buying the copyright license? Can I then get this photo printed anywhere and in any format that I like? Or am I just supposed to print it on my home printer? Will they balk if I send it off to Snapfish to have an ornament made out of it? Will Walmart/Sams print off copies without a signed waiver?
Anyone BTDT that could offer some insight?
Thanks!

In December, 2008 trip, I pre-purchased the photopass CD. When the photos were uploaded to the website, I was able to customize the photos (keeping the original also) and add my own for customization. When I was done, I ordered the CD which came with the copyright. It gave me total rights to the photos. I haven't had any problems getting them printed or sharing them with friends. I have used them for two years on my Christmas cards.

I'm a hiker who has had a variety of cameras and bags over the years. If you are moving to a Canon Rebel hold off on buying a bag since you will find your needs changing quite bit.
I started with non-digital of course and used belt bags then moved to fanny packs with my first good digital point and shoots (Canon G5, G9). Fanny packs always served me well especially at Disney and on short day hikes. I really like the Kata bags for carrying gear and water bottle etc.
But when I bought my Canon XSi (Rebel family :goodvibes) I knew I needed more space and wouldn't want to use a backpack (have plenty of those for hiking in general) for photography. I like having my camera and lenses right at hand for use while hiking or sightseeing so I looked and looked. I tried on various bags and ended up with the Lowepro SlingShot 200 (http://products.lowepro.com/product/SlingShot-200-AW,2035,4.htm) which I really like so far.
It holds my Canon XSi camera, 2 additional lenses, my Canon G5, extra battery, assorted cleaning odds and ends, chapstick, small snacks, id etc. Only issue is water bottle but I'll figure that out. I hang a small tripod on the outside.
Before I bought this bag I spent hours reading camera bag reviews on Amazon etc. and trying on bags in stores. There are also old threads in this forum about bags so search for more info. Everyone has distinct preferences about the type of bag they like; backpack vs. slingbag vs. whatever.
I have to admit though that when I hiked all day (6+ hours) on the Skyline Trail at Mt. Rainier I added my Kata fanny bag for water bottles and 10 essentials (poncho, map, first aid, lunch, tylenol etc.) and wore it in the front. It really came in handy because I rested my Canon XSi on it as I hiked. I kept the camera from bouncing around by sliding the zoom lens under the 'lift loop'. I could swing my LowePro bag around front to change lenses etc. when needed.
This picture shows my camera lens hooked through my Kata fanny pack loop (a bit crazy I admit) but it worked even when I fell off the trail, broke my ankle and the camera came through fine!

I hike with my dslr. What I do is carry the camera around my neck most of the time and everything else goes in my daypack. I have a Zing case for my camera to help with the bumping around- when the hiking gets really tough/steep or it starts to rain I stick the camera inside my backpack- which is just an LLBean daypack, not a camera bag. Between the Zing case and the extra clothing in my pack the camera is well protected. I have been known to hold the camera strap in my teeth to get thru a steep spot and will put the camera strap under the waist strap on my pack to stabilize the camera. This hike I had my 70-300mm lens in my pack in its case. The camera stayed on my neck th whle time. This was a hike up to Joffrey Lakes in BC

We know the copyright release comes with the PhotoCD, but I guess you really need to know if it comes with a photo download. I really hope it would, otherwise, a download doesn't help you much. :)
A quick email to photopass support will get you an answer within 24 hours. They're good with replying.

i bought it... lots of very nice pics BUT be warned! quite a few pics that are in the gallery on the website arent on the cd or at least they weren't in november when i got it.
I would not have bought it otherwise. It's okay, but I rather have shots that I take. I'm not a professional, but I have a better library of pictures that I have taken through the years with my own digital camera.
If you don't want to spend the time yourself doing it then I guess it's ok.

I bought one at WDW in December, but only because they offered it for $10 because we bought a photo package that was over $30. After looking at it, no way would I spend $40 on it. There are about 150 photos total on the CD, but some of the selection is pretty lacking. For example, I was surprised when I went to the Resorts folder and found that they only had about 4 or 5 hotels accounted for. And I agree that the photos contained on it are very professionally done, but if you're a serious amateur with a decent dLSR and a good wide angle lens, you can duplicate most of the photos on the CD yourself. Case in point, I was surprised at how similar the Osborne Lights photos on the CD were to the ones I took.

We're heading down to WDW in March and are bringing the whole family for the first time! I've read about the personal session with a PP photographer and just wondering what peoples experiences have been. We're staying at AKV-Kidani, if that makes any difference.

