After looking for a great software program to track my workouts, I've decided to make a W.I.S.H. training journal. This will keep data on my progress in this lifestyle improvement process that includes training for my happily ever after! princess:

January, 2005: 262
January, 2006: 248
February, 2006: 244

princess: Wednesday, May 24, 2006 - Overall Update
Working out - I am now able to walk and jog for an hour straight on the treadmill and can complete the ab roller video beginner and advanced workouts. This workout involves a 70 - 75% HRmax during walking on the treadmill at 2.8 and a 75 - 80% HRmax during jogging on the treadmill at 3.0. I'm considering moving to other forms of working out, like water aerobics or the eliptical trainer at the Y. My left knee is sore and tight, but perhaps some stretching exercizes will help that.
Eating - I am now keenly aware of my eating habits whereas for a while I didn't give it much thought. Fast food has been completely eliminated from my diet - at any cost, convenience- or time-wise. If we need a quick meal at home, I fix a frozen entree for dinner. If I'm out and need a pick-me-up, I enjoy a Nature's Valley energy bar until the next meal-time. I've also tried to drink at least .5 - 1 L of water each day, although it is much easier on the working out days.
:wizard: Friday, June 2, 2006
Working out - I've now started a water aerobics program at the Y and it is so much fun! I look forward to going to it so much!! Now Val's coming with me and it will be extra cool.
princess: Friday, July 21, 2006
Working out - Val and I have so much fun doing water aerobics together! Especially with my favorite instructor, Becky. She reminds us so much of Mrs. Trest from RHS. Anyway, I just completed a second hour of jogging 3 miles @ 20 min/mile pace and it feels incredible to be in such better shape. I remember not being able to fathom jogging at this pace for an hour back in the spring. Now I have a really great reason to finish my one-year goal: A WDW vacation in May, 2007! I'm thinking of ramping up my working out with a spinning class - we'll see. I'm nervous that everyone in the class will be skinny-minnies and fit and that I'll be behind and unwelcomed. We'll see next week. So, here's to continued fun and fitness in training for my happily ever after!
:wizard: Tuesday, January 2, 2007
Of course, school starting in August and the holidays have thrown me off track. Here's to a rededication to my health and fitness goals before we leave for our May, 2007 Disney vacation! I've received many comments on how good I look after losing 15 pounds over the course of 2006. A glacial weight-loss pace, for sure, but I've read and heard that that's the key to lasting success with losing weight. I watched an Oprah show back in early December featuring Dr. Oz - an internist (so it seems) who has the best outlook toward losing weight that I've ever heard. So, onward, using the tips and guidelines posed by Dr. Oz and a renewed commitment to making 2007 my most healthy year ever!
princess: Thursday, September 6, 2007
As I go back and read through my training diary, I notice how I set long-ish term goals and sometimes achieve them and sometimes don't. I'm struck by how much conviction and dedication I have maintained over the past couple of years towards taking care of myself. If I could just harness all of that well-intentioned affirmation and apply it to each new goal, I would set out to achieve the next goal for myself building upon the successful experiences - and failures - of my past efforts. I'm finished defining physical well-being as numbers on a scale - oh, I'll check it next year or something - but my health is not determined by a number. So, no more weighing. I'm going to determine my success in taking care of myself by the objective measures I set forth, like the ECs and OPs, striving to complete both long- and short-term goals for completion of those measures. In that way, I'm affirming my right to fail, but recognizing that if I do, it doesn't make me a bad person. Self worth and body image are mutually exclusive! Girl power!

Well, life certainly got in the way of my exercize plans this week! With a neuropharmacology midterm exam, Easter preparations, and houseguests, I just didn't have time or energy to exercize. But, I have watched my eats, sticking to the no fast food except for once last night.
Here's hoping the third week goes much better! :wizard:

WOW, what a ride this month for the exercize challenge! I did insane amounts of water aerobics, aqua jogging, with a little treadmill thrown in, all in the effort to finish the exercize challenge by June 27th - the day we leave for our WDW vacation! What a sense of accomplishment. I finished my 1000 minutes with a treadmill workout that ended with a minute of 15 min/mile, 4.0 pace running that felt strong. Yea for a fit princess on her magical vacation hosted by Cinderella! See you again July 7th, WISH girls, and thank you so much for the encouragement and support these past few months!

