Does anyone have this sewing/embroidery machine? It is the one with the built in Disney embroidery stitches.

Do you like the machine? How does it work, any problems? Is it easy to thread and operate. It says the embroidery area is 4x4...do you feel this is large enough and can you embroider on large items, like clothing, as long as the image is only 4x4.

I also like to sew and quilt so would want to be able to use the machine for that as well.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! princess:

Do you have a link to this machine? I would like to take a look at it...! TIA! :thumbsup2

This is from the Brother website. It says the MSRP is $999, but they sell the machine at Walmart for about $499. I can't afford one of really expensive machines, so the price is what attracted me to this one (not to mention the Dis embroidery :thumbsup2 )

I don't have this machine, but I did see it on one of the TV shopping websites...for less money. Either HSN or ShopathomeTV.

I have it and love it, love it, love it!! You can use it to sew and quilt. It is an amazing sewing machine- it self threads, and is super easy to use. Compared to my old machine it was like going from driving a lemon to a Cadillac! I make hair bows and use it to personalize with names. I have embroidered shirts with no problem on the medium size ebroidery hoop that the machine comes with, but you can also buy a large and X-large hoop for larger items, or the small hoop for smaller projects. I comes with 25 Disney designs, 50 or so other designs, (holidays, flowers, etc.) 5 fonts, and fancy mongogram letters.
I highly recomend it (if you couldn't tell) Two of my friends have also bought them now too and also love it. I did see the price of $999.99 on the Brother website, But I bought mine from Walmart for $438.00 and have seen it on Ebay for the $300's
Here are a few things I have made with my machine. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to email me :)

Aliisa & Jen - thanks for the feedback on the machine. I am now so excited! You've made up my mind and I got my bonus check at work today, so off to buy I go. :woohoo: I looked on Ebay and there are a few on there. So I may see if I can get a good deal.

Aliisa...thanks for the pictures of the really cute items you've made. Lilah and Luke are pretty cute also :goodvibes

You may have me convinced too! I desperately need a new machine. The only sewing I do is quilting (I entered my first quilt in the Dis World Fair here) but my machine is just too basic. This machine you're talking about sounds like just what I'm looking for. I really think I'd love to embellish all the baby shirts etc too.
Hmmm, dear hubby I have something to add to my Christmas List!

That what my friend asked her husband to get her for for Christmas this past year! Its great too to personalize gifts. I gave monogrammed scarves to all the woman in my family and they loved them. Pillowcase and towels come out super cute too! Just the sewing machine alone is just awesome! And its computerized touch screen which I love. And you aren't just limited to the designs included, you can also add Brother memory cards with different designs to the machine (just like a photo memory stick). But I think the best investment is the computer card. You can plug the card into your computer and download embroidery designs free from the Brother website or you can buy them on ebay for super cheap. Sellers have every kind of font (even Disney!) and every design imaginable.
Sorry I have rambled on and on about this sewing machine LOL! It just so much fun to use- especially if you love Disney :) Enjoy it Ladies!!!

I have to agree with everything Aliisa had to say about the machine. I got mine at Wal Mart when it was on sale. Best investment I ever made. Than for Christmas my in-laws got me the Ultimate Box (the computer software Aliisa was talking about) which has been awesome. I have download so many free images online. including Stitch...

I also gave scarves as gifts this past holiday...the machine comes with other images besides Disney...but the Disney ones are the greatest...
Keep a look out for the brother memory cards with extra Disney images. I got mine from the marvelous creations website. Sometimes he runs a sale and you can get them for around $49 each....I got That's Donald for that price. Check out the brother website for all of the Disney memory cards.

Sorry to keep going on ...but as you can see I LOVE my machine.

ps..tote bags look great also. I made one with Mickey who holds all of my important airport papers when I'm on my way to Disney World.

Do you still love your brother sewing machine a year later?? I've bought it but it hasn't arrived yet. I initially ordered it coz I thought my singer machine was broken...but I managed to fix it and so I don't know if I'll keep the brother. I've read some great reviews on amazon and epinions and then some really awful reviews on sewing.patternreview.com...but I'll be reassured if you still love your SE270D. Got it for just over $400 on the costco website including shipping...figure they have a pretty good return policy if things don't work out...but I so hope it does! I'd love to be able to do some embroidery on my new baby girl's outfit for her first trip to WDW for free dining!

This machine is so different from what I have used before. All the computer stuff. My 16 yr old sat down with me and we took it step by step. I am getting used to it now. I have embroidered some washcloths for my niece's birthday. I found a ton of material at a yard sale last weekend and am looking foward to playing with that. I am very pleased how the machine works. Have fun!

I need to replace my old kenmore, and I am interested in this machine. I would need to do regular sewing/hemming/repair work, but I would love to have something that I could do the embroidery for trip shirts and gifts. Would I be able to use regular thread spools? I read something about the self-threading cassette being difficult to work.

TIA for all info and advice!

