View Full Version : A few tips I will definitely use again...

Last year was our first trip to The World and here are some of my tips:

1. Pack kids' outfits in gallon-size baggies and label them by the days (Monday). The kids can just get their baggie from the hotel drawer and put it on. :thumbsup2

2. I stock up on Gatorade Mix pouches, they sell them near the Kool-aid at Walmart. They're made for 2 quart pitchers, but we'd just pour some into our water bottles and shake. These were a great life-saver when my son got dehydrated and a bloody nose in Epcot last year. :guilty:

3. I planned on washing laundry last year and even had a roll of quarters saved just for this, but I didn't think about what I'd lug the clothes down to the laundry room with. I tried the plastic bags that Mousekeeping leaves the towels in, but they ripped, so this year I'm prepared with a laundry bag (like the ones college kids use).

4. Definitely let each kid have his own hippack. That way they're in charge of their autograph book and glow in the dark sticks and quarters for the penny-press machines. That way, you don't have to stop every minute to dig in your backpack or purse. :sad2:

5. I saved the colored tubes that M&M Minis come in and filled them with pennies and quarters. I stacked them 2 quarters, then 1 penny, and repeated this pattern all the way to the top. Each kid had his own color and could easily find the money whenever we bumped into a penny-press machine. :)

6. Dining Envelopes! :cheer2: I took plain white envelopes labeled with each day (Sunday) and every time we ate I'd put in the receipt and at the end of the day I'd tally the total. This helped us stay in our food budget for the week. Also in the envelope I kept a $20 bill for each day's snack (popcorn, cotton candy). If we didn't use it all we'd just put it in the next day's envelope.

7. Souvenir Envelopes! I also took an envelope for each kid with their name on the front and every time they bought something we'd stick the receipt in their envelope. (Since we didn't let them carry cash and used our room card for purchases) At the end of the day, I would subtract what they spent from their total and write it down on the envelope. That way they knew how much they had left and it helped them to choose their souvenirs wisely, instead of just asking Mom and Dad to get them whatever they want. :woohoo:

LOVE your idea about the M&M mini's tubes! Can't tell you the number of times I was either looking for one more quarter or one more penny.

Just wanted to comment on the coins. IF you are flying, do not put these on carry on luggage. I went through ALOT going through security with rolled coins. Seems that they think they are explosives. :rotfl: Spent a long time in security, next time I will pack them in luggage. Suggested by airport security. But they will probably blow up my bag :lmao:

My friend took them out of carry on and placed them on the conveyer? belt and still had a terrible time getting through.

Just a heads up so you will be prepared.

Wow! The dining envelope system sounds great. It will be just DH and I, but I was wondering today how we were going to keep from blowing our dining budget. This will work great, :sunny: Thanks!!

Great tip about the Gatorade mix pouches. Will definitely pick those up before our trip this Sunday.

Last year having each of my sister's six-year-old quadruplets have their own fanny pack was wonderful. We are avid penny pressers and so them being able to have all their own items at their disposal (M&Ms mini tube with coins, autograph book, etc.) saved so much time. (Tip for penny pressers: Use pre-1982 pennies as they are 97% copper and press 'nicer' than the 1982+ pennies. Also, leave the dated side of the penny dirty/tarnished and (for most machines) insert the penny into the slot with the date side facing outwards. After the penny is pressed the design will be on one side and you will still be able to see the Lincoln head and date on the other side (you can shine up the design side with a rubber eraser or small touch of copper cleaner). We sorted out a lot of 1971 pennies to use for our trip to WDW last year and our upcoming trip as that is the date that WDW opened).

It's also good to also put i.d. in their fanny packs with parents' cell phone numbers, allergies, etc. Gave my sister and I peace of mind, as well as the kids, knowing that if they got separated from us (which never happened, thank goodness) all they had to do was approach a cast member and show them their i.d. card.

Another tip for a laundry bag are those giant Ziploc bags that are now being sold (I think they are five gallon?). They also come in handy for wet clothes, etc.