Awesome workout. I can't believe how strong my legs and torso felt and how easy my respiration was! Its the water aerobics, I'm sure of it. Feels so incredible to be in such better shape than I've been in years. I couldn't imagine jogging 20 minute miles for an hour at the beginning of this summer! Now, I'm getting all these crazy ideas, like, "I wonder if I can do 15 minute miles. . .how about the Jingle Bell run in December. . .hmm." At 50 minutes last workout, my HR was between 155 and 160 - this time it was a comfortable 148. "That's what they call progress, dear!" (As on COP in WDW!)

Today I tolerated the standing run much better. During 1 min stand/1min sit sets, I made it through 3 runs while stopping twice during the 1 min period. I would count to 50, stop for a rest, then count to 50 again. By that time, the run was over. Otherwise, I completed the seated sprints and hills, except that on a couple of hills I stopped the resistance increases half-way through. My butt bones hurt, but a nice classmate lady got out a gel seat for me - much better. She said I'll get used to it and I sure hope so! Maybe I need a donut to sit on - what a price to pay for fitness. I'm getting stronger, though, and am looking forward to my 4th spin class!

It has been a tough September and October, 2006 after starting my third year of graduate school. I've missed out on 2 of my 12 consecutive completed ECs. We've also adjusted our vacation plans for 2007 - that was hard to do, but we're making the most of it. Our lifestyle around the house has drastically changed since Mom went to work in May - but I've definitely grown as a young woman through the changes. It can be difficult, but we're trying to take everything in stride knowing good things are coming in the next few years.
Seems like a good time to adjust my exercize goals as well. How about this - starting with December, 2006, a year's worth of consecutively completed ECs until November 2007? This is a great way to quantify not only my short-term exercize goals, but also a more long-term goal over a long period of time. Here's to a great year of improving my health, both in body and spirit.

This December brings a sparkling fresh new beginning in my training for my happily ever after! I've finally found an exercize program that works for me, working out at the Y and here at home on the TM. We've planned out our 2007 WDW vacations and have so much special-ness planned for both of them. I'd like to look and feel my best by the time we leave for the awesomest trip ever in May, and even more so for the mostest awesomest trip we've planned for next December!
I've been watching Oprah specials with Dr. Oz that tell us the good and bad things to eat - beyond not eating fast food and donuts (yumsters) - but telling us which oils to cook with, about different types of carbs, watching a waistline instead of a weight number. Which is neato mosquito in my case, because I've found that my weight fluctuates so much over the course of even a day, much less an entire month. So, I'm going to use Dr. Oz's "You on a Diet" tips and will be watching my waistline measurement that indicates how fatty my omentum is. That's the organ that determines how much risk your cardiovascular system is in from your weight. I'm also going to follow an invaluable tip that Dr. Phil dispensed a year ago or so. He says to focus on what you can control, not what you can't. That is, quantify the lifestyle attributes that you can control like minutes of exercize, or servings of goodies, and make those elements part of lifestyle goals. Not your weight, which you can't directly control.
I'm determined to live a healthier life, even if I am an athletic, fluffy princess. That's just me and I need to be my healthiest me and be satisfied with that. So, here's to a year devoted to my physical and spiritual well-being, culminating in a couple of really great milestones - vacations to WDW!

December 4, 2006 - DH and my 8th anniversary!
Here's to quantifying the elements of my goals for the upcoming year.
My "on-plan" days will include:
Drinking at least 1 liter of water per day
Only 1 serving of sweet something per day
Eating whole-grain carbs-minimizing enriched/refined flour to 1 serving per day
Some form of exercise - either planned fun at the Y or on the 'mill, a quick run up the stairs at school, or an AR routine.
My "on-plan" weeks will include:
One fast-food meal - only if a dire emergency arises!
250 minutes of planned exercise devoted to improving fitness
This is my jump-start on my 2007 resolution to improve my body and spirit through loving and accepting myself for the princess I am inside, not the princess I want to look like.