Hello there!!
I'm very new to the site! I only found it after doing an extensive search for the large embroidery hoop for the disney 270D machine. I've had mine for over a year and have not had great experiences with it. I'm looking for accessories but my area of the world doesn't seem to offer them. I live in the triad area of NC. I've searched online but haven't located a dealer that offers this hoop.
Any suggestions? I'm also searching for bobbins so I can actually use the machine without having to switch threads on the 2 provided. I've bought and taken back more bobbins than I care to even think about.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions you may have about this machine so I can get enjoyment from using it not frustration!!!

Thank you so much!

I saw the large hoop for this machine on ebay.

Someone else asked about the thread cassette. I had a few problems after using the machine a while and realized that I needed to change my needle. If the needle gets bent, the self-threader won't work. I also used the "large" spool thingy for ALL spools of thread and this worked SO much better.

Love this machine, have made a ton of stuff including a sUPER cute Minnie & Mickey bath towel for my daughter.

Enjoy!

I did find the large hoop online but am still having a hard time finding the correct bobbins. The site I used to get the large hoop is Sew Vac Direct.
I ordered the hoop on Monday and had it by Wed! Now to find the correct bobbins and I'll be in heaven! LOL.
by the way, do you use color thread in your bobbin for the embroidery you do?

Nope, I use white embroidery bobbin thread. I am using the stuff that came with the machine, but I also bought an extra spool at Joann's for when I run out. Good to hear about Sew Vac Direct. I think I came across their site and wasn't sure about buying from them since I didn't know anyone else who had. Let me know if you find the bobbins!

nearaby tomorrow ... they tell me they have the loaded bobbins I need for the machine. If they fit, I'd be more than happy to either give you the store's info or pick up some for you.
My problem is I only got 2 empty bobbins with my machine. Can't recall getting any thread.. so.. haha..
Of course, my mind is a "terrible thing".. haha

Hey all. I just bought the machine on Sunday. It was intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of the thread cassete, it's easy to use.

My question is about the embroidery though -
Are you able to do adult size polo shirts?
Do you have to use the large hoop if you just want a small design over the left breast?

You don't HAVE to use the large hoop, if you want to go out and buy the small hoop. :) There are several Brother hoops, so make sure you get one that fits your machine. They make one just for monogramming stuff.

I don't see why you couldn't do an adult size polo shirt, I've done baby onesies, toddler sized t-shirts, towels, skirts, etc. I'm addicted!! :thumbsup2

According to the manual and the websites I've looked at, the correct stabilizer makes all the difference. Because I quilt and sometimes do applique, I was lucky enough to have the right stabilizer for the first projects that I tried.

For example, a water soluble stabilizer is GREAT for towels (you put it on the front and then embroider), but horrible for t-shirts. For t-shirts, I have found the iron on kind of stabilizer on the back is best. And you really have to be careful not to stretch the tshirt when hooping it.

Then of course, a fresh needle and the right thread are important, too.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I'm not an expert or anything, but I've been having fun! :)

Thank you !!! The ladies at Walmart swore the thread wouldn't matter but I've found it does.. the thread they sold me is so fragile it breaks every time I try to use it.. and the satablizer I have isn't the iron on kind.. I'm not lucky enough to have a fabric store.. only walmart.. I think I'll order embroidery thread and stabilizer online..
I really may take you up on the help.. If nothing else just to get a sense of security! LOL..

Yes, the Coats n Clark (which is I think what is at Walmart) is not very good. I never realized there was a difference until I had to get my old Singer serviced. It was filled with dust. I bought the new Brother almost the same day I brought back my Singer from servicing. I only sewed a couple of things on my Singer with Coats n Clark, and sewed a lot of things on the Brother with either Gutermanns or Mettler. There was very little dust inside the Brother and tons already in the just cleaned Singer! Just to test it, I used some Coats n Clark on the Brother and it filled up with dust!

Plus, the machine embroidery thread is prettier, it's got a little shine that looks nicer than "regular" thread.

I really don't mind helping at all. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you!!! I may be able to go to a shop today and pick up some thread. Since I babysit my granddaughter and a great niece *5 months apart in age* it gets a little hard to travel during the week. Today I'll have extra help so I might venture out.. MIGHT is the key word! LOL..
I can't wait to get started again.. you've encouraged me a lot just by responding to my simple little posts!

Thanks again.. and have a great day!

I have the 270 D and just love it. I did have a class on how to use it and that made a big difference. Thread, stabilizer, needles all come in to play when embroidering. I use the brother pacesetter thread and that works the best. I have many different stabilizers depending what I am doing and the weight of the material. Different needle sizes also makes a big difference and to change it out often.
I updated last July and got myself an Innovis 1500D and this is of course is even better. I can do heavier jobs that I purchase on embroidery library.
I do polos, pillow cases, blankets, towels, sweatshirts and anything else I can get my hands on. I am doing Christmas nativity scenes right now on quilted material 28 X 22 for my daughter as a present.
Good luck and just take the time. Books help

