I'll join in. 4 of us in a Cat. 5 -- Myself, DW, DD (8.99 then) and DS (7 then). 8th DCL cruise after having done 1 Land/Sea, 2 4-day Wonders, 2 Westerns, the 2004 10-day Christmas Cruise and the Eastbound Panama Canal Repo. Thought about taking a long break from DCL, but couldn't pass up the Med!!!! Will miss Castaway Cay, though.

We're booked Cat 11 on deck 7 no transatlantic flights for us either whoopee!!

We get to do the transatlantic flight for the first time. The MIL, FIL and SIL are doing their first Disney cruise with us and DD (3 by then) will be doing her second cruise. She will hopefully be able to do some kids club stuff this time. DW can't believe that we are actually doing a transatlantic flight with a 3 year old.

Hi everyone!

We have quite a crowd already and its only the first few hours of sales.

Hopefully to night I might be able to get some sleep as I was very restless the last 2 nights- can't think why! ;)

Dh thinks im mad

You know I even enrolled in a 10 week basic hoiliday Spanish course that starts in May.

Have a good night, to all my fellow Brits and rest of a good day to my Usa cruise mates.

My hats off to all of you Europeans who regularly make the trek to the US for Disney and DCL. The airfare for the 5 of us is still what may make or break this trip!

2 hours England to Barcelona - that is just like our Boston to Orlando flights :sunny:

We now avoid flying the day of the cruise (we usually cruise in the winter) to avoid flight problems messing up the cruise. We are planning on spending a few days in London before the cruise. How risky is it booking a flight from London to Barcelona for the day of the cruise? Are there usually delays/issues on that route?

Hi,

There are quite a few firms that go London to Barcelona ( and the prices seem to be good too)

Although personally I would never fly the same day, I would not be able to rest. But then thats probably me being paranoid - I would hate to miss the ship.

We plan to get to Barcelona a couple of days beforehand -

There are many flights each day London to Barcelona and with the ship not leaving until 9pm you should be fine under all normal circumstances. If you want abudget airline try easyjet, very good prices and several flights a day.
Unfortunately it's not unknown for strikes etc to mess european flights up and so personally I'll fly in the day before.
Nice to meet you all now we have 16 months ahead of us for planning

I know we are ;eaving from barcelona but with all the time we are spending in Italy wouldn't Italian be more useful :thumbsup2

Hopefully that will be next years course!! :thumbsup2

As long as I know these phrases I'll be alright;

"Where is the Port with the big ships?"
" A Vodka and coke please"
"Where is the nearest toliet?"
" Have you seen Mickey Mouse?"
" A white coffee please with one sugar" (Normally I drink decaf but I wouldn't want to complicate things :goodvibes )

I have also found this useful site
www. barcelona - tourist - guide . com ( with out the spaces)

For those in Uk - I've emailed BA, Monarch and fly globespan (scotland) to find out when they release the flights for july 2007. Monarch ( Manchester) have replied so far saying this summer. Also found jet2. com fly to barcelona from leeds bradford and Thomson fly . com from coventry.

Im looking for cheap and that will allow more than 20kg!! ( I know Monarch Dont)

Hope that helps
 :goodvibes

British airways fly to Barcelona, so you might get a deal with a stop over in LONDON en route, that might be best.

Remember there is an hours difference between UK and Spain so calculate that in onany flights as going takes 'one hour more' due to the loss of time zone

Thanks for the tip Andrew - in my "planning" I used the BA website with dates this year and have the plan of doing Boston-London (stay 3 or 4 days) - Barcelona - Boston. Those flights fit my it can't be more than this number. I was just wondering if I could do better (with copious amounts of luggage) doing 2 separate round trips - Boston - London - Boston and London - Barcelona - London.

My wife had me do the same thing through Paris, but it was several hundred dollars more per person I can't figure out how to drive the price down for Paris. Since the kids haven't been to Europe London will be a good introduction before the cruise. The price difference is because BA, American and Virgin all flying the route. On Boston - Paris it is an hour further flight and there seems to be less competition so the prices are higher.

Hey everyone! We currently have a cabin reserved on this cruise and are making the final decision on the deposit tonight. Here's hoping we stay on the ship.

One item to note on airfare etc is to check on the policies flying within Europe for baggage and make sure it's not different from flying over from the US. I'm not certain, but I have heard of a few airlines that have different weight and bag number requirements within Europe and for those of us from the US that travel heavy (ok I need all those shoes) it can be costly.