It really is one day at a time at this point.
I have a new reason for being healthier, in addition to looking great - adult princess t-shirts, which I'm desperate to fit into when we go back to Disney World next May!

Here's to the second week of training in 2007! After just a couple of workouts, I can already tell a big difference in my endurance and strength - especially in the torso area. I have an even better reward now for reaching my long term goal (which I haven't exactly defined yet) - a girlie pirate t-shirt that will be on sale at the Pirates event in May! So, add that to the girlie princess t-shirt reward, and I have an amazing reward package waiting for me in May!

Failure is not an option at this point!! I also want to look and feel great when I receive my master's degree diploma. I'm muscle-ing through, but it is without a doubt the toughest set of workouts I've ever done - including the marathon training. I'm beginning to think that my age has something to do with it - thanks for the reminder yesterday, Mom! ;) Anyway, onward and upward with my third week of training - this one should be better. No, it WILL be better! :cheer2:

Ok, we need a small analysis here. First - conditions: freezing/winter ice storm going on outside, and I wasn't poking my head out, no way. I was so cold here in the house, what better way to warm up than with a nice run?
Next - pros/cons: there were many forces at work today that made me not especially want to hop on the TM, but I did do some things right. Here's a whiny breakdown:
Cons - felt lousy all day; general body aches all over; back really tight and hurting; new chest pain that has me concerned, but I'm sure its just indigestion or something; inflammed sinuses (allergies? cold/flu?); cold, quiet, dark, lonely house with both Mom and DH gone; slept until noon because I was up until 2am this morning (groggy and sore) and because I could with the school holiday; working out way later than I usually do - 5-6pm; general not-wanting-to's.
Pros - drank 700 mL before working out, then another during and after (1.4 L today!); ate oatmeal for breakfast, a whole-grain ham/chez sand and Triscuits with little Diet coke for lunch, and a half Kashi bar for a snack before working out (diet: GREAT!); took getting dressed and pumped very slowly, then warmed up extremely slowly; felt ready to go.
I was watching my HR, trying out my new pace of 2.9/3.1/3.3 for the second time since Saturday went so well, and noticed that my HR was elevated even through the walks. By the end of the 30 minutes, my legs were rubber, and I was hitting 170 during the 3.3s. The 2.9s felt extremely labored, like my legs couldn't keep up. Not even my great music and mag rags could keep me occupied. So, at 30 minutes, I backed off to 2.8/3.1/3.3 as I wanted to keep my jogging pace. I was still hitting 166-170, so I decided to walk at 2.8 - 2.5 the rest of the hour. I just bonked. :sad1: I don't know quite what's going on, but I think I have some sort of allergic/inflammatory response going on. I'm going to continue on with my workouts and eating plan this week, but I just feel terrible. Add to that DH and I starting back to school, Christmas being over and us needing to take decorations down and I have a recipe for failure. BUT, I'm not quitting after coming so far already! I'm half-way to my January EC, and I'm not letting up! :cheer2: I have a Pirate adventure and a master's graduation to look great for!pirate:

Today's workout went about a hundred times better - but, I have stuffy sinuses that acted up a little. At 45 min, I saw my HR going to 168, so I thought about backing off. That's why I stopped the HR monitor and took a reading. After continuing on for the 15 additional minutes, I was fine and just kept going to 3 miles completed in 1 hour. Tacked on some minutes at the end with a nice walk that was still above the fitness HR zone. Feel pretty good afterwards, with a little soreness in the left knee and fatigue. No breakfast beforehand and working out at 11:30am probably has something to do with that. Proud of myself, though, and am ready to enjoy my day at home!

The final run felt amazing - and notice how my HR didn't go above 85%max of 166!! I'm feeling like the resistance training is really paying off, as I run stronger and more efficiently the more I lift. The knee is still bothering me, and the back, but I'm going to see an orthopedic specialist about the left knee/leg uneven-ness. Yea for me!