I have that machine, and also a Babylock that I adore. The Brother, IMO, just whets your appetite for a better bigger machine. ;) I had issues with the Brother, agree, it hates the Coats & Clarks thread, I have found that Mettler, you can find it at Hancock Fabrics, works the best, and I prefer the polyester to the Rayon Sulky. Sulky breaks easily. You can also use Robison-Anton, but you have to use the large spool adaptor due to the thread cartridge. I have had excellent luck with Singer #15 and the WalMart brand bobbins (something home) also #15 I think. Don't use the #66, they won't fit. I have never used prewound disposible ones although I know a lot of people do. I also have found that the bobbin thread makes a difference for embroidery too. I now use Sulky brand bobbin thread and it works pretty good. There was a spool of thread with my Babylock that I liked but for the life of me I cannot find it to give you the name. My Babylock is my baby now, I have actually given the Brother to my DDs, but use it occasinonally for mending chores. I have a Babylock Ellure with a 5x7 embroidery area, which really opens you up to more options. I chose the Babylock because it uses the same .pes format and some things are interchangeable. I have an Amazing Box card reader and use Monogram Wizard by Needleheads monogramming software. I use the washable topper on everything I monogram, it gives a neater look. This is an addictive hobby. I have taken a break from it for a while but still do towels, shoe bags and aprons, especially during the holdays.

I am soooo glad to see this thread! I was just asking about this machine on the budget boards! ;)

For those of you who have it, do you think it is a good machine to learn on? I do lots of crafts, including all of my daughters hairbows and jewlery, and now I am learning to sew. I found a really good deal on this machine but wanted to make sure I wasn't biting off more than I can chew! :scared:

I have the ULT2003 machine and LOVE it.

Does this machine take a floppy to download designs and use? That is what would deter me as a PE Design is another $700 to use downloadable designs. I also prefer to use larger hoops and I think this one only takes a 4x4.

The 270D has a card slot, you have to either purchase prewritten cards or puchase a card writer. Mine cost $199 new off eBay. With the card writer you van download designs and then load the card. My car will hold like 6 designs at a time. The PE270D has a 4x4 maximum hoop size too.

Yes, the 270 is a good learning machine. I taught myself to sew on it, and if I can do that anyone can ;) I paid a little over $400 new for mine from WalMart when they were the hot item. As I mentioned in an earlier post, it's simple enough that my 10 & 12 year olds have been using it for two years now. :)

this machine also has an optional large hoop which is a 4x6 as well as a smaller hoop, not sure of the size. I ordered the large one from a site online and received it with days. I haven't used it yet. I have seen the card reader at Walmart for 129.00. One of these days I'm going to get one of those... but first I really need to sit down and master this machine. I have all of the componets, just have not taken the time to actually get it going.

Be aware that even though they sell a larger hoop it will not increase your sewing area. 100x100 (4x4) is the maximum that this machine will allow. That was one of my biggest gripes and is why I purchased my Babylock last year. I'm not familiar with the card reader from Walmart, is is also a writer that hooks to the computer? If it will do all that it's a pretty good deal. My writer will work with most any machine which was a big selling point for me. I concider it my best purchase. With a card writer you can purchase designs off the internet or purchase design disks (cheaper than cards in most cases) and load them onto the card. There is also software available, albeit very pricey, that allows you to manipulate designs and move them around. I also have a program called click and design 3D that allows movement of designs that I use occasionally. It was close to $200 alone. Feel free to email me and I can give you some links to design sites that I use. There are also free designs out there, I have a site for those as well.

Didn't realize the larger hoop would only allow the same amount of design.. how weird! LOL... Should have read up on it more...

email me once you get into it and I'll be glad to share what I've found. I don't know where you're located but if you're in a city that has a Brother dealer you may have access to the Brother threads. As I mentioned the Robison Anton/Metther ones work good. I also have advice on using metallic thread as well. About that hoop, I thought the same thing, larger hoop, more embroidery room. Then, before I ordered it I talked to a man at one of the sewing shops online and he told me the hard facts, it just allows you to hoop more fabric, boo hoo. It made me regret buying the machine, but it is still a good little machine and will use all the Disney cards, which are trademark restricted to the Brother units, therefore if I want to do anything Disney I have to use the Brother, not the Babylock.

Our Walmart has the card reader (PED basic) on clearance last week. It is worth the money for all the other projects that you want to do.

With the larger hoop you can add more designs at once on an item. I did my sweatshirt with many different Disney characters and at least I did not have to re-hoop every time.

Enjoy yourself, it is a lot of fun

Where can I go online to get thread for this machine? I was doing fine with the machine just doing regular mending projects, then I tried the embroidery with regular thread just to see if it worked; no problem! There are no fabric stores near here, so I drove Joanne's Fabric's and guess what they had - Coats and Clarks! I bought some anyway since I had gone so far, along with tear away stabilizer and spay adhesive. I set it up, and it was a nightmare! Once I was able to get the thread to load (which I had no problem with before) the shirts seemed to be eaten into the machine! The bobbin went crazy and I had to cut it away and vacuum up the threads! So I went to the only other fabric store, which is actually a home designer shop. She had Gutermann, which she assured me would work. I had trouble loading the thread; it took at least 10 tries each spool. The first three colors worked fine, but then I got an error message warning me about possible damage. Tried to clear it and start again, and it happened again. Seemed all the top thread was jammed under the bobbin area! Had to cut it away and use a tweezer to remove the threads. So now I want to be VERY CAREFUL about the thread I use! I've seen some that were labeled for the Brother machine, but I don't think they were made by Brother. And there are too many choices for the others! I don't know what the get!

Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately that seems to be a problem with that machine and certain threads. I ruined several things that way. I think it also has something to do with your bobbin thread. Are you using "bobbin thread" or just any old thread? It really does make a difference with the embroidery. I use Sulky brand or one called Finishing Touch that say specifically "bobbin thread" on them. As I mentioned above I have also had good luck with Mettler brand small spools and Robison-Anton larger ones, but with the Brother machine you have to use the thread adaptor which is a pain. For this reason I now use my Babylock exclusively when I embroider, except for the Disney cards. I have also had the Brother do the same thing during regular sewing as well, in fact it happened just the otehr day when I attempted to take up the straps on my daughter's camisole.

Thank you for th thread info. I'm going to check out the one place in our area that might have the threads I need before ordering. I had no clue about bobbin thread. I assumed you could fill a blank bobbin with the thread and be fine! wow.. the things you learn!!! :cool1:

Hi all!
Newbie to the forum and newbie to embroidery machines (finally stopped pining and did something aobut it!)

Just won a Brother SE-270D machine. Immediately after winning which I did a search for info and found this thread!!! So glad I did too... All the wonderful reviews about the machine has made me feel so reassured!

Wonderful forum and I so so eager to break open the box and start up my embroidery machine! (Wish me luck!!!)

Wow, glad this thread found me again!

I finally found thread that worked at a fabric store (not so close to home!). I ended up using Sulky. It has a nice sheen to it. It was a little more expensive, but it did not break or jam. Sometimes it takes me a few tries t thread, but not like the other ones! Once I get comfortable with the colors, I will try ordering online.

Thanks for all the help, gang!

Oh, and I've really enjoyed the machine for regular sewing, too. I made myself a dress for my Halloween costume. It was the first time in about a jillion years that I attempted a zipper, and it came out perfect!

I haven't taken delivery of my machine but hope the shipping is as quick for me as it has been for other winners of the Brother embroidery machine!!!

I love doing zippers!!! In fact I avoid botton holes and fudge with zippers all the time (can't find my button attachments for my singer machine). Now that I am a proud owner of the Brother SE-270D -- button holes are also going to be in my future!!!

I was wondering if a Brother Babylock large hoop will fit the machine?!!!?

Nope, unfortunately. Well, it will fit, but will not increase your embroidering area which is limited to 100x100 (4x4). I finally gave in and purchased a Babylock Ellure with the 5x7 area, along with the 4x4 hoop. Best part is all designs are interchangeable, .pes format, with the exception of the Disney designs which are copyright protected to the Brother machines, hence I kept that one too. I keep it in the corner for quick mending, as the thread cassette is so easy that the girls can set up the machine for me.

Couple more questions regarding the fonts that come installed in the se-270D; do they come in upper and lowercase or just in uppercase? Is it easy to do 3 letter monograms (two small letters with a larger letter in between)?

Thanks!!!

To be honest, the preloaded stuff isn't all that great. Nothing fancy enough for monogramming. I invested in a card writer (Amazing Box II) and software from Needleheads called Monogram Wizard Plus and use that for three inital monograms. Be warned though, it's not cheap, the box cost me ~$200 on eBay new, and the software was around $250 from my sewing store. What I like about the software is you can manipulate and move the letters around, make words, names etc. I also spent $200 on sizing/editing software that lets me flip, mirror and duplicate designs. With a card writer you can purchase designs off the internet or cds preloaded with designs, then load them to the card and sew them out. I've done aprons, sweats, kitchen towels, etc. The preloaded fonts are pretty basic, block lowercase, script, simple stuff. Here's a copy of the brochure:

Thanks for the brochure! The fonts shown are not bad... and you say there's lowercase too? Too bad they can't be used easily for Monograms....

I am a computer graphic artist with TONS of graphic software and would you believe that NONE of the applications convert to a PES format?!!! All the fonts one could want and nothing without additional expensive software!!! Aaarg. Well birthday's coming -- will give a FUN reason to look forward to that day!

I love sewing (well ok -- love expanding the wardrobe!) and thought the machine would be a great way to accent. Also am eager to get going on some personalized Holiday gifts!!! Oh the projects!!!! :yay:

Here is the Needleheads website, I have the Monogram Wizard Plus and a couple of the additional alphapacks. What I like about this software is that you can pick and choose and manipulate the ends and tops and everything.

http://needleheads.com/

There is also software out there that will allow you to scan your own design and convert it but we're talking about $1K or more. FWIW, if you don't get the Brother machine, look at the Babylock Ellure. Mine was around $1200, it also sews and embroiders, has a larger embroidery area (5x7) and is very easy to use, and I am a super novice sewer. I love this machine. But, as I mentioned, you can't use the Disney cards in it though. It is a real workhorse too.