Hey guys. We are onboard. I can't believe it. Micco booked it today, I asked him about their cancellation policy, and he said not to worry, because WE ARE GOING!!!!! I am so excited, I can't contain myself. Trying to keep this quiet from Allie, we will tell her when we see her on Sunday in WDW.

So for those of you who don't know us, let me introduce my family: Debi (me - will be 47 when we cruise), Dh (Micco - will be 48 cruise time), DD (Alex - will be 20 cruise time, currently a WDW CM) and DD (Briana - will be 17 cruise time). We are from NYC and cruised last summer with Jlawall and LynnTarrant. We had such a great time and met so many wonderful people from this board, I am hoping to have the same kind of experience again. The people we met last year will be friends for a lifetime, I am just sad some of them won't be joining us on this trip. But we are looking forward to meeting new people, and having THE TIME OF OUR LIFES. This is a vacation we have waited for for many years, and we are going to enjoy every minute of it.

I guess I will have to brush up on my Spanish too, but the Italian...not necessary, I have Micco with me....

And now I got on this board right from the start so I won't miss anything like last time...LOL.

We are heading to WDW this Sunday for 5 days to see our DD, and we are looking forward to some warmer weather after that crazy snow we had here on Wednesday.

It is very nice to mee all of you, and I look forward to getting to know you over the next 15 months.

HI all - well we made it official today and put in our deposit. We are Julie (me) and Matt (Dh2b) and we are in our 30s. The MED cruise will be our 3rd Disney Cruise as we sailed last year on the DVC member cruise and are sailing on the DVC member cruise this October. We are also getting married at Disney in October - quite the year.

Can't wait to get to know everyone better!

Hi Disneymom 13 :wave2:

Another family here from Staten Island - we are travelling with Disneymagic316 (We have done three cruises together). We are both from Oakwood.

Hello to everyone here too and looking forward to meeting everyone. I do speak Italian, not too well - the dialect.

Sounds like a lot of you already know each other! This is our 9th Disney Cruise so maybe we have been with you at one time or another, but just have not had the chance to meet!

This will be a wonderful cruise and I know there is a lot of excitement! Anyone flying in early? I really know that jet lag might get me! I never sleep on a plane!

Hi JoAnn (did I get that right?, I am terrible @ names ;) )

Just wanted to say thanks for the list - You did a great job. :thumbsup2

I think we have a very good group and I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone.

Just to explain my name - "MrsJobba2" I'm Helen & and DH is Dave .
Dave has always been called @Jobba since his early school days (surname Jobling) so When We got hitched I became - MrsJobba2.

What is really funny is the way they announce our name on the ship - we have heard some funny variations on our past cruises!

We don't have any Kids, :guilty: but we are big kids @ heart and have 3 mad border collie dogs .
Its the first day of the Easter hols - so I hope everyone has a good time

Take care
Helen x :woohoo:

Wow, 3 families from Staten Island on the same Disney Med cruise, IT IS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL. Anyway, nice to meet you Anna S. maybe us Staten Islanders can meet sometime before the cruise!

This sounds like a great group, 15 months is a long time, but I can't wait to meet everyone.  Great job on the list, Joann, such an organizer. Oh, BTW, in those Italian ports, you are definitely going to need Micco. not only does he speak some Italian, he is a GREAT haggler. Sometimes to the point of embarrasment. I have had to walk away at times in Mexico when he gets started.

Our party is four

Daughter Alice will be 11
Son Stephen will be 8.
My children had pen freinds for the 14 day LA>PC repo any Kids on this one want to be pen friends? Please send a PM, they know a lot about DLP.

They usally come available 11 months before, so for July its August, but if you return in August it will be September. BA has many flights.

Hi everyone
It's the school hols over here so I decided with a little time on my hands to set up a spreadsheet with all our info on it. Now I'm not sure how I can post a link to it for you all But I did notice AJ was a Computer Techie so any help from him or anyone else would be appreciated.
Other things I noticed whilst compiling my spreadsheet was the number of Disney cruises we have done between us was staggering, very few people have not mentioned a prior cruise at some point in their posts. So if you are new to DCL there should be lots of people on the thread to help you so just ask away.
MV Photon we also cruised at Christmas 2003 I wonder if we met at all, there was a great bunch of DISers aboard and one family we met on that cruise are coming to see us in the UK this Summer.
Disneynut1955, if I'm reading your siggy right you are living on the 2 Disney Ships over the next year right! :rotfl2: Again if I've got it right you are going to be invaluable to our group as you will have experienced the first 11 day cruise as well as the repo and will have loads of info to share with us!! :cheer2:
Lastly this cruise will be party central as as a group we have 6 Anniversaries and 6 Birthdays to celebrate while we are away... that's a party every night and 2 on one night!!!!
Some of you are now wondering what is this sad lady doing gathering all this info well it might be the hols for the kids but I really should be catching up on paperwork, somehow this little project seemed so much more appealing.... yes you've guessed it I'm a procrastinator :rolleyes1