The final run felt amazing - and notice how my HR didn't go above 85%max of 166!! Knee doesn't bother me quite as much - figures you make an appointment with the doctor and the injury heals itself! I feel awesome - stepping up the pace, but keeping the HR under control - starting to get crazy ideas for February goals, but will kick them around and announce them when the February EC begins. For now, I'm so excited to finish my January EC in style! I feel like I can really do this weight loss thing - FINALLY!

My 26th birthday was on Sunday - had an Aloha luau! Such a fun party. For the first time in so long, I'm actually satisfied with my weight - which is a dangerous thing for me. Its hard to keep going on track when I'm even a bit comfortable, so quit that! Anyway, I'm proud of myself, but am trying to stay on target as I continue working on my thesis - its so hard to work on my master's degree for gosh knows how long each day and to fit in workouts. So, here's to finishing out February with a completed EC!

Sigh - I have some 'splainin to do. Trying to finish up data collection, do well in Kirk's advanced exp. design class, and keeping up with L&B lab is kicking my rear. Which looks quite nice, if I do say so myself. Consistent workouts are out the window, so I'm just trying to complete the EC at this point. 's OK because I started spin class this week to boost the cardio factor - it's working already! Here's to finishing the February EC! Onward!

I'm really looking forward to getting my spinning shoes in. Morgan was the instructor today, not great, but really nice. No fans, whew! TM jogging felt great - I'm getting stronger by the workout. I'm trying to take care of myself even through these thesis deadlines because of something I read in You:On a Diet - if you can't make time for health and wellness in your day, then your life is out of control. I'm trying desperately to keep things in control, especially when it comes to balancing work, health, spirit, and home. I can do this!

Worst workout ever! I'm having a difficult time finding a routine, comfortable way to fit working out into my schedule. It takes so much time to get ready, etc. But, after running at the gym in my 360s last week, which felt awesome, I think I'm ready to get back into running. The pool was awful today with certain groups of people swarming - its hard to get a lane and there are dirty old men looking at the girls in there - so much for swimming.

