Since I am pretty computer illiterate and cannot post a poll (especially one like this), I am volunteering to "do things the old-fashioned way" and manually tabulate the results of this one. In reference to Daitcher's controversial thread, I am asking everyone to please rank the DVC resorts in order from your favorite to your least favorite. I will periodically post the results, and we can compare this to the # of available rooms in the system.

I don't mean to ignore HH or VB, but for the sake of this poll...please only consider on-site DVC's (B3....no playing around on this one pirate: ).

To tabulate this, I am going to assign 5pts to each 1st resort, 4 for each 2nd, etc. This way, I can keep "cumulative" ranks.

I'll start:

1) BCV
2) VWL
3) BWV
4) OKW
5) SSR

I personally have never stayed at BCV, VWL or BW. However, I listed them in order that I would take. I would love to get to Stormalong Bay. Please keep in mind that I would be happy no matter where I was at as long as I am at Disney. I ranked the BW last because of the clown pool. My daughter is petrified of clowns, so that was my influence. Otherwise the location of BW sounds great to me.

the two above are really neck and neck, but we do love storm along bay. We figure we can always stay at BCV and take the 5 min walk to the BW, but we can't stay at BW and use SAB (even though DVC lied to us when we bought and said we could pool hop, but that is another story)

#3VWL

#4 OKW (must admit we have never stayed there as "our" home, but have stayed with friends who invited us

#5 SSR, never stayed there but sat in on a sales pitch.

*just did a add on at HH. For those of you who haven't tried it, give it a shot. The evenings in Shelter Cove are very nice. A glass of wine, some good food, the sounds of live music, a warm ocean breeze, the smell of dead fish......

:wave2: Point of order-- I thought at first as a newbie I couldn't participate in this poll as I haven't stayed at all of them but I suspect most haven't actually, right? I know a lot of the SSR dissenters haven't stayed there. So just to be clear, we're basing our opinions and rankings on the information available to each of us... whether it be stays, tours, visits, virtual tours, internet pix and stuff we've read, right?

on edit: I see that is indeed how it is playing out so I will vote accordingly.

Yes, you are correct....if you haven't stayed at all of them, please put them in where you think they would go (i.e. if you are a "condo" person, you might like OKW and SSR best even if you haven't stayed at both of them). I don't mean to imply that your "best guess" is written in stone. I really am just trying to get a "general idea" here.

Also, please let's not have this turn into a "debate" thread (and, this is not regarding ANY previous posters on this thread...I just forgot to mention it in my original post).

And, most of all....THANKS for posting on this!!!

My numbers are pretty meaningless. I definitely could not settle on one resort I'd always want to stay at-- if I ever had to do that I'd sell. I truly want different things for different trips. My instinct is to pick BWV #1 because I really enjoy it and the theming but there are some lame aspects too, like the lack of dedicated two bedrooms. Right now the resort I most want to visit is VWL because I've always wanted to stay at the WL, as long as I've been planning WDW vacations I've wanted to stay there, but it would be silly to rank that first, I've never even seen it and I've heard some talk of the drawbacks of that resort. SSR of course I've been for a short trip and enjoyed thoroughly and I love for it's relaxing atmosphere and beautiful rooms. BCV seems perfectly lovely, although a few things make me wary, like the location in the resorts, and SAB seems like both a blessing and a curse in many ways. OKW I have never really had the desire to try, although the reviews here have convinced me I should.

So my list which could change at any second, and is based on nothing but the whims of the moment is

1) BWV
2) WLV
3) SSR
4) BCV
5) OKW

But in reality... I 'm going to love trying BCV or OKW... so ranking them as the least favorites is meaningless.

I guess I really must infuriate the proponents of BWYWTS because I just won't settle on one favorite resort for 48 years. I can't imagine having one. Different resorts meet different needs. For a large family trip or when our family wants a relaxing trip, we will stay at our SSR home. My dd wants to try SAB so we'll do that for a non-winter trip when we expect to swim. Next winter trip we're trying VWL. When we're low on points we'll do OKW. Frankly I think as more resorts get built you'll find more and more owners like me, who buy into the program because of the ability to choose from many different resorts. I think this will be just as true of VCR owners as it is today of SSR owners. The DVC program with all its choices is much more attractive to folks like me then it was a few years ago then when there were just two onsites to choose from. Of course it would be foolish to buy somewhere you would hate staying, you should certainly like your home resort enough to stay there if you can't trade out.

