what does this mean?

I was checking our flights for our upcoming trip and freaked because it said our flight #out of Orlando was an incorrect flight #. I called the airline and sat on hold for about 35 min. The person I talked to was very nice and
explained that our flight # had been changed but the time we leave is the same within minutes. Can anyone tell
me why they would do this? I thought maybe the plane size had changed, but she said our assigned seat #'s
would stay the same. Just curious.

Go to the website and click the flight number. You should be able to tell if the plane size has changed (at least on Delta). Also, click for seating assignment to make sure you have the seats you requested as a precaution.

The airlines have to file their flight numbers and times with ATC in advance. If the departure time has changed in advance, sometimes the flight number will also have changed. Another reason to change a flight number is if they "retire" the flight number. I know this sounds morbid, but when there is a crash, the airlines will no longer use that flight number.

Occasionally the airlines will also add extra flights to accomodate previously cancelled flights. In that case there is a new flight number.