It's been 5 years since I've been to Disney and the photopass thing has changed dramatically since then. My head is hurting from reading all the options and restrictions.
Anyone here have any suggestions, preferences, anecdotes of what to do, not do etc?
I have an awesome camera and will take a eleventy billion photos of my own. But I can always use more. :)

We used it back in Sept for our 1st trip, and I thought it was worth it. However, that was when you could pre-purchase the CD for $99. We stopped at several of the photographers we saw throughout the parks and had numerous pictures taken.
I think what really made it worthwhile for me was:
1. we could all be in the pictures
2. adding the borders after we got home
3. the "magic" pictures (Tinkerbell, holding the Mickey balloons, Stitch, etc)
4. the locations of the photographers being "prime" spots (we got some great pictures on our way to Tusker House for an 8:10 ADR before the park opened with the Tree of Life in the background that we would have missed in our rush)
I also have a good camera, and I took over 2,000 pictures during the week. We spent a day with friends of ours, and we did take pictures of each others families, but it was nice to have a large number of pictures of my family together.
It is expensive, and I know that you cannot just pre-purchase the CD unless you get an e-mail after making your reservation. I can't say that I will do it again, but I will most likely - especially if I can take advantage of the pre-purchase savings.
PS - my kids (then 2 & 4) are more patient for "strangers" sometimes (the photopass photograhers were one of these times)

I have to agree with the other post. I am the one always taking pictures and we never get family pictures.... so that was my 1st reason on getting the cd. We had A LOT of pictures taken by the photopass photographers.... everytime we saw them and there wasn't a long line, we had our picture taken. After re-sizing, adding frames, ect... we ended up with 300-something pictures.

If anyone's on the fence about it, you can pick up Adobe Lightroom 2 from NewEgg here (http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx) for half price - $149.99 - with free shipping, but it's a "shell shocker" so it's only good for this morning.
Of course, Lightroom 3 will be out before too long and I'm sure you'll have to pay to upgrade to that... but it might still be cheaper in the long run, as the current upgrade price to 2 is $99, so if you bought 2 for $150 and upgraded to 3 for $99, that's cheaper than the normal $300 price.
Your other option is to get the educational price if you have a kid in school or are in school yourself... $99 I think.

The biggest transtion for me in going from my cute little Nikon Coolpix to my beastly Canon Xsi (clearly not to be confused with Mark Barbieri's new lens which is really the current "beast") :thumbsup2 is the size issue.
The "cute" camera fit in numerous purses, pockets, and backpacks in its stylish tiny Vera Bradley tech pouch. The "beastly" camera needs its own home. It can't be tucked into anything. Thus, the pursuit began.
I spent half a day researching bags online: reading Dis posts, various photo blogs, and online camera bag sites. I selected the Lowepro Slingshot 100 and added it to my Christmas list. Having wonderful parents, it was beautifully gift wrapped, and I excitedly opened it. My enthusiam waned. I tried the bandolier style (which was why I liked it; quick access to my camera) and it wasn't comfortable. This bag must be better for men than women (use imagination here). However, I like that I can fit the camera, a couple of lenses, cables, cd's and papers. So, I decided to keep it to house my humble collection (Xsi, 18-55IS, and 55-250IS) knowing that I probably won't be using it to carry my equipment.
I have too many bags (purses, duffles, totes) so I determined at some point that I was not to purchase more unless I had a specific need. My new SLR created the need. The Lowepro wasn't going to cut it, so I went back to the laptop.
I looked at more bags and ordered the Mountain Smith Quickfire Med. This would hold my camera with the telephoto lens on it when I need it for the soccer season and will hold it with its every day lens when I don't need the telephoto. (I am already struggling with the bulk of the camera; I am not quite ready to regularly carry an extra lens.) ;)
The Mountainsmith arrived. uh-oh it's big too. It is oddly shaped if I am not using the telephoto lens. I resolved that it was okay and would do. I took the Lowepro to a birthday party with an extra lens :thumbsup2. Not loving the Mountain Smith or Lowepro.
Now, a month later, I am itching for the right bag again. What am I going to take to Disney, afterall? I decided to try the Crumpler Million Dollar Home. Alas, which of the bags is right for me. Baby Bear's, Momma Bear's or Pappa Bear's? So, I ordered a 2, 3 and 4 million dollar bag from ebags.com - free shipping and returns!
This is my assessment. The 2 million is small; its cute. I could fit my camera in, but the strap would have created a tight fit. (This raises another issue - what to others do about the straps when they put their cameras away?)
The 3 million is nice. The camera fits; it has a little room and I can fit my cell and/ or iPod Touch in the little pouch. Certainly my AP and KTTW will fit too.(oh, and an extra battery and SD card.)
The 4 million is just slightly bigger than the 3. It isn't a huge difference, but I considered that I might be able to fit in a couple of other items. It could be a purse too... After consideration, I determined that my thought was silly. I wasn't going to put purse items in the pouch with my camera. However, the decision was made when I put it over bandolier style and the strap was much wider than the 3 million.
Overall, what drew me to the Crumpler is the look. It doesn't look like a camera bag. I was a bit concerned about the lowepro sitting with the extra lens on a chair without me. It wasn't comfortable enough to wear around with the camera on my neck (or for that matter without the camera.)
Additionally, a nice feature of the crumpler is the silencer flaps for the velcro. The bag has a latch which I prefer to the velcro.
I hope this helps anyone looking for a bag who is new to a "big" camera. Although I really miss the size of my cute Nikon camera, I wouldn't trade my remarkable Canon.
So, I currently have two bags (three will go with UPS once the snow allows :rolleyes1). I know this is a good start to the collection I will build over the years.