So this confirms B3's worst fears, but for my personal position, my desire to try different resorts has nothing to do with SSR, which I like very much-- I would want to try different resort if any of the above five were my home resort.

The only current resort besides SSR I am considering add-on for is BWV, because I would love to have the 11-month window on standard view rooms. I'm a cheapskate.

But I guess you didn't ask for my life story, just my votes :rotfl2:

dh and i have lived at or vacationed at the jersey shore for all of our long lives and have outgrown our youthful enthusiasm for the hussle and bustle of beach and boardwalk environments...if we forget that feeling, we are but a forty minute drive from same and can quickly remember how much we have grown to enjoy a more peaceful retreat...bcv and bwv have done very well to recreate the beach and boardwalk we so used to love.

we also own a vacation home in maine, so the vwl theme is right up our alley! and we so enjoy the tropical theme of okw - our favorite place to get out of the snow! and as far as ssr is concerned, we love the sophisticated theme and environment of that resort! we do not live far from a major n.j. race track, and i have volunteered with their charity committee - so the horsey set is very familiar to us.

but i guess i really don't hafta 'splain why i rank the resorts as i have! :goodvibes

Okay, I have tallied the votes (thru Susanwashere)...that is 24 respondents (hardly a consensus, I know).

I gave a resort 5 points for 1st, 4pts for 2nd, 3pts for 3rd, 2pts for 4th, and 1 pt. for 5th. If an owner posted a "tie" for a place, I divided the total # of points for those two "places" by two (ex: a tie for first and second means each resort gets 4.5 points).

Here's the results:

1) BCV with 90.5 points (25.14% of available points)
2) BWV with 82 points (22.78% of available points)
3) OKW with 70 points (19.44% of available points)
4) VWL with 60.5 points (16.81% of available points)
5) SSR with 56 points (15.56% of available points)

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their first choice:

1) BCV - 10 people (41.67%) for a resort that is 10% of the available rooms
2) OKW - 6 people (25%) for a resort that is 25.5% of the available rooms
3) BWV - 5 people (20.83%) for a resort that is 18.4% of the available rooms
4) SSR - 3 people (12.5%) for a resort that is 39% of the available rooms
5) VWL - 1 person (4.17%) for a resort that is 6.5% of the available rooms

I will keep tallying as long as people post. I'll do it once more before I go to bed.

Actually, you are skewing your results by using the maximum percentage for SSR- which is not even completely built yet and is not sold out. the percentage owned at this time is nowhere near 40% - probably closer to 20% right now.

At this time SSR has 552 villas completed and not all are even in the DVC inventory. The 828 you are using will include the 6 buildings still under construction (due to open in 2007) - let alone purchased for membership.

The numbers will also change when you use the maximum villas available at each resort, since each has a variance based on the number of lock-offs and how those are reserved thru DVC.

In addition, the owners at VB and HH do play a role since points are used at those resorts by non-owners and those owners also stay at the onsite resorts. The percentages are not very easy to use in this manner since there are so many permutations based on how the resorts are actually used by members- and even that varies from day-to-day.

Good points!!!

I don't want to include VB and HH for reasons I explained above.

However...I think I should do some "adjustments" on the SSR numbers. But, now the question becomes how? I will accept your number of 552 villas. I don't think we should drop that number any lower because DVC sells villas which are not completed, and adds people to the system (those are the "can't close until" people at SSR...they're owners..they often post here, but they cannot take a trip "home" until their unit is completed).

I've got to get dinner for my dd. I will "re-work" the numbers based on SSR being "currently" only 552 units. If anyone objects to this number, please post and we can "duke it out". ;)

2) OKW -10 people (24.39%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms

Actually, DVC won't close on any villa not yet completed. (That was the reason for the staggered reservations once SSR did open.) At this point there are 552 units open - but not all have been declared into inventory and most definitely not all have been sold. The maximum currently available for SSR is 840 units, but unless you include the max at all resorts, you shouldn't use that figure- although it certainly does play a role in the occupancy at each resort.

As I said earlier, I doubt that SSR is much more than 20% of the total current membership for onsite resorts at this moment. You'll need to decide what numbers you want to make up and use to get any conclusions for this poll. The sold out resorts are a bit easier, since we know that the resorts are sold out except for the 2-4% held by DVC and even that figure will affect the number of rooms in the system. 4% of the 531 villas at OKW is a much larger number of villas than 2% at VWL- thus affecting your assumptions even more. Unless you know the specific % still owned by DVC at each resort, the numbers will create significant variance in the outcome you report. I'd expect that OKW still has the greatest number of owners by % for the onsite resorts and BWV may still be second- even above SSR.