Just wanted to comment on the coins. IF you are flying, do not put these on carry on luggage. I went through ALOT going through security with rolled coins. Seems that they think they are explosives.Good tip. I had the same thing happen to me when going through security with rolled coins. Next trip I put them in my checked luggage but could tell that they had been removed and examined. From then on I've always taken them out of the coin wrapper and put them in see-through Ziploc bags so that there was no question as to what they were.

I love the dining envelope idea. I will be on the DPlan and using my DDE card but I have having all those slip in my fannypack. I can then see how much for Dining plan and how much for DDE plan. I can then give a better report of how much I spent/saved each day. using both plans

I do something similar like you do with the gatorade. I absolutely HATE the taste of water, and gatorade is worse than that (from being a kid and riding in parades, gatorade is all we drank! Does "original" even have a flavor??!! I'm odd, I know!)
I buy the Crystal Light singles, or the ***mart off brand version. They are small enough to fit into my purse, and definately makes my water bottle taste better! They come in sugar free lemonade, original, peach, or rasberry ice tea.

I'm definately bringing a hamper! I never even thought of that idea! I always used the mousekeeping bags in the closet.
Thanks for the idea!

Kim...I found some smaller fannypacks at WalMart in the purse section. They are technically adult size, but the bag is smaller and the strap can be made really small.

We carried a clothes hamper on our last trip in Dec. Great idea. :thumbsup2 Also the m&m tubes for carring the coins. we never had to hunt for pennies and quarters when we needed them for the press machine. :tink:

I also had the kids use their own fanny packs. Mainly for snacks! :rotfl2: I found them at Target in with the luggage. They were adult size but could get small enough to fit my DS4.

We also had a "color of the day" t-shirt. We all had 2 sets of matching shirts and then just color matched the rest of the days. (orange, yellow, green...) It really helped keep everyone together.

I have to add a few I used the last time.

Instead of M&M tubes I used empty perscription containers. The tops are more secure and you don't end up with spilled quarters. The other up side to then is that they are opaque(sp) so you can see when you are getting low on quarter/pennies.

Instead of a hamper I used a suitcase. I rolled it down to the laundry and then folded the clothes and just rolled them back to the room. much easier than dealing with bags. I also did this when the kids were in the pool. Just watch the clock and you will know when it is time to dry.

I went through airport security many times with pennies in M&M tube with no problem, not to say nobody would. I was worried that if they were in checked baggage then they'd be more apt to open it and disturb all of my well packed clothes, and they're not concerned with getting it put back neatly. At security, I took it out of my carry on and told them what it was, and they said fine. I did ask if it was a good idea and they agreed that it would be more hastle to check it.They see these tubes all of the time at Orlando airport. They just laughed.
I also used my luggage to do the laundry. Although I stayed there and read a book. If I planned on leaving for an hour ,I'd be afraid somebody would take it. Some people need extra luggage to bring bach souvenirs !

Someone asked about the clothes not wrinkling. Well toddler clothes fit into a 1gallon ziplock great. (I use them to send extra clothes to daycare with my son. His name is on it and no one wonders who clothes they are if they end up out of his cubby.) But you can do this with adults as well. (So they husband or older kids don't ask what they should wear.) The older kids/adults don't fit into a 1 gallon bag though, but ziplock makes a 2 gallon bag. These things are GREAT! I use them for a ton of things around our house. I can only find them at Target though. Fold things up, push the air out and pack away!

WOW ... What a great thread.! We leave in a week ( and of course I'm almost packed!!!) ( DH thinks I'm NUTS!) and now I am going to run around to find these M&M tubes ( with three kids collecting coins it was such a drag looking for pennies every 10 minutes last year..).. and ziplocks... I hope I can fit them in my already OVERPACKED suitcase. I did buy a Dollar store "shoe organizer" to hang on the door for all those little extras... ( creams , toothbrushes.. ect.) that always take up so much room on the vanity counter.I also found a single serving coffee maker at Walmart for about $7.00 so I can have my fix before Breakfast in case the rooms don't have one....It's so small and fits into my suitcase great!

You can buy an inexpensive pop-up hamper at most dollar stores. I like it better than a suitcase, because you can leave it in the bathroom and collect all the dirty clothes easily. Since we drive, I just throw that in the back of the van and have a suitcase free for other stuff.