You're too kind! LOL, I go at it in fits and spurts, I actually haven't embroidered anything in almost a year, when I made fleece shoe and lingeree bags with drawstrings and labelled them shoes, etc. after I saw some in the Vera Bradley luggage. I couldn't see over $300 for a suitcase that was no lighter than mine just because it had cute bags with it, so I made some. I took a border and manipulated it and used a cute font and made frames for the words, they turned out really cute, used lime green and fuschia fleece, black thread and black grosgrain ribbon for the drawstrings. Also made a huge laundry bag for our trips too. Both machines do super easy buttonholes and have the overcast stitch that finishes off a seam like a serger without the cutter. As I said, I'm a novice but did make both girls's costumes for MNSSHP last year on the Babylock: Amy as Jack Sparrow:

Thanks! I have to say that the pirate costume was a challenge. I had little problems with the vest (duh), but the pants and blouse were quite challenging. The first sewing place I went to told me to go with the adult pattern (she was 9 then) and it was way too small. I finally found a childs size, but it only went to like a size 8 (???). Luckily it was a good fit. The way that the patterns are written is ridiculous. Nothing is straightforward and I have a college degree, lol. The pants come together funny, you have to sew them a certain way then flip them around to make the final stitches. If you make the seam in the wrong place they look like they are made for a 3 foot tall three foot wide person. (been there, done that, had to buy more fabric). I started on them in August of '06, took about two weeks to make. The poodle skirt was a piece of cake, the fabric was fleece so no need to hem. The zipper was interesting, as was putting in a waistband. I had to rip a few times and start over. All in all I was pleased with how they turned out though. This year we purchased costumes though since we were unable to attend the party. :(

Now there is a small hoop available that allows you to embroider cuffs. I've never done anything that small though. The preloaded designs and fonts are size set too, you can't reduce them, a real bummer. Another thing to remember is that these are not industrial machines, so a lot of times you wind up having to open seams in order to hoop, which can be a pain. I found that the straight legged sweat pants from places like WalMart are easy to open the leg seam, allowing you to embroider down by the cuff. I have also done designs on polos, but you have to be careful hooping stretch fabric, well, be careful hooping in general. It also will kill your hands if you have even a touch of arthritis, you have to tighten the screw down and tug and stretch.

Since you mentioned tTink, there is a whole card of just her available. Check ebay before you purchase the cards from your local sewing store, the cards run ~ $75-$100 on ebay, usually a lot higher at your local stores. Nothing is cheap. Also, stay away from the cheap embroidery thread, you'll see quickly that these machines don't like it. I use Mettler poly thread, Sulky works okay but it tends to break on my Brother machine. Robison Anton and Madeira are good too. I think that Robison Anton is the parent company of Mettler, but with the cassette system that the Brother uses, you are limited as to the size spool you can accomodate. I found that I had to use the spool adaptor to use the little mini cans, and if you sew metallic, you have to use a net and a metallic needle. I'm rambling now. :)

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I didn't see even a tiny Tink preloaded.... but you are right, there are cards with her on them.

I SAW the prices on eBay and almost choked! And knoing that eBay is the price-competitive place, I figured I'd pay more in a store.

Saw something on TV, the other morning, about haggling. Might give that a try -- especially in this economy. And eBay gives me the power to walk away and still have a chance at a better price!

Hello all:
I found this group through google and was thrilled. I just purchased my brother 270D and a ped-basic card reader with card along with a small and large hoop. I'm very excited about embroidering. I have figured out how to write out full names using the alphabet built in the machine, but do not know how to make a full name using letters on the card which I have downloaded. As far as I can tell it can only be set one letter at a time which is a disaster for me as I'm not very skilled at this as it is. What am I doing wrong? Help.

Thats' correct. You have to have software that will either digitize your own designs (very pricey software, think over $600) or a monogramming program like Monogram Wizard Plus (think $300) and a card reader/writer. I bought a few design CDs from someone on ebay that was digitizing three letter monograms, I would just line them up in the hoop, far left, far right and center, but they were not connected and you could tell. I can really tell now that I use MW+ all the time. Sorry. :(

I take it you're using the preloaded fonts, right? Maybe of you rotate the design 90 degrees? I use Monogram Wizard plus software by Needleheads with a card writer (Amazing Box II). I can adjust size although the 4X4 hoop size limits waht you can do. I actually purchased a Babylock Ellure last year to get the 5X7 hoop area and still use all my brother stuff except the hoops and Disney licensed cards.

Right, I'm using the preloaded fonts. I have tried rotating it also. I'll have to look into the software that you are using. (I'm not sure how much more $$ DH is going to let me spend this soon after xmas though!!!)

I was looking at buying different fonts on ebay. I was hoping that they would work better. I thought maybe I could even resize them with the PED Basic software that I have. I may just purchase one to play around with. One seller is selling fonts for $6.50 and buy 2 get one free right now.

I admit I bought a few monogram fonts off eBay. Usually they are not manipulatable at all, or the three initial ones that I bought weren't. I paid ~$200 for the Amazing Box II, and about $300 at my local store for the Monogram Wizard Plus. Additional font packages run around ~$100 per pack. Towels are fine, I jsut suggest hooping tightly and using a topper, preferably a water soluble one. Check with your local Jo Ann or Hancocks Fabrics for some good books that give you ideas and advice. I suggest also going to this website : annthegran.com , there are lots of free designs out there if you have a card reader/writer. Also, Nancy Zieman has some good books.

