AP activation and use question please

Hi, totally new to AP and I am planning a Disney trip next April 21-28. Think I may be able to get AP rates at that time. Can you have the pass already activated so you don't have to hold up everyone in your party? I know we won't be back another time that year to use it again. Also how does it work at the parks? Is it a card you swipe through like the other passes? Thanks for any input.

We bought our AP prior to our trip. At the ticket center they will activate them for you. We had to go there first before entering the parks, it did not take long, and that's it. They will give you a card ticket. We used ours for Fast Pass just like everyone else.