I also use the over the door shoe organizer. I can't imagine not having it. It keeps the clutter off of the counters and you can see everything. :thumbsup2

I posted this somewhere else about a remedy for wrinkled clothes.

I bring a spray bottle and fill it with water. Mist the wrinkles. It usually takes care of the problem. Sometimes I'll gently run my hand over the area if it's a tough wrinkle.

Works like a charm. And it's free! :) (Unlike the expensive, Downey "Wrinkle Release".)

I also used a variation of the Gatorade Idea. My kids like Koolaid, so I made single serving packs of KoolAid with foodsavor bags. About 3-4 TBSP of Koolaid Mix (out of the jar) flavors a water bottle.

Also with the fanny packs, if they are made from nylon they are a great place for kids to put their pins for pin trading. The lanyard drove my dd crazy, so we just put the ones she wanted to trade with for the day on the outside of her fanny pack.

Everyone laughs at me for this but... I always pack kids clothes in ziplocs, but also wanted to get DH's clothes ready so I wouldn't have to tell him every morning he did not match. Since I recycled shorts for him, putting outfits together would not work. So as I was packing, I laid each outfit on our bed--- shorts, shirt, shoes, etc & snapped a pic w/ the digital cam.
I printed the pics up 4 to a page & taped them to the inside of his closet in our travel trailer (you could tuck them in your suitcase)

This way DH & kids always looked good & I didn't have to worry about anyone!

Gosh, I hope you guys don't slam me for this!

I think you probably may be stuck with an adult sized pack. I just took ours out and packed it with a few snacks, purell, chapstick and mini first aid kit, and there was still room. But not room for the autograph book or water bottle. My sister in law encountered the same problem and she is going with the adult sized ones. Bummer 'cause they look so huge on the kids!

Instead of hip/fanny packs, I bought portable CD player holders from the $1 section at Target. They are a thick foam (like a coozie) and have a wide waist belt. I thought these would be good for my DS's autograph book and pen. We tried them out and they fit perfectly.

I just bought fanny packs at Walmart for the kids. ( 5 bucks each) They weren't huge, but big enough to hold some snacks, autograph book and spending money. I got water bottles that are 1 liter sized, come with their own little insulated cover. They have a short strap with a clip, the kids can clip the water bottle to the fanny pack. :thumbsup2

I looked at the water bottles with the long strap that you wear across your chest, but I was thinking that would chafe in the hot May weather. :sunny:

For me I will be bringing a backpack that I bought on a Disney World trip 14 years ago! I've used this backpack for every trip I ever go on. It's great!

OH MY!! the over the door shoe holder I LOVE IT!! I may actually pack our carryon eveything in a place bag this time- that comes with a hanger for the door. But if I do what I always end up doing- dumping it all in at the last minute- I am bringing that shoe thing! Thanks for the idea. We also use Ziplocs for everything- I pack baby's clothes in it by category(shirts in one bag- onsies in another ect...) for the bigger kids I put underwear in one and socks in another- so no more Whose socks are these fights in the morning. And another ziploc use..in the summer we place a washcloth in the ice bucket the night before we are headed out - then in the morning we grab it put it in the ziploc with some more ice and it is an instant cool off.

I have 5 little kids and we go to Florida every other year. The first year we went I bought them all adult size fanny packs and then tied a knot or two in the belt part to make it fit better. Then they have more room for all of their shtuff...and if you put the knots on the side so it rests above their hip they don't feel it when they sit back on a ride.

Wow - these are fantastic tips! Please keep them coming!! My DH and I are starting the adoption process and will be celebrating our "Forever Family" at Disney World when it gets finalized (we're adopting through DHS, a child who has been in foster care - I can imagine that they probably have never been to Disney - I think it's the perfect way for us to all start our new life together  )

We need LOTS of tips! Thanks so much!

I don't know anything about adopting kids, but I do have experience with my kids and working with kids.

Also, I remember a thread on here about taking newly adopted kids to WDW. Here's a couple things I remember. Someone suggested watching Disney movies before going, to build recognition of the characters because sometimes we take it for granted that others have had the same experiences that we have had and that just isn't true.