These polls are tough enough to do without incorporating unknowns and variables into the equation and still come up with any meaningful conclusions.

Good luck!

beca I know you are going to ALOT of work, but I don't really think the #'s you are posting agree with the threads i read here.

The threads i read are saying that people are wait listing and asking if they can get into bwv and bcv at 7 mths. I have yet to see a single post saying they are "hoping" they are able to somehow get into SSR.

Yet your numbers show (based on what people posted in your thread), that SSR is quite popular and people are booking stays there at the same rate they are other resorts.

I know your numbers are based upon the replies to your poll, but I don't think you have gotten answeres to your poll that reflect what is actualy happening at the resorts.

Pick up the phone monday and try to book a week in a a room for 7 days in July. I think you will find results that don't match the numbers you are being told.

SSR owners "love" SSR, but for what ever reason seem to be staying else where, atleast if you read the current threads on the board.

One reason people can get SSR without any waitlist involved is because it's still in a sales mode. They always declare inventory into DVC BEFORE it's sold. (As long as sales don't outpace construction. In the case of SSR, construction caught up with sales probably last summer.) So until it's sold out, there will always be more inventory than owners.
This has happened with all new resorts in the past. It has always been easy to get into a new resort while it was still selling!

B3 and Doc...once again, you both make excellent points. The problem is:

1) I don't know how to make the poll any more accurate (if someone has any ideas, please post and I will try to do it)

2) There could be even more "unseen" permutations. The poll should probably take into account who owns at what resort.

As far as where SSR owners are actually booking, your experiences definitely mirror my own. I don't know who is booking where, all I know is that I could not get into BCV without owning there...not even once. :confused3 I'm not saying it is SSR owners...heck, I got on the waitlist for a night at 9 1/2 months out...that is definitely BCV owners!!! But, I agree....when I waitlisted at BCV, I could get VWL, OKW, or SSR without waiting.

There is no way to know "definitively", but I thought it would be interesting to get people's perceptions.

So, I caveat the poll with this. If you think my SSR numbers are really off...please just ignore my percentages. The number of points, and rankings will still be accurate as far as this board is concerned.

I'll start:

1) BCV
2) VWL
3) BWV
4) OKW
5) SSR

TIA,

Good job Beca - some people seem to have added more to your poll than I read into it. I thought you were asking for people's favorites in order not where they actually book - two entirely different things - and not always based on availability. The numbers therefore will not match what actually happend in the world of reservations or am I oversimplifying since I apparently missed the thread you were referring to?
Happy tabulating

I haven't read the whole thread, so its probably already been pointed out. I would guess that SSR is not even 50% sold out yet. But if you go with 50% of its capacity, then you would have to use 20% for the available units.

Also, once SSR is completed the poll results would change again since 40% of the owners will be SSR owners.

Great job and effort on your part! :thumbsup2

I'll add, we've never stayed at BCV or SSR so this may be why they're at the bottom of my list. After a stay at these resorts, the order could switch with BWV, but I'm pretty sure OKW and VWL will remain my top 2 desired destinations.

Beca says : I don't know who is booking where, all I know is that I could not get into BCV without owning there...not even once.
Beca,
Though we chose not to stay at BCV, we were able to secure close to a week (5 nights) at BCV in 2005 (this was 1st week of August at 6 months out). Would have had to waitlist for 2 days. Because these 2 days were in the middle of the stay, we chose not to. My kids wanted to try out SAB and that's why I asked about availability there.
In 2003, was able to get a week (late July into early August) at BCV. Would have had to wait list for the last day. Didn't want to take that chance of having to move for one night on the last day so we went with BWV that year which had full availability (PV only). This call was made at about 50 days out ! I called in early June for July/Aug availability.
I do agree, as more contracts are sold at SSR, this may not be so easy, but so far we've had no trouble at all for the summer months. Now the during the fall I can see it being more difficult. We even had to waitlist for OKW in 2004 around F&W and it never came through.

