View Full Version : Shipboard Charging Questions

I have searched the board and found some of the answers that I needed about shipboard charging but I want to make sure that it is still accurate. I want to use my VISA DEBIT card when I enter the ship. Do they charge $500 right then and there on the card or do they wait until you have accumulated $500 worth of purchases on your card before charging it? I ask because it takes several days for my card to process a refund and we are going on to Universal Studios right after the cruise. I know that they refund whatever money you do not spend back to the original method of payment and I am worried that they will charge $500, have us spend only $300 and then refund the other $200 to my card, meaning that I will NOT have that money available to me until 3 days later which is a big problem. I know that other spend in excess of $3000 in shipboard purchases but as a single mom of 3 kids we are going to limit our onboard expenses to under $500.

Also, what happens if you do not physically reconcile your account before you disembark? Do they check to make sure your account is paid before they let you off the ship? I have wondered how Disney handles this just out of curiosity. I plan to leave my VISA DEBIT card on my account but if I do not reconcile my account before I leave (since I am scatterbrained like that), will they just charge my account whatever we spent. I assume that they do it automatically if you do not stop in, right? Do they check you off a list or something when you leave the ship?

Thanks in advance! This board is a great "support group" for those planning a cruise!

I have never had this problem because it is always over $500. Remember that excurisions are not prepaid. You purchase them before you board on ship but they don't charge your account until the ship sails -- so any excursions will be on your shipboard account. Arcade, drinks, etc. will also be on there. Believe me, it adds up and we didn't feel like we were over spending. When I looked at my statement, I saw the $500 dated the day we sailed and then all the deductions. There have been suggestions on this board that you should check your account every day and then you could pay this way -- I know there are some people who still like to pay cash. Perhaps you can do it this way.

Personally, I would be a bit hesitant to use my Visa check/debit card for the very reasons that you mentioned. What we did last year on our cruise was place a credit card on our account but I went down about every other day (7 day cruise) and paid off my account with travelers checks. I think we left the ship with a $20 bill on my credit card that DH spent the last evening. This worked well for us.

Do they charge everyone's credit card $500.00 or can you opt to pay cash? How do you arange this? Can you go each day and pay your charges with your debit card? Do you have to supply a credit card?
P.S. Could you tell me about the excursions? Can you just get off the ship in Nassau and walk to the straw market and a casino?