If your child is from another culture, the hustle and bustle of WDW may be overwhelming at first, so take things slowly. They might not appreciate where they are, but will appreciate being part of a loving family no matter where they are. Best wishes.

Wow - great idea of getting them familiar with the characters - you're completely right - I did take that for granted!

We are adopting through the state of Maine (a child that has been in foster care) so hopefully they will know and appreciate where they are - we will, of course, play it by ear - if it seems 'too much' we will wait a bit before going.

Thank you! :thumbsup2

What a great thread. I love the Mini M&M container idea! It was such a pain to dig for coins last summer! We used the ziplocs and it was great. DH was skeptical when I was packing but agreed that it was a terrific idea by the end of the trip. Made things so simple! I am going to buy a pop-up mesh hamper for next time and one of the over the door things since my dd will be 13 and will have a whole plethora of toiletries this time LOL We also always brought a hand towel or two into the parks - we went in July and DH liked to have one around his neck. A small pack of baby wipes for quick hand washings, along with the antibacterial gel. The gel doesn't get dirt off! We also used them to wash off a table at CS occasionally if needed. We used the generic packets of drink mix for the water bottles. The kids loved it. I bought several of the single serving cereals and several plastic spoons for quick breakfasts or snacks in our room. The kids could get it themselves while I was getting ready. Spray on sunscreen - aerosol - so fast and convenient - I'll never use lotion again. Teva's for all family members = no blisters!

A poster earlier mentioned bringing Kool Aid to flavor kids water, and carrying it in a little container--well now Kool Aid makes Kool Aid singles--they just came out in the stores a few weeks ago.
they are just like the Crystal Light On the Go, but Kool Aid!
Grape, Cherry and Tropical Punch.
They also have a Country Time lemonade version.
I think it said it would take two little tubes to flavor a 16-20oz bottle.

We too bring a small softsided case of wipes (usually w/ a Disney theme!) along w/ the purel. Soooo many times the wipes work better than the Purel...and then you finish off w/ the purel to sanitize.

ALWAYS bring a nightlight w/ us and a backup bulb! just gives a little glow w/out having to have the bathroom light on. Helps the kids to feel more comfortable in a strange room when they can make out the other bed w/ Mommy & Daddy in it.

We bring a few trader pins in a ziplock bag in our pockets for each day. Easy to see and get to w/out the chafing of the lanyard around the neck.

I know I'm in the minority, but I can't stand fanny packs. :rotfl: They get me all sweaty around the waist, no matter how loosely I think they're hanging. I carry a purse that has a lot of compartments built into it's lining and flap. A sport for my license and a few cards...a safe zipper section for extra money, a decent size lined middle for a couple of drinks and snacks. The outside pockets hold my cell phone, sun glasses and passes so I can whip them out quickly and get FPs. It cost me $10 at Target and I love it! Days when we take the video camera it fits inside too. It has a thicker soft strap than most pocket books and looks more like a camera bag so DH doesn't mind carrying it occassionaly either (when it has the heavier camcorder in it. Otherwise, I'm fine w/ it.

We make a grocery stop on the way to the hotel and always buy a box of nice soft kleenex as it makes such a difference. We get OJ, Apple Juice boxes, gogurts, that sort of thing that we didn't want to pack in our suitcases.

Bring light sticks from home. And here's a tip.....if you have a fridge in your room, put the light stick in the small freezer section when you return at night. It will last for 2 or 3 nights. When you 1st take it out it is so cold it barely glows, but as it warms up in your hands...and you shake it around...voila! It works again. The kids think it is Disney magic. :wizard:

Let your kids take some pictures. My son started when he was 5 and sure, some are a little blurry, but most came out pretty darn good. And they're from a diff't perspective. We give each one a disposable camera...and then later in the trip, I started letting him take pics w/ our digital camera too as he was so careful.

Here's something we always do....

How nice would it be to sleep in your own bed and still be on vacation... Well - the airplanes won't take King Size beds....Don't even ask...

Bringing your own set of sheets is something I hear of People doing... well... ok....if you have the room for them...

We bring our own pillowcases!! That's just enough personalization to the bed set to make you more comfortable to sleep on. They have your smell and are soft
and you know they are clean....