I have stayed at all 5. I have to agree with the previous poster that it depends upon the time of year, purpose of the trip and traveling companions as to the order on any given visit.. BCV is my favorite at New Years and also for the Flower and Garden Festival, BWV is my favorite for F&W when I have to stay over a weekend (love those std view rooms), VWL is my favorite in early Dec, SSR is my favorite when they have events such as the Minnie Marathon in May (and the grand opening)... OKW has such large sized rooms and the points are so reasonable!.... :confused3

Hard to say, my money says that the first wave of SSR owners were existing members looking to add points. Not many of those are interested in staying at SSR. I think the first poll indicates that. The second wave is a mix of older and new DVC members. It seems that half of them will stay there at SSR. I think the current poll also reflects that. The last phases of SSR will probably be made up of new DVC members. They are probably younger, like the extra 12 years, and SSR will be their first home . These members will probably be the most loyal to SSR. I expect to see a poll in late 2007 that will indicate that too.

#4 SSR - haven't stayed there yet put most likely will in the next couple of years

Once again, we are talking about those "numbers". Webmaster Doc posted yesterday that DVC says SSr "75% complete". No one is still sure how many units are "available" or "sold"....we are talking here about 3 different numbers which DVC will not release. Since SSR has been selling for 2yr, 8 months, I doubt the number of units open is 20%, I think it is much higher. Also, remember DVC considers folks "in the system" when they buy, not close. And, since a lot of SSR people are brand new (have not even taken their first trip "home" yet), they probably add a lot more people into the system.

This is why I "refigured" this poll to to show the SSR totals much lower...552 units instead of the completed 828. I said yesterday, if you do not like my "figuring", just ignore the percentages. The raw numbers are the same. And, even in its "uncompleted" state, I am sure SSR already has more members than BCV and VWL combined, so the polls should be able to detect a strong SSR following. BCV has a substantial following (on the polls), but does not really have that many members. This holds true even if you ignore the percentages.

I'm sure his 1st choice would be VWL, and likely his 2nd choice BWV.

-- No idea about the rest! :teeth:

I put in my earlier post where I voted; that Granny came to me in a dream and told me to tell Beca that he voted VWL #1. He didn't mention the BWV as #2, but that sounds about right :thumbsup2 .

Since I have 15 points to play with, here's how I would assign them since I have a 3-way tie for 1st place:

BWV, VWL, OKW - 4 points each
BCV - 2 points
SSR - 1 point

I was gone from the boards for about a month (work related), and when I returned I read a post from Granny saying he must leave the boards for a while.
I'm not sure of the details, but he said he will be renting his points in the near term in order to avoid selling.

He is truly a quality person, and he is missed. :(

Hi, Beca!
Have yet to stay at BCV and am afraid to do so because I don't want to end up selling all of my points and buying new ones like someone I know!
Also, have toured SSR but not stayed there. For what it's worth, here are my priorities as of this minute:
BWV (Love the activity and BW view)
OKW (Love the room size and parking)
BCV (Beca loves it so it must be good!)
VWL (Lovely, but I get enough of dark decor and pine trees in MN)
SSR (OKW without the big rooms and the parking isn't as close)
Based on experience + conjecture.

I'll do one for DH. Since his are different from mine, he should have a separate vote.
1. OKW
2. BCV
3. SSR
4. VWL
5. BWV

Actually, DH wanted to know if he could choose OKW as his #1-#5 choices, all of them, because if he had a choice, he'd really never stay anywhere else.

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their first choice:

1) BCV - 30 people (27.03%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms
2) SSR -23 people (20.91%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
3) OKW - 23 people (20.91%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms

I question the honesty of the votes.

I see SSR getting many votes at the top (almost always from ssr owners), yet I see threads all over the board from ssr owners talking about wanting to stay else where. I don't think I have seen a bcv or bwv owner asking if a ssr waitlist will come thru.

then i see stuff like the following post in the SSR Love thread......

"I own SSR and do not have, nor will I have the desire to stay at either BCV or BWV. I'm sure to others they are lovely and I have never slammed anyone else's "home". However, I will inform you that I live on the southern coast of NC so the theme does not appeal to me. Nor do the linens used at BWV and the clown slide freaks me out. BCV has too much of a "beachy" feel for me. I see the ocean day in and day out and I see the same color schemes around here day after day. Now, after saying this I'll sound crazy, but I do love OKW the reasoning for this is b/c it is tropical. Where I live there are no palm trees so those really appeal to me. The Yacht and Beach club are themes reoccuring in this area."

then i do a search to see how the author voted in this thread and I see

#1 OKW
#2 BWV
#3 BCV
#4 VWL AND bringing up the rear.........
#5 SSR

I think and this is IMO only that what SSR owners "love" about SSR is 12 more years.

I am curious if every resort were put on the market today for the same price, and the same number of contract years, and you COULD NOT stay at other DVC's........... which DVC unit would be the most in demand?