What year do you teach? I was a full time Key stage 1 teacher until last year when I went part time. I now cover PPA for Reception up to Year3. I know what you mean about the paper work

I've spent the last few days on ebay and I've acquired a spanish phrase book with CD, An Italian phrase book with CD, a book about european cruise ship ports and a guide book on Barcelona :rolleyes1 ( They were very good value  )

We are going to be celebrating my birthday to on board ( well I know its reallly on the 17th Aug but the DVC cast member told me she'd write it down anyway.

Have fun planning - :surfweb: Just think next half term is only 5 weeks long and theres a bank holiday as well !

Hi Helen, part time sounds good!!
I'm the headteacher of a small one form entry primary school only about 150 children, Unfortunately the paperwork seems the same large or small school just less people to do it!!!
I'm very impressed with your search for language materials I've never been very good at languages myself, can manage to ask for a drink in France and Portugal and that's about it maybe I should join you. Do you think Disney will run Italian classes on the ship? That would be fun.
Have you cruised with DCL before?

Hi Lynn,

Dave and I are DVC members since 1999. (wow time flies) We honeymooned on the Magic in 2000 doing a 4 night cruise. We have also previously been on 2 x 3night cruises on the wonder. The last time being Aug 2005- unfortunatly I have disc degeneration in my spine and back problems ( Thats why I went part time). On Castaway Cay my back went into spasm and I was in a lot of pain. :sad2: A CM used his own car to get me back to the ship!

This July Dave and I are combing 7 nights @ SSR with the 7 night western! I just hope my back stays put ! I just have to take it easy.

I am also trying to lose weight so I'll join you there! :yay: Not sure how I'll manage with the languages but IM willing to have a go!

Dave and I were talking saying I wonder whether they will give castaway club members somthing unique for this cruise, our suggestions would be a leaning to of Pisa or the eiffle tower with mickey ears!

Julie & MAtt (chipscinderelly)- Yes I'll let you know about the book when it arrives from ebay. ( I only paid a couple of £'s and it was pub in 2001)

Have a good night

Hi again

Of course, I subscribed to this thread, but am now just catching up. I'm fluent in Spanish, and I think learning some Italian is a great idea, since the kids & I plan on taking the tours in Italy. I also have a goal to lose weight before we go, so I'd like to join you. :)

I went on a 3-day cruise back in 2003 (& it was so much fun!), and neither of the kids have been on a DCL cruise, so this will be a real treat for them. I'm looking forward to making plans with you all, and hopefully meeting up with you on the cruise.

Someone mentioned uploading a spreadsheet online. Let me know if you still want to do that & I can try & upload it on my website for all of us to see.

Ok now I know some of you were asking about visiting Disneyland Paris whilst in Europ. I have just found out about a Hotel Train which leaves Barcelona at around 8pm and arrives at 8:30am the next morning in Paris where it's a simple matter to get onto the Euro Disney Express train. There are sleeping cars which can accommodate 4 or 2 or deluxe cars sleeping two with shower and toilet. very European to travel by train. here's the link

I've ridden the "literas" in the trains from Spain - Germany. I could have sworn there were 3 beds on each side, but it was some time ago. They're not that much more money than regular seats in a train & you don't have to get off the train when you go from Spain -> France (the reason being that the tracks in Spain are wider than the rest of Europe, so they have to lift the train & adjust the width between the wheels when crossing). I was able to stay in the litera, while the folks in the rest of the train had to get off. It was a cool adventure!

Thanks for the info, Lynn! This is something we're definitely thinking of doing.

We received the confirmation yesterday and they had our 3 staterooms on 2 different cruises. We were on the phone first thing and got a cat 6 with 2 cat 11s directly across the hall. Linked dinner reservations and everything. Problem was the 11s were on the July 8th cruise (or 7th - whichever day it is) and the 6 was on the correct one for the 28th.

How in the world do you book 3 rooms together and link the reservations for dining and have them on different dates. Luckily they were able to get us side by side 11s about 10 doors down on the same side and deck as the 6 but I wonder how many moves they had to make to do that since online it was only showing rooms at the far ends of the ship as available.