Just don't forget to bring them home after your trip (we did that once - Donated to the Disney Pillowcase Fund - wonder if I can write that one off?? :duck: )

Just make sure it's not a white pillowcase. Ive brought pillows from home (in colored casses) and it was obvious they were mine. Ive never had a problem. They have always fluffed them and put them on the bed with the rest of the pillows.

Great tips!! If you are going in the cooler months those little cotton stretch gloves are wonderful!! We arrived the weekend after Thanksgiving and while the first few days were warm, by the middle of the week it was cold in the evenings. My kids were so thanksul to have them and they only take up a little bit of space.

While I agree this is a nice homey-touch, does Mousekeeping leave them alone? :confused3

Thanks for sharing! :thumbsup2

we always bring one from home and we make sure it is not in a white case

Hehehe....
I have some Blue and Yellow Winnie the Pooh pillowcases that I always take :rolleyes1
So since they are not the usual white ones - I have never had a problem with Mousekeeping.
They are always awesome about never touching your stuff - even if its in the way - sometimes it looks as if they make the bed around my pillowcases!! :rotfl:

I just found the Downy wrinkle releaser in a travel size bottle! I love this stuff but couldn't imagine taking up the space by packing it and I had resigned myself to lots of ironing. The best thing to do is spray you clothes following the directions on the bottle, then hang those clothes up in the bathroom while you shower (steam) then you can use the hair dryer to dry the spots you sprayed. This stuff worked on everything except the clothes that really have to be ironed, like a linen blouse.

I pack 4 or 5 bandanas. They are great for wiping sweat off or tying to a stroller for ID or tying your hair back if it's long (like mine) or using it as a cover-up for your head (or little ones heads)when the the sun is beating down - there are a barrage of things that they are useful for and they wash and dry quick in the sink of the hotel with hand soap and they are really inexpensive you can get a 3-pack for a couple of dollars. I like to use it as a head wrap at the pool or at the water parks - it won't get ruined if it gets wet and stays on your head even going down the water slides.....my kids love them because they come on all kinds of funky designs and colors and my 4 year old will wear it as opposed to a hat to cover up his head.....

I am loving all these great ideas - keep 'em coming!!!

Take the bulb-less, flat-panel night lights. Hard to describe, but I know GE makes a version. They're great because you don't have the glare, they don't take up very much space & there aren't any bulbs to break/replace.

The bandanas are a great idea. My kids and I each wear neon colored ones to the parks. It makes it really easy to spot each other in a crowds.

Cargo style shorts and capris worked out well. DS carried the autograph books and the pen in his. DH had extra film in his pockets and I carried the park maps, the Crystal Light packets and the lip goo in mine.

QUARDRUPLETS!!! Bless your sister's heart! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Mini M & M tubes...YAY, a reason to start eating more M & M's

I fit snacks, first aid kit, purell on the outside zipper, tissue, money and i.d., and chapstick. I pinned a guest of honor badge on the front and it looks really cute!

Target carries a travel size Oust room spray that we take along to freshen up the room or to keep handy in case it is needed in the bathroom. These are usually at the checkout but I saw some today back by the luggage on clearance for .87!

We had the best fanny packs for our kids. My FIL bought them a couple of years ago when DDs were going to sailing school. I found a link :

http://store.summitcampinggear.com/coforkideh2o.html

They are really roomy and have a place for a water bottle. It comes with a water bottle that you can refill, but a regular Aquafina/Poland Spring-type bottle works too.

BTW, I love the tip about taking the clothes to the laundry room in the rolling suitcases. We used the pop-up hampers from the Dollar Tree (which I recommend as they keep the room neat) but they weren't great to carry! I will definitely do that next time!

I was trying to think of a way to have all my DH's clothes ready so he wouldn't have to worry about not matching

"Hunny, does this match?" or me saying "Your not waering that??" :crazy2:

I agree, this is a great thread! I used a shoe organizer for my cruise 2 yeas ago (bathroom very small), but now it is hanging on the door in my laundry room with all my cleaning supplies. It is so convenient to just grab what I need without digging in a cupboad or moving things around on a shelf to get to what I need!
I'm leaving in 5 days for WDW and am definately getting some of these great items for my trip! Thanks so much! :Pinkbounc

I have bought many of the things suggested for our upcoming trip.