I've decided to run in the Princess Half Marathon at Disney World next March, 2009! Its just time to focus on my health and fitness, and what better way to do that than to combine my efforts with a vacation to WDW in a princess-themed race! Here's my introduction to the WISH racing team, originally posted May 8, 2008 in the "Week of May 4th WISH walking/running club" thread:
Hello, WISH competition/events board! Just saw the sticky that I need to join the weekly thread, so here I am! I started a seperate thread to introduce myself, but posting here to "officially" join the WISH team! I have posted/lurked all around the DISboards for years, am a grad student about to finish my degree, and have let my health and fitness go for the past 10 years after high school (during which I ran cross country and other, local races). My sad end to my teenage-years fitness occurred at mile 14 of my first marathon (for which I was thoroughly trained and physically/mentally prepared) when I learned I had a 104 degree fever and a rampant case of the flu. I quit the race, crying and very sick, climbed in my mom's car with my boyfriend and a bunch of flowers they meant to give me at the finish and never looked back, as life got crazy and the demands of college got in the way. I've been looking for a way to motivate myself to get into better shape, and started spin classes a year ago. I just finished my first full spin class with no modifications a couple of weeks ago, and finished C25K the first week of this past March.
I'm a Disney Princess fan, and Cinderella's story is my very favorite - so, this is a perfect combination of my leisure-time passion, vacationing at WDW and all things Disney Princess, and the desire to transform myself for my fairy tale wedding at WDW and a healthy happily ever after! The race, and our vacation afterwards at WDW, has fallen into place, as I checked my fiance and my college calendar and the race is held on the first Sunday of both our Spring Breaks that semester! Yea! Here's to donning my tiara and running towards my happily ever after with my new fiance and my mom cheering me on next March in Disney's Princess Half Marathon!
And here are some of the warm welcomes I received:
Welcome RoyalCinderella! You sound like you belong here!
Welcome to RoyalCindy :cheer2:
RoyalCinderella: :welcome:
RoyalCinderella - Welcome!!!!! ***I feel like I have to apologize in advance. Many of us hre are not Princess grils adn I, myself, am going to hwhine about the new Pricess race adn say that I am NOT a princess! Please don't take that as any of us being against people who are. :goodvibes Look forward to sharing more with you!!
Absolutely! BTW, as your first big race adn with no other Disney races to compare it too, plus being a innaugural race, I'm usre it will be great fro you! Good luck at the track!
RoyalCinderella: WELCOME!!! :)
RoyalCinderella - WELCOME! This is such a great team to be a part of. I think they'll make a great event out of the Princess Half and it will be a great first Disney event for you :)
Now I want to say:
ROYALCINDERELLA :welcome: ANOTHER NEW WISHER!!!! YEAH!!! I hope your "first day" went well. I have much respect for those who have to do a lot of training on inside tracks. Living in the sunshine state we do most training year round outside. Of course July and August prove a bit difficult with the heat. I know there are many negatives to the princess marathon but personally I have done the Disney 1/2 and the MINNIE and I think EVERY Disney race is awesome and really the princess course is an extension of the MINNIE and I LOVE THE MINNIE!!!! YOu are going to have an awesome time and I am so glad you have chosen to share your journey with us!!!!
RoyalCinderella: Welcome to WISH. :cheer2: It's great to see another C25K graduate, another FT wedding princess, and someone for whom W.I.S.H. carries special meaning. Your plans for the Princess half sound delightful, and I know you'll find a home with us here. (I agree with Carrie--not a Princess girl, and am a bit in awe of those who are.)
. . .And my response:
Thank you all for the warm welcomes! Today is my first "real" training day, and I'm so excited! Of course, its raining cats and dogs - go figure - so I'll be heading to the gym's indoor track for loops upon loops upon loops. I'll just see how far I can get - like a time trial of sorts, only for distance. Wish me luck, I'm nervous! I hope I can get at least 2 - 2.5 miles! Wish wish wish wish:wizard:
I can definitely see the "cons" in the race, when compared with the races you guys have been participating in, but to someone who can't go in January for marathon weekend (school schedule) and hasn't participated in a Disney race before, I don't have any previous experiences to compare it to. So the drawbacks that have been pointed out (which totally I agree with, by the way - like not running through the Magic Kingdom, boring course to Animal Kingdom, no transportation from other hotels, no discounts announced yet, etc.) will just be par for the course for me since its my first Disney race. March is Spring Break time for most all the Texas colleges/universities and most public schools, so yes, it will be crowded, but we aren't skeered. We just think of it as lots of other people wanting a piece of the magic and we find our own magic on vacation even if its crowded.
Here's my introduction and welcome into the Hakuna Matata WISH training team:
Good morning Team mates, please welcome another princess, RoyalCinderella, I thought this would be the perfect team for her.
Sounds like everyone is doing great, now I need to get my lazy butt off to the gym and shake up some pudge cells.
Walking Panda:hippie:
I can tell I'm going to have a ball training for this race along with the WISH racing team - it has been 10 years since I have trained for a race and felt healthy and fit, so this is truly a dream come true! The welcomes from the team are pure gold, and one big difference from how I trained and raced in high school is that I didn't have the support of other Disney fans training toward a common goal. I was doing it just for me, by myself, but this time I have support from other Disney fans and racers - so exciting!

Yeah, so. . .I'm not entirely sure why I didn't train for this run over the summer. . .but I do know I've been very sick since October, finally getting well just before Christmas. I'm so excited for the Spring Break Princess Run WDW trip, and slightly petrified at the same time about the run itself! I'm in the home stretch, working up on the mileage weekly, hoping to reach 12 miles by the last week in February! I must be crazy, but after working out again a couple of weeks this new year, I can already tell that I just may be able to pull this off.