Palos. an idea, on the next cruise I am due to take with DCL on 8/19/2006, the group have booked Palo for Brunch and dinner on a group basis in the private dinning area of Palo.

For brunch is must be a sea day and between 12/14 adults, for dinner any evening.

I understand these can be booked far more in advance than the normal rules of 105/90/75 days.

Is anyone interested in this idea, may I suggest Brunch on the first sea day after leaving port at Barcelona and dinner on the other sea day between ports in Italy.

Looks like its limited, could someone in USA call on the toll free number?

I and my wife would be interested!

How about if we add DIS Meet Suggestions on the Excel, so people who want to join in can. I can put it as part of the first tab, or put in a 2nd tab.
GOOD IDEA

I hope it's okay with everyone -- I merged the two threads for our cruise July 28th & changed the title to make it easier for everyone to find.

And another!

I was thinking I am glad I booked the cruise near the end of the set of Med cruises. We have a huge advantage!! First, Disney will have all the kinks worked out, so hopefully all will be smooth. But better than than that, we will have the advantage of these boards and everyone experiences before us. I can't wait to read some of the trip reports and hopefully live reports. Palos. an idea, on the next cruise I am due to take with DCL on 8/19/2006, the group have booked Palo for Brunch and dinner on a group basis in the private dinning area of Palo.

Hi :wave2:

We have two cabins through DVC and on through DCL. We have received written confirmation for the DCL reservation and even an amended confirmation due to a cabin change. So far, nothing from DVC and i have already received today's mail, which contained the Disney Visa bill with the charge posted. While speaking with DCL they do show the DVC reservation and cabin, so I am not too concerned.

Hi,

I've been reading the post on the general cruise board regarding hotels.
It says that DCL are offering;

Hilton Barcelona $295
AC Barcelona $270
Grand Marina $310
Hesperia Presidente $235
Atenea Mar $230

I was just wondering what every one was doing? Has anyone booked through DCL? We have booked our cruise through DVC, we used points for 1 person and paid cash for the other. As we had to pay for the person we dont have any spare cash at the moment to book a hotel if we have to pay up front.

Can anyone recommend any good websites to book with?
As the flight details from UK aren't out till summer I think we'll probably leave it till then. ( but I think we'll probably have 3 nights in Barcelona before the crusie)

We've still had no written confirmation from DVC but my barclaycard was debited on 4th april for the cost of 1 person ! ;)

Take care
:wave2:

I also noticed the $75 charge for my DVC reservation but like I said earlier, no confirmation from DVC.

You can check it on-line.

We are hoping to book our own air as soon as it is available and will cancel it on the cash ressie.

I don't think we are doing any pre or post cruise hotel - my dh and my two sons who work p/t cannot take more than two weeks off. I would have really, really tried a bit harder if the port was in Rome.

BEFORE CRUISE

I plan to book up the coast a bit somewhere like Blanes, fly into and out of Barcelona from London.

Whilst transfers or car hire required, Blanes and that part of the coast is nice, better than a beach in Barcelona, and itso n the train line so i can travel to/from City, Airport etc.

Hotel costs are better out of the city, and I have found a few on half board cheeper than the City hotels.

Will book flights in September when they come out.

Insurance will use a UK company

Mary Jo

Before the cruise I'm planning on going to Barcelona for 2 nights. I've been checking out the hotels in the area, but haven't really decided yet on which one we'll be going to. Since I've traveled around Spain a bit (not Barcelona, though), I'm not too worried about staying so close to the port, so we could stay someplace else, & then take a taxi when we're ready to board.

I have relatives who live in the north of Spain, & we'll be visiting them, too, but I think I'd like to visit them after the cruise, instead of before, and I also want to go to DLP - if I can fit it in $ wise. They live in Asturias, which isn't close to Barcelona.

I'll be checking flights from Los Angeles - Barcelona, and train travel, too - depending on what we want to do.

I got my insurance through dcl.

Wow, this thread has grown. I'm booked for this cruise. Can't wait. :cool1: There is a total of 9 of us on 3 reservations. I've never been to the Med but thought Disney would be the best way to do it. I've done the repo through the Panama Canal in May 2005 and a couple of other earlier cruises with DCL. Don't understand all these abbreviations yet that everyone uses, but I guess I will catch on.

Helen - would you mind sharing the book you found on the European Cruise ports? Matt and I went to Barnes and Noble this weekend and couldn't find a book that was the right one for this cruise so we're looking for suggestions.

Oh and we speak only English and I have a little spanish (can order a beer and get to the bathroom :thumbsup2 ) so we'll need to brush up on Italian.