Beca

Okay, this is not an update, but after one pm and several emails from people, I am "caving" and adding information to this poll. The comments I am getting are saying that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices of resorts do not matter...I need to be telling the how many people choice what resort as thier first resort (as I have been doing), but also adding the last resort.

So, here's the new information:

Total votes: 111

Here's the results:

1) BCV with 372 points (22.34% of available points)
2) BWV with 343 points (20.6% of available points)

5) VWL - 15 people (13.64%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their least favorite/last choice:

1) SSR - 38 people (34.23%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
2) OKW -20 people (18.02%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms
3) BWV - 20 people (18.02%) for a resort that is 21.16% of the available rooms
4) VWL - 19 people (17.12%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms
5) BCV - 12 people (10.81%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms

Never stayed at OKW or SSR, but love being close to Epcot and MK. I suspect OKW could move to #3 if we stayed there. Own at BCV, but for some reason just like lots of things about BWV. Stormalong Bay is not as great a draw for us as for others. VWL is very nice, but a bit "dark" for our tastes.

I'm sorry this post is coming right after your's Stitch1404, I have been meaning to say this, but you just reminded me.

I don't understand how people can vote for a resort that they have never stayed at. Personally, had I taken this poll prior to this past December, and not taking into account that I had only stayed at 2 (the first 2 listed) my vote would have been

VWL
OKW
BCV
BWV
SSR

But now (well a few pages ago) I actually voted

VWL
BCV
OKW

and that is all we voted on because we have yet to stay at SSR and BWV.

Both my husband and I stayed at BC a few years ago before it was DVC. We did not like the resort for many many reasons. We had never stayed at BWV, but just do not care for the theming. Yet after staying at BCV this past Dec we love this resort.

In conclusion, how can people vote on an order of preference without actually staying at the resort?

ITA!!! By knowing what your family "likes" and "dislikes". We have not actually stayed at SSR (we have stayed at the other 4 on-site properties), but we toured it (actually the Grand Villas), and spend a couple of hours exploring the property. It just did not do much for us. Granted, it was REALLY warm that day, and walking the resort made us feel like we were walking around an apartment complex in our early marriage years...a feeling we don't want to pay that much to repeat. ;) But, it was easy to see that SSR did not hold any appeal for our family.

I have not stayed at any of the WDW moderates or values...why? When I take my vacation time and money to go to WDW...I like going deluxe all the way. There are some that I might not "mind" too much if the price was right (POR, POFQ, and CB), but then there are others that I would HATE (all the values, and since I lived in Arizona for 11 years...CS...I've had enough of "Mexican" theming). I don't actually have to stay there to know that I don't like them. Although, the food court area at CB is INSANE!!! I don't know if I could really stay at a moderate.

On the opposite end, we were staying at BWV (our first trip "home"), and I was discussing the different resorts with my very sweet friend jekjones1558. I remember saying to her, "I don't think I would like BCV as well as BWV....it doesn't look like it would have great views, and I would rather stay at BWV for the std view pts." Then, one day on that trip...dh and I went and looked at BCV (like we did all resorts), and fell in LOVE!!! I had never "stayed" there, but I just "knew" it was for us....it felt like "home" (albeit, a luxurious one). That's when I came home and sold my points to buy at BCV. Talk about "eating my words"!!!!

Sometimes, when you look at pics, you can know that a place is "for you" or not, and sometimes touring a resort is all you need. Given, the BEST way to know about a resort is to stay there....but, there are many resorts at WDW that I don't want to spend my valuable vacation time to stay at, so I just have to make the best guess possible.

Beca, I'm amazed at the amount of work you're doing! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you-this is really interesting.
Also, has anyone noticed that the #1 resort for the majority of people, and the least favorite of the least number of people (I hope I said that right) is BCV, which seems to me gets the most # of complaints about problems with front desk issues, cleanliness, etc. Is it just me-maybe since it's my #1 resort, I overly sensitive whenever I read a BCV complaint-or does it seem that BCV gets slammed a lot? Yet, it came out here remarkably ahead of everywhere else. That kind of surprised me.

Now, we've only stayed at VWL and have another trip planned at SSR in 6 weeks. BUT, the order I would have my heart set on (and of course this fluctuates depending on what is going on there...MNSSHP, MVMCP, Food and Wine, etc) -

1. VWL - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Wilderness Lodge. Nothing compares to it. Will probably add on points from there through re-sale.