I can't believe I was able to cover 6.5 miles today. This evening, I'm still in disbelief! I had originally planned a 5 mile long run, but felt so strong at the 5 mile point and being excited about DH's Sullivan interview, I decided to keep right on trucking. I had the idea to do so at about 4 miles and hoped I could pull it off. After realizing the distance/boredom at the BU SLC indoor track/Gold's Gym TM dilemma this past week, and explaining it to my DH, he suggested he would accompany me along the way in his car on on his bicycle so I could run outside and still be safe. Lots of fiance points for this one! I think his support and "coaching" helped me make this distance today, as well as really listening to how my body felt the whole way through, eating well this morning, and getting plenty of sleep this night before. I had all my race supplies on me, cell phone and all, approximating my race conditions as closely as I could. I'll continue to do that for all my long runs from here on in. I'm so proud of myself! Here's to longer longer and longer runs preparing for my second half marathon!

A little bit of a bittersweet finish today. . .I was off-pace going into 6 miles, and had 3 minutes to make up at one point, after changing the water strategy on DH and trying to explain it to him at 5 3/4 miles on the Bear Trail. I will also admit that the 2 mile loops played on my head a little as well, because up to this point the out-and-backs were 2 miles, 1 mile, 1/2 mile, etc. But, I finished with one each of my two favorite men on each side of me giving me low-fives as I came across the "finish line." All in all, I did very well at only 1 min off-pace for adding 1.5 miles to my long run. I haven't run 8 miles since I was in high school for heaven's sake!! And, my gosh, I ran for two hours straight!! SH was duly impressed on the way home, and DH said he was proud. They had a good time waiting for me to finish, watching the girls run on the trail, etc. Silly guys, but good coaches, and even better family men.

An epic, super-tastic workout the likes of which I haven't run in literally a decade. I felt strong and proud the entire way, with no leg fatigue or back ache. SH and DH met me with small amounts of water and gatorade every two miles, and held out their arms for a loving finish line. They were so great, driving around the SLC parking lot to help me cool down. I was so hopped up on hormones and adrenaline - it was just an unbelieveable feeling. I walked stronger for about 10 minutes than I ever have in my life! Now for the bad news. . .nothing hurt, until I stepped off a curb in front of Russell Hall just after 5 miles, and the outside of my right foot hurt every step until I finished. And still hurts two days later, so having it looked at soon. Please, please tell me this isn't the end of my training. I'm holding a good thought, though, until I know something from the doctor.

Tried to run the weekend after I saw the doctor on Tuesday, February 27, but after 3 miles I just bonked. Feet hurt like hell, wrapped up in athletic tape and the fracture hurt soooo badly. I felt so defeated, I didn't even want to try and run again, afraid of injuring it further and failing another workout. This time, I just started out on the SLC track and felt fine after 5 miles, so continued out to the BearTrail. Big mistake - wind was 15-20 mph out of the north and bitterly cold. The sun was shining, but the wind just kicked my butt and at 8 miles, I'd had enough. I just hit the wall, didn't want to go any further. I didn't have my water from the guys, so I was dehydrated as well. Better workout next time, I'm sure.

:wizard:I ran the Inaugural WDW Princess 1/2 Marathon! I couldn't believe I actually did it! Didn't run after the last 8 mile workout, worried about my cracked foot, two cracked heels, and an ingrown toenail. I was a hot mess the few days at home and in WDW before the run, but on race day, everything magically resolved itself and I didn't have anything to worry about while I was running. Nothing hurt, and I felt strong and happy. At the 10 mile mark, I took a picture with the 10 mile storybook mile marker, because that was the longest I had run in 10 years! Mom and DH were waiting for me at the finish line and hearing the new "celebration" music as I finished such an incredible run was amazing. I cried when the nice lady put my medal on me! Can't wait to sign up for next year on May 1!princess:

Passey-outey during the pushups, overhead press, and back of arms - have to be careful about that. A tiny bit sore morning after, but overall, feel good.

Well, I shifted my attention away from my health and fitness to adjusting to two awesome things going on lately: I'm finally a doctoral candidate, ABD and moving DH to Louisville to start pharmacy school! Wonderful changes are in store this year! I've worked out once or twice a week the past month or so, nothing serious, though. There is a small workout room here in DH's apartment complex, so I've started back walk/running on the treadmill most mornings before I get ready.