Hi sorry it took a long time to tell you about this book  . It came last week while I was away.

DK (Dorling Kindersley) Eyewitness travel guides
Cruise Guide To Europe and the Med.
Cost £14.99 ( I paid £2.50 on ebay :goodvibes ) published 2001

This book is good but I don't think its worth paying the proper price for it. See if you can find it in the library.
It has info on lots of European countries ( not just Spain, France & Italy)
All of our ports are covered ( usually 2 pages per city) basic map of city, key sights, fact file inc markets, shopping specialities, local food specialities and excursions.

Hope that helps

There has been good advice on flying through London....any info on if it is practical to go through Paris. Not sure if we would, but we are considering staying for a couple of days and visiting DLP.

Different note...my boys are home today and watching HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL...again!!! Funny thing is it really sets the day with a bit of energy and puts them in that whole teamwork mode. I think our kids have watched it at least twice a week since it came out. The school is using at least two songs in our Spring Sing. Funny how this has really made a positive influence in several grades.

if you look back through the thred I posted a link about a train service from Paris to Barcelona, this can be linked with the Channel Tunnel Service EuroStar from London to Paris.
Flights to barcelona wouldn't go through Paris although obviously you could do London - Paris, Paris - Barcelona, but then you might as well fly into Paris to start with.

I decided to keep in touch with the younger crowd and find out what all the fuss was about so I recorded this tonight. I don't get to rave to the youngin's about Grease if I can't relate to the latest teen musical.

I hope I don't feel too silly watching - but admit it... all of you - you've read all the Harry Potter books yourself. ;)

Good choice on Grease too! We let ours watch this year. It was a riot to listen to my kids singing the entire show...just like I did when I was in eighth grade! Have to admit...I like High School Musical too. It's fun. Actually we have exposed our kids to at least one musical and one black and white on every trip we take. This year they watched Easter Parade! One of their favorites is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

So, what did you think of HSM???

to all you folk debating DLP before or after the cruise a factor I would take into consideration is the British school holiday period, I have no idea when the rest of Europe break for the summer but I'm sure the Brits will add significantly to the crowds after the cruise whereas the week before only a few schools will have already finished.. I don't know if that helps or not, If your kids like theme parks and you want somewhere to go after the cruise you may want to look at PortAdventura which is the European Universal park. It is really near Barcelona to the south on the coast it has it's own water park and if you stay in the resort hotels it's own private beach. We have never been so | don't know if anyone else can review it but it's something we're considering for a bit of fun and relaxation when we get off the ship. Mind you I'm sure the school holidays will mean this is pretty crowded as well.

Funny thng i was just looking at my picutres from DLP last time I visited in October 2005, and there is a photo of my kids at a halloween display set up like a travel agent, and it has various Disney itesms on it.

Part of it is a large picture saying WITCH CRUISE LINE? with a picutre of the Disney Magic and a witch on it? Considering the Med cruises it most likly was telling a story then.

As far as I am aware it is the same owners Uinversal and is on the spainsh coast down from Barcellona. I looked at the rides and a lot are the same.

If planing for shore trips in the Med next year celebrity has a site with many of the ports of call on it. Lots of options and costly private tours.

Thank you for this info. I think this will probably be our only opportunity to hit DLP. Anyways, we're used to crowds, we've go to Disneyland a lot, and there have been tons of people for the 50th anniversary

Thanks so much for this link. I started looking at sites yesterday, and there's a lot of info. I wanted to get something "clean".

Also, note that I am capturing these links and adding them to the Excel list that is on JoAnn's first post.

Also, I have a powerpoint uploaded that shows cabins that has DISers - but I didn't put the names with the cabins. Not sure if people would want to have that.

Maybe people who want to be on the powerpoint showing their cabin, but don't want their number publicized on the Excel list can let me know via pm? Note that it takes awhile for the powerpoint to show right now because it's graphic intensive.

I grabbed two books on mediterranean cruising and I thought I 'd give some reviews coming from a DCL in the Med standpoint. I've had a chance to review the first one of them for ya:

Frommmer's European Cruises & Ports of Call 4th Edition
Golden & Brown

This book is written as a jumping off point for someone who knows only one thing: "I'd like to cruise in Europe." Since we are cruising the Western Med the title already indicates that the book's scope is going to be a bit broad. Much of the information pertains to cruises to the Eastern Med and even as far north to Finland and Russia

The book is basically text with greyscale maps of ports and cities. The ship reviews have a thumbnail photo of the ship but nothing else graphically. The book is also filled with phone numbers and web addresses for easy reference.