2. BCV - Only because I have feeling we would hang at the pool the entire week.

3. SSR - Home Resort.

4. OKW

5. BWV

We do hope in the future to stay at all of them. I am certain with time, we will.

Becca,

Thanks for doing this, I know it's a lot of work.

1) BWV - It's our Home Resort. Love the atmosphere, location and std points!

2) BCV - Again love the atmosphere, location and SAB!

3) OKW - Haven't stayed here yet. But I've always thought it looked lovely. Staying here in July.

4) VWL - Have only stayed in the lodge, not the villas. But I liked it too.

5) SSR - Haven't stayed here yet. But I think it looks nice, too. I stayed here before it was SSR.

It was hard to place the last three, because they are all nice but in different ways.

Interesting. I'm suprised BCV is so highly rated. We like it but wouldn't have thought so many would have (especially given the posts!).

Another point. It looks like VWL does have a love/hate thing going on like MG was saying. It has double the number of people wanting it first over the number of rooms while it also has double the number of people wanting it last.

I first looked at DVC when BCV was first being sold. I passed on it then. I looked again a couple years later; again I passed on it. SSR opened up, I bought some points. Suppose you have never been to Hawaii or Timbuktu, can you state a preference for where you'd rather go? I would say yes, you can state a preference without staying at the resort. There is a difference between preferences where you would like to go versus preferences of places that you have been.

Well, there have only been two posts today, so my guess is that this poll has "run its course"...which is actually really good for me because I leave for WDW early Friday morning. However, in the interest of including everyone, I have re-done the stats.

I hope this poll has been as informative for all of you as it has for me. I would like to thank everyone for keeping this thread non-controversial while I was tallying, and allowing it to continue.

At this point, I would love to hear EVERYONE'S interpretation of what the numbers mean. If you don't want to see others' interpretations...I totally understand and respect that...but, please don't discourage others from posting. We do a lot "discussing" on the boards about "buy where you want to stay" vs. not, the importance of the 7 month window, and where people are booking & what resort/resort style people prefer. However, we have never had even an "inkling" of stats other than our "gut feelings" based on what happens when we call MS, or read posts here. I know these answers are based on what people say, not what people book...but, I seriously don't know if there is a way to get more accurate. So, maybe in the big picture, these stats mean nothing...but, I had to try.

I will ask that people be "respectful" of others as they post, but also remind everyone not to take posts on the dis too seriously....this is not "work"...this is fun!!! (or, at least...it is supposed to be). And, I am hoping for some serious insights on interpretation.

So, here's the new information:

Total votes: 130

Here's the results:

1) BCV with 445 points (22.82% of available points)
2) BWV with 417 points (21.38% of available points)
3) OKW with 379 points (19.44% of available points)
4) VWL with 375.5 points (19.26% of available points)
5) SSR with 329.5 points (16.9% of available points)

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their first choice:

1) BCV - 35 people (26.92%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms
2) BWV -29 people (22.31%) for a resort that is 21.16% of the available rooms
3) OKW - 25 people (19.23%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms
4) SSR - 25 people (19.23%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
5) VWL - 16 people (12.31%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their least favorite/last choice:

1) SSR - 50 people (38.46%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
2) OKW -24 people (18.46%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms
3) BWV - 23 people (17.69%) for a resort that is 21.16% of the available rooms
4) VWL - 19 people (14.62%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms
5) BCV - 12 people (9.23%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms

I will not be available to see the "discourse" on this (or any other thread) because I am leaving for WDW   ...but, I look fwd to seeing this when I get back...and, I am warning you....I don't want to see a "CLOSED" thread (but, fading away quietly into oblivion would be okay).

So, before I go...here's my thoughts on the "numbers".

1) I am surprised at how BCV stayed at the top of the pack consistently. I knew it was popular, but I expected to see all the resorts "shift" during the thread. This is especially true since BCV seems to take more "beatings" than VWL or BWV.

2) I am also surprised that, as the number of posters grew, the points did not change too much (I guess what they say in stats is pretty true). Once every resort "settled" it didn't change too much. I think this gives validity to the poll, and I wouldn't expect to see the numbers change too much even if there were a lot more posters.

3) I don't know that the "buy where you want to stay" policy is one that holds true for every resort. Based on the numbers above,BCV and VWL are "over popular" for their size. BWV is about right for its size, and OKW and SSR are "under popular" for their size. While this reinforces my idea that no resort should be too big (one resort cannot appeal to tons of people), I am inclined to believe that booking inside the 7 month window might not be too difficult at these resorts. IMO, the best policy might be, "If you will mainly want to stay at BCV or VWL, buy where you want to stay. If you want to stay mainly at OKW or SSR, you might want to buy SSR for the extra 12 years." BWV is a "special case" because of the BW and std view rooms...if you want to stay in those rooms, you will need to buy where you want to stay.

