I'm 5'1 and would like to lose 20lbs. There are many websites that list how many calories are needed to maintain but I can't find anything to tell me how many calories I should eat per day to lose weight?

 not sure either. Don't fret, I'm 5' 0" on a good day! ;)

Would the answer help you? To loose 1 lb. of fat you need to burn 3500 calories. Sorry, I was never good at math.

I don't know how scientific this is, but I use my weight x 10 (or 12) [totals the number of calories each day] to lose weight and my weight x 13 to 15 to maintain. That way, as you lose weight, you automatically adjust your calorie intake to maintain the new you. It worked for me for years. I'm using it again for the 5 for January challenge and it's working well.

Ideal Body Weight:

Calculator to determine what you need to take. You set the fields and it will tell you.
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

And go to this calculator to take those calories and figure out how to apportion them:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/nutrient_calculator.htm

You can also click on a 7-day calorie cycle (zig zag) after calculating--this will fluctuate your calories during the week so that your body doesn't get used to the same exact # everyday.

Runners world says to eat 10-11 calories per pound of body weight you wish to weigh. Progress will be slow but likely to stay permanent. So if you want to weigh 120--you'd consume 1200 calories per day.

Just wanted to update--self Magazine suggested 13-16 calories per pound you wish to weigh. I wonder if I misread the Runners World article. I will recheck it when I return home.

Just wanted to offer that up.