I am to a novice on this machine ,but I am trying to learn. I love it

Sadly this machine has a maximum hoop size of 4X4. If your card has some designs for 5X7 they will not sew out. Unfortunately a larger hoop will not solve the problem. For this reason I purchased the Babylock Ellure which uses the same .pes format but also has 5X7 capability. I still use my Brother for quick mending, although the Babylock is a dream.

I am looking for a good bargain on thread too. How does everyone feel about using the polyester thread to embroidery? The embroidery thread is nice but pricey. I would really like to find a good bargain on embroidery thread. I have checked ebay and I haven't seen a real good deal.

By all means use embroidery thread for embroidering. Regular sewing thread looks awful. I use the Mettler or the Robison Anton. Brother also has their own threads. You can get deals on eBay and from some of the online sewing centers. Stay away from the Coats and Clarks that Wal Mart and some Hancock Fabric stores sell. It's terrible and breaks constantly. Also, steer clear of the Mylar threads that Sulks sells. IF you must use a metallic get one from a sewing center and use a metallic thread needle.

I have tried both and they do look different. i just did not want to waste embroidery thread when i was learning. I have heard that Coats and Clark is not good for your machine. However I am really finding it difficult to find stores that sell thread. Locally besides the ever famous Wally mart ,Joanns Etc is the only other place to go. I wait for sales at Joann's but they are not always having sales when I need the thread.

Online is probably my best bet.however shipping does add to the price. Do you have a favorite site?

When you began machine embroidery did you buy the thread color as you neeed it or did you buy a certain collection?

Sorry for all the ????? but you have been very helpful :-)

Here's a site that has decent prices, I've used both Madeira and Robison Anton Poly thread, I like the spool type, but I think they may give you fits with the thread cartridge. A way around that would be to use the spool extender (did you get one with your machine?). If you have one, it's real easy to use, snaps on the cartridge. I also use the net to keep the thread from unravelling too quickly. Also, I usually buy as I need, but I am blessed with a decent mom & pop sewing shop here that has the little spools of Mettler. I have ordered the Robison Anton set from someone and am pleased with that thread, I actually think (but don't quote me because I may be wrong) that it's the same as Mettler, it's just they brand the small ones Mettler and give the larger spools the parent company logo.

http://www.threadandmore.com/default.asp

I've also ordered some things from Ann the Gran, http://www.annthegran.com/ register for her free site and you have access to tons of designs that you can download and load to a memory card if you have a card writer.

Hey guys new to this thread too

Got this machine for Christmas and have a few questions

I bought a case of the polystar embroidery thread because it was "made" for the Brother machines

http://www.mrvacandmrssew.com/go/product/id/362

it seems to work OK

If I squish the thread into the thread cassett it seems to be under the max height line... I assume it is too large

so when I use it on the extended thread thing the thread ends up getting itself out of the track and mucks up my embroidery... which frankly makes me feel grumpy

is it my thread???? do I need to use the netting over the thread? whats my issue

also I seem to have poor bobbin tension when I sew a basic straight stitch but the book clearly states that Brother sets that before it leaves the manufactuer facility... so other than change my upper thread tension what else would make the threads loop on the top of the fabric? is there something I am not getting?

I am going from using my kenmore for like the last 15 years all machine to this computerized thing and it has me quite overwhelmed

thanks
julie

Are you using "bobbin thread" or are you spinning a bobbin of embroidery thread? The reason I ask is that is one problem I HAVEN'T had. For the other problem with it running loose, try the netting, or , if it's just a little snug, just try (on a sample) it in the cassette maybe even without the top piece.

for regular sewing like straight stitch I am spinning a bobbin with the same thread in the upper spool and lower bobbin

I will try different stuff with the embroidery

thanks

DO you have any lingeree thread? It's finer than regular thread and works great for embroidery bobbins. ANother option is Brother or Finishing touch or Sulky cotton bobbin thread. All are a little heavier than the lingeree thread but work good too.

I think we have too many topics LOL

ok I have tension issues when I am doing regular sewing... straight stitches like for taking in my kids pants

The lower thread comes up looping the upper thread. In this case I am widing my own bobbins as I want red thread on BOTH sides of the fabric

when I am embroidering I dont seem to haev tension issues at all BUT my upper thread unthreads itself from the track... you know where the numbers are 2-6 then cut the thread then it threads the needle automatically... I will start an embroidery project and a few min in... the thread is no longer on track and I end up with a mess

That is too weird. Not being critical, but you're threading the way the diagrams go, right? I found that if I load the bobbin backwards it causes all kinds of problems, both on this machine and also on my Babylock. I agree about the same color bobbin for sewing though, ;). Also, are you loading the thread the way the cartridge says to? I think the thread has to feed a certain way. Just brainstorming here, I have no real input.

yes I am certain I am following the threading directions for both the thread and bobbin... I am certain the bobbin is correct.