The guide starts off with a basic overview of cuising life and answers many questions about what to expect when onboard. The book then provides some information about what to expect while shopping for cruises. The bulk of the book (about half) is a guide that rates and describes all the cruise lines and ships that sail both offshore and inshore in Europe. (River cruising is included) Since everyone's here because we've thrown our lot in with the Mouse this makes about 2/3rds of the book unneeded info. The earliest parts of the book (about 25 pages) seem to be "Best of..." lists that might be handy for getting a very quick look at what a particular port or cruise line might be known for but good for little after that.

The final 1/3 of the book (about 130 pages) is the reviews of the cruise ports and tourist areas that are served by the ships. At their best, these reviews talk about the local basics like language and currency, a section on expected cruise line excursions, a guide to things to do on your own, and perhaps a good place or two to eat. Almost all these come with phone numbers or web addresses for info and reservations. The down side for DCL cruisers is that only Barcelona and Rome are covered in detail over about 7 pages. There is little to no info about the other DCL ports.

For the experienced DCL traveller I would recommend looking elsewhere or perhaps a trip to the library with a pen and a piece of paper to write down the 3 lines of notes you might take away.

I finally went to look at our cabin numbers. We have cabins 6521 and 6522. Dining says Main. I have read on boards that some say 6 pm which is what we would prefer. I wonder if we should call back and specifically request 6 pm (I thought we did that though).

Insight Guides : Mediterranean Cruises 2005

380 pages, I call this out because you only really need ~ 40 pages.

Do not need any of the info on selecting a cruise, or life on board. Disney Passporter covers all you need there.

I found it really hard to find much of interest in their information.

Barcelona

7 pages
Siesta goes until 5, so stores are closed most of the afternoon
Palermo

4 pages
Suggest visiting Duomo cathedral, and for the bizarre, a visit to the Capuchin Catacombs which “Displays the unique the embalming skills of the Capuchin monks”
Cefalu – 38 miles from Palermo, “only practical if you hire a car”
Naples

2 pages, call out only 4 sights to see
“On cruise itineraries due to its location rather than its own attractions”….”enable passengers to choose from a variety of shore excursions”
Major archeological site of Pompeii & Herculaneum. Pompeii is a 30 minute train trip
Capri – 45 minutes by hydrofoil
Olbia

¼ page -“uninspiring port”
Classic shore excursion is to Porto Cervo – “ a beguiling tourist trap,….a celebrity haunt… bewitching turquoise seascapes”
Citavecchia

Only 5 pages for Rome?
1 page for Vatican
They suggest taking train to Rome rather than cruise excursion, 50-75 minutes, Buy tickets on train. Morning – 2 trains/hour
Shops close from 1-4 for siesta
La Spezia

Not covered, although Florence & Pisa have 2 pages combined
Marseilles

4 pages
Cruise terminal is ~ 20 minutes from “old port”
Villafranche

Villefranche – 1 page, mainly telling how to get to Nice or Monte Carlo, although they call it “a small, relatively uncrowded town with plenty of Gallic charm, but no major historical attractions.”

Tenders to port, which often need to wait 10-15 minutes to dock.
Taxis outside terminal
Main Bus – 20 minute uphill walk
Mini-bus – outside terminal, but less frequent
Train – 10 minute walk, suggested transportation method

Nice– 2 pages – 7 minutes by train from port

Perfume is suggested shopping experience
Mondays Coers Saleya has an antiques market
They suggest several museums to visit

Monte Carlo – 3 pages – 20 minutes by train

If visiting Grand Casino – they have a dress code and you need to show your passport if you want to play
The Grand Casino costs $$$... errr... Euros to move through to more exclusive gaming rooms.

Some key insights I learned from Travel tips section at the end of the book.

All the countries we visit share the Euro currency
Italy

Prefer cash to credit cards except for large purchases.
Shopkeepers will not change money, so have Euros on hand.
Beware of pickpockets.
Service charge of 15% is usually added to restaurant bills, and additional tipping of waiter is expected.

France

Credit cards widely accepted, but not always Amex
10% tip automatically added to restaurant bills “service compris” Taxis also add this fee, but appreciate extra.
Beware of pickpockets in Nice, and always do not flash cash.

Spain

If staying in Barcelona, advisable to book “well in advance”. A well-respected agency for bed & breakfasts is www.bcnrooms.com (http://www.bcnrooms.com).
Tipping not included in bills. 10% tip suggested unless bill marked as “servicio includo”. €0.20 tip for a typical taxi ride.
ATMS easiest ways to get cash

From my time with the book I must say that it is quite the visual tome. Pictures compromise the majority of page space in the book. It tries to convey a feeling of a Discovery Channel travel show. (since Discover Channel is the publisher - duh!)