I think for me, the poll re-emphasized that I need to view my DVC as something that is for "long-term" planning. I will also consider myself VERY lucky to get into VWL when I do. If I didn't have a weird obsession with BCV...I would seriously consider adding-on there.

In the end, I really don't think the concern should be "how popular" or "unpopular" a resort is...but, rather how popular that resort is in relation to its size. BCV is the first choice for 25% of the posters....if that number was speaking about SSR, OKW or BWV...there would be no problem...that number, while being a little low for SSR, would be almost perfect for OKW or BWV...but, that particular number can (and is) causing trouble for BCV, and would disasterous for VWL.

Just my thoughts, and I hope I didn't offend anyone.....I would love to hear yours!!!

Thanx for all your hard work, Beca. :)

Here are a couple of my thoughts on the numbers:

1) There can be many different components to a favorite resort. Some people like restaurant choices, some like pools, some like an Epcot location, and others like theming. Some take all these factors into consideration, but put more emphasis on certain ones.
For exmaple: Someone could love the restaurants and theming at VWL, and dislike the restaurants and theming at BWV. Because an Epcot location is of paramount importance for that person, both BWV and BCV may come out ahead of VWL.

2) I know it's nearly impossible to say for certain, but I would bet there is some home team voting going on. The larger the resort, the higher the likelyhood of top votes.
Now, you could say everyone bought their favorite resort, but in reality that doesn't always happen. I would bet what does happen, is folks buy then acquire an emotional attachment to the resort.
You can somewhat normalize this by looking at your percentage of rooms available, and extrapolate from there.

3) I think BWV and BCV have a small advantage simply from their high traffic location (different than Epcot location).
I mean, how often do Members go to visit the Iron Spike Room? How many Members have heard the haunting music, or even know that Walt's small train is on display there?

Anyway, very nice job!
After proof reading my comments it appears that I'm making excuses for my beloved VWL. That's really not the case. It honestly doesn't bother me if others don't care for my resort as much as other resorts.

I will say two more things-

-- As I said after my vote, VWL may not appeal to the masses, but those of us who love it, have an extremely strong passion for it. I believe stronger than most other Members have for their #1 resort.

-- Just because I had to rate resorts in the 4 and 5 position, doesn't mean I dislike them. I do like all the resorts for different reasons and would be thrilled to stay in any of them.

Thanx again for the interesting poll! :smokin:

[QUOTE=Jen D

But I guess you didn't ask for my life story, just my votes :rotfl2:[/QUOTE]

I'm with you JenD! I wouldn't consider any of them bad! I want to stay at all of them, and not be tied down to any one! I would be ever so happy to be "stuck" at any of the DVC resorts! :woohoo:
It really would depend on where we planning on hanging out while we are there. Sometimes, it is more Epcot & MGM and other times more MK & AK! We always split our stay when we go to WDW, but that might change down the road.
Here goes......

#1 BWV (This one's for you B3! :rotfl: Love the scary clown slide! :teeth: )
#2 SSR Love the decor and I'm dying to try that spa!
#3 OKW Love it! Don't really know why, just do! Maybe it's the no valet or
room service! :rotfl: Just kidding!
#4 BCV SAB is pretty fun! ;)
#5 VWL Too much like my home state, but it is very well done! :goodvibes

Like I said before, I don't think there is a bad one in the bunch!

Thanks for your effort and time putting this together!

Thanks Beca

I agree with the two comments above.

I'm not surprised by the results, I think any DVC resort linked to a deluxe hotel will always come out ahead of the standalone DVC resorts because they have more to offer (wow factor from the themed hotels, more activities, more onsite dining options, hotel services, etc). Plus BCV and BWV have the extra bonus of location.

Personally, SSR is my first preference. I'll always stay at SSR. However, when I'm traveling with guests to Disney, I plan to split my time at SRR and one of the DVC resorts linked to a deluxe hotel because they offer a different Disney experience in my opinion.

Thanks again !!

Great poll. I've been reading the comments and agree that all the DVC resorts are wonderful just different. We try to stay at different resorts each stay in our effort to be well rounded or just try something different.