I watch the DVD that came with my machine and read the directions and follow the diagrams on the machine

I was thinking it was not really the bobbin tension but the upper thread tension and tried changing that but it didnt make a difference

I also tried using the spool of wound bobbin thread that came with my machine... certainly it isnt that I wound the bobbin wrong? but nope

I will call Brother today I think

apparently my tension issue was indeed a user error

when you remove the thread cartridge and open the little henge door it has a click to close it firmly... opening it always feels like I am breaking it so I had not been crushing it into a closed position...

so closing it firmly and doing my best not to break it open my tension is fine

now embroidery... apparently if I use the thread I bought (seen in link above) in the thread cartridge rather than in the extender thing it works fine even though the spool is technically a tad over the Fill line. also it works best with the littlest spool topper thing rather than the one that is as wide as the thread... its a cone shaped spool and the top is narrower than the thread... but I need the spool topper thats larger than the actual spool top and not the thread

learning curve on this thing!

Now I will try T shirts

Wash cloths are a good starting point too. With the t shirts be sure to hoop tight (tighten that screw really tight) and use a water soluble topper for the best results. when you're finished just tear it away and then mist with a spray bottle.

Hello
I've been following your discussion about the SE270D. I just received one as a gift and I've been playing with the embroidery designs. I would really like to do fancy monograms, but from what I've been able to learn I would need to buy the PED Basic and maybe the Monogram Wizard software. Are these compatible with a Mac? I don't have a PC with Windows. By the way you have all been very helpful with thread, bobbin, and stabilizer questions.
Thanks

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with the PED Basic, I have an Amazing Box II, I paid under $200 for it from an internet sewing store that I found through eBay. It works great with Windows, not sure about Mac. I just walked back to the sewing/computer room and found this on the Amazing Box: Amazing Designs Technical Support: 800-563-1691. Maybe they can help with your dilemma. They may actually sell a different box for Mac. Same thing with Needleheads, the maker of the Monogram Wizard software. They are super nice there, if you look on the website www.needleheads.com there is probably a contact email or phone number. HTH!

You are too funny! I have used the iron on before, but the plain kind is cheaper. Back before Walmart "modernized", as in year before last for us, they had fabric and sewing notions. They would always have the Tear away on the bolt for like $1 a yard. I always stocked up so I am still in good shape. There is also a tear away that is water soluble, it's a little more per yard. The Solvy water soluble is about $2.5 a yard at Hancock, they also have the other types as well (on a good day). When doing purses that I'm making I will often use the sew in interfacing for stabilizer. I had a long conversation with a lady one day in Hancocks that had started out doing this for fun but is now in business in Auburn AL (college town). She was the one that told me about the topper, said when money was tight she would use saran wrap or sandwich bags, then pick it all off. Not me, if money's that tight I just won't embroider!!

I understand about being a fabric collector, when I was heavy into this I'd often just buy a yard or so if something caught my eye. It came in handy this Christmas when we ran out of white "snow" for the Christmas houses, out came the 1.5 yard of white fleece that I was going to use to make the funny pointy toed stockings with red and lime green. Younger DD came out this evening with some scraps from her Jack Sparrow costume from '06 and asked to have them for a "secret project" she has going on in her room. THis was one of my first major sewing projects with the Brother:

I just got the Ped Basic yesterday. (Very convenient that I was home sick from work and was able to play!!LOL:rotfl2:

I was able to download quite a few patterns. The only problem is that some websites do not give the hoop size and when you download the pattern it is unable to be used. I have not tried to sew these yet, I hope to this weekend.

I do have a couple of questions for anyone familiar with the PED basic:

First, when I am transferring my pattern to the memory card. A message pops up that states all the patterns already on the card will be removed.
the directions state you have to trload them again with the new one, does anyone know a way around this?

Second, one the pattern list, the designs that are crossed out(too big) cannot be deleted from the list..is there a trick for that?

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend TGIF:cheer2:

This is a super easy machine! I had NEVER sewn before and made that above costume by following the pattern instructions. The thread cartridge makes it increadibly easy to thread the machine, both of my girls, ages 10 & 12 now, were able to sew on it, thread the machine and run the embroidery part. IMO, the only drawback isthe 4X4 hoop size. That's why I purchased a Babylock Ellure, but I still kept the Brother as it's the only brand machine that will read the Disney embroidery cards, even though the Babylock is also .pes format.

Oceana, do you have the instructions? The reason I ask is I know how to do this but can't remember the exact event sequence, but, as long as you don't take it off the hoop, just start the design, then when it goes to the first color, you can advance to the next color until you find your spot. You can also go back either one stitch, or in increments of like 10 or more by holding down the back button on the screen. HTH!

The machine itself. When you push in the thread cassette there is a thing in there that pushes down and it just fell out. I guess its the part that threads the machine.

No, you don't need the PED basic, I'm not even sure what that is. This is a card reader/writer that you can use with multiple machines. it has four slots, you just put the card in the one that matches your machine brand. I use it back and forth with my Brother and Babylock (both are .pes but have different hoop size, the Babylock also does 5 X 7). I simply have two different slot names, and click the one I'm needing , if I do 4X4 I use the Brother one, for 5X7 I use another one. You can put up to 6 designs at a time on the card for versatility too. You can also buy additional blank cards as well. I just used it with the Babylock the other night while making a dog bed for our new puppy. Embroidered her name (Sadie) in a scrolly frame, about 5X6 total. Used the Monogram Wizard Plus software to create the design.