Very pretty to look at and certainly capable of getting you dreaming about the cruise. If you're looking for detailed info then you 'll need to look elsewhere.

I just checked my reservations and the guest info on each of the cruises I have booked has the wrong address :scared1: although they have the correct post code! :confused3 Needless to say I have just been on the phone to DVC - they said that on their screen all they can see is the correct address but they will contact DCL.

Congrats AnnaS!!!

It is so exciting to see our children excel and succeed! Don't forget to revel in their success. If you didn't get them to practice...they wouldn't have that success!!! Also, how was your confirmation. Our DD was confirmed in November and it was emotional. There is quite a bit of turmoil in our area regarding confirmation. Our Bishop has decided that rather than hitting each parish each year, we will have one ceremony every four years at our civic center...not even the cathedral!!! One rumor has us traveling on the off years. Very frustrating...I still have to get two more confirmed! UGH!!!

Anyway...Congrats!

tomspixie -- what a message for our youth not to join the church. We had our confirmation last Saturday & had a great Bishop - he was so funny. My dd was dropped from the program because she missed one meeting on a Saturday - called Super Saturday. I just got a couple of travel books yesterday. Haven't had a chance to review other than to flip through them real quick:

Rick Steve's Rome 2006 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566917328/002-7205102-3795255?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155)- if you want detailed information about Rome, this book seems to have it all. It has information about several tours (Colosseum, Forum, National Museum tours and so on) explaining what you will see and giving hand drawn maps. It includes things like: Pickpocket alerts and how they will distract you while they steal your goods, where to buy tickets to avoid the lines, what tickets to buy if you are going to see several things, how to get to places, where to eat, sleep etc. Seems very comprehensive and something that you probably will want to carry with you.

Mediterranean By Cruise Ship: The Complete Guide to Mediterranean Cruising by Anne Vipond (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0968838936/002-7205102-3795255?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) - again I didn't spend alot of time looking at it yet. It has lots of color pictures, only about 2-5 pages per port, broad information, heavy book so you definitely want to take notes on this one to carry around. Covers Greece (where I want to go someday).

I will report back when I read more. :surfweb:

Rick Steve's Rome 2006 is excellent! On a recent trip to Italy we carried it with us everywhere. The museum tours help you see the highlights with great commentary on what you are looking at. We also visited Paris with Rick Steven's Paris 2006, and while at Versille, another vcouple was touring with Rick's book in their hand. They said it was the only to travel.
A few years ago I was on a Med cruise care of the US Navy and visited Naples. The city itself wasn't much, but Pompai, Sorrento, the Amalfi coast, and Rome were great. At the Vatican there is a Vatican Museum tour including the Cistene Chapel, but usually not St. Peters. There is no charge to visit St. Peters and Rick Steven's book had some good info on each. On Weds. mornings, addresses the crowds in front of St. Peters, it lasts several hours and ends with the Papal blessing. A couple we met went to Capri and said it is beautiful. Alex

Awesome work Kayla and Firsttimers!

I've got another book report for you folks:

Birnbaum's Disney Cruise Line 2006

From the 'Duh' column. :teeth:

Interesting that it starts off with the astute observation that if you have the book you must be getting ready to take a Disney cruise. Well that's obvious enough.

The book is half cruise info and half port info. Since there was no info about the Med ports at the time the book was written it's obviously not going to be much help there. So on to the rest of the book about the cruise and the ship.

Since its a Birnbaum's book, this is most certainly less than unbiased. Any slighly negative statements are left for the port excursions.

After the usual "Rah Rah" section to get you in a Disney mood. You go through a good section of hints about how to book your cruise and chose your booking options like dinner, insurance, and cabins. It's done in such short segments that it reminds me of the typical Q&A threads here on the DISBoards. (the tecqnique found throughout the book.) The info is quite solid and sets a good foundation for a new cruiser.

In the sections dedicated to onboard life you get an excellent overview of all the typical activities and facilities. In its short thumbnail format it quickly goes through most of the features to whet your appetite for more info. You certainly get a fun introduction to the unusual aspects of Disney cruising. The guide also spends some time addressing more of the common DISBoard questions like character meets, formal wear, where do the kids go, and what can I do once the kids are out of my hair. You wanna make a phone call or play on the internet, need a real refrigerator? Lots of answers for you. It's a big Q&A session with DCL. With all the options available, each is quickly mentioned and you move off to the next little information blurb.