One more tip I haven't read on here...I am bringing a small pair of scissors this time. There are always tags to cut off, things to trim, & I have never had scissors with me. I am bringing kid scissors.

Just don't forget to bring them home after your trip (we did that once - Donated to the Disney Pillowcase Fund - wonder if I can write that one off?? :duck: )
DD left her pillow there last year :( She was so bummed.

Forgot about that! You can buy fold-up scissors too - they're less than $5 and you can get a nice pair in the sewing dept. Or you can get a cheapie pair for a buck sometimes at the dollar store or Walmart.

This may have already been posted somewhere. When we were at our off-site resort we had all these extra towels; if any of us showered twice before the next set came we couldn't tell which towel was which so I put each of our names on a clothespin and clipped on the towels. I pack all the "consumable" type stuff in a collapsable cooler. We use it to keep stuff cold (and organized) poolside. As we consume stuff, there is room to pack souvenirs. I travel with very tiny manicure scissors. They are perfect for cutting off tags, etc. I found the back pack of my dreams in the luggage section at Target. It is very well made with lots of pockets (that zip from both sides - very important to me). Plenty of room but closer to a purse size. I can fit a water bottle in it, and I always put the cold or frozen water bottle in an old tube sock so it doesn't get anything wet. Works like a charm and also keeps it colder longer.

We went during summer rainy season. I wish I had thought ahead of my suggestion.

Pack an extra pair of socks in a ziplock bag.

Our socks got soaked during a downpour. It would have been nice to have dry socks to put on even if our shoes were still damp!!

I actually keep a miniture Purell bottle clipped right to my purse at all times. I just refill it with the larger version that i keep at home, always prepared with 2 boys. (I found it in Target in the minitures section.) I have found a few useful things there, like small packs of handwipes etc.
Back to the envelope with the dining budget. I actually keep my entire days money budget in an envelope marked with each day of the vacation. That way I can have extra for the next days budget if I underspend one day, and I never have a problem with overspending. (as I usually do) Each morning I grab one envelope for the day and keep the rest in the room safe, or in the car sometimes.
I have tried the M&M tubes and had problems with them popping open in my purse, so I will be trying the medicine bottle this time. THX :goodvibes

Great tips. We buy glow sticks from the dollar stores lots of them. When we go to firework shows or fantasmic and the kids want all that light stuff they are selling, we break out the sticks and they get busy making bracelts., necklaces. They stick them in their hair, their shoes, they just go crazy. We always have extras so they can share with kids around them.

I absolutely love this tip. My husband is usually my biggest "problem child" when it comes to what he is wearing, and this is a great solution to that! I could even do this for his work clothes! thanks for sharing! :thumbsup2

In the morning my kids like ovaltine, so I pack some in a ziplock and make it up in the morning with milk from the fridge.

Also, we do not like the coffee supplied in the room, so we bring our own peets coffee, pre ground, and either buy mini filters or bring paper towels to use as filters. then bring our own splenda and use the kids milk. Real strong coffee to start the day. I believe the deluxe and moderates supply a coffee maker in the room.

With the Magical express, I plan to pack all my daughers princess gowns in a hanger bag and put all the accessories ( hair pretties in a ziplock, shoes, socksin a ziplock, tiaras) with them. This way when we unpack everything stays together.

Instead of bulky diaper bag, I put 3-4 diapers, wipes put in to a small zip lock, cream into a plastic 1 gallon zip lock. Through it in the storage compartment of the stroller. This way I don't need to get the big bag out to simply change a diaper. I pack another bag that can get buried in the stroller for extra clothes ( just in case the diaper leaks/weather changes) pre-packed gold fish, other snacks, sunscreen, ect.

Thanks for evryones suggestions!

I purchased one of those collapsable pop-up hampers for my laundry. I like keeping it in a corner and having somewhere to toss the dirty clothes. When I take the kids to the pool, I just take it with me and do the laundry. It also has a front pocket for detergent.