Depends on the design complexity and the color changes. My Babylock is faster, my entire design was done in less than 10 minutes. The Brother will give you an approximate time too. I've had some complex designs take 40 minutes on the Brother.

Thanks..another question, what is a Babylock and can I use it with a Disney pattern. I am just looking to stitch a Micey head or basic design that comes with the machine but will need to do over 100. I am not a sewer and am hoping the machine basically does the work. The difference between a 10 minute design and 40 is huge for me though. I also assume while the machine does the stitching, it is not the kind of thing you can walk away or do paperwork while it stitches?

I measure and mark dead center with a chalk marker or disappearing pen. Then I center the hoop using the plastic ggrid that came with the hoop, lining the center up on the center of the grid. It works great doing this. The machine will automatically center the design for you. I use those pens that have one side disappearing and one side washable. I just wish I could find them right now. Sadie's bed design was done the quick and dirty way, I folded the fabric to find the center. Better than nothing. :)

Help with my Brother 270D!!! Okay, I'm loving the machine so far but I'm having trouble getting certain items into it to embroider them!!! I have a tall tote bag that I just can't get hooped. It's kind of stiff so when I slide the hoop inside the bag I can't attach the hoop to the machine because the rest of the bag is in the way. Hopefully, this makes sense to someone out there! I'm beginning to think I'm crazy and just missing something really simple that would fix my problem!

For stuff like that I rip the seam, hoop it, embroider, then redo the seam.

Anyone have an approximate "cost per item" or an idea on you buy $X worth of thread and have done at least y patterns?

I am trying to figure out if this is workable for gifts or if it will cost me a fortune

Ok I am ready to play with the embroidery feature of this machine now. Wanted to get the sewing part down. Wow that was easy. So, I bought the pacesetter thread made for the brother machines and now I'm ready to go.

Question though, I know the Disney cards are expensive but on ebay they sell CD's of Disney embroidery designs that say they are in PES format. These are about $50 for several hundred designs. I have the PED Basic that came with my machine so will these CD's actually work or is it too good to be true? Has anyone bought embroidery designs from a CD before or just the cards? And this is refering specifically to the Brother machine and the PED Basic.

Does anyone have some tips on how to keep the rest of the garments out of the way when embroidering. I have ruined three things, because i caught some extra material in the embroidery design
Is there some kind of clip or something to keep the extra material away?

I am sure all you fellow embroidery nuts have many ideas..maybe:confused:

thanks

I have bought several cd .pes files from ebay and they work great!! just make sure they are for a 4x4 hoop or they won't work. they usually send you the files in an email. hope this helps.

I use hair clips, like the small banana ones. Gather a bunch of fabric and clip it. Binder clips work well too. Been there, done that, lol.

I'm so sorry, I just read your question! Babylock is a higher end brand machine that still uses the same .pes format. The Disney design cards, however, are prioritized for Brother only though, so I keep that machine around for any Disney stuff. My Babylock is a dream to sew on though, a lot smoother and faster than the Brother. Another example of getting what you pay for I guess.

Occasionally I'll break a needle, but not like that. When you replace them are you pushing them in all the way? I found that sometimes I'll break one if the fabric is too thick (using a regular needle on denim for instance). Also, are you using the correct gauge needle for your job? I dont' think that that is supposed to happen though, I'd contact a sewing store and ask the experts!

I think that you have to purchase a rather expensive attachent to serge. It will do a finishing stitch, I think the #'s are like 13 & 14, you use a different foot for it maybe "J"

Hi All -

I've been reading through while waiting for the arrival of my machine... I ordered it through HSN.com.

Question for anyone who got theirs in a similar fashion: WHERE is the Alphabet embroidery cartridge??? It was listed as an accessory to the machine when I bought it!

HSN directed me to Brother - and they are now closed for the weekend. Am I missing a secret compartment where it could be hiding?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks for all the great tips!:flower3:

I did not get mine from HSN, but all the alphabets were already loaded in the machine. Once you attach the embroidery cartridge to the machine you should be able to see them using your touch screen. I hope this helped:)

The only alphabet I know of that is included are preloaded on the machine. I would think if it says you get a cartridge you'd get something extra. Should have either been in a separate box included or in the machine somewhere. I would contact HSN to double check if they ment a separate cartridge or if they are the ones that are preloaded.

First I'd make sure that the card is not meant for a machine with a larger embroidery field than the 270-D. IF it's okay I'd contact the place you purchased it from and go from there. When I insert a card into either of my machines the embroidery carriage moves and the screen changes but no message to turn machine off. Do you have the carriage attached when you insert the card?

When I had problems with the autothread, it turned out that I needed a higher quality thread. Everything is packed away right now, but I think I ended up using Sulky; that worked most times on the first try, and looked nice in the finished projects (had a bit of a shine). I did have to travel about 30 minutes to get it, though. Are you using bobbin thread for the bobbin?

I just thread it manually! LOL..
I still haven't had much luck getting mine set up right though.. I'm about to put it in a yard sale!

I had the problem too but I found that the needle is the problem. Make sure if you are using the embroidery thread that you are using an embroidery needle in the machine. once I changed the needle and it worked fine.

Hope this helps