Our next trip is in October to Disneyland which I haven't been to for 6 years. We'll see what the Disneyland Resort have to offer compared to the DVC.

Well, there have only been two posts today, so my guess is that this poll has "run its course"...which is actually really good for me because I leave for WDW early Friday morning. However, in the interest of including everyone, I have re-done the stats.

Beca, I think you would get more responses if you were to change your Post subject title so that folks at a glance could see you are taking a poll for this purpose. I almost did not click on it with the current subject heading -- I only did so because I usually like reading your posts.

I guess my husband and I are the only people on these boards who formed an opinion about a resort and then realized that we needed to give it a try, and that we actually loved it. Sorry.... :rolleyes:You're not alone Muushka! DH and I toured WL once (before we were DVC owners) and while we thought it was impressive, we didn't think we would ever want to stay there. We tried VWL in January and loved it so much we added on there!

However, I still think it's OK to vote based on your impressions of a resort, provided you have done your homework (toured there or looked at photos on the web and read some reviews). I think what Beca's poll captures is where people feel they will want to use their points, even if they haven't stayed there yet. That tells us something about the projected demand for each resort.

I took the poll in this spirit: If I called MS to make a reservation, which resort would be my first choice? If it was not available, which would be my second choice? Third choice? and so on. I haven't stayed in all of them and my opinions may change once I do, but as of today, I know the order in which I would check availability for my vacation dates.

This is not so easy because we like different resorts for different reasons and for different times of the year.

BCV- for F&W and Christmas- New Year's Week
OKW- for long summer vacations
VWL- theming
BWV- fun atmosphere
SSR- we haven't stayed here yet

Sorry, I am not the RH that you speak of. Just a long time owner from the days of only one DVC on property and free passes. I did try BWV once and hated it. I guess some of us will never get over having to give up our beloved "DVC" name for OKW". There was something magical about saying, we will be staying at the "Disney Vacation Club" that just doesn't translate well with "Old Key West" --Where's that? In Miami?

I think you might be right but it still wouldn't change my mind.
The DVC has meant so much to me and my family over these past 10 years. 1/2 of the vacation glee comes directly from staying at OKW.
I use trips to other places as a chance to 'experiment' with different hotels/resorts and we visit all of the WDW resorts during vacation at one time or another.
Gues you can't teach an old dog (40 @ WDW in August) new tricks!

Here’s my ranking – Keep in mind we own 180 points and that I’m sure we’d have a great time staying at any of the resorts.

#1 – BWV – Our home resort-love the location and standard points, and it’s the only WDW DVC resort we’ve stayed at.
#2 – OKW – The point requirements are very attractive
#3 – VLW – Would like being close to MK
#4 – BCV – Location’s nice, point requirements not so nice, SAB not my thing.
# 5 – SSR – Point requirement’s are okay, not too crazy about the location, did do a tour and was impressed by the furnishings.

Peace,

Don't know if I'm too late. This is difficult I have two rankings: the first one for favorite resorts for meeting our needs & desires, theming, layout, decor, etc, and the second for favorite for the value ratio of how much we enjoy it per point of cost. The availability of Grand Villas plays heavily into how much we like a particular resort, too, since we usually need a big place, and like having space to spread out.

2. WLV - a very close second, would be happy always staying there
3. Boardwalk Villas

Haven't stayed at either Saratoga or OKW, so cannot state a preference among those, but certain that I would not like them as much as the other three simply because of location. Toured around SSR right after it opened and wasn't too impressed, but part of that could have been the "under construction" feel. I didn't like the fact that that there was no real restaurant and limited take out options. But, now that food options have expanded, I would definitely try SSR.

Visiting Vero Beach for the first time in May..... never been to Hilton Head.

My rankings:

1. VWL-own there, love it, love everything about it, the most beautiful scenery to sit back with a cup of coffee and relax by!
2. BCV-also own here, love that I can walk to Epcot and MGM, like the proximity to the quiet pool and the hot tub, like the smallness of the resort, love the Cape May Cafe, love Beaches N Cream.
3. BWV-only thing I like about this resort is that fact that you can walk to Epcot or MGM, don't like much else about it.
4/5 SSR/OKW tied-love the landscaping at OKW, the most beautiful azaleas in the spring, love the close community feel about it, love the big, airy, cheerful rooms. Haven't stayed at SSR yet, but have toured the resort. The architecture is very pretty, the room furnishings beautiful, seems a little inconvenient to get to a pool or hottub, as does OKW, which is another reason why I love, love, love VWL and BCV.