There's lots of cartoons, small pictures, maps, and sidebars to add flavor to the book. However, with all these graphics there's a strange missing feature - no deck maps?

If you been on a DCL cruise before you've probably heard all this before but you'd be surprised what you might learn. If you've new and not been paying 20 hours a week here on the DISBoards then you might pick this up for a fun read. You may find yourself full of new questions to ask. Just remember to keep in mind that these Birnbaum books are more like Disney travel brochures than neutral reviews. http://www.informanews.net/IPBforum/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif

AJ Great job!!! I have to say that I did pick up the Rick Steve books today. Even added the little translation books!! Haven't gotten through them yet!!

I also picked up a CD with Italien translation. Had a quick meeting with a couple teachers right after school. Abby grabbed my keys and just sat in the car with it on. When I got out to the car I had 6 kids cracking up.
"Skoosie mom, skoosie." "Gratzi" Spelling phonetically....sort of! Anyway, they were so funny saying it was really weird. We will take it slow and simply see if we can get it into our subconciousness!!! If we make any headway, I shall let you know!!!

See ya! :tink:

Here we have Ben comtemplating the new sport of 'flysteak' because chomping on the ball just isn't worth the work of a champion such as himself. :rotfl2:

Additional silly Bob caption: "I win and you're the one going to DisneyWorld?" :rotfl:

Lord it's late and I'm punchy.

I wonder how full this cruise is?? :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

I went into www.disneycruise.com and our cruise is the same price it was the first day we booked. I thought the prices would skyrocket.....I guess I am kinda glad they didn't.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

MrsJobba1 -- what a beautiful dog you have. :)

Andrew -- I had earlier said that we wanted Palos -- but I'll be taking my two teens, and there'll be three of us.

I've been reading the threads about the different themed nights & am a little leery of missing out by booking Palos dinner. I probably should have asked to join the brunch party, but I guess I'll try when the options open up & see what happens. Can't believe how excited I am, and it's still a year away.

Whoops - sorry about that - I wasn't clear. :)

I meant to say... I had indicated earlier that I wanted to join, but w/my two teens, I wasn't sure, so we wouldn't be included after-all (knowing also, that there are only 2 spots left, and 3 of us)...

Sorry I haven't been on this thread in awhile. The beginning of April, we spent 5 days in WDW. I was home for less than a week and had a fire at my store (I own a scrapbook store). An 11 year old kid set the store on fire (he was caught) so on top of insurance, we have to deal with Family Court. Three days after that I went on an RCCL retailer's cruise. Now I have been back for almost 2 weeks and just waiting on insurance. Can't really do anything at the store until insurance gives the go ahead. There was probably between 30 and 40,000 in damage (structurally and inventory).

Now we are just putting the finishing touches on our DD's Sweet 16, which is next Friday. Crunch time! My other DD (Alex) who is a CM at WDW on the college program was supposed to come home Sunday morning and spend a week home (she is staying for the summer), but surprised us and came home this morning. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc Mom is very happy, so is dad and little sister!

Anna - I was also at GA on the 28th for the Cheerleading competition. What a small world! My daughter cheers for Moore Catholic. Who does your daughter cheer for? I had just got back the night before from the cruise. I was exhausted, but the kids wanted to hang out for awhile and go on the rides. They waited 2 hours for King Da Ka. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Anyway, had to post so you know I am still out here. Also, had to get us off page 2.

Just want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!!!

BTW, we are Cabin 7564, late seating. I think that's the same cabin we stayed in on our Mexican Riviera cruise last year!. I, also cannot get into the spread sheet, it tells me page is not found.

Hi everyone :wave2:

wow - have not received many email notifications....

I see you have also been busy Disneymom13 - Debi - good luck with the insurance process and hope it's a smooth one.

We were also extremely exhausted for GA. My dd had received cofirmation the day before - we had a late night. We had to do hair at someone's house at 6 am. We also stayed for rides. We got home at 8 pm. I could barely keep my eyes open and stay upright, lol. She cheers for Our Lady Queen of Peace. I guess you do the whole routine too, CSI and then Fordham. It's a full time job.

I am going to try the spreadsheet again. Last time I was able to see the cabins and the ones we have all booked are squared off/highlighted.

We are the family traveling with 30 others. Please pray for one in our group whose mom was going to be on the MED cruise with us. Her mom found out 1 week ago Monday she had cancer and had 2-6 months to live. She passed away Wednesday 9 days after finding out. So we sadly regret our group will be one less. Her name is Dorthea. We will certainly miss her.