Congrats on finding a bag that's just right for you. I too started with a Lowepro slingshot and was not comfortable...same reason as you, I think ;). I kept it because my hubby carried it just fine.
I have tried on countless bags at local stores and camera shops, finally finding my perfect fit in the medium Jill-E bag (http://www.jill-e.com/jill-e_med/med_red.html). It's a little pricey, but I love it. I have the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and it will carry it with room to spare. And it looks like a purse...a giant purse, but still very feminine. My hubby won't carry it for me, but I kept it Lowepro slingshot for times such as that.
Again, congrats. I love the look of the crumpler bags and think you will be very happy. :)

Thanks for the link Amy. Your bag is lovely. The brown one looks like what I would carry for a purse. If I were a photographer going for a meeting this would be so smart looking. As it is, I am a teacher with two young girls and a love of Disney trips. I don't think anyone would be surprised to see me with that bag on the soccer field, but right now, I couldn't justify it to my husband. (It would be like me buying another Coach bag). It is so cute, though. I will save the link. Meanwhile, the Crumpler is a great option for me.

I have quite a collection of bags. For light, everyday use, love my Crumpler $5mil. However, my main kit no longer fits in that bag. So, I have a Think Tank UD which works well for every day. Since I usually have my 70-200 lens with me, messenger bags can get too heavy for all day. So, for travel, I use the Kata 3n1 series. It allows side access like the sling, but can be worn as a backpack. Much more comfortable to carry. Slings are great unless you are a woman :lmao:

I carry a Crumpler $4M bag but the Xsi only goes in there between home and the hotel. After that the camera stays out and the bag is full of lenses, usually a 70-200 and 10-22 (and sometimes a water bottle or light jacket).

My first camera bag was the Tamrac Velocity 7 sling style bag. I very quickly outgrew that bag and DW purchased me the Lowepro Sllingshot 200 based upon reviews from others. The only time I use the Slingshot is traveling to the airport and then to the hotel. I can honestly say, I really hate the Slingshot. I wish I knew how to explain this to the DW.:confused3

I know what ya mean, Linda. I've had to upgrade bags as my gear has been upgraded a few times now.
I started with a messenger bag meant to use shooting and just didn't ever like it. Moved up to the Crumpler 6MDH and found that while it fit everything I had at the time, I hated carrying it around. It just wasn't comfortable. So, liking the style of the 6MDH I switched to a 5MDH to carry around for shooting and a Kata 467 backpack for storage/carrying my gear while traveling.
Unfortunately, the Kata backpack is slowly but surely getting to be a tight fit again, especially with the addition of the 70-200 f/2.8 I purchased in December and I find that this birthday I may be asking for yet another bag.

I kept the 3 million. The strap on the 4 million was wider and not as comfortable. The space on the 4 would have fit an extra lens. I was searching for a everyday (carry around Disney) bag. Keep in mind that I am really struggling with the adjustment to the size of my Canon.
Here are pics...since I only have one good camera (which needs to be in the pics) these are taken with the "cute" camera.

I like Lowepro brand bags.:lovestruc
They have a variety of styles and sizes as well as organizational arrangements.
I have had a Lowepro padded back pack style bag for years and I can attest to it's comfort and durability. My bag has velcro dividers that can be arranged in just about any fashion, which at times has allowed me to carry water bottles or other "stuff" that wouldn't be considered "camera" equipment inside the bag.
Heavy duty, seemingly impervious to dirt and flexible storage are key words that I would use to describe this brand. The zippers are also excellent!
They only other thing I would add is to get the next size up than you think you will need. After you start using this bag you will find more things that are good to put in it and it will make using this bag even more convenient!
I hope that helps,
Smoochies, :love2:

I have used Lowepro for several years and have found them to be very rugged and useful. I have the Slingshot 200 aw and the Fastpack 200. They are both good for a DSLR with (depending on size) several lenses and flash. In the Fastpack I have the camera with attached 70-200, kit 18-55, flash and filters, etc. I will upgrading to a larger size for travel before our next trip to WDW because my kit has grown since the last trip. I have found the best prices for Lowepro at www.avidmaxoutfitters.com. They usually have some type of sale or giveaway.

I have been using a Tamrac (I believe it's the Explorer 7) which holds my DSLR with a 18-55 lens, the extra 70-300 lens, and their is room for the ext. flash. That is in the bottom of the backpack. The top section is a separate pocket that holds other stuff you want to take along - jacket, snacks for the kids, etc. A small pocket is on the front of the lower section that holds memory cards, business cards, etc. And there's also a mesh pocket on either side for water bottles, etc. I think I paid around $65 for it. It is comfortable to carry and has been protecting my equipment everywhere we go - soccer games, vacations and WDW.

We are booking a private Photopass session at the Beach Club in May. The sessions can be booked from 8 am until 7 pm or sunset. Since the shoot will be at the Beach Club im assuming there will be a lot of outdoor shots.
What time of the day would you suggest booking the session to get the best light? Should we go with midday when the sun is at its peak. Or something a little later to catch some of the sunset?
Any suggestions are appreciated!

I'd definitely go later to catch the sunset. That mid day light can create some really harsh shadows. Also with the light coming on at the resort and across the way at Boardwalk you will get some really nice backgrounds.

I've always heard that midday was the worst time to do a photo session. Like JoeDif said above, you get really harsh shadows during midday. And because the light is so bright, it can create extremely bright highlights, too.
In general, the best times for photography are during the 2 "golden hours", which are about 1/2 hour before & after sunrise (1 hour total) and 1/2 hour before & after sunset (another hour). That's when the ambient light outside is the softest / most diffuse, creating softer shadows.
Believe it or not, even Wikipedia has an article about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_hour_%28photography%29
Hope that helps. See if you can take some breaks during that 11-hour photo session. Whew! :)

Does anyone know where to get photo pass discounts or coupon codes?

We got 1 coupon in advance with our welcome package/magical express tags (we booked through CAA), then ended up getting 2 better ones while actually at WDW (1 at MNSSHP, one in our room as an Anniversary "present"). We didn't use the Photopass enough to warrant getting a CD, but did order a couple 8x10's from the Halloween party.

I know there will be so many opinions on this. I've narrowed down that I want mainly
Backpack style - Not sure I'm fond of the sling style being a woman w/ a larger bust ;).
Side access port
No laptop needed
tripod clip nice but there's always a way to strap that on
I wish I had a place where I could see all three together. But I know Wolf carries 2 of them. One place carries the kata but have a no return policy.
My top choices (so far) are..
Tamrac Aero Pack 75
Lowepro Fastpack 200
Kata 3N1 20 or 30 (the 20 seems so much smaller than the other 'medium' size brands)
Anyone compared these bags for themselves. I'm so indecisive about stupid stuff like this..and with paint color. :goodvibes
I'm afraid to ask if there are other great bags that meet my requirements.
Thanks!!

I have the Kata 3N1 10 and use it mostly as a backpack and it's very comfortable. When I'm travelling by airplane I'll use it as a sling pack sometimes because I have a Vera Bradley backpack purse that I have also, and I can carry them both that way.
Last summer, I actually took my Kata fully loaded down to the camera store to check out the 3N1 20. Of course everything fit but it was only slightly larger than the 3N1 10 and it really wouldn't have held anything else. The 3N1 30 is larger than I wanted to carry.
I haven't checked out the other two you are considering, but I'm happy with the Kata.

I have the Lowepro Fastpack 200 and use it to travel with my camera.
When I go into a park, however, I use my Lowepro Slingshot 100.

I have the Tamrac Aero 80 (has the laptop space but not the side entry) and it's my favorite bag for travel. I love the top compartment and the small storage areas located in the bag. I also use the water bottle holder and other outside mesh pocket a lot. :thumbsup2 I don't use it for walking around like in the parks though as I prefer something smaller but if you're used to taking a backpack then this one is a good one. I do like the side entry and larger area for the camera on the Aero 75 - that is improved over the Aero 80.
I've used a Kata 3-n-1 30 which is similar in size to the Tamrac I have but I did not like the camera access as well although there are other nice features to the bag like the sling option, the bright yellow interior to see things better and the rain cover. It has nice pockets on the inside but nothing on the outside.

I read that we should get an email regarding pre-ordering the PhotoPass CD at 45 days before our trip. Is that true? We haven't received anything and want to pre-order/get discount.

The answer is you MAY get an offer...or you may not. It's like anything else. Disney now gets to offer you the right to pre-purchase photopass. You don't automatically get to pre-purchase anymore :headache: My October and January trips I did not get sent a pre-purchase offer either

I got the email today, at the bottom of the email is: "Disney's PhotoPass offer is only valid when purchased prior to your check-in at the Walt Disney WorldŽ Resort", but when you click the link photopass link it didn't give me any sort of discount. I guess you don't necessarily get the discount even when you get the email.

I received a "welcome back" email from Photo Pass today along with a generic "your trips is almost here" email - no pre-purchase information.

I booked my trip through AAA. I had read about the prepaid discount on the photopass CD, but also read that I was not eligible since I had booked my trip through an agent.
An entry on one of the boards (I think, mousesavers--sorry, couldn't find it :sad2:) suggested that I have my travel agent contact the photopass people, give them their agent info and the dates of my trip. The photopass people would pass the email to the marketing folks who would hopefully send out a discount code (not quite the same as the prepaid plan). I did so and my travel agent called me by the close of business to tell me that Disney had sent me an email with a special $50.00 off code.
If you have an agent, you might want to ask him or her to contact Disney.

We leave in 8 days and I just received mine today. It said "Your Disney Vacation Is Almost Here Dean Family!" from Disney Destinations. It has Disney's PhotoPass CD Save $50!. I had also received the other emails that did not have the pre-purchase information. When we went in December I received the email with the pre-purchase information 30 days before our trip.

I just called Photopass to ask. Since I booked through Disney, they said approximately 10 days before my trip I would receive an email from Disney Destinations entitled something to the effect of "Magical Musts". In that email will be lots of links, one of which will be for Photopass. Using that link it will lead me to the discount for pre-purchasing the Disney CD.

I just received the 45-day out "Must See" e-mail, which in the fall had the link to the photopass discount. This link was just taking me to a general photopass info page this time. But it seems according to your info I need to wait until about a week before hand. And look for an additional email.

We pre-purchased for our January 2009 trip and didn't need a code. I'm a planner and list person, so I just want to get it done! I guess I'll have to wait.

I emailed the photopass email last night and they responded. I'll receive an email 10 days before we leave with an email "Magical Must."
I did receive one that says "Must Sees" this week, but when I followed the photopass link - just informational.
Does anyone know the current special?

Does anyone use the catalog feature in Lightroom? What are the advantages of using it?
Thanks

I do. I have one for my personal photos, one for my studio shoots, and my wife has one for her yearbook photography. It makes everything more manageable. Backups are easier. Searching is easier. I recommend them if you have very distinct groups of pictures with little or no overlapping elements. Examples might include personal vs work for hire, his vs hers for spouses that like to keep things separate, a collaboration collection when working someone on a project, or (for John Edwards types) one for photos with the wife and a different one for photos with the mistress. It's one of those two Americas things.

LOL...such practical applications.
Since I'm the only one using it I'll have to come up with some creative categories.

Keywords!
I keyword everything when I import them. If I have a photo from 3 years ago of my daughter at the beach in Presque Isle, Erie with a boat in the background while she builds a sandcastle with sea gulls flying all over then I can find that photo with any of the following keywords....
Lauren
Presque Isle
Erie
beach
boat
sandcastle
sea gulls
water
birds
Oh, and if you use lightroom, don't you kind of have to use the catalog? You don't have an option of just opening up a photo in lightroom without importing it into the catalog, unless newer versions than I have you can...

Good advise about keywords.
You are correct. Usually when I'm done processing images in a catalog (say Disney Aug 2009) I'll save to my drive then delete the catalog. I was wondering about the advantage of keeping them.

Hmm. I think the idea with Lightroom is to keep all your photos in there. It can handle huge volumes without too much problem. I've got about 40,000 shots in my LR catalog and I'm sure that I'm just a piker compared to many people. If you want to keep the shots separate, use the "Collection" feature to organize them into one grouping.

I've got 100,000+ images in my Lightroom library and I keyword everything, otherwise I'd never find anything. I also use the flags for more general sorting. It was a pain tagging old images when I first got Lightroom to set it up but well worth the time spent in the end. For me at least.
